• Remove objects from different environments

  I have an R script file that executes a second R script via: source("../scripts/second_file.R") That second file has the following lines: myfiles <- list.files(".",pattern = "*.csv") ... rm(myfiles) When I run the master R file I get: > source("../scripts/second_file.R") Error in file.remove(myfiles) : object 'myfiles' not found and the program aborts. I think this has something to do with the environment. I looked at ?rm() pages but less than illuminating. I figure I have to give it a position argument, but not sure which.

• What's the fastest way to compare two objects in PHP?

  Let's say I have an object - a User object in this case - and I'd like to be able to track changes to with a separate class. The User object should not have to change it's behavior in any way for this to happen. Therefore, my separate class creates a "clean" copy of it, stores it somewhere locally, and then later can compare the User object to the original version to see if anything changed during its lifespan. Is there a function, a pattern, or anything that can quickly compare the two versions of the User object? Option 1 Maybe I could serialize each version, and directly compare, or hash them and compare? Option 2 Maybe I should simply create a ReflectionClass, run through each of the properties of the class and see if the two versions have the same property values? Option 3 Maybe there is a simple native function like objects_are_equal($object1,$object2);? What's the fastest way to do this?

  Hello everyone. I would like to create a vertical splitted site structure using two divs: My intention is to have d2 next to d1 in a horizontal align structure (same line). What i get is not this. In fact using that code, d2 does not take the remaining space, but collapses to the min width. if I use WRONG because d2 goes down and takes all the space (but both divs are in different lines). HOW TO REACH MY OBJECTIVE? Is there a design pattern for this problem???? Thanks.

• Google Gears hangs when capturing (unmanaged resource store)

  Our code was written based on the example from Google Gears' own docs. We're using an unmanaged resource store. So we declare the files in an array, create the store, and capture all the files. Trouble is, the capturing process hangs. It always hangs on a random file (no discernible pattern has emerged), and when you reload the page, it always successfully captures. We're capturing 48 files. It seems to have nothing to do with the files themselves, as it hangs on every file type. I've seen it hang on the 6th file or the 47th. Windows and Mac. FF, IE, and Safari. We are not using a WorkerPool, and I'm thinking this may be necessary. Any other ideas why it would hang?

What i'm looking for in C++ is: events ActionScript and java either delegates or notifications in Objective C anything that allows class A, Class B and Class C to know that ClassX didSomething()!!! thanks

• What is the most efficient functional version of the following imperative code?

  I'm learning Scala and I want to know the best way of expressing this imperative pattern using Scala's functional programming capabilities. def f(l: List[Int]): Boolean = { for (e <- l) { if (test(e)) return true } } return false } The best I can come up with is along the lines of: l map { e => test(e) } contains true But this is less efficient since it calls test() on each element, whereas the imperative version stops on the first element that satisfies test(). Is there a more idiomatic functional programming technique I can use to the same effect? The imperative version seems awkward in Scala.

• Using Remote Web Page to Initialize iPhone App

  My iPhone app relies on a vendor's XML feed to provide data. But that feed is not locked down. The vendor could change the format of the XML at any time, although so far they've promised not to. Since I might want to tell my app to use a different URL for its data source, I'd like to set up a single "Command Central" Web page, on my own server, to direct the app to the correct data source. In other words, each time my app starts, in the background and unseen by the user, it would visit "http://www.myserver.com/iphoneapp_data_sources.xml" to retrieve the URL for retrieving data from my vendor. That way, if my vendor suddenly changes the exact URL or the XML feed that the app needs, I can update that Web page and ensure that all installations of the app are using the correct XML feed. Does anyone have any advice or examples showing this kind of approach? It seems as if this must be a common problem, but so far I haven't found a well-established design pattern that fits it.

I have this pattern coming up all trough my testcode, and would love to be be able to simplify this using [TestCase], or any other way that reduces boilerplate code. To the best of my knowledge I'm not allowed to use a delegate as a [TestCase] argument, and I'm hoping people here have creative ideas on how to make the code below more terse. • How to grab the lines AFTER a matched line in python

  Hi All, I am an amateur using Python on and off for some time now. Sorry if this is a silly question, but I was wondering if anyone knew an easy way to grab a bunch of lines if the format in the input file is like this: " Heading 1 Line 1 Line 2 Line 3 Heading 2 Line 1 Line 2 Line 3 " I won't know how many lines are after each heading, but I want to grab them all. All I know is the name, or a regular expression pattern for the heading. The only way I know to read a file is the "for line in file:" way, but I don't know how to grab the lines AFTER the line I'm currently on. Hope this makes sense, and thanks for the help!

• PHP: Loop through text file and isolate lines which a specific "starting point"

  Hi everyone, I’m trying to reduce some editing time within some textfiles where there approximately are 10.000 lines of text, but I only need around 200 or some. The text file relies on a almost specific pattern but it deviates from time to time but my “focus” in order to select the right line to keep is, that the line always starts with: z3455 and then have a variable afterwards, e.g.: z3455 http://url.com/data1/data1.1/data1.3/ (342kb) I have an algorithm to capture the URL and its content but now I need some way to loop through the text file, deleting all lines except does that starts with z3455 and then “push” them together so they are listed underneath each other. I’ve tried different approaches for this in PHP but can’t seem to find a correct function. I can “isolate” a specific line number but when it deviates I can’t use this approach fully. I hope that someone can help me, either by providing the code or knocking me in the right direction to how I’ll solve this problem. Thanks in advance Sincerely - Mestika

• Is there a definitive list of uri patterns for use in android apps made by google?

  Apart from http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/g-app-intents.html (which is quite good but fairly limited in the number of apps/uri's it covers) I've been unable to find a decent reference source for looking up URI's to use when integrating with google apps. I'm currently working on triggering the "add new contact" UI, and have found that the tel: uri pattern seems to work, but what if I only have a name and an email? I wouldn't have expected I'd need to rely on sample code / trial and error, but I really can't see anywhere where the intent/URI interface is supposed to be documented in android apps. Does such a standard exist? Is there some quasi standard / user database that I can consult? On a platform with such a good inter-interoperability architecture it just seems like something so useful I can't believe it's not there

• Should I dive into ASP.NET MVC or start with ASP.NET Webforms?

  I plan to pick up Silverlight in the future. Possibility of going into Microsoft WPF. Currently learning Objective-C 2.0 w/ Cocoa. I already know Pros and Cons of ASP.NET MVC vs ASP.NET Webforms. What I want to know is what would be more "efficient" for me to learn given the circumstances above? By efficient I mean learning one design pattern once and then re-using it. Objective-C I believe uses MVC approach? What about Silverlight? WPF? So what do you think? Also as a side question is it true that ASP.NET Webforms is often used by freelancers/small companies and ASP.NET MVC in large enterprises?

  I have a situation where I need to extract dates from the file names whose general pattern is [filename_]YYYYMMDD[.fileExtension] e.g. "xxx_20100326.xls" or x2v_20100326.csv The below program does the work //Number of charecter in the substring is set to 8 //since the length of YYYYMMDD is 8 public static string ExtractDatesFromFileNames(string fileName) { return fileName.Substring(fileName.IndexOf("_") + 1, 8); } Is there any better option of achieving the same?   I am having trouble getting the right hibernate annotations to use on a Map with an enumerated class as a key. Here is a simplified (and extremely contrived) example. public class Thing { public String id; public Letter startLetter; public Map<Letter,Double> letterCounts = new HashMap<Letter, Double>(); } public enum Letter { A, B, C, D } Here are my current annotations on Thing @Entity public class Thing { @Id public String id; @Enumerated(EnumType.STRING) public Letter startLetter; @CollectionOfElements @JoinTable(name = "Thing_letterFrequencies", joinColumns = @JoinColumn(name = "thingId")) @MapKey(columns = @Column(name = "letter", nullable = false)) @Column(name = "count") public Map<Letter,Double> letterCounts = new HashMap<Letter, Double>(); } Hibernate generates the following DDL to create the tables for my MySql database create table Thing (id varchar(255) not null, startLetter varchar(255), primary key (id)) type=InnoDB; create table Thing_letterFrequencies (thingId varchar(255) not null, count double precision, letter tinyblob not null, primary key (thingId, letter)) type=InnoDB; Notice that hibernate tries to define letter (my map key) as a tinyblob, however it defines startLetter as a varchar(255) even though both are of the enumerated type Letter. When I try to create the tables I see the following error BLOB/TEXT column 'letter' used in key specification without a key length I googled this error and it appears that MySql has issues when you try to make a tinyblob column part of a primary key, which is what hibernate needs to do with the Thing_letterFrequencies table. So I would rather have letter mapped to a varchar(255) the way startLetter is. Unfortunately, I've been fussing with the MapKey annotation for a while now and haven't been able to make this work. I've also tried @MapKeyManyToMany(targetEntity=Product.class) without success. Can anyone tell me what are the correct annotations for my letterCounts map so that hibernate will treat the letterCounts map key the same way it does startLetter?

  Hi, I'm surprised this question wasn't asked before on SO (well, at least I couldn't find it). Have you ever designed a method-callback pattern (something like a "pointer" to a class method) in C++ and, if so, how did you do it ? I know a method is just a regular function with some hidden this parameter to serve as a context and I have a pretty simple design in mind. However, since things are often more complex than they seem to, I wonder how our C++ gurus would implement this, preferably in an elegant and standard way. All suggestions are welcome !

• Is it considered bad practice to have ViewModel objects hold the Dispatcher?

  My WPF application is structured using the MVVM pattern. The ViewModels will communicate asynchronously with a server, and when the requested data is returned a callback in the ViewModel is triggered, and it will do something with this data. This will run on a thread which is not the UI Thread. Sometimes these callbacks involve work that needs to be done on the UI thread, so I need the Dispatcher. This might be things such as: Adding data to an ObservableCollection Trigger Prism commands that will set something to be displayed in the GUI Creating WPF objects of some kind. I try to avoid the latter, but the two first points here I find to be reasonable things for ViewModels to do. So; is it okay to have ViewModels hold the Dispatcher to be able to Invoke commands for the UI thread? Or is this considered bad practice? And why?

• How can an Android Service know that its not bound to any Activities

  I have an Android Service that I would like to keep running even after the last Activity has been popped off the stack, or the User has chosen to do something else. Essentially the Service is listening for changes on a remote server, and I would like to generate a Notification if and only if an Activity from the app isn't running(or visible). In other words, I don't want the Notifications to occur while the User is directly interacting with the app. In the case where the User is directly interacting with the app, the Service will notify the Activity and update appropriate UI elements based on the changes. I plan to implement this through the Observer pattern. How can the Service know if none of apps Activities are bound to it? Thanks, J

  Hi, If I have a regex with a capturing group, e.g. foo(_+f). If I match this against a string and want to replace the first capturing group in all matches with baz so that foo___f blah foo________f is converted to: foobaz blah foobaz There doesn't appear to be any easy way to do this using the standard libraries. If I use Matcher.replaceAll() this will replace all matches of the entire pattern and convert the string to baz blah baz Obviously I can just iterate through the matches, store the start and end index of each capturing group, then go back and replace them, but is there an easier way?   Hi, Im a j2ee developper & we are using hibernatne mapping with a postgres databasae. We have to keep track of any changes occurs in the databse , in others words alls previous & current value of any field should be saved & field can be various types (bytea, int, char...) With a simple table it is easy but we a graph of objets things are more difficult So we have , speaking in a UML point of view, a graph of objects to store in the database with every changes & the user.
