  • Silverstripe: How can I disable comments?

    My client site is built in Silverstripe, there is a news page, and it allows people to leave comments. Unfortunately we've got loads of spam emails. I'm new to this, is there any way we can disable the comment field by default? How do I do it? Alternatively is there easy way for me to install a spam protection? Update - Because this is someone else's code, I just realised that they have some sort of spam protection already, so we are trying to disable comments now. This is a basic example, but I am developing best practices now, so when things become more complicated later, I am better equipped to manage them.   • Can't Start ISC DHCP IPv6 Server

    Trying to enable the ISC DHCP server for just IPv6 on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I have downloaded and installed the DHCP server via the following command: $ sudo apt-get install isc-dhcp-server Then I have followed the instructions in the following resources, Ubuntu Wiki DHCPv6, SixXS - Configuring ISC DHCPv6 Server and Linux IPv6 HOWTO - Configuration of the ISC DHCP server for IPv6 . So from review all those resources it seems like I need to: set a static IPv6 address for the Interface I want to run the DHCPv6 server from that is part of the IPv6 network subnet outside the DHCP range. Edit the /etc/dhcp/dhcpd6.conf file to configure the DHCPv6 range etc. Create the /var/lib/dhcp/dhcpd6.leases Manually start the DHCPv6 server. Setting the Static IP for eth0 $ sudo ifconfig eth0 inet6 add 2001:db8:0:1::128/64 My dhcpd6.conf default-lease-time 600; max-lease-time 7200; log-facility local7; subnet6 2001:db8:0:1::/64 { #Range for clients range6 2001:db8:0:1::129 2001:db8:0:1::254; } Created the dhcpd6.leases file As indicated in the dhcpd.leases man page. $ touch /var/lib/dhcp/dhcpd6.leases #Tried with sudo as well Manually starting the DHCPv6 server. Attempted to start the server using the following command: $ sudo dhcp -6 -f -cf /etc/dhcp/dhcpd6.conf eth0 The problem, the DHCP will not start, with an append error for the dhcpd6.leases file as indicated below when running the manual start command noted above. Can't open /var/lib/dhcp/dhcpd6.leases for append. Any ideas what I might be missing?

  • Alias multiple DNS entries to one Amazon S3 Bucket

    I have a bucket on Amazon S3. Lets call it "webstatic.mydomain.com". I have a DNS alias setup for that bucket webstatic.mydomain.com CNAME - web-static.mydomain.com.s3.amazonaws.com. This all works great, however for some rather complicated reasons I now need: webstatic.myOtherDomain.com to point to that same amazon bucket so: webstatic.myOtherDomain.com CNAME - web-static.mydomain.com.s3.amazonaws.com. Fails, as the bucket is not called the same as the referring DNS. Can anyone tell me how to have two different DNS entries pointing to the same amazon bucket?

  • How come verification does not include actual testing?

    Having read a lot about this topic, I still did not get it. Verification should prove that you are building the product right, while validation you build the right product. But only static techniques are mentioned as being verification methods (code reviews, requirements checks...). But how can you say if its implemented correctly if you do not test it? It is said that verification checks e.g. code for its correctnes. Verification - ensure that the product meet specified requirements. Again, if the function is specified to work somehow, only by testing I can say that it does. Could anyone explain this to me please?   • Animation API vs frame animation

    I'm pretty far down the road in my game right now, closing in on the end. And I'm adding little tweaks here and there. I used custom frame animation of a single image with many versions of my sprite on it, and controlled which part of the image to show using rectangles. But I'm starting to think that maybe I should've used the Animation API that comes with android instead. Will this effect my performance in a negative way? Can I still use rectangles to draw my bitmap? Could I add effects from the Animation API to my current frame-controlled animation? like the fadeout-effect etc? this would mean I wont have to change my current code. I want some of my animations to fade out, and just noticed that using the Animation API makes things alot easier. But needless to say, I would prefer not having to change all my animation-code.   • Issues with the intended behavior of a Service layer?

    This analysis makes sense, and states anything that avoids code duplication and simplifies maintenance speaks for a service layer. What is the technical behavior? When a service client references a service, does it do so at runtime, or does it happen at compile time? When I change something in the service layer code, will this change be automatically taken into account in all it's clients, or do they need to be individually recompiled? How does this make sense from a testing point of view - I have working code, based on some code from a service, but if that service changes, my code might break?!

By investigating it thru http://www.just-ping.com/ it seems, that from many places the ping is very high, and during quick investigation I found that they use GeoIP to resolve addresses based on WHOIS, which is not accurate and because of that from many places the ping is above 300ms (for example, if ISP is in balgladore and request is routed to bangladore even if it's 300ms, for period of 1 month), while by just using Amazon Web Services and Route 53 Anycast DNS servers and only 4 EC2 instances it seems that for example India is always below 100ms, while using Akamai it goes above 300ms in some cases, and this is because Route 53 is using BGP. By quickly checking the Akamai, it seems that they are not getting feedback from the traffic - the high ping stays constant even if I keep downloading large files and videos, which is opposite to what they say on their website. They state, that they optimize the performance by taking feedback from the requests, while it seems they just use GeoIP with per City resolution (which are mostly big cities). Because of this, AWS with Route 53 / Anycast DNS seems to be much more reliable, as well EdgeCast which is using BGP, but I dont know how much does it cost to deploy static website. Actually, I dont know if EdgeCast is not a lie, because from isolated places there are many errors - so their performance is at the cost of quality of delivery, because of BGP switching the routes during transfer of large files. So I was wondering, what is really Akamai good for, because they dont seem to pose any strength in any field in what I do understand now, except they offer some software based WAF on their website, but what I really care about is the core distribiution, so the question is? Is really Akamai good for Videos? For static websites? ??? I found so far AWS most usable with most consistent ping and stable transfers.

  • Good design for a simple site that contains a blog

    What is a good design for a simple web site with mostly static pages and a blog? I am helping a friend build this for their small business. We are looking for a simple approach that can be implemented fairly quickly. (I am a programmer and can help with coding, hosting, etc.) One option is to use a site like virb, which lets you choose from one of their themes and build a site pretty easily. You can also include a blog. They host the site for a pretty low monthly rate. I recommended this option, but my friend wants a design that is unique and custom. So, I took one of the themes and started modifying the HTML and CSS. This might still be a good option, but... ...If we are going to greatly modify it, why not just create the static pages from scratch and use something like Wordpress for the blog. Is this a good option? It looks fairly easy to integrate Wordpress with a site so that the design and behavior are really cohesive. Is this a good idea? Do you recommend any other approaches?

  • Effortlessly resize images in Orchard 1.7

    I’ve written several times about image resizing in .NET, but never in the context of Orchard. With the imminent release of Orchard 1.7, it’s time to correct this. The new version comes with an extensible media pipeline that enables you to define complex image processing workflows that can automatically resize, change formats or apply watermarks. This is not the subject of this post however. What I want to show here is one of the underlying APIs that enable that feature, and that comes in the form of a new shape. Once you have enabled the media processing feature, a new ResizeMediaUrl shape becomes available from your views. All you have to do is feed it a virtual path and size (and, if you need to override defaults, a few other optional parameters), and it will do all the work for you of creating a unique URL for the resized image, and write that image to disk the first time the shape is rendered: <img src="@Display.ResizeMediaUrl(Path: img, Width: 59)"/> Notice how I only specified a maximum width. The height could of course be specified, but in this case will be automatically determined so that the aspect ratio is preserved. The second time the shape is rendered, the shape will notice that the resized file already exists on disk, and it will serve that directly, so caching is handled automatically and the image can be served almost as fast as the original static one, because it is also a static image. Only the URL generation and checking for the file existence takes time. Here is what the generated thumbnails look like on disk: In the case of those product images, the product page will download 12kB worth of images instead of 1.87MB. The full size images will only be downloaded as needed, if the user clicks on one of the thumbnails to get the full-scale. This is an extremely useful tool to use in your themes to easily render images of the exact right size and thus limit your bandwidth consumption. Mobile users will thank you for that.

  • Cannot connect to network

    I have a problem: I am on Debian. I configured my nic with a static ip (192.168.1.56). When I try to connect to a network, initially with ifconfig eth2 I get (correctly): eth2 inet addr:192.168.1.56 .... inet6 addr: fe80:221:ff:fe96:4598/64 but after a few seconds the 192.168.1.56 disappears and after some other seconds disappears the inet6 address too. When I press in the nm-applet it requires me the password but in the meantime it try to connect. At uni, the connection is a DHCP one. It works for the first few seconds but after it doesn't.     I have recently upgraded my cluster from 11.10 to 12.04. After the upgrade, I am having trouble running apt-get on the cluster nodes. I can ssh between the nodes (client-to-client; client-to-head; client-to-external etc.).   • Formalizing programmers errors

    Every one of us make errors leading to bugs. Once I wanted to start logging my errors for future analysis, probably mentioning project title, approximate time spent and the most important, the type of error. For example when I copy-pasted a fragment about 'x' and replaced every occurrence of 'x' with 'y' and forgot to replace a tiny piece, this goes to 'copy-paste error'. The usefulness of this approach depends on whether I can formalize my errors at all and probably minimizing the number of types to choose from. Otherwise I would start postponing, ignoring and so on so make this system useless. Are there existing research in this area, probably a known minimum set of errors? Maybe some of you already tried to implement something like this and succeeded/failed?

  • Configuring Linux Network

    Hi I'm working on some software, that runs on a Centos 5.xx installation. I'ts not allowed for our customers to log in to Linux, everything is done from Windows applications, developed by us. So we have build a frontend for the user to configure network setup: Static/DHCP, ip-address, gateway, DNS, Hostname. Right now I let the user enter the information in the Windows app, and then write it on the Linux server like this: Write to /etc/resolv.conf: Nameserver Write to /etc/sysconfig/network: Gateway and Hostname Write to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0: Ipaddress, Netmask, Bootproto(DHCP or Static) I also (after some time) found out that I was unable to send mail, unless I wrote in /etc/hosts: 127.0.0.1 Hostname All this seems to work, but is there a better/easier way to do this? Also, I read the network configuration nearly the same way, but if I use DHCP, I miss som information, for instance the Ip-address. I know that I can get some information from the commandline (ifconfig), but I dont get for instance Hostname, Gateway and DNS. Is there a commandline tool that will display this?

  • Take care to unhook Anonymous Delegates

    Anonymous delegates are great, they elimiante the need for lots of small classes that just pass values around, however care needs to be taken when using them, as they are not automatically unhooked when the function you created them in returns. In fact after it returns there is no way to unhook them.   • Where can I find accessible bug/issue databases with complete revision history

    I'm performing some research and analysis on bug/issue tracking databases and more specifically on how programmers and teams of programmers actually interact with them. What I'm looking for involves understanding how those databases change over time. So what I don't need for example: is a database of all the bugs of some open source project as the bugs exist today. What I do need is a complete set of revision history for every issue/bug in the database. This would enable me to pick a specific datetime and say here were the list of all the issues/bugs that existed at that moment in time. Anyway know of some publicly accessible issue/bug databases that expose this revision data?     I've recently started experimenting with natural language processing (NLP) using Stanford's CoreNLP, and I'm wondering what are some of the standard ways to store NLP parsed data for something like a text mining application? One way I thought might be interesting is to store the children as an adjacency list and make good use of recursive queries (Postgres supports this and I've found it works really well). But I assume there are probably many standard ways to do this depending on what kind of analysis is being done that have been adopted by people working in the field over the years. So what are the standard persistence strategies for NLP parsed data and how are they used?

  • Slow Starting DHCP Client Service - HP Thin Clients

    We have recently began adding XPe thin clients to our domain in preperation for a new citrix environment. One thing that has been picked up on in testing is that they appear slow to boot. The issue manifest's it's self as the classic "Applying Computer Settings..." screen we are all used to seeing. After digging into the issue it appears the DHCP Client service is taking some time to load on boot, this varies but I would estimate it can take around 1 minute in some cases. I've eliminated the classic issues, DHCP is responding correctly and in quick time. DNS is not the cause and GPO's are applying promptly. A simple workaround is to assign the client a static IP which work's great so the TCP/IP servies are obviously firing up quickly, just not DHCP Client. Does anyone have any idea's on how I may be able to improve the service start time? Keen to find a better solution before I get my arm twisted into setting up 250 thin clients with static addressing!

The group agreed that this was nearly impossible to specify because it would depend on a long list of circumstances. But we could tell that the man would not leave (or be very disappointed in us) if we did not come up with an answer suiting him better. So he left with the many times better answer of "10 SLOC/day" Can this question be answered? (offhand or even with some analysis)
