  • RIA IDE - Visual Studio 2010, FlashBuilder and ExtJS Designer

    I've been playing around with Flex4 - the trial version - and is really quite good in terms of layout development - since I'm starting a new RIA project and we still on the "what platform" phase I better listen what you guys have to say. In Flashbuilder I can do the layout and mix with the back end script code really fast - the version 4 give me the power to even test the functionality of the server side script, etc and since I can use Fllashbuilder as a Eclipse plugin, I end up with only one IDE. On the other hand, with Silverlight, it looks like if I want a "drag and drop" approach to build my interface I would need Expression Blend and Visual Studio (full or express version). Is there a way out that? I mean, Visual Studio 2010 will come with some sort of Silverlight component palet so that you can easily drag and drop it on your interface like you would do with WPF, etc? I don't wanna use Blend - is way too much for what we need - taking the "coding XAML" by hand is out of question as well. A third approach is to use ExtJS - they have a new designer IDE that looks promising.

  • Update Web Reference in Visual Studio

    Hi, I have inherited a web site project that makes use of a number of WCF Web Services hosted on a BizTalk server. We have two environments that I need to deploy this project to, with different URLs for the different BizTalk servers. i.e. In the Staging environment, I need to point the services at xx.xx.xx.101 In the Live environment, I need to point them at xx.xx.xx.102, or whatever. Currently, we've got all of the URLs stored in keys in the web.config file, so that we can change them dynamically... Unfortunately this isn't working! If I change the URL in the web.config to something other than what the project was compiled with, I get an error when calling the service: Server did not recognize the value of HTTP Header SOAPAction: xx.xx.xx.101\ServiceName\MethodName I'm told that the only way they've known to deploy this is to update the web.config URLs, change all of the web references in Visual Studio to match, click on "update web reference" for each reference in Visual Studio, and then compile. It's driving me mad! I've written a pre-build NAnt script to go through and replace all instances of the URL found anywhere in the project directory, and even that isn't making any difference. There must be something else being pulled down from the service when I click the "update reference", but I'm new to working with web services, and so I'm not sure what. Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a way to do this programatically? Thanks.

  • Debugging a local SQL Server 2008 stored proceedure from Visual studio 2008

    Hi all, There are a few posts about this question around but most concern remote debugging - here everything is on same machine. Visual studio 2008. I have a data connection to localhost SQL Server 2008 using Windows authentication with an admin account - this account is a member of sysadmin in SQL server. I double click stored proc and add a break point. I right click and select "Step into stored proceedure". I get the loathed and feared "Canceled by user." in output window. Does anyone know whats doing? Further - right clicking on the data connection shows both "Application debugging" and "Allow SQL/CLR Debugging". I have checked "Enable SQL Server debugging" on the properties of the C# client app. If run that in debug and try to step in to stored proc code "command.ExecuteNonQuery()" then the break points in the stored proc become disabled and are not pulled. After doing this once the right click on stored proc "Execute" and "Step into stored proceedure" are greyed/disabled. To get them back I have to restart visual studio (refresh connection doesn't do it). Any help much appreciated!! Cheers.

  • What would cause ANY .NET application to crash immediately... except a project I create and Debug in

    My software recently got deployed to a customer who said that the application was crashing immediately after it started. After some initial debugging, the customer provided me remote access to one of the computers which was unable to run the application. I found that the crash wasn't specific to my application. Any application which depended on the .NET framework crashed immediately. Conveniently, Visual Studio 2008 was installed so I created a quick hello world application on it and clicked Debug. The application worked fine. But, then when I tried to execute the generated binaries in the /bin/Debug/HelloWorld.exe directory outside of visual studio it crashed. List of things i've tried (UPDATED): I checked that "Everyone" has Read&Execute permissions for c:\Windows. To test that the problem was with the .NET Framework (and not my application), I attempted to download Paint .NET on to the computers. The setup frontend crashed in the same manner. Performed a repair of the .NET framework as outlined in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/908077 (Boy was this fun and time consuming). No luck. Installed .NET 3.5 SP1 (before it just had .NET 3.5) Note: my application targets 2.0 so I did this more as a long shot... but i learned in the process that .NET 3.5 SP1 also updates the underlying frameworks. Ran Aaron Stebner's .NET Setup Verification Tool. This tool indicated that .NET was successfully installed. (I forget if i checked all the versions but at least 2.0 worked). Tested some mini hello world applications which were targeted for .NET 2.0 and .NET 3.5 and both crashed in the same way. Tried launching .NET apps via windbg cmd line. Doing this did allow me invoke my simple hello world applications. So, simple .NET hello world works when invoked by windbg or by launching via debug in visual studio... but doesn't if i try to execute it standalone. I created a dump file using WinDbg. It wasn't all that revealing to me.   • 3d Studio Max and 2+CPUs - Core limit ?

    Hi guys, I am scouting for parts to put in a new machine, and in the process, while looking at different benchmarks I stumbled upon this benchmark and it got me a bit worried. Quote form it: Noticably absent from this review is an old-time favorite, 3ds Max. I did attempt to run our custom 3ds Max benchmark on both the 2009 and 2010 versions of the software, but the application would simply not load on the Westmere box with hyper-threading enabled. Evidently Autodesk didn't plan far enough ahead to write their software for more than 16 threads. Once there is an update that addresses this issue, I will happily add 3ds Max back into the benchmarking mix. Since I was looking at dual hexa-core Xeons (x5650), that would put my future machine at 24 logical cores which (duh) is well over 16 cores and since I'm mostly building this for 3DS Max work, you can see how this would seriously spoil my plans. I tried looking for additional information on this potential issue, but the above article seems to be the only one who mentions it. Could anyone who has access to a 16 core machine or an in-depth knowledge about 3DS Max please confirm this ? Any help would be much appreciated !

    When I run the this select '$(''test'')' in SQL Management Studio 2008 it returns $('test') When I run sqlcmd -S SERVER -E -d DATABASE -q "select "$(''test'')" on the command line it returns Sqlcmd: Error: Syntax error at line 1 near command '''. If I remove the dollar sign it works. Is the "$" a special character? Is this a sqlcmd bug? How can I change the script to get the desired result.

Based on conversations with friends T4 in VS2010 T4 is going to be even better. So the question is: do I keep riding the CodeSmith bus or is it time to start converting all of my templates to T4?

  • Sql Server Management Studio: Change Prefix or Suffix characters

    I have an instance of SSMS 2008, for which the option to edit data in a table doesn't work. If I right-click on any table in the Object Explorer and select 'Edit top 200 rows' I get an error dialog 'Invalid prefix or suffix characters. (MS Visual Database Tools)'. The error seems to be associated specifically with SSMS, not with SQL Server (because this SSMS instance gives the same error no matter what database I connect to, but I've verified I can connect to some of the same databases using SSMS on other machines without the error). (However, our firewall prevents me using SSMS on other machines for some crucial tasks, so I do need to fix the problem). Googling for the error suggests that I should change the prefix, suffix or escape character, but without any indication of how you can make that change in SSMS. I'd also note that I'm not aware of having done any customization on SSMS since installing it, so would be surprised at having to make such a change now. Does anyone have any idea what the error message means or what I can do about it? Or how I can change the prefix/suffix/escape characters if that is really the problem.

For example, TSD01268 = normal action successful TSD01236 = missing referenced file (fail) TSD01237 = missing script file (fail) TSD00566 = deployment script generated to _ The way we are wrapping calls to VsDbCmd.exe means catching the %errorlevel% isn't always reliable so we also like to check the output for certain error conditions. It would be nice to see a consolidated list somewhere.
