  DISCLAIMER: This is not a post about “Romney” or “Obama”. This is not a post for whom I am voting. Information sourced for Wikipedia. Johnson served as the 29th Governor of New Mexico from 1995 to 2003, as a member of the Republican Party, and is known for his low-tax libertarian views and his strong emphasis on personal health and fitness. While a student at the University of New Mexico in 1974, Johnson sustained himself financially by working as a door-to-door handyman. In 1976 he founded Big J Enterprises, which grew from this one-person venture to become one of New Mexico's largest construction companies. He entered politics for the first time by running for Governor of New Mexico in 1994 on a fiscally conservative, low-tax, anti-crime platform. Johnson won the Republican Party of New Mexico's gubernatorial nomination, and defeated incumbent Democratic governor Bruce King by 50% to 40%. He cut the 10% annual growth in the budget: in part, due to his use of the gubernatorial veto 200 times during his first six months in office, which gained him the nickname "Governor Veto". Johnson sought re-election in 1998, winning by 55% to 45%. In his second term, he concentrated on the issue of school voucher reforms, as well as campaigning for marijuana decriminalization and opposition to the War on Drugs. During his tenure as governor, Johnson adhered to a stringent anti-tax and anti-bureaucracy policy driven by a cost–benefit analysis rationale, setting state and national records for his use of veto powers: more than the other 49 contemporary governors put together. Term-limited, Johnson could not run for re-election at the end of his second term. As a fitness enthusiast, Johnson has taken part in several Ironman Triathlons, and he climbed Mount Everest in May 2003. After leaving office, Johnson founded the non-profit Our America Initiative in 2009, a political advocacy committee seeking to promote policies such as free enterprise, foreign non-interventionism, limited government and privatization. The Libertarian Party is the third largest political party in the United States. It is also identified by many as the fastest growing political party in the United States. The political platform of the Libertarian Party reflects the ideas of libertarianism, favoring minimally regulated markets, a less powerful state, strong civil liberties (including support for Same-sex marriage and other LGBT rights), cannabis legalization and regulation, separation of church and state, open immigration, non-interventionism and neutrality in diplomatic relations (i.e., avoiding foreign military or economic entanglements with other nations), freedom of trade and travel to all foreign countries, and a more responsive and direct democracy. Members of the Libertarian Party have also supported the repeal of NAFTA, CAFTA, and similar trade agreements, as well as the United States' exit from the United Nations, WTO, and NATO. Although there is not an officially labeled political position of the party, it is considered by many to be more right-wing than the Democratic Party but more left-wing than the Republican Party when comparing the parties' positions to each other, placing it at or above the center. In the 30 states where voters can register by party, there are over 282,000 voters registered as Libertarians. Hundreds of Libertarian candidates have been elected or appointed to public office, and thousands have run for office under the Libertarian banner. • 24 Hours of PASS: Whine, Whine, Whine

  24 Hours of Pass (or 24HOP) is a great program offered by PASS to provide free, online training for anyone who wants to learn more about SQL Server.  They routinely have the best SQL Server presenters available for these sessions, and attract hundreds, perhaps even a thousand attendees from around the world.  This is definitely one of the best things they've started doing in the past few years, and every session I've attended has been excellent. So why am I so grumpy about it? I'm not really, pretty much everything here is a minor annoyance that I can deal with.  However since they're so minor they seem to be things that can be easily corrected and would make the process much better. First off, this is my biggest gripe, the registration page: https://www323.livemeeting.com/lrs/8000181573/Registration.aspx?pageName=lj6378f4fhf5hpdm What grinds my gears about this?  I have to scroll alllllllllllllllllllllllllllll the way to bottom to actually register for the sessions.  This wouldn't be so bad except all the details of the session, including the presenter, is in a separate list at the top.  Both lists contain info the other does not, and scrolling between them to determine "Should I make time to listen to this?  Who is speaking at this time anyway?" is really unnecessary. My preference would be to keep the top list and add the checkboxes and schedule info in separate columns.  This is a full-width design, so there's plenty of space for this data, which is pretty small anyway.  The other huge benefit is halving the size of the page, which improves performance and lowers bandwidth usage considerably.  And if you know HTML/ASP.Net, and you view the page source, you can find PLENTY of other things that can be reduced even further.  (not just viewstate) One nice thing that PASS does is send iCal reminders to your email address so you can accept them to your calendar.  Again, they leave off the presenter in the appointment details, while still duplicating the meeting title in the body.  Sometimes I make decisions based on speaker rather than content (Natalie Portman is reading the Yellow Pages??? I'M THERE!) and having the speaker in the iCal is helpful. Next minor annoyances are the necessity for providing a company name, and the survey questions.  I know PASS needs to market themselves effectively, and they need information to do that, and since this is a free event it's really not worth complaining about, but why ask the survey question twice? (once at registration, once again when joining the LiveMeeting)  Same thing for the company name.  All of this should be tied to email address, so that's all I should need to enter when joining the LiveMeeting. The last one is also minor, but it irks me in this day and age of multiple browsers and the decline of Internet Explorer as a dominant platform.  The registration page was originally created in Visual Studio 2003, and has a lot of IE-specific crud representative of the browser situation of 2003. (IE5 references? really? and is the aforementioned viewstate big enough?)  This causes some grief with other browsers like Firefox, Chrome, and sometimes IE8 or 9.  And don't get me started on using the page on a Mac or in Safari. My main point is that PASS is an international organization, welcoming everyone from all levels of SQL Server proficiency, and in that spirit I think it would help to accommodate a wider range of browser software, especially since the registration page is extremely simple.  I recognize that this page is not hosted on the PASS website and may be maintained by some division of Microsoft, but to me that's even worse if MS can't update their own pages.  They've deprecated IE6, so they don't need to maintain support on their own websites anymore. • Taking a screenshot from within a Silverlight #WP7 application

  Often times, you want to take a screenshot of an application’s page. There can be multiple reasons. For instance, you can use this to provide an easy feedback method to beta testers. I find this super invaluable when working on integration of design in an app, and the user can take quick screenshots, attach them to an email and send them to me directly from the Windows Phone device. However, the same mechanism can also be used to provide screenshots are a feature of the app, for example if the user wants to save the current status of his application, etc. Caveats Note the following: The code requires an XNA library to save the picture to the media library. To have this, follow the steps: In your application (or class library), add a reference to Microsoft.Xna.Framework. In your code, add a “using” statement to Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Media. In the Properties folder, open WMAppManifest.xml and add the following capability: ID_CAP_MEDIALIB. The method call will fail with an exception if the device is connected to the Zune application on the PC. To avoid this, either disconnect the device when testing, or end the Zune application on the PC. While the method call will not fail on the emulator, there is no way to access the media library, so it is pretty much useless on this platform. This method only prints Silverlight elements to the output image. Other elements (such as a WebBrowser control’s content for instance) will output a black rectangle. Typically I use it to save a whole page, but you can pass any other element to it. On line 7, we create a new WriteableBitmap. This excellent class can render a visual tree into a bitmap. Note that for even more features, you can use the great WriteableBitmapEx class library (which is open source). On lines 9 to 16, we save the WriteableBitmap to a MemoryStream. The only format supported by default is JPEG, however it is possible to convert to other formats with the ImageTools library (also open source). Lines 18 to 20 save the picture to the Windows Phone device’s media library. Using the image To retrieve the image, simply launch the Pictures library on the phone. The image will be in Saved Pictures. From here, you can share the image (by email, for instance), or synchronize it with the PC using the Zune software. Saving to other platforms It is of course possible to save to other platforms than the media library. For example, you can send the image to a web service, or save it to the isolated storage on the device. To do this, instead of using a MemoryStream, you can use any other stream (such as a web request stream, or a file stream) and save to that instead. Hopefully this code will be helpful to you! • Issues Converting Plain Text Into Microsoft Word Bulleted Lists

  I'm a programmer. I hate status reports. I found a way to live with it. While I am working in my IDE ( Visual Slickedit ) I keep a plain text file open in one of the file/buffer tabs. As I finish things I just jot down a quick note into that file. At the end of the week that becomes my weekly status report. Example entries: The Datatables.net plugin runs very slowly in IE 8 with more than 2,000 records. I changed the way I did the server side code to process the data to make less work for the plugin to get decent performance for the IE 8 users. I made a class to wrap data from the new data collection objects into the legacy data holder objects. This will let the new database code be backward compatible with the legacy code until we can replace it. I found the bug reported by Jane. The software is fine. The database we use for the test site has data that is corrupted in a way it wouldn't be for production site At the end of the month I go back to each weekly *.txt file and paste all of the entries into a MS Word file for a monthly report. I give the monthly report to a liason to the contracting company who has to compile everyone's monthly reports into a single MS Word 2007 document. His problem, soon to be my problem, comes when he highlights my paragraphs like the ones above to put bullets in front of my paragraphs. When he highlights my notes to put bullets in front of them with MS Word 2007, Word rearranges the text a bit and the new line chars/carriage returns stagger the text so the text is no longer in neat chunks. It just puts some kind of newline character in anyway. Searching/Replacing those chars in the text files has the result of destroying the paragraphs. Once my notes are pasted into MS Word, Word automatically translates them into paragraph breaks. Searching/Replacing them there has similar results. Blank lines separating the notes disappears. One big mess. What I would like is to be able to keep adding my status notes to a text file as I am now, but do something different when I paste the notes into MS Word such that my liason can select the text, hit the bulleting command and NOT have the staggered text as shown above. • Best way to process a queue in C# (PDF treatment)

  First of all let me expose what I would like to do : I already dispose of a long-time running webapp developed in ASP.NET (C#) 2.0. In this app, users can upload standard PDF files (text+pics). The app is running in production on a Windows Server 2003 and has a dedicated database server (SQL server 2008) also running Windows Server 2003. I myself am a quite experienced web developer, but never actually programmed anything non-web (or at least nothing serious). I plan on adding a functionality to the webapp for which I would need a jpg snapshot of each page of the PDF. Creating these "thumbnails" isn't the big deal as such, I already do it inside my webapp using ghostscript. I've only done it on 1 page documents for now though, and the new functionality will need to process bigger documents. In order for this process to be transparent aswell for the admins as the final users, I would like to implement some kind of queue to delay the processing of the thumbnails. There again, no problem to create the queue, it will consist of records in a table, with enough info to find the pdf document back. Then I will need to process this queue, and that's were my interrogations start. Obviously the best solution to process it isn't an ASP script or so, so I will have to get out of my known environment. No problem, but I have no idea which direction to go. Therefore, a few questions : What should I develop ? I presumably need something that is "standby" on the server, runs when needed, then returns to idle state until further notice.Should I be looking into Windows service ? Is there another more appropriate type of project ? Depending on the first answer, what will be the approach ? Should I have somehow SQL server "tell" the program/service/... to process the queue, or should I have that program/service/... periodically check the state of the queue and treat new items. In both case, which functionality can I use ? we're not talking about hundreds of PDF a day (max 50 maybe), I can totally afford to treat the queue 1 item at a time. Can you confirm I don't have to look much further on threads and so ? (I found a lot of answers talking about threads in queue treatment, but it looks quite overkill for my needs) Maybe linked to the previous question : what about concurrent call to the program, whatever it is ? Let's suppose it is currently running, and a new record comes in the queue, what should be the behaviour ? I don't need much detailed answers and would already be happy with answers like "You can do the processing with a service, and yes it's possible to have sqlserver on machine A trigger a service start on machine B" or "You have to develop xxx and then use the scheduler to run it every xxx minutes". I don't mind reading articles and so, but I can hardly afford to spend too much time learning stuff to finally realize I went the wrong way for this project, so basically I'm trying to narrow down the scope of matters I need to investigate. Client machine and server are in the same domain. Domain controller (AD) is on another server (also running Windows Server 2003). • How to insert inline content from one FlowDocument into another?

  I'm building an application that needs to allow a user to insert text from one RichTextBox at the current caret position in another one. I spent a lot of time screwing around with the FlowDocument's object model before running across this technique - source and target are both FlowDocuments: using (MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream()) { TextRange tr = new TextRange(source.ContentStart, source.ContentEnd); tr.Save(ms, DataFormats.Xaml); ms.Seek(0, SeekOrigin.Begin); tr = new TextRange(target.CaretPosition, target.CaretPosition); tr.Load(ms, DataFormats.Xaml); } This works remarkably well. The only problem I'm having with it now is that it always inserts the source as a new paragraph. It breaks the current run (or whatever) at the caret, inserts the source, and ends the paragraph. That's appropriate if the source actually is a paragraph (or more than one paragraph), but not if it's just (say) a line of text. I think it's likely that the answer to this is going to end up being checking the target to see if it consists entirely of a single block, and if it does, setting the TextRange to point at the beginning and end of the block's content before saving it to the stream. The entire world of the FlowDocument is a roiling sea of dark mysteries to me. I can become an expert at it if I have to (per Dostoevsky: "Man is the animal who can get used to anything."), but if someone has already figured this out and can tell me how to do this it would make my life far easier.

• Error while dynamically loading mapi32.dll

  Our application uses Simple MAPI to send e-mails. One of our clients has problems sending e-mail from a session on his terminal server. The mapi32.dll is loaded with a call to LoadLibrary which succeeds, but then our application tries to get the addresses of the functions MAPILogon, MAPILogOff, MAPISendMail, MAPIFreeBuffer and MAPIResolveName. The problem is that GetProcAddress fails for those functions with an ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED (code: 5) except for MAPIFreeBuffer. It looks like some sort of security thing. How can I fix this or should I use another method to send mail? • iCal file that will update the attendee list?

  So I want to add an iCal file to a web page, so that people can add an event to their calendars. But when I view the event in my calendar (Outlook 2007) I want to see everyone who will be attending. How can I do that? I just started experimenting with this, I used Outlook's Save As to create an iCal file for a single event. That works, I can link to that file and other people can add the event to their calendars. But it doesn't tell me who has added it.   I'm getting different values in milliseconds for the same date in past while using JodaTime lib and java.util.Calendar.   I have the following code that I need to migrate from VS 2003 (.Net 1.1) to VS 2008 (.Net 2+) but I get compilation error - System.Xml.Xsl.XslTransform' is obsolete: This class has been deprecated. I probably need to use System.Xml.Xsl.XslCompiledTransform instead. but I do not find the matching Load() and Transform() overload versions that I can use with all the parameters of my original code. in MSDN [How to: Migrate Your XslTransform Code] I only found some simpler cases. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa983475%28VS.80%29.aspx but in my code I see some remarks that hints that the added parameters were used to avoid exceptions, so I prefer to use these parameters. • Outlook Interop Send Message from Account

  Okay, the specs have changed on this one somewhat. Maybe someone can help me with this new problem. Manually, what the user is doing is opening an new message in Outlook (2007 now) which has the "From..." field exposed. They open this up, select a certain account from the Global Address List, and send the message on behalf of that account. Is this possible to do? I can get the AddressEntry from the Global address list like so: AddressList list = null; foreach (AddressList addressList in _outlookApp.Session.AddressLists) { if (addressList.Name.ToLower().Equals("global address list")) { list = addressList; break; } } if (list != null) { AddressEntry entry = null; foreach (AddressEntry addressEntry in list.AddressEntries) { if (addressEntry.Name.ToLower().Equals("outgoing mail account")) { entry = addressEntry; break; } } } But I'm not sure I can make an Account type from the Address Entry. It seems to happen manually, when they select the address to send from. How do I mirror this in the Interop? Thanks! (My Original Question): I developed a small C# program to send email using the Outlook 2007 interop. The client required that the mail not be send using the default account - they had a secondary account they needed used. No problem - I used the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Account class to access the availabled accounts, and choose the correct one. Now, it turns out they need this to work in Outlook 2003. Of course, the Account class doesn't exist in the Outlook interop 11.0. How can I achieve the same thing with Outlook 2003? Thanks in advance.

• Remove mailmerge data source via OpenXML

  I have some code that uses OpenXML to open up a docx file, find all mailmerge fields, and replace them with data (ignoring the datasource that may have been provided). I initially tested this against a document created in Office 2007 and it seemed to work great. We then created one in 2003 based off an Excel spreadsheet data source and saved it to 2007 docx format. When we open the file produced by my code, Word warns the user that it is going to execute some SQL, specifically "SELECT * from 'Sheet1$'". It has options of Yes/No. Selecting Yes requires I find the data source. Selecting No brings me to the document, which appears to be correct. I'm not sure why I'm now seeing this pop up. Perhaps it's due to a different data source for the 2003 document? My hope was that there was a way to delete all references to any datasources and that the pop-up wouldn't show. I found this, but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions?

  Hi, I'm getting the following error whenever my code creates a DataTableReader from a valid DataTable Object: "DataTableReader is invalid for current DataTable 'TempTable'." The thing is, if I reboot my machine, it works fine for an undertimed amount of time, then dies with the above. The code that throws this error could have been working fine for hours and then: bang. you get this error. It's not limited to one line either; it's every single location that a DataTableReader is used. Also, this error does NOT occur on the production web server - ever. This is an example of one of the lines where it falls over: If I step over this line, I get this: However, if I do this in the immediate window: I get no problems. Same goes if I actually use that line in the code. This has been driving me nuts for the best part of a week, and I've failed to find anything on Google that could help (as I'm pretty positive this isn't a coding issue). • Excel 2007 file writer in C# results in a corrupt file

  Hi, I am using a BinaryReader to read an Excel 2007 file from an Exchange mailbox using a OWA, the file is then written to disk using a BinaryWriter. My problem is that the two files don't match when the writer finishes. Worse still Excel 2007 won't open the writen file. Previously Excel 2003 has had no problem with the solution below. And Excel 2007 doesn't have an issue if the file is an Excel 2003 format file, only if the file format is Excel 2007 (*.xlsx). • desktop shortcut icon not showing in web setup project

  i've created a web setup project and i wanted it to create a desktop shortcut to the web application (ex: http://localhost/xx/yy.aspx). up to this point it was pretty easy: i created a shortcut (doesnt matter where), gave it the url i wanted, added this to the User's Desktop special folder of my web setup project, and it was placed on the desktop after the installation. but then i wanted to display my custom shortcut icon. i set the icon of the shortcut i've created on my file system. then i re-included this to the setup project. however after the installation the shortcut kept showing the default IE icon again. (i tried these on windows 2003 server, on win xp the shortcut showed up iconless) after some trials i found another way: i recreated an iconless shortcut on my file system, opened my web setup project, included this shortcut and my icon to Web Application Folder under File System on Target Machine, then clicked on User's Desktop, right clicked on the right hand side blank area, selected Create New Shortcut and chose the shortcut i've just added. Then under User's Desktop i clicked on the newly created shortcut, opened the Properties window and set its Icon property to my included icon. These steps solved it all both on 2003 server and win xp. Though this wasnt really a question i wanted to share it anyways because it was quite annoying.
