• .NET WF4: Should it be in the middle of everything?

  I am aware that WF4 (Windows Workflow 4.0, part of .NET 4.0) is a significant rework and redesign of WF3, where much of what made WF3 a poor technology choice has been cleaned up in WF4. For example, as far as I can tell, WF4 (Windows Workflow 4.0) activities are more or less testable with [TestMethod] and mocking. This among other things, like improved performance, has grabbed my attention about the technology again, whereas I had previously pooh-poohed WF3. I'm working on a new architecture for essentially an n-tier collaborative application (not enterprise-class, just a smallish project with potential to grow significantly) where I'm already trying to discipline myself to use IoC and, to some extent, TDD, and I'm wondering, in general terms, whether it is wiser to just hand-code workflow logic or if I should delve into learning and integrating WF4 so that WF becomes literally the controller of the entire application, i.e. the practical C in "MVC" (not ASP.NET MVC but rather the pattern). So should workflow activities in WF4 be the primary controller for a highly expandable/growable web-based collaborative application? Or am I asking entirely the wrong question? This is a vague question, I'm sure, so abstract answers are as welcome as specific ones.

• Using IsolatedStorage on a IIS server

  I'am a bit confusing about the use of Isolated Storage on an IIS server. I understand the goal of Isolated Storage : provides a safe place to store data with no worry about how and where is this place. Since Isolated Storage has a by-user and by-assembly approach, I'am not to wild about using it on a IIS server where applications have almost their own identity. I haven't really seen the interest of impersonating a web application and almost never seen impersonated web applications myself but this is my point of view. Using Isolated Storage on a server mean : Using Isolated stores in \Documents and Settings\<user>\ Which mean \Documents and Settings\Default User\ when the application pool is owned by Local System or Network Services I guess Which also mean Write rights on this folder for Local System or Network Services Using of impersonation Regarding a web application (logic), these ideas are confusing me... Document and Settings ? Default User ? Enable impersonation just for storage ? No control about storage on server ? Uh ? And then I'am a front of a dilema : use System.IO.Packaging (with Isolated Storage inside) on web applications or find an alternative ? Am I wrong in my approach ? Did I miss something ? Any point of view is appreciated and an explanation about the Isolated Storage with IIS philosophy could be an anwser. Thanks !

• Resizing image algorithm in python

  So, I'm learning my self python by this tutorial and I'm stuck with exercise number 13 which says: Write a function to uniformly shrink or enlarge an image. Your function should take an image along with a scaling factor. To shrink the image the scale factor should be between 0 and 1 to enlarge the image the scaling factor should be greater than 1. This is not meant as a question about PIL, but to ask which algorithm to use so I can code it myself. I've found some similar questions like this, but I dunno how to translate this into python. Any help would be appreciated. • Powershell / .Net: Get a reference to an object returned by a method

  I am teaching myself PowerShell by writing a simple parser. I use the .Net framework class Collections.Stack. I want to modify the object at the top of the stack in place. I know I can pop() the object off, modify it, and then push() it back on, but that strikes me as inelegant. First, I tried this: $stk = new-object Collections.Stack $stk.push( (,'My first value') ) ( $stk.peek() ) += ,'| My second value' Which threw an error: Assignment failed because [System.Collections.Stack] doesn't contain a settable property 'peek()'. At C:\Development\StackOverflow\PowerShell-Stacks\test.ps1:3 char:12 + ( $stk.peek <<<< () ) += ,'| My second value' + CategoryInfo : InvalidOperation: (peek:String) [], RuntimeException + FullyQualifiedErrorId : ParameterizedPropertyAssignmentFailed Next I tried this: $ary = $stk.peek() $ary += ,'| My second value' write-host "Array is: $ary" write-host "Stack top is: $($stk.peek())" Which prevented the error but still didn't do the right thing: Array is: My first value | My second value Stack top is: My first value Clearly, what is getting assigned to $ary is a copy of the object at the top of the stack, so when I the object in $ary, the object at the top of the stack remains unchanged. Finally, I read up on teh [ref] type, and tried this: $ary_ref = [ref]$stk.peek() $ary_ref.value += ,'| My second value' write-host "Referenced array is: $($ary_ref.value)" write-host "Stack top is still: $($stk.peek())" But still no dice: Referenced array is: My first value | My second value Stack top is still: My first value I assume the peek() method returns a reference to the actual object, not the clone. If so, then the reference appears to be being replaced by a clone by PowerShell's expression processing logic. Can somebody tell me if there is a way to do what I want to do? Or do I have to revert to pop() / modify / push()?

• Right to Left UI in iPhone (Hebrew)

  Hello, I'm struggling in creating a RTL UI in iPhone application. The framework doesn't seem to have any support for RTL languages. The only thing is the alignment inside labels, which is nice, but it conflicts with other controls behaviour. The question is: Is there a working code for a RTL TableView? Something that would handle the disclosure buttons to be on the left, section titles to be right aligned, index view to be left aligned? As far as I understand I cannot move the index view of the tableview, i have to overlay some custom control... Any suggestions/pointers/examples? p.s. this is not a duplication of this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1677988/right-to-left-alignment-for-uitableview since what I am looking for is a deeper customization, not just a new type of CellView. (Update: Mar 10) For now - I've removed support for indexView from the tableView at all, implemented the cells as custom views by myself (with disclosure buttons on the left), and customized the header/footer of the table as well. the only thing that is left is the Index View. • Windows Azure WebRole stuck in a deployment loop

  I've been struggling with this one for a couple of days now. My current Windows Azure WebRole is stuck in a loop where the status keeps changing between Initializing, Busy, Stopping and Stopped. It never goes live, and I can can never see the website as a result. The WebRole is an "out of the box" MVC 2 application with Copy Local set to true on the Mvc dll and I haven't even tried hooking up a storage or WorkerRole yet, and there is nothing really happening inside the Start method that I can see would crash. I've really tried going back to basics to ensure nothing can complicate the process and the website launches without a problem on the Dev Fabric and yes it looks just like the standard "Home", "About" MVC app - just can't get it running in the cloud! Funny thing is, a few days ago, this exact package worked on the staging area in the cloud, and I could even see it in the browser - but could never get it swapped over to production, so I deleted everything and started from scratch, and now I can't even get it running on staging... Does anyone have any ideas on what I could do to diagnose this problem myself because since logging this problem on the forums 2 days ago, there has been no improvement or feedback. • Can't debug Java Windows Services with jhat, jps, jstack

  I frequently showcase the jhat, jps, and jstack tool set to developers on Linux and Mac. However, a developer recently indicated that these are unusable in Windows if the Java app in question is running as a Windows Service. A Sun-filed bug says something very similar, but was closed due to inactivity. I have tested this out for myself, and indeed it appears true, though I can hardly believe it. Here is the setup: Tomcat or similar running as a Windows service with the "Log On As" == "Local System" A user with Admin privileges logged in to the same Windows machine. Admin opens Windows Task Manager, can see java.exe running Admin opens console, types "jps", gets back a list of processes that does not include Tomcat's java service process. As a brute force attempt, get the PID of tomcat as a service from Windows Task Manager. Type jstack < pid . Get a reply: < pid no such process This appears reproducible under Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server, and Windows 7. Java versions 1.5 and 1.6 yield the same outcome. Is there a way from the terminal, even though logged in as Admin, to "sudo up" to get JPS and the other tools to see the java service?

• Managing Cisco programatically; Telnet vs SNMP?

  I was recently approached by a network-engineer, co-worker who would like to offload his minor network admin duties to a junior-level helpdesk tech. The specific location in need of management acts as an ISP for tenants on its single-site property, so there's a lot of small adjustments being made on a daily basis. I am thinking it would be helpful to write him a winform app to manage the 32 Cisco devices, on-site. I'd like to initially provide functionality which could modify access control lists, port VLAN assignments, and bandwidth limitations per VLAN... adding more to the list as its deemed valuable. My initial thought was to emulate a telnet session with the network device; utilizing my network-engineer's familiarity with the command-line / IOS interaction. Minimal time would be required to learn Cisco IOS conventions, myself. Though while searching for solutions, it appears that most people favor SNMP. That, or, their specific circumstances pushed them in the direction of SNMP. I wanted to know if I've overlooked an obvious benefit of SNMP. Should I be using SNMP? Why or why not?

• Java: How do you really force a GC using JVMTI's ForceGargabeCollection?

  I'm not looking for the usual "you can only hint the GC in Java using System.gc()" answers, this is not at all what this question is about. My questions is not subjective and is based on a reality: GC can be forced in Java for a fact. A lot of programs that we use daily do it: IntelliJ IDEA, NetBeans, VisualVM. They all can force GC to happen. How is it done? I take it they're all using JVMTI and more specifically the ForceGarbabeCollection (notice the "Force") but how can I try it for myself? http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/platform/jvmti/jvmti.html#ForceGarbageCollection Also note that this question is not about "why" I'd want to do this: the "why" may be "curiosity" or "we're writing a program similar to VisualVM", etc. The question is really "how do you force a GC using JVMTI's ForceGarbageCollection"? Does the JVM needs to be launched with any special parameters? Is any JNI required? If so, what code exactly? Does it only work on Sun VMs? Any complete and compilable example would be most welcome.

  I recently interviewed a candidate for a new position here. I'd let them type stuff into the interpreter and see how did used python's introspection capabilities too to find out things like what's the re module's method for building a regex etc. Here are my answers - these are in python of course - what are yours in your favourite language? Do you see any issues with the answers I came up with - i.e. how could they be improved upon - what did I miss? • JQuery UI Autocomplete showing as bullets

  The JQuery UI Demo page for autocomplete (link) has a nice looking search box and drop down with nice colors and highlights and such. When I implement it for myself, I end up with a bulleted list. How do I get my drop down of suggestions to look like theirs? A few notes/code fragments: I'm working in .NET land, so I'm using the <asp:ScriptManager> tag with <asp:ScriptReference>s inside it to get the hosted jquery.min.js (1.4.2) and jquery-ui.min.js (1.8.1) files from Google. My input box is fairly simple: <div class='ui-widget'> <label for="terms">Term: </label> <input id="terms" class="ui-autocomplete-input"> </div> My autocomplete looks like: $(""#terms"").autocomplete({source:""GetAttributesJSON.aspx"",minLength:2}); I get the correct data back, so that's not the issue. I just want fancy graphics. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

• How can I make a server log file available via my ASP.NET MVC website?

  I have an ASP.NET MVC website that works in tandem with a Windows Service that processes file uploads. For easy maintenance of the site, I'd like the log file for the Windows Service to be accessible (to me, only) via the website, so that I can hit http://myserver/logs/myservice to view the contents of the log file. How can I do that? At a guess, I could either have the service write its log file in a "Logs" folder at the top level of the site, or I could leave it where it is and set up a virtual directory to point to it. Which of these is better - or is there another, better way? Wherever the file is stored, I can see that there's going to be another problem. I tried out the first option (Logs folder in my website), but when I try to access the file via HTTP I get an error: The process cannot access the file 'foo' because it is being used by another process. Now, I know from experience that my service keeps the file locked for writing while it's running, but that I can still open the file in Notepad to view the current contents. (I'm surprised that IIS insists on write access, if that's what's happening). How can I get around that? Do I really have to write a handler to read the file and serve it to the browser myself? Or can I fix this with configuration or somesuch? PS. I'm using IIS7 if that helps.

• Django DRY Feeds

  I'm using the Django Feeds Framework and it's really nice, very intuitive and easy to use. But, I think there is a problem when creating links to feeds in HTML. For example: <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="{{ feed_title }}" href="{{ url_of_feed }}" /> Link's HREF attribute can be easily found out, just use reverse() But, what about the TITLE attribute? Where the template engine should look for this? Even more, what if the feed is build up dinamically and the title depends on parameters (like this)? I can't come up with a solution that "seems" DRY to me... All that I can come up with is using context processors o template tags, but it gets messy when the context procesor/template tag has to find parameters to construct the Feed class, and writing this I realize I don't even know how to create a Feed instance myself within the view. If I put all this logic in the view, it would not be just one view. Also, the value for TITLE would be in the view AND in the feed.

  I've already worked out this solution for myself with PHP, but I'm curious how it could be done differently - better even. The two languages I'm primarily interested in are PHP and Javascript, but I'd be interested in seeing how quickly this could be done in any other major language today as well (mostly C#, Java, etc). Return only words with an occurrence greater than X Return only words with a length greater than Y Ignore common terms like "and, is, the, etc" Feel free to strip punctuation prior to processing (ie. "John's" becomes "John") Return results in a collection/array Extra Credit Keep Quoted Statements together, (ie. "They were 'too good to be true' apparently")Where 'too good to be true' would be the actual statement Extra-Extra Credit Can your script determine words that should be kept together based upon their frequency of being found together? This being done without knowing the words beforehand. Example: "The fruit fly is a great thing when it comes to medical research. Much study has been done on the fruit fly in the past, and has lead to many breakthroughs. In the future, the fruit fly will continue to be studied, but our methods may change." Clearly the word here is "fruit fly," which is easy for us to find. Can your search'n'scrape script determine this too? • Error checking overkill?

  What error checking do you do? What error checking is actually necessary? Do we really need to check if a file has saved successfully? Shouldn't it always work if it's tested and works ok from day one? I find myself error checking for every little thing, and most of the time if feels overkill. Things like checking to see if a file has been written to a file system successfully, checking to see if a database statement failed.......shouldn't these be things that either work or don't? How much error checking do you do? Are there elements of error checking that you leave out because you trust that it'll just work? I'm sure I remember reading somewhere something along the lines of "don't test for things that'll never really happen".....can't remember the source though. So should everything that could possibly fail be checked for failure? Or should we just trust those simpler operations? For example, if we can open a file, should we check to see if reading each line failed or not? Perhaps it depends on the context within the application or the application itself. It'd be interesting to hear what others do. Thanks, James.

• Low Latency Serial Communications In .Net

  I have been researching various third party libraries and approaches to low latency serial communications in .Net. I've read enough that I have now come full circle and know as little as I did when I started due to the variety of conflicting opinions. For example, the functionality in the Framework was ruled out due to some convincing articles stating: "that the Microsoft provided solution has not been stable across framework versions and is lacking in functionality." I have found articles bashing many of the older COM based libraries. I have found articles bashing the idea of a low latency .Net app as a whole due to garbage collection. I have also read articles demonstrating how P/Invoking Windows API functionality for the purpose of low latency communication is unacceptable. THIS RULES OUT JUST ABOUT ANY APPROACH I CAN THINK OF! I would really appreciate some words from those with been there / done that experience. Ideally, I could locate a solid library / partner and not have to build the communications library myself. I have the following simple objectives: Sustained low latency serial communication in C# / VB.Net 32/64 bit Well documented (if the solution is 3rd party) Relatively unimpacted (communication and latency wise) by garbage collection . Flexible (I have no idea what I will have to interface with in the future!) The only requirement that I have for certain is that I need to be able to interface with many different industrial devices such as RS485 based linear actuators, serial / microcontroller based gauges, and ModBus (also RS485) devices. Any comments, ideas, thoughts or links to articles that may iron out my confusion are much appreciated!

  Hi all, i'm creating custom title for activity by disabling standard one and managing everything myself. I wonder if it's possible to replace/theme standart title to my needs. I can customize size, background image, and text via themes by changing windowXYZStyle items. The only thing i couldn't find - how i can add image instead of text. I've tried requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE) and assign custom layout - but it doesn't seems to work. EDIT : Here is a report of testing suggestions, code is below - result - image view is not showing up. • Subsonic 3, SimpleRepository, SQL Server: How to find rows with a null field?

  How ca I use Subsonic's Find<T> method to search for rows with a field containing the "null" value. For the sake of the discussion, let's assume I have a c# class called "Visit" which contains a nullable DateTime field called "SynchronizedOn" and also let's assume that the Subsonic migration has created the corresponding "Visits" table and the "SynchronizedOn" field. If I was to write the SQL query myself, I would write something like: SELECT * FROM Visits WHERE SynchronizedOn IS NULL When I use the following code: var visits = myRepository.Find<Visit>(x => x.SynchronizedOn == null); Subsonic turns it into the following SQL query: SELECT * FROM Visits WHERE SynchronizedOn == null which never returns any rows. I tried the following code but it throws an error: visits = repository.Find<Visit>(x => x.SynchronizedOn.HasValue); I was able to use the following syntax: var query = from v in repository.All<Visit>() where v.SynchronizedOn == null orderby v.CreatedOn select v; visits = query.ToList<Visit>(); but it's not as nice an short as using the Find<T> method. Anyone knows how I can specify the "SynchronizedOn IS NULL" condition in the Find<T> method?

• Spy++ for PowerBuilder applications

  Hi, I'm trying to write a tool which lets me inspect the state of a PowerBuilder-based application. What I'm thinking of is something like Spy++ (or, even nicer, 'Snoop' as it exists for .NET applications) which lets me inspect the object tree (and properties of objects) of some PowerBuilder-based GUI. I did the same for ordinary (MFC-based) applications as well as .NET applications already, but unfortunately I never developed an application in PowerBuilder myself, so I'm generally thinking about two problems at this point: Is there some API (preferably in Java or C/C++) available which lets one traverse the tree of visual objects of a PowerBuilder application? I read up a bit on the PowerBuilder Native Interface system, but it seems that this is meant to write PowerBuilder extensions in C/C++ which can then be called from the PowerBuilder script language, right? If there is some API available - maybe PowerBuilder applications even expose some sort of IPC-enabled API which lets me inspect the state of a PowerBuilder object hierarchy without being within the process of the PowerBuilder application? Maybe there's an automation interface available, or something COM-based - or maybe something else? Right now, my impression is that probably need to inject a DLL into the process of the PowerBuilder application and then gain access to the running PowerBuilder VM so that I can query it for the object tree. Some sort of IPC mechanism will then let me transport this information out of the PowerBuilder application's process. Does anybody have some experience with this or can shed some light on whether anybody tried to do this already? Best regards, Frerich

• Force full garbage collection when memory occupation goes beyond a certain threshold

  I have a server application that, in rare occasions, can allocate large chunks of memory. It's not a memory leak, as these chunks can be claimed back by the garbage collector by executing a full garbage collection. Normal garbage collection frees amounts of memory that are too small: it is not adequate in this context. The garbage collector executes these full GCs when it deems appropriate, namely when the memory footprint of the application nears the allotted maximum specified with -Xmx. That would be ok, if it wasn't for the fact that these problematic memory allocations come in bursts, and can cause OutOfMemoryErrors due to the fact that the jvm is not able to perform a GC quickly enough to free the required memory. If I manually call System.gc() beforehand, I can prevent this situation. Anyway, I'd prefer not having to monitor my jvm's memory allocation myself (or insert memory management into my application's logic); it would be nice if there was a way to run the virtual machine with a memory threshold, over which full GCs would be executed automatically, in order to release very early the memory I'm going to need. Long story short: I need a way (a command line option?) to configure the jvm in order to release early a good amount of memory (i.e. perform a full GC) when memory occupation reaches a certain threshold, I don't care if this slows my application down every once in a while. All I've found till now are ways to modify the size of the generations, but that's not what I need (at least not directly). I'd appreciate your suggestions, Silvio P.S. I'm working on a way to avoid large allocations, but it could require a long time and meanwhile my app needs a little stability

• C++ Swig Python (Embedded Python in C++) works in Release but not in Debug

  Platform: Windows 7, 64 bit (x64), Visual Studio 2008 I chose Python & Swig binding as the scripting environment of the application. As a prototype, created a simple VS solution with main() which initializes Python (Py_Initalize, Py_setPyHome, etc) & executes test.py. In the same solution created another project which is a DLL of a simple class. Used SWIG to wrap this class. This DLL is the _MyClasses.pyd. test.py creates the objects of my class & calls its member functions. All this works like a charm in the Release mode. But does not work in Debug mode (even tried banging my head on the laptop ;-) ). Output of my work looks like this (in both release & debug): x64 -debug - _MyClasses.pyd - MyClasses.py - test.exe - test.py - python26.dll - python26_d.dll Note that the debug version is linked against python26_d.lib. Had to build python myself for this! test.py import MyClasses print "ello" m = MyClasses.Male("John Doe", 25) print m.getType() Male is the C++ class. • What does this code from AuthKit do? (where are these functions and methods defined?)

  I am trying to implement my own authentication method for AuthKit and am trying to figure out how some of the built-in methods work. In particular, I'm trying to figure out how to update the REMOTE_USER for environ correctly. This is how it is handled inside of authkit.authenticate.basic but it is pretty confusing. I cannot find anyplace where REMOTE_USER and AUTH_TYPE are defined. • How to avoid using this in a contructor

  I have this situation: interface MessageListener { void onMessageReceipt(Message message); } class MessageReceiver { MessageListener listener; public MessageReceiver(MessageListener listener, other arguments...) { this.listener = listener; } loop() { Message message = nextMessage(); listener.onMessageReceipt(message); } } and I want to avoid the following pattern: (Using the this in the Client constructor) class Client implements MessageListener { MessageReceiver receiver; MessageSender sender; public Client(...) { receiver = new MessageReceiver(this, other arguments...); sender = new Sender(...); } . . . @Override public void onMessageReceipt(Message message) { if(Message.isGood()) sender.send("Congrtulations"); else sender.send("Boooooooo"); } } The reason why i need the above functionality is because i want to call the sender inside the onMessageReceipt() function, for example to send a reply. But I dont want to pass the sender into a listener, so the only way I can think of is containing the sender in a class that implements the listener, hence the above resulting Client implementation. Is there a way to achive this without the use of 'this' in the constructor? It feels bizare and i dont like it, since i am passing myself to an object(MessageReceiver) before I am fully constructed. On the other hand, the MessageReceiver is not passed from outside, it is constructed inside, but does this 'purifies' the bizarre pattern? I am seeking for an alternative or an assurance of some kind that this is safe, or situations on which it might backfire on me.
