• Safest way (i.e. HTTPS, POST, PGP) to send decryption keys through the web?

  I am in the final stages of development for my Revit plugin. This plugin is programmed in C#, and distributed via a DLL. One of the DLLs is an encrypted SQLite database (with proprietary data) that is in the form of a DLL. Currently, in development stages, the decryption key for the SQLite database is hardcoded in my main DLL (the program's DLL). For distribution, since DLLs are easily decompilable, I am in need of a new method to decrypt the DLL. My solution is to send our decryption keys from our servers securely to the host's computer. I was looking in POST, thinking it was more secure than GET, but upon research, it appears it's similarly insecure, only more "obscure" than GET. I also looked into HTTPS, but Hostgator requires extra money for HTTPS use. I am in need of some advice - are there any custom solutions I can do to implement this?

  I have a prospect with both an idea and an existing customer of theirs who want to pay for this idea to be implemented. The customer want to pay only when the implementation is complete. My prospect has separate investors that will fund the implementation. The prospect wants to know how much I will charge for the implementation so that he knows how much to ask the investors for. Before I can estimate reliably I need to work with the prospect to develop an implementation plan. This planning work will take time that I want to charge for. The prospect doesn't have enough money to pay me until the investment. I want to make sure I am paid for the planning. How can I resolve this?

  I have been looking around a little bit, but most of the discussions are about problems with already existing systems (particular graphics card and setup etc.). I would like to ask what would be the best option for me if I want to build powerful desktop with triple monitor setup. I have one Dell UltraSharp U2713HM (27 inches, 2560x1440) and I was thinking about getting two more. Would it be possible to have those three working with ubuntu (kubuntu) on any graphics card out there today? What is the best option if it comes to choosing particular model? Should I use proprietary drivers or some open sourced ones? I am not a gamer. I mostly develop on my machines and running some computational tasks, but I would rather like to spend some more money and have setup where I don't see any lags :) thank You very much in advance! • The shortest licenses

  What are the shortest licenses with aims for programmers/code. I have found only MIT that is page-long. What are other licenses that have approximately the same length or even shorter? Edit: Ok, length is not only criteria(I haven't expected one-line licenses, I have understaminate you people). I need easy to read and short licenses. It is meant for people who want to use my code not for lawyers who want to read long licenses. I am creating small codes to use by most people probably free of charge. I don't want useless information to be required, for example: what is X(for example: what is software, source code etc.) very specific information(for example: you can use it shop, opera, school... free of charge; but instead "use it everywhere but don't take money" Depending on type of code I would like to allow/disallow commercial usage.

• Business Analyst vs. Architect [closed]

  I'm a developer of a few years in the financial industry and will soon need to decide what career path to try and row towards. Broadly speaking I have two options: something more 'people' oriented like BAs, or keep coding and try to make more technical decisions like the Architects do where I currently work. Here are my perceptions right now: Business Analysts: get paid way more than devs once they do their job, it seems like they usually have no worries more likely to go REALLY high up in the organization (VPs, etc) Architects: things like certification matters (I see this as a con) called in when things go wrong more than anyone else (weekends & overtime) long career path to get to (dev - senior dev - team lead - architect) I would find the latter more intellectually rewarding, but when I look at it I just can't justify it in terms of lifestyle. Am I wrong / what am I missing? Can you really make a lot of money in a technical role or must you really get out of coding? Thank you for any constructive input.

• Is there any Google Adsense revenue if a visitor rolls over (hovers) on an ad unit?

  I have noticed an increase in interactive flash animations especilly on 300px wide adsense ads. Many of them ask the visitor to rollover to either reveal what the ad is about, show a clip, etc. So I wonder: the visitor is giving attention to this ad, is viewing its message -- without clicking on it. In essence, the ad agency's objective is accomplished without a click, which would be a significant money saver if PPC is considered. This seems very ingenious on their part, and I wonder how this is handled by Google. Shouldn't there be a fee for a publisher if visitors interact with ads, regardless of clicks? CTR becomes irrelevant in this context. Are you aware of anything being discussed in this respect?

• How do you balance between "do it right" and "do it ASAP" in your daily work?

  I find myself pondering this question times and times again. I want to do things the right way, to write a clean, understandable, correct code that is easy to maintain, but what I really do pretty often is writing a patch upon patch just because there is no time, clients are waiting, a bug should be fixed overnight, the company is losing money on this problem, a manager is pressing hard etc. etc. I know perfectly well that in a long shot I am wasting much more time on these patches, but as this time is spread over months of work, nobody cares. Also, as one of my managers used to say, we don't know if there will be this long shot if we will not fix it now. I am sure I am not the only one entrapped in this endless real/ideal choices. So how you, fellow programmers, are coping with this?

  I am searching for any good site that teaches C++, that can explain most to all things about it(general) and has a decent active community. About Me: I am new to programming(knows nothing of it, so please bare with me), I have only learned(to a very basic form) LUA scripting Language, so yes I am your complete newbie. I got interested in programming, from scripting in LUA, so you can say it was my small stepping stone, One would basically take a course in college, but not everyone is well funded for that and I can't buy books for the same said reason(yes I'm somewhat poor, only money for essentials and bills), I'm not trying to get sympathy, just stating my conditions. and Please, something in between the lines of 'Programming for Dummies'(I'm not the brightest crayon in the box), I know this will not be easy, but your help will be most appreciated.   Because i use internet from usb device which supports only on windows, and when I downloaded offline files from packages.ubuntu.com and linuxappsfinder.com and tried to install them in ubuntu, i just double clicked on such file(whose format extension was .deb), then it opened in ubuntu software center but said, dependency is not supported, How can i install softwares and plugins or codecs in ubuntu, without internet? I tried to make file through terminal using zipped files, (tar.bz2), but said something xml not found.

• android game: how to approach mutliplayer

  I'm making a single player game that is near completion, and I am already starting to think about giving the game multiplayer. The multiplayer would basically be finding someone to play against, likely in a waiting room or just have a match-making function, and then having a pokemon style battle between the people in real time. I think it would be relatively simple as I'm just sending information about each attack(move chosen and damage) and what it did back and forth, but I'm not sure what resources to consult for this. I am very new to Android/Java development and really just learning as I go. I have heard a bit about Skiller, but I'm still unfamiliar with using other SDK's and how easy it may be. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what SDK's or methods for accomplishing this. I currently have no money to spend on software development, but I'd like to get started on learning how to do this.

• Cant boot ubuntu 12.10 from LiveCD

  I had ubuntu installed for a few weeks now untill it had a kernel update and i canceled the wifi driver because it didnt worked, since then i wasent able to boot into ubuntu. I tryed to boot from livecd but it didnt worked either. I was able to succssecfuly install windows 7 64 bit now and also format my hard drive but i dont like windows and when i tryed to install ubunru again to still didnt worked. Please help me!   Well i'm running 2 different distro's of linux right now and I decided to make my ubuntu partition my primary partition larger so I took 119.53 GiB out of my other distro's partition and it became unallocated and then I figured Gparted would when I right click on it to resize/move give me the option of using it to make another partition bigger but it did not so I went google searching online and in one post I saw it said you had to format the unallocated space so I formatted it to ext4 the same as my primary partition but still no options to add it to any thing what do I do?

• Get income on a free app, offline?

  I have an Android app which I added adMob ads to. They only work tough when the user is online. Now the problem is, the app is specially made for offline use, so pretty much nobody will ever get to see one. The app is free to download, but I would still like to make a few cents out of it. It currently has around 300, which I guess will look at it about twice per workday. Any help on how to make some money with this free, offline app?

• Is it legal to develop a game usung some version of D&D, something similar to Baldurs Gate?

  For a while now I've been thinking about trying my hand at creating a game similar in spirit and execution to Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and offshoots. I'd rather not face the full bulk of work in implementing my own RPG system - I'd like to use D&D rules. Now, reading about the subject it seems there is something called "The License" which allows a company to brand a game as D&D. This license seems to be exclusive, and let's just say I don't have the money to buy it :p. Is it still legal for me to implement and release such a game? Commercially or open-source? I'm not sure exactly which edition would fit the best, but since Baldurs Gate is based of 2nd edition, could I go ahead an implement that? in short: what are the issues concerning licensing and publishing when it comes to D&D?
