• What set of tools make up "the rails way" of testing javascript in the browser?

  What's the concensus for doing in-browser (either headless or remote-controlled) testing of javascript? Unit testing my JS is nice, but can't protect against irresponsible changes to the DOM. Unit testing of the JS and functional testing of the views to make sure they both provide and utilize the same, correct DOM, might work, but then the link between JS and DOM is being covered in two places which seems brittle or cumbersome. Is there an acknowledged "Rails Way" to implement full-stack tests, where I can run my javascript against the DOM rendered by the rest of the app, and check the results? (Something like what PHPUnit and Selenium give us, but inside the rails framework?)

• Radeon HD4850 card, ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS Installed FGLRX drivers, but still running vesa, how to solve it?

To begin with, after fresh instll, i installed fglrx drvers from system -- additional drivers, according to fglrxifo everything was alright, but the system was running on vesa:sem. After that, i have reinstalled and installed drivers according to many tutorials, but stille got that problem. one of the tutorial was here: What is the correct way to install ATI Catalyst Video Drivers (fglrx)? of course, i attempted to install 12.6 driver Now i have a fresh install of ubuntu and don't want to touch anything without anyone's support, because my 3 days nightmare didn't give results. what must i do to have an adequate performance of video card? • When profiling a function for time use, what information is desirable?

  I'm writing a program similar to Python's timeit module. The idea is to time a function by executing it anywhere from 10 to 100,000 times depending on how long it takes and then report results. I've read that the most important number is the minimum execution time because this is the number that best reflects how fast the machine can run the code in question in the absence of other programs competing for processor time and memory. This argument makes sense to me. Would you be happy with this? Would you want to know the average time or the standard deviation? Is there some other measure that you consider more important?

• Performance impact of the new mtmalloc memory allocator

  I wrote at a number of occasions (here or here), that it could be really beneficial to use a different memory allocator for highly-threaded workloads, as the standard allocator is well ... the standard, however not very effective as soon as many threads comes into play. I didn't wrote about this as it was in my phase of silence but there was some change in the allocator area, Solaris 10 got a revamped mtmalloc allocator in version Solaris 10 08/11 (as described in "libmtmalloc Improvements"). The new memory allocator was introduced to Solaris development by the PSARC case 2010/212. But what's the effect of this new allocator and how does it works? Rickey C. Weisner wrote a nice article with "How Memory Allocation Affects Performance in Multithreaded Programs" explaining the inner mechanism of various allocators but he also publishes test results comparing Hoard, mtmalloc, umem, new mtmalloc and the libc malloc. Really interesting read and a must for people running applications on servers with a high number of threads.

  I have a client who has their e-mail hosted with Network Solutions and some of the e-mails they are sending are going to spam. I've searched Google for information on network solutions and SPF records but all the results have to do with "how to set up an SPF record" - which I understand how to do. The problem is that I can't find any information about what SPF records to use for network solutions hosted e-mail. I even tried lookup up spf records on networksolutions.com but it appears there are none. Where can I find SPF record information for Network Solution hosted email?

• Recomendation for Webshop with API

  I'm searching for a webshop. The problem with my search is, that the webshop-software of my choice needs to have a useabel API or some interface for external applications. E.g. i need to place orders by an external application or need to get product descriptions or warehouse stock from the external application. I somehow would like to have a webshop wehere the webinterface is just one way to interact with the whole system. There are some other requirments, which have to be fullfilled, but i guess they are kind of common: running on linux MySQL (we already have MySQL-replication and backup in place) i like open source but i'm willing to pay for it, if it's worth it I found some webshops on the net - but perhaps you can tell me, if theres any hope for a webshop with a good API before i go and test all of them, on the first look i didn't find any docs about any interface to external applications for any of my search results. • Setting Up and Running Summary Advisor on an Exalytics Machine (Oracle-by-Example)

  If you are running Oracle BI on an Exalytics machine, you can use Summary Advisor to identify the aggregates that will increase query performance. Summary Advisor intelligently recommends an optimal list of aggregate tables based on query patterns that will achieve maximum query performance gain while meeting specific resource constraints. Summary Advisor then generates an aggregate creation script that can be run to create the recommended aggregate tables. Aggregate tables reduce query times by storing precomputed results for queries that include rolled-up data. This tutorial covers steps to set up, configure, and run Summary Advisor on an Exalytics machine using TimesTen database as a target for storing aggregates. You can find the Oracle By Example (OBE) in the Oracle Learning Library (OLL). The content in OLL is available to all customers, partners, and employees.

Find out version information about Silverlight and which WebKit it is using by going to http://issilverlightinstalled.com/scriptverify/. Why do I care? I’ve had those users that its just easier to give them a site and say copy/paste the line that says User Agent in order to troubleshoot a Silverlight problem. I’ve also been debugging my own Silverlight applications and needed an easy way to determine if the plugin is disabled or not. How do I do it: Simply navigate to http://issilverlightinstalled.com/scriptverify/ and hit the Verify button. Why do I care?  It is my personal opinion that code is easier to read using Lambdas after you get past the syntax. Prevent development Web Service references from breaking when Visual Studio auto generates a new port number. Why do I care?  We have all been there, we are developing a Silverlight Application and all of a sudden our development web services break. We check and find out that the local port number that Visual Studio assigned has changed and now we need up to update all of our service references. We need a way to stop this. How do I do it: This can actually be prevented with just a few mouse click. Right click on your web solution and goto properties. Click the tab that says, Web. You just need to click the radio button and specify a port number. Now you won’t be bothered with that anymore. Tip/Trick #19) What is it? You can disable the Close Button a ChildWindow. Why do I care?  I wouldn’t blog about it if I hadn’t seen it. Devs trying to override keystrokes to prevent users from closing a Child Window. How do I do it: A property exist on the ChildWindow called “HasCloseButton”, you simply change that to false and your close button is gone. You can delete the “Cancel” button and add some logic to the OK button if you want the user to respond before proceeding. Tip/Trick #20) What is it? Cleanup your XAML. Why do I care?  By removing unneeded namespaces, not naming all of your controls and getting rid of designer markup you can improve code quality and readability. How do I do it: (This is a 3 in one tip) Remove unused Designer markup: 1) Have you ever wondered what the following code snippet does? xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignWidth="640" d:DesignHeight="480" This code is telling the designer to do something special with this page in “Design mode” Specifically the width and the height of the page. When its running in the browser it will not use this information and it is actually ignored by the XAML parser. In other words, if you don’t need it then delete it. 2) If you are not using a namespace then remove it. In the code sample below, I am using Resharper which will tell me the ones that I’m not using by the grayed out line below. If you don’t have resharper you can look in your XAML and manually remove the unneeded namespaces. 3) Don’t name an control unless you actually need to refer to it in procedural code. If you name a control you will take a slight performance hit that is totally unnecessary if its not being called. <TextBlock Height="23" Text="TextBlock" />   That is the end of the series. • How does having the Debugger change the game execution on an XBOX 360?

  So I thought my issue was relating to the difference between a Debug and a Release build as per this question: What's the difference between a "Release" Xbox 360 build and a "Debug" one? but I've since found that if I go ahead and build a Creators Club version of the game using a Debug build and deploy to the XBOX, I get the same experience I had with the Release version of my game. However if I run the game from Visual Studio using F5 and having set the XBOX as the default platform, then the game runs as expected. If I change from Debug to Release and run with CTRL+F5 then the game also works as expected. How would running the game with the debugger attached change the results I am getting in game? Is there any way that I can use the same approach or change the default compilation of the game so that I can use this approach to release my game?

• Products missing from backend after import

  My client imported about 70 products into magneto and the all imported properly it seemed, but now only about half of them appear in the catalog ( backend ) searching for the SKU returns no results. I have searched the net for an hour looking for some information on this but I cant find any, furthermore I cant seem to find out how to verify whether the products are in the database or not, I thought I could just look for the products table in phpmyadmin, but Magento's EAV database structure looks more complicated than I'm used to. Does anyone know how to fix this, or even to locate products in the database. Edit : From talking to the client she thinks that this might have happened after she did a reindex.

• Quadrant for SQL Server 2008, not earlier versions

  I had forgotten that you can use SQL Server Modeling’s awesome Quadrant tool only with SQL Server 2008, not earlier versions of SQL Server. I tried to connect to a remotely hosted database today and kept getting this error message when trying to open tables: I searched and searched for information on "Quadrant" plus this error and only came up with two results that were from 2008. I looked at the FAQs and saw nothing about version support. I know it’s written down somewhere...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? I just need 2 short lines of code, the rest like detecting if and where to execute I've figured out. I've tried delete map[i][j].item; with no results. Help appreciated.

  How can I get Unity working under an ATI Radeon X1600 PCI-E on Ubuntu 12.04? I'm rather Windows guy, but I can do some things with CLI. ATI seems to have ended support for this card for both Windows and Linux. Theres no proper driver in jockey; binary driver from Software Center doesn't give Unity, just Unity 2D. Yes, I've tried the commands from this post - without any positive results; should I try installing drivers manually?

  I have two light sources on my scene. I created two fbo's which store depth textures for these lights. A render loop looks like this: bind fbo1 save depth values for first light unbind fbo1 bind fbo2 save depth values for second light unbind fbo2 enable additive blending bind first depth texture render scene bind second depth texture render scene disable additive blending For one light source the program works fine. For many light sources I use an additive blending to acumulate lighting results but then some objects become transparent (for example when an object which is further away from the camera is drawn before an object which is closer to the camera). How to resolve that problem ? How should I accumulate lighting effects for many light sources (many shadow maps) ? P.S. I use OpenGL/GLSL 3.3+

• Is there anything software-related I can do, to make ubuntu play high-quality mkv files smoothely?

  I've noticed that beyond let's say..a 20 MB/s bitrate, a movie would lag, played on my laptop.. It results in me missing the highest bitrated scenes of a movie.. And sometimes having to compromise for watching the movie at a lesser quality.. I was wondering if there's anything I can do software-wise to play movies smoothley..? At the moment Ubuntu is installed with all the default settings on an 60GB SSD I use VLC ofcourse.. I also have 2 1TB HDD - maybe I can use them as pagefiles? I don't really know alot about this so maybe this is irrelevant.. I took the laptop battery out since it was dead..but I think this is also irrelevant.. would appriciate a response, even if there's nothing that can be done software-wise :)

• Unit testing a text index

  Consider a text index such as a suffix tree or a suffix array supporting Count queries (number of occurrences of a pattern) and Locate queries (the positions of all the occurrences of a pattern) over a given text. How would you go about unit testing such a class ? What I have in mind is to generate a big random string then extract a random substring from this big string and compare the results of both queries with naive implementations (such as string::find). Another idea I have is to find the most frequent substring of length l appearing in the original string (using perhaps a naive method) and use these substrings for testing the index. This isn't the best way, so what would be a good design of the unit tests for a text index ? In case it matters, this is in C++ using google test.

  Possible Duplicate: Data input validation - Where? How much? I'm a new PHP developer and am into Powershell quite a bit but this question is language agnostic. I've been questioning my code quite a bit lately thinking about how many nets I should setup to catch exceptions, verify results, etc. I realize that I could go crazy trying to verify each and every line of code but at the same time I want the code as resilient as possible. I'm not talking about user input but verifying output from methods. Is there some standard or rule of thumb to go by when deciding when and where to do data validation?

• Efficient Bus Loading

  This is something I did for a bus travel company a long time ago, and I was never happy with the results. I was thinking about that old project recently and thought I'd revisit that problem. Problem: Bus travel company has several buses with different passenger capacities (e.g. 15 50-passenger buses, 25 30-passenger buses ... etc). They specialized in offering transportation to very large groups (300+ passengers per group). Since each group needs to travel together they needed to manage their fleet efficiently to reduce waste. For instance, 88 passengers are better served by three 30-passenger buses (2 empty seats) than by two 50-passenger buses (12 empty seats). Another example, 75 passengers would be better served by one 50-passenger bus and one 30-passenger bus, a mix of types. What's a good algorithm to do this?

• It appears you are running a x server NVIDIA Drivers 304.02 Ubuntu 12.04

  So I went to NVIDIA's site and I saw they had a version with a lot of bug fixes. http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/49073 and I downloaded it, I ran the .run file rooted. It keeps saying "It appears you are running a x server" I don't have any current NVIDIA driver installed, I tried the nvidia x-config thing but that didn't work. It just says it can't be found. Should I wait until that version gets on Ubuntu's software center? I don't feel like installing their old and bad version of the drivers.

• Dash Home pane disappears when clicked

  I am having a problem with Dash Home. When I launch it from my launcher bar, I get the translucent search pane (like I always did, even when it worked). However, if I try to click anywhere in the dash pane, the pane disappears and the action goes to the underlying window, as if the dash pane was not really there. I can type in the search field and Dash responds with matches, but I can't do anything with the results, since when I click it just disappears. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04. Any ideas?

• Address search from large text file

  Basically I want to develop a Address lookup(part of my project) using C# (and I can use SQL if necessary). I have a very large text file which have all the UK address and postcodes. Addresses needs to be looked up from this text file. For example, as soon as a user type in the first letter of the postcode it should list all the postcodes starting with that letter and as they type in further, the list should narrow down. Could you guys please how I can do this search very fast and list the results in a efficient way. If you guys know any methods and technologies pls do advice.

• How to interpret Google's "Avg. Page Load Time"?

  Is there any industry rule of thumb for what's considered an unacceptable load time v. an OK one v. a blistering fast one? We're just reviewing some Google Analytics data and getting 0.74 Avg. Page Load Time reported. I guess that's OK. However it would be good if some meatier comparison data were available, or a blog post, or somewhere where there's some analysis of what speeds are generally being achieved by various kinds of sites. Any useful links to help someone interpret these speeds? If you Google it you just get a lot of results dealing with how to improve your speed. We're not at that stage yet.

• Rythmbox library set to: multiple locations and no way to edit/change

  I previously set Rhythmbox to include a few different locations. Now following changes to my directory structure, I'd like to reflect these changes in Rhythmbox. But when I go to "Library Location", I see "Multiple locations Set" and I can only add to the list; no way to edit/remove. I Googled this problem and the only relevant results I get date back to 2006, probably referring to a previous version of Rhythmbox and specifying components/locations that I can't find on my system. Give a look at the documentation...kind of minimal. Any clues? Ubuntu 12.04 Rhythmbox 2.96
