• What is a good web interface for remote linux load monitoring?

  I'm looking for some type of remote linux monitoring software that you can view using a web interface. And I'm not just looking for the basic load information. I'm also looking for process information, similar to the info that you get from TOP. Like I'd just like to be able to pop open this webpage to view whats going on with the server at a moments notice. For example, perhaps just a basic PHP page that is on the server that uses basic AJAX to display and refresh results from the TOP command in the page. I was thinking about writing something like this, but I don't want to reinvent the wheel.

• NetDiag + TCP Blocking?

  We are facing some issue with the sharepoint 2007 timer jobs everyday at a specific time, so decide to track the tcp blocking informartion during those hours using NetDiag tool. We are not able to find the required information if we uses "netdiag /test:ipsec", what is the command that can be used to pull the TCP blocking information and how to configure it? if i ran the command "netdiag /test:ipsec /debug" it is returning "IP Security test . . . . . . . . . : Skipped", what does it mean?

  Is there any good documentation out there explaining how to setup Corporate Error Reporting (CER) on Windows 7? I found some information in Advanced Windows Debugging but the book targets Windows XP and things have changed quite a bit since then. I could not find any tutorials on the Internet/MSDN either. To give a bit of background information, I work for a company with 25 employees and I would like to send crash reports to a local server so that I can analyze what causes our tools to crash. I think I need to know two things: Setting up a Corporate Error Reporting server. Setting up computer to send error reports to our Corporate Error Reporting server.

• Is Moving Entity Framework objects over a webservice really the best way?

  I've inherited a .NET project that has close to 2 thousand clients out in the field that need to push data periodically up to a central repository. The clients wake up and attempt to push the data up via a series of WCF webservices where they are passing each entity framework entity as parameter. Once the service receives this object, it preforms some business logic on the data, and then turns around and sticks it in it's own database that mirrors the database on the client machines. The trick is, is that this data is being transmitted over a metered connection, which is very expensive. So optimizing the data is a serious priority. Now, we are using a custom encoder that compresses the data (and decompresses it on the other end) while it is being transmitted, and this is reducing the data footprint. However, the amount of data that the clients are using, seem ridiculously large, given the amount of information that is actually being transmitted. It seems me that entity framework itself may be to blame. I'm suspecting that the objects are very large when serialized to be sent over wire, with a lot context information and who knows what else, when what we really need is just the 'new' inserts. Is using the entity framework and WCF services as we have done so far the correct way, architecturally, of approaching this n-tiered, asynchronous, push only problem? Or is there a different approach, that could optimize the data use?

  In Mac OS X, when you doubleclick on a file name, that file will open with the application which created the file. So there must be stored, somewhere in the file description on a Mac OS X file, information on which application created this file. Note that this is not the file extension, the file can have any extension, or no extension at all. Two questions regarding this information: (1) How can I search for all files which will open a specific application? (2) How can I see, and change, the application which a certain file will open?

• How can I restore my "Unknown" partition type, back to NTFS?

  Lately I've been having trouble restoring my PC after uninstalling GRUB, and an Ubuntu install from it. Usually I don't encounter any problems when doing this, but this time is different. My Windows XP (NTFS) partition is listed as "Other" in Partition Magic, and "Unknown" in GParted rather than "NTFS". How can I gain access to Windows partition once again? I am more than willing to provide any information, and run any tests necessary to produce said information in order to find out what's going on here. My apologies if this is the wrong place to ask such a question. I have heard nothing but good about Superuser, and decided to give it a shot. Thanks!

• A Web Service to collect data from local servers every hour

  I'm trying to find a way to collect data from different servers around the world. Here are the details: There is only one single PowerShell script on servers that encrypts data (simple csv file) and sends with preferred method (HTTP/HTTPS Post could be) There is no more control on that servers. Can't install any service, process etc. Just I can configure script to execute every hour. This script also will have encrypted username/password/license key for every server. Script will compress data and send to me with these information. So I need a service (I'm not sure if Web Service is the rigth solution) on the cloud that will help me to: Will get data that is sent from servers using a method. Will authenticate request to recognize sender using license key/username/password and most importantly, Will redirect/send this filecab to my SQL Server on the cloud (Azure). Also it should seperate data according to customer information in license key. So every data for every customer will be stored in dedicated DB/Tables on my SQL All the processes above should be completed automatically. No way for manual steps. Question: A Web Service (SOAP or Restful) is the rigth solution for that?

• Vmware Fusion 5 Port Forwarding

  I have a service (a node.js express app) running on port 3000 in a CentOS 6.3 guest that I would like to access in a web browser on my Mac Mountain Lion host using VMware Fusion 5 Professional. I am having trouble finding any information about how to do this. I believe I would like to forward the port but I cannot find any information about this using either the GUI or by modifying configuration files. In earlier versions it looks like you might have modified a file called nat.conf but that does not seem to apply to Fusion 5. Has anyone successfully done this? Thank you.

• TechEd 2012: Fast SQL Server

  While I spend a certain amount of my time creating databases (coding around SQL Server and setup a server when I have to) it isn’t my bread and butter.  Since I have run into a number of time that SQL Server needed to be tuned I figured I would step out of my comfort zone and see what I can learn. Brent Ozar packed a mountain of information into his session on making SQL Server faster.  I’m not sure how he found time to hit all of his points since he was allowing the audience abuse him on Twitter instead of asking questions, but he managed it.  I also questioned his sanity since he appeared to be using a fruit laptop. He had my attention though when he stated that he had given up on telling people to not use “select *”. He posited that it could be fixed with hardware by caching the data in memory.  He continued by cautioning that having too many indexes could defeat this approach.  His logic was sound if not always practical, but it was a good place to start when determining the trade-offs you need to balance.  He was moving pretty fast, but I believe he was prescribing this solution predominately for OLTP database prior to moving on to data warehouse solutions. Much of the advice he gave for data warehouses is contained in the Microsoft Fast Track guidance so I won’t rehash it here.  To summarize the solution seems to be the proper balance memory, disk access speed and the speed of the pipes that get the data from storage to the CPU.  It appears to be sound guidance and the session gave enough information that going forward we should be able to find the details needed easily.  Just what the doctor ordered. del.icio.us Tags: SQL Server,TechEd,TechEd 2012,Database,Performance Tuning

  Hi, I have been looking for information about using a second monitor but thought of using a touchscreen will a touchscreen monitor work in dual set up, but not set up as main monitor which is the question. Can't find any information on this only when others set it has main. only this piece If you mean do the touch screen features still work on the other machine, the answer is yes. Past that, you can even see some of the touch screen features on a non touch screen monitor (just not the multi touch features!) • Auto backup a user folder to a usb when usb is plugged in

  I'm a computer technician and help customers everyday with their computers and smartphones and have a really basic (i think) request but dont know how to go about it. Customer always come in with broken phones, water damage, needing updates, or just want me to backup their information. I currently have a program that i use when i backup their computers it backups their iOS folder C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup but what i want is a quick easy way to do this in customers houses. What i require is a way when i plug in a USB drive it AUTOMATICALLY searches for the folder and starts transferring the folder to a predefined folder on the USB drive. This was I can just plug it in and begin work on their computer or phone without the risk of losing their information. I'm sure there is a .bat/.ini file i could use but wondering if someone has already done this or something similar as I would need it to search all the USER folders not just the one I'm logged into. • Automate Windows 8.1 Enterprise upgrade [migrated]

  I have been trying to find the necessary command line switches for automating the upgrade for my Windows 8 clients to Windows 8.1. I have the ISO extracted and I've run setup.exe /? but that doesn't tell me enough. I can't find any relevant information from search engines. Can anyone point me to some documentation or information on how to automate the upgrade so that it keeps user data, programs, etc? I know how to do it when running the installer manually, but I obviously do not wish to do that with 100+ machines.

• Alternatives to sql like databases

  Well i was wondering these days computers usually have 2GB or 4GB memory I like to use some secure client server model, and well an sql database is likely candidate. On the other hand i only have about 8000 records, who will not frequently be read or written in total they would consume less then 16 Megabyte. And it made me wonder what would be good secure options in a windows environment to store the data work with it multi-client single server model, without using SQL or mysql Would for well such a small amount of data maybe other ideas better ? Because i like to keep maintenance as simple as possible (no administrators would need to know sql maintenance, as they dont know databases in my target environment) Maybe storing in xml files or.. something else. Just wonder how others would go if ease of administration is the main goal. Oh and it should be secure to, the client server data must be a bit secure (maybe NTLM files shares https or...etc)

• ClearTrace Supports SQL Server 2008 R2

  It was a long time coming and I hope worth the wait.  If you have SQL Server 2008 R2 installed on the same box as ClearTrace and you download the latest ClearTrace build (36) you’ll be able to read SQL Server 2008 R2 traces.  I also fixed a bug handling very, very large SQL statements.  I encountered an INSERT statement that was 12MB in size.  It was storing XML in a database.  ClearTrace uses regular expressions to clean up the SQL it finds.  Running two dozen regular expressions over this 12MB string caused the application to crash.  In this build I’m just skipping any statement over 1MB.  I’ll do something a little nicer in the next build. • loss of sound in ubuntu 12.04

  I'm running Linux E6520 3.2.0-56-generic #86-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 23 09:20:45 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux on a Dell Latitude E6530. (This is a new machine; have run the same version of linux on an older machine for a year, without this happening.) I've been losing sound regularly, though have not been able to isolate the trigger for this. I've scoured the web on this subject, in particular https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure and Audio stopped working suddenly in 12.04 Nothing from the first site seemed to work for me. From the second site, I learned enough to be able to fix the problem when it happens, but nothing on the web has helped me figure out why the problem is happening in the first place. Patching together stuff from the web, and with some blind luck, I've found that the following steps seem to restore sound pulseaudio --kill pulseaudio --start pavucontrol -> output devices Click on the "Mute audio" icon, which mutes audio Click on the "Mute audio" icon, which unmutes audio. This obviously doesn't make sense: audio wasn't muted in the first place, but somehow, magically, toggling mute audio off and on seems to reset something. Can anybody suggest from this information why sound would be disappearing in the first place (it seems as though something is getting muted at the system level, but I don't know what)? a simpler (command-line/script) way of restoring sound, in particular, is it possible to reset pavucontrol from the commandline? Some other pieces of information that may be of use: The problem is clearly happening at the system level, since I've set up a clean new user, and this user has the same problems that I do. So user fixes like deleting the .pulse directory aren't (and don't) help. Sound works fine in Windows (dual-boot) so it's not a hardware problem Any help/suggestions on this would be most appreciated.

  Once you start reading about Daylight Saving Time changes in MyOracleSupport you'll find still a lot of notes explaining this and that and back and forth. But sometimes there seems to be a bit too much information - and lacking clear instructions. Once a customer called that the "Time Zone Spaghetti" after reading MOS notes about DST for several hours ending up with the note where he has begun to read before still not clear what to do now I'm using usually the scripts from MOS Note:977512.1 as you'll just have to exchange the DST version you are upgrading to and it has everything you need to check and adjust the time zone data in the database - for instance after applying the DST V18 patch to your database's homes. As a reminder to myself when traveling I have stored a copy of the script part of that note here - and please note that this is not an official Oracle version. Always read and check the original MOS Note:977512.1 as it may have gotten changed in between and may contain changes or corrections and as it has a lot of more explainationary information than I could cover here. • "Keep iTune music files organized" no longer works?

  I remember iTunes used to have the option to "keep music files organized" (i know it still does in its advanced Properties). When I used to edit music's artist, genre or album information. The mp3 file is automatically updated as well. But lately I've been updating some mp3s. And if I tried to open the updated mp3's Properties, under Details, the Artist, genre, and album information is not available. How can i fix this? Added: you can try editing this mp3 file with iTunes, it didn't work on my PC Here's a screenshot of what Im seeing after the edit.

  Are there any alternatives to voxel based terrains? Such terrain should be fully destructable, allow for arches, overhangs, preserve sharp features where needed and keep consistent topology. Maybe you can explain the problem that makes you ask this question? Voxel based terrain is basically just using a 3D grid of data to store data. There are lots of ways to render that data, but it doesn't get much simpler for storing it. – Byte56 Current isosurface extraction methods aren't most effective/bug-free. Cubical Marching Squares seem to solve most of the issues, however it is a relatively new method and there aren't too many resources about it. (I've found single university paper) Even if we stick to CMS, when we want to add multi-material support, we can either divide surface into multiple meshes, or pass a texture array or texture atlas to shaders, then we are limited to set amount of textures and additionally increase memory-usage alot.

• How can I run my program on a large number of computers? [closed]

  I'm looking for a (preferably free) service for running an executable I wrote? It's not malicious, it's not a virus, it's not scam, and if this is really important I can upload the python source code instead. I wrote a small crawler to gather information regarding the style of web pages for my MA project, and I need a lot more data. EDIT Here is more information on my problem and how I approach on solving it, and where I'm stuck. As part of my research I'm trying to classify text based on it's style (font-family for now), my data is based web pages, so I wrote a client/server application - the client is a crawler that gathers this data and send it to the server. The problem is that like 99% of the internet is Arial, Verdana and Helvetica - other fonts are far more rare, so I need to spend very long time to gather enough data regarding these fonts.
