• Serious 64-bit laptop

  For the past couple of years, I have been using an IBM Thinkpad T60p for daily work (software development, desktop & embedded). I am extremely satisfied with this machine, due to its robustness. It also has a few features I depend on: a high resolution display: 15.0" TFT FlexView display with 1600x1200 (UXGA); excellent keyboard; decent graphics and CPU performance. Some of the software I develop benefits from larger amounts of RAM, and 3GB (Windows 7 32-bit) or 4GB (Windows 7 64-bit on T60p) are no longer sufficient. My customers run desktop computers with 20GB and more, and I need to have at least 8GB to at least be able to run reasonable test cases. So I'm shopping around for a new laptop, but I'm struggling to find anything that matches my requirements: must run Windows 7 64-bit Pro or higher; must support at least 8GB of RAM (more is better) high screen resolution! While I prefer 4:3 I can live with wide screen. But I really hope to find something with a vertical screen resolution similar to what I have now... portable, so < 16" but = 14" I realize that FlexView isn't available anymore, but I'd like to avoid a glossy screen if possible. decent (not more) graphics performance, ideally hybrid (I'm doing a lot of CAD, never games). good keyboard reasonable CPU -- but I'm still fine with my current Core 2 Duo, so that shouldn't be too complicated. The T60p fits all those requirements, except the 8GB of RAM. Can you help me find a current notebook that would match most of them? I don't mind changing brand. Thanks!

• Can't start Windows 7 after cloning HDD

  Brief description: cloned HDD1 - HDD2 HDD1 partition 1 boots HDD1 partition 2 boots HDD2 partition 1 boots HDD2 partition 2 doesn't boot Windows, but is bootable in general Now verbosely: In all the cases computer is the same. I have two Windows 7 installations on HDD1 - both are booting fine. I choose between them using standard Windows 7 boot loader menu. Technically there are 4 partitions: 100 MB Boot loader partition (active), Windows 7 copy 1 (25 GB), Windows 7 copy 2 (150 GB) and Working partition. All are primary. In past few days I tried to clone the whole HDD1 to HDD2 of the same size (but 2,5 inch form factor) as is using Minitool Partition wizard. Everything has been copied, all files are accessible, no faults in file system structure, even boot loader wasn't damaged and I hadn't to repair it. But I can boot only first installation of Windows 7 (it boots without issues). When I choose the second installation, I get immediately a completely black screen without any texts, cursors and other data. HDD isn't accessed after that. This black screen is sensitive to Ctrl-Alt-Delete which causes computer reboot. I did some experimenting: Installed Windows 7 to that partition - it booted fine. Then I renamed "Windows" to "Windows.old" and copied Windows directory from HDD1 as it was, using Far Manager, and got the same troubles - black screen. (Of course I performed renaming and copying from other copy of Windows). So, it seems that problems are inside this installation of Windows, somewhere in its files.

• Is there an objective way to measure slowness of PC/WINDOWS?

  We've a lot of users that usually complain about that his PC is "slow". (we use win XP). We usually check startup programs, virus, fragmentation, disk health and common problems that causes slowness (Symantec AV drops disk to 1mb/s , or a seagate HD firmware error in certain models), but in those cases the slowness is pretty evident. In other hand, the most common is the user complaining about his pc but for us looks OK, even in 6 years old desktops. People sometimes even complains about his new quad core desktops speed!!! So, we are asking if there's a way to OBJECTIVELY check that a computer didn't dropped its performance, compared with similar ones o previous measures, specially for work use (I don't think that 3dmark benchmark o similar may help). The only thing that I found that was useful is HDTune, but it only check hard disk performance. Basically, what we want is something that enable us to say to our users "see? your PC is as slow as was three years ago! stop complaining! Is all in your head!"

• What diagnostics are safe to run on an SSD drive?

  I have a MacBook Pro (late 2010) with a Crucial RealSSD 256Gb in it; 60Gb is given to the Windows 7 x64 BootCamp partition. I have a USB-attached 500Gb drive for (most) data. In the last day or so, I've had a BSOD and several OS freezes (both Mac OSX 10.6.6 and Win7). The system in both cases will boot fine (at the moment!) and then run things fine, then some time later a program will stop responding, followed shortly thereafter by the system as a whole, forcing a reboot. This smacks to me of a storage problem. Given that I have an SSD and not a regular magnetic HDD, what are my next steps, in both OS'? I haven't seen anything pertinent in Windows' event-log. I'm not sure of the equivalent place to look in OSX; it's never given me issue to find out. What are my options for attempting to save my data from the SSD to another drive, given that after some small amount of time (eg half an hour), the OS stops responding? What are the recommended next steps?

• How to force the start and end date of a task in Microsoft Project to be on the same day?

  I have a task called "Interview person A about topic X". The task's duration is set to 2 hours. The start date of the task should automatically be calculated taking dependencies and resource availabilities into account. My question boils down to: How can I force this task to start and end on the same date? Background: In my case, Microsoft Project sets the start date to a Friday at 5pm. As my working hours are set to 8am to 12am and 1pm to 6pm (Mon-Fri), Microsoft Project "splits up" the task at 6pm on Friday and plans to continue it at 8am on the following Monday. However, it does not make any sense to stop the interview on a Friday and restart it on Monday. Therefore the automatic suggestion is not helpful in this case. That's why I'm looking for a way way to force the task to start and end on the very same day. (In my example, I'd like Microsoft Project to delay the start date of the task until Monday 8am as this is the first time slot in which the task "fits in completely".) By the way: I have lots of such cases... for that reason it would be really great if there was a solution that doesn't just deal with this single special case.

• INSERT DELAYED on locked tables blocks PHP processes to continue

  Our webservers write some tracking information into a MySQL database (using INSERT DELAYED into MyISAM table). When a huge SELECT query is executed on this table or when it is locked for another reason, the webserver processes (with INSERT DELAYED) are waiting for the database and in some cases the MaxServer limit is reached in Apaches, so they will stop serving requests. We use INSERT DELAYED because The DELAYED option for the INSERT statement is a MySQL extension to standard SQL that is very useful if you have clients that cannot or need not wait for the INSERT to complete. This is a common situation when you use MySQL for logging and you also periodically run SELECT and UPDATE statements that take a long time to complete. Quote from MySQL documentation. I am wondering why the Apache processes are waiting for the INSERT DELAYED to finish. And what can I do to just send the data and forget about it. (Since this is logging data, I do not care if we lose some entries.) Even when the table is locked the PHP script should just go on and should not wait for an answer of MySQL. (We do not want to setup Master-slave for this table but we are thinking about move this data to some NoSQL database. But for now I would like to know why INSERT DELAYED is not working as expected.)

• Display errors using VMWare Player and Remote Desktop on Windows XP

  I've come up against a weird display issue that I can't seem to find any "fix" for. When I first boot up my computer, everything behaves normally. If I start to use VMWare Player and/or Remote Desktop, my desktop starts having some odd video issues. The frames for some windows aren't drawn at all, if I move windows around rapidly, the area under where the window used to be isn't cleared (still shows artifacts of the content of the window), etc. In some cases, the minimize / restore / maximize buttons aren't drawn (but are click-able if you can guess where they are). I've tried the usual stuff - current drivers all around, using a single monitor, etc.. none of it seems to have any bearing. If I try to disable hardware acceleration, it tends to crash the computer. As I said earlier, it's running Windows XP, dual monitors, an NVidia en8400GS video card, asus p7p55d motherboard. Not sure what other pertinent details are needed. I would appreciate any help or suggestions!

• What can inexperienced admin expect after server setup completed seemingly fine? [closed]

  Inexperienced person seems to have done everything fine so far. This is his very first time that he is the only one in charge for LAMP server. He has installed OS, network, Apache, PHP, MySQL, Proftpd, MTA & MDA software, configured VirtualHosts properly (facts because he calls himself admin), done user management and various configuration settings with respect to security recommendations and... everything is fine for now... For now. If you were directing horror movie for server admin above mentioned what would you make up for boogieman that showed up and started to pursue him? Omitting hardware disaster cases for which one cannot do anything 'from remote', what is the most common causes of server or part-of-server or server-related significant failure when managed by inexperienced admin? I have in mind something that is newbie admins very often missing which is leading to later intervention of someone with experience? May that be some uncontrolled CPU-eating leftover process, memory-related glitch, widely-used feature that messes up something unexpected on anything like that? Newbie admin for now only monitors disk-space and RAM usage, and number of running processes. He would appreciate any tips regarding what's probably going to happen to his server over time.

• How to set up Windows 7 Professional as a NAS

  I searched and didn't find any answers, so please forgive me if this is a repeat. Anyway, I have an older computer that I'm using as an HTPC, and I was hoping that I could use it as a NAS/multimedia server, as well. My primary uses would include accessing content on my PS3 (same LAN), accessing content from other computers on my home network and (if I can) accessing content from my Android phone over the internet. I have used SubSonic to stream music to my Android phone and other computers before, but I would really like to find a way to do this natively if possible. I know that I can buy external hard disk cases that can plug in the USB port of my router, that I can get a Drobo or other network storage solution, but I would really just rather not spend the money (especially considering that I already have a computer that I should be able to use).   On WebLogic 11G I can use the console to set the FrontendHost and FrondendPort on a server or on a cluster so that re-directs are handled correctly and end up resolving to the front end load balancer instead of the local host. The MBeans associated with this on WebLogic are, for example: MBean Name com.bea:Name=AdminServer,Type=WebServer,Server=AdminServer Attribute Name FrontendHost Description The name of the host to which all redirected URLs will be sent. If specified, WebLogic Server will use this value rather than the one in the HOST header. Sets the HTTP frontendHost Provides a method to ensure that the webapp will always have the correct HOST information, even when the request is coming through a firewall or a proxy. If this parameter is configured, the HOST header will be ignored and the information in this parameter will be used in its place. Type java.lang.String Readable / Writable RW How is the same thing achieved under Websphere 7? Follow up info: So I have 2 use cases actually. One is that I have a web app running under WebSphere on host A on port 9002 and a LB running on host B at port 80, when I visit the home page of the app via the LB on http://hostb/app the app redirects my browser to http://hostb:9002/app and it 404's I think this is WebSphere's fault but I guess it could be the app's fault? The second is that the web app in question needs to send emails containing URls that the customer can click on to get back into the web app - obviously this needs to be via the LB. On WebLogic the app uses MBeans to derive the LB url and I was hoping to use a similar mechanism on WebSphere.

• Remote Desktop leaves host unresponsive

  I have my desktop PC at home set up to accept remote connections, and I often connect to it from work on my laptop via mstsc.exe. However, every time I remote to it, I find when I go home that despite the monitor being on - it's not receiving an image and it looks as though the computer is hibernating/asleep. I basically have to restart it whenever I get home and I know there's an answer for why its doing this. More details: When exiting the remote session, I have tried both logging off the account, and closing the RDP window without logging off; both give the same result. When I get home to the desktop I of course try moving the mouse, ctrl+alt+del to see if its responsive to restart, multiple key-press to see if I can get any audio out of it; It seems pretty obvious its sleeping/hibernating in some way: Nothing happens in any of these cases and a physical restart is necessary. Both desktop and laptop are running Windows 7 Ultimate. I'm thinking it really is sleeping/hibernating it, and I'm not sure why because left alone my desktop's power options are set to never turn off the HDD or change its state - I leave it on 24/7. This could be a stupid error on my part but I just can't see it! Thanks.

• Splitting an HTTP request into multiple byte-range requests

  I have arrived at the unusual situation of having two completely independent Internet connections to my home. This has the advantage of redundancy etc but the drawback that both connections max out at about 6Mb/s. So one individual outbound http request is directed by my "intelligent gateway" (TP-LINK ER6120) out over one or the other connection for its lifetime. This works fine over complex web pages and utilises both external connects fine. However, single-http-request downloads are limited to the maximum rate of one of the two connections. So I'm thinking, surely I can setup some kind of proxy server to direct all my http requests to. For each incoming http request, the proxy server will issue multiple byte-range requests for the desired data and manage the reassembly and delivery of that data to the client's request. I can see this has some overhead, and also some edge cases where there will be blocking problems waiting for data. I also imagine webmasters of single-servers would rather I didn't hit them with 8 byte-range requests instead of one request. How can I achieve this http request deconstruct/reconstruction? Or am I just barking mad?

• Small maximum number of connections on a Linux router

  I have a Linux box acting as a router with no iptables or other firewall and no networking applications running on it, just pure router. I've put it in a test environment that generates many TCP connections, each having unique source and destination IP, and those connections go through this router. I'm observing that number of connections successfully created rise to approximately 500 and then no more connections can be created for several minutes, then another 100 connections can be created and there is another pause, and so on. If 10 connections for each source-destination pair are created, then maximum numbers go about 10 times up, so the problem is probably with many connections from different IPs. As traffic is simply routed, it doesn't have to do with number of file descriptors, iptables connection tracking and other things often proposed to check in similar cases. The box has plenty of free RAM and CPU, both NICs are gigabit. The kernel is 2.6.32. I've already tried increasing net.core.*mem_max, net.core.netdev_max_backlog and txqueuelen on both NICs, with completely no effect. What else should I check ? Is there some rate-limit in the kernel itself ?

• Ways of file copy

  I sometimes found that when using simple right-click and copy-and-paste, some files/directories are not copied completely or not at all, because of various reasons, such as some saved webpage files/directories have some strange characters in their names or their names are too long. For example, in Windows 7, I save this webpage http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/working-around-windows-vistas-shrink-volume-inadequacy-problems/ completely in a very deep directories whose parent directories may have long names, I cannot copy its top ancestry directory, as Windows complains the filename for the saved webpage directory is too long. In Ubuntu, sometimes I can save a file with some special character such as newline under some directory. But when I copy that directory, it will say the file name has some special character and I will have to manually remove the character. Such cases are complained in both Windows and Ubuntu. I was wondering what some better ways to accomplish the copy job in both Windows and Ubuntu. For example, will archiving all to be copied into a single archive help? If yes how to do that? • USB 3.0 ports backwards compatibility problems with 2.0 devices?

  I see some info on the net that suggest that I should be able to get my USB 2.0 devices to work in 3.0 ports. I only have two 2.0 ports on my new computer, and six 3.0 ports. I have installed drives. There's two different drivers, I guess some of the ports are supported by the intel board and some supported by some other chipset on the motherboard. I however have yet to get any of the 3.0 ports to work, and my brother had had the same issue with his devices not working in 3.0 ports on his computer. So I am beginning to wonder if the backwards compatibility isn't reliable for some reason. Maybe manufacturers opting not to implement 2.0 support on the 3.0 ports. I understand that physically the wiring is there, but that is only half the story. Beyond my brother's and my own computers (different motherboards/everything), I have yet to see a 2.0 device work in a 3.0 port. Is there any reason for this apparent device incompatibility? I.e. looking for responses that would indicate what areas to explore for issues or if there is any known cases of manufacturers deviating from spec in hardware or drivers. I am aware it's "supposed" to work :) Update: Does this have any relation to "USB Legacy Support" options in the BIOS? There several options combinations of options with "USB Legacy Support" and "USB 3.0 Legacy Support" and the description for these is a bit confusing, sounds like a bad translation.

• Does Xenapp require Windows Terminal Services (Remote Desktop) licenses?

  We have a Xenapp 5.x server running for over a year now. It does not have any purchased Terminal Services (Remote Desktop) licenses installed. It is running on a Windows 2008 Server box. I am aware that Terminal Services runs fine for about 3 months and then supposedly stops issuing licenses. On occasion, Xenapp stops working and we see lots of License errors in the event log, although not necessarily every time. In most cases, a reboot or 2 resolves the problem. We figured it was because of the lack of TS licenses. I spoke with Citrix and they said we had to have the licenses, but it begs the question that if we have to have the licenses, how does it work the majority of the time without them!!?? I have not received a straight answer yet and before I tell my client to shell out more money, I need to understand the technical reasoning for how this is actually working if we are breaking the rules here. We will buy the licenses if necessary, but there has to be an explanation for this. I am hoping the community can help where Citrix apparently cannot. Thanks much!

• sporadic routing to another website when opening a common url

  I have a strange problem in our office: Sometimes when opening a url from one of our projects random url in any browser not the right website shows up but some other website. In most of the cases it redirects to google.com with some parameters like https://www.google.de/?gfe_rd=cr&ei=krOOU8_kGcSKswadyYDQBw&gws_rd=ssl or just the ugly google 404 page). But today it remains on the origial url but shows up the the content of http://debug.netdna-cdn.com/. This happens about 1 time a week and for no apparent reason. Even stranger it only occurs on a single pc in the network. It now happens on two different computers in the network. Both use windows 8. The problem cannot be fixed by clearing the browser cache but by rebooting the pc or using ipconfig /flushdns. So I think it has something to do with the dns cache of the machine. But I have no idea what the reason is for this and how i can figure out how to solve it. Any ideas?

• Adding a prefix or postfix to a Word 2013 quotation source

  I am using the German version of Word 2013, so I am not absolutely sure, if "quotation source" is the term being used in the English version. I am talking about the automatic text field, one can get via "References" (German: "Verweise"), "Insert quotation" (German: "Zitat einfügen"). Then one gets a drop down menu with all the entries from the biobliography, one can pick one and then an automatic text field is inserted into the text. After it is hopefully clear what I am talking about, here is the question: I choosed the citation style "ISO 690" that generates labels of the pattern "(author+year)" in round parentheses. Sometimes I have to append a prefix or postfix to the label, but this prefix/postfix must go into the parantheses. Is there any way how I can do this? For example, I can add page numbers to the end of a quotation label via a special dialog box that appears after a right click onto the text field and choosing "Edit quote" (German: "Zitat bearbeiten"). But there are a lot more cases of optional pre-/postfixes than page numbers. I am looking for a way to add general pre-/postfixes.

• Strange Behaviour with Unicode Characters in Windows

  Ok, I do not know if this is a programming question, but it certainly is a technical one so I am asking it here. I was working on some internationalization stuff in my PHP code, and in order to ensure that my generated HTML shows up Unicode correctly based on the encoding and stuff I decided to add some Chinese text to my PHP page, which then echoes it into the browser to complete my test case. So I went into google and typed "Chinese", copied the first Chinese text that the search returned (which was ??/??). I then copied it into Notepad++ which is my editor, and to my surprise showed up as boxes similar to [][]/[][]. So I thought the encoding in Notepad++ was messed up and I changed the encoding to UTF-8 and UCS, neither worked. I did it fresh in a newly encoded file, still I got the boxes. The same content when I paste into Google and StackOverFlow (like I did in this posting) shows up correct Chinese! I even opened up Windows Clipboard Viewer and the content is represented in the Clipboard as boxes! I tried pasting it into Windows Explorer address bar and using to rename a file to, but I still get boxes. But it shows up correctly when pasted into my Chrome Browser address bar! Is this a Windows issue? Since I am able to paste it correctly in SO, the data in memory should be encoded correctly right? But if that is the case why does it show up as boxes in the Clipboard Viewer? I am confused here...By the way I am using Windows XP with SP3. (I am asking this question here, even if it is not programmatic, because it is preventing me from running my programming test cases..)

• Can a VM perform better when only two cores instead of four cores are presented to it?

  We had a VMWare VM at work with two cores allocated to it that ran a pretty heinous process in IIS. Under load the process was maxing out the CPU usage on both cores, so we asked our system engineers to present the other two cores of the physical processor to the VM. The engineer immediately said that this would not improve performance at all, but would make the VM perform worse. That statement didn't make much sense to me, and I'm wondering how what the engineer said could be true. Are there actually cases where four cores presented to a VM would cause worse performance than two cores on the same physical hardware? Let's assume an ideal situation where there's only one VM on the host server, so nothing is being shared with other OS instances. I believe the physical server had a single quad core processor, and was most likely hosting multiple VMs. I don't really know what version of ESX was running on the host, nor do I know with certainty what the physical processor config was, but from within the VM I had access to, I saw two 3.33 GHz AMD processors. In the end, I never got to test the engineer's assertion out because (while we were trying to get the VM upgraded) we were able to optimize the process and reduce it's CPU consumption, and 2) we ended up migrating to a different VM on another ESX server which had four cores presented to it.

• How to get IE to open JavaScript as text

  I am running IE 9. Up until last week sometime, if I would put the URL of a JavaScript file in the address bar, it would show the JavaScript as text in the browser window. Now when I do that, it wants to download the JavaScript file. How can I revert it to the previous handling? This is annoying since I'm developing a web application and if I can get it to display the .js files as text in the browser, then I can refresh it to force the cache to update. Update: I've tested on several co-workers machines. For some, browsing to .js files renders them in the browser (IE 9 in all cases). In others, it asks for a download. File associations don't seem to have any effect. One co-worker we tested with IE and Chrome. IE wanted to download it, but Chrome rendered it as text. This makes me think it's an IE issue and not an OS issue.

• Constructor and Destructor of a singleton object called twice

  I'm facing a problem in singleton object in c++. Here is the explanation: Problem info: I have a 4 shared libraries (say libA.so, libB.so, libC.so, libD.so) and 2 executable binary files each using one another shared library( say libE.so) which deals with files. The purpose of libE.so is to write data into a file and if the executable restarts or size of file exceeds a certain limit it is zipped and a new file is created with time stamp in name. It is using singleton object. It exports a handler class for getting and using singleton. Compressing only happens in the above said two cases. The user/loader executable can specify the starting name of file only no other control is provided by handler class. libA.so, libB.so, libC.so and libD.so have almost same behavior. They all have a class and declare and object of an handler which gets the instance of the singleton in libE.so and uses it for further purpose. All these libraries are linked to two executable binary files. If only one of the two executable runs then its fine, But if both executable runs one after other then the file of the first started executable gets compressed. Debug info: The constructor and destructor of the singleton object is called twice.(for each executable) The object of singleton is a static object and never deleted. The executable is not able to exit/return gives: glibc detected * (exe1 or exe2): double free or corruption (!prev): some_addr * Running with binaries valgrind gives that the above error is due to the destructor of the singleton object.   My problem is that in Windows, there are command line windows that close immediately after execution. To solve this, I want the default behavior to be that the window is kept open. Normally, this behavior can be avoided with three methods that come to my mind: Putting a pause line after batch programs to prompt the user to press a key before exiting Running these batch files or other command line manipulating tools (even service starting, restarting, etc. with net start xy or anything similar) within cmd.exe(Start - Run - cmd.exe) Running these programs with cmd /k like this: cmd /k myprogram.bat But there are some other cases in which the user: Runs the program the first time and doesn't know that the given program will run in Command Prompt (Windows Command Processor) e.g. when running a shortcut from Start menu (or from somewhere else), OR Finds it a little bit uncomfortable to run cmd.exe all the time and doesn't have the time/opportunity to rewrite the code of these commands everywhere to put a pause after them or avoid exiting explicitly. I've read an article about changing default behavior of cmd.exe when opening it explicitly, with creating an AutoRun entry and manipulating its content in these locations: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor\AutoRun HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Command Processor\AutoRun (The AutoRun items are _String values_...) I put cmd /d /k as a value of it to give it a try, but this didn't change the behaviour of the stuffs mentioned above at all... It just changed the behaviour of the command line window when opening it explicitly (Start-Run-cmd.exe). So how does it work? Can you give me any ideas to solve this problem?

• How to boost playback volume in real time on media recorded with a very low volume.

  I have never heard a satisfactory answer to this often misunderstood question, let me explain. Lets say I have a sound card and earphones/speakers that can play back audio loud enough in most cases. This is great but the problem is that you always find people who do not know how to record audio, from Youtube video's to music. So now you end up with a audio playback that only uses 10% or less of the capacity of your sound hardware, in vista/win 7 you will see this frequently in the mixer with the volume pushed up to max but the green sound level only goes up a millimeter or two. I am looking for (preferably free) software or a method to boost the sound level of any audio from any source in real time to use more of my hardware capacity similar to what VLC media player can do. Oh and please, do not tell me it is impossible. I am not trying to boost the volume past what my hardware is capable of, I am just trying to use my hardware's full capacity. Also please do not tell met to buy new hardware, I know I can use hardware amplification, I don't want to (like many others) spend money on a simple little problem like this. Thanks!
