• How to find unneccesary dependencies in a maven multi-project?

  If you are developing a large evolving multi module maven project it seems inevitable that there are some dependencies given in the poms that are unneccesary, since they are transitively included by other dependencies. For example this happens if you have a module A that originally includes C. Later you refactor and have A depend on a module B which in turn depends on C. If you are not careful enough you'll wind up with both B and C in A's dependency list. But of course you do not need to put C into A's pom, since it is included transitively, anyway. Is there tool to find such unneccesary dependencies? (These dependencies do not actually hurt, but they might obscure your actual module structure and having less stuff in the pom is usually better. :-)

• Why is curl in Ruby slower than command-line curl?

  I am trying to download more than 1m pages (URLs ending by a sequence ID). I have implemented kind of multi-purpose download manager with configurable number of download threads and one processing thread. The downloader downloads files in batches: curl = Curl::Easy.new batch_urls.each { |url_info| curl.url = url_info[:url] curl.perform file = File.new(url_info[:file], "wb") file << curl.body_str file.close # ... some other stuff } I have tried to download 8000 pages sample. When using the code above, I get 1000 in 2 minutes. When I write all URLs into a file and do in shell: cat list | xargs curl I gen all 8000 pages in two minutes. Thing is, I need it to have it in ruby code, because there is other monitoring and processing code. I have tried: Curl::Multi - it is somehow faster, but misses 50-90% of files (does not download them and gives no reason/code) multiple threads with Curl::Easy - around the same speed as single threaded Why is reused Curl::Easy slower than subsequent command line curl calls and how can I make it faster? Or what I am doing wrong? I would prefer to fix my download manager code than to make downloading for this case in a different way. Before this, I was calling command-line wget which I provided with a file with list of URLs. Howerver, not all errors were handled, also it was not possible to specify output file for each URL separately when using URL list. Now it seems to me that the best way would be to use multiple threads with system call to 'curl' command. But why when I can use directly Curl in Ruby? See, PHP isn't really important as I have hardly any pages that use it, but in VS, if it smells PHP then it won't treat it as HTML and thus will all be plainly formatted.. so.. I'm looking for some sorta HTML/CSS/PHP editor that is free and multi-platform(so I can also use it at my home OpenBSD computer) And please don't suggest emacs or vi. I'm learning more and more of nvi, but I'm looking for a graphical editor right now. Can anyone suggest a good editor for my needs?

• Multi-process builds in Visual Studio 2010: Worth it?

  I've started testing our C++ software with VS2010 and the build times are really bad (30-45 minutes, about double the VS2005 times). I've been reading about the /MP switch for multi-process compilation. Unfortunately, it is incompatible with some features that we use quite a bit like #import, incremental compilation, and precompiled headers. Have you had a similar project where you tried the /MP switch after turning off things like precompiled headers? Did you get faster builds? My machine is running 64-bit Windows 7 on a 4 core machine with 4 GB of RAM and a fast SSD storage. Virus scanner disabled and a pretty minimal software environment.

• How to replace values in multi-valued ESE column?

  I have a multi-valued short ASCII text column in one of the tables in my ESE database, that holds the person's phone numbers. I have the new set of values, and I'd like to wipe the old values completely, and only use the new values. The JET_bitSetRevertToDefaultValue bit doesn't seem to work. While the MSDN documentation says "It causes the column to return the default column value on subsequent retrieve column operations. All existing column values are removed.", I found that it does nothing (no return value is returned). Or, is there an easy way to find out how many values does the column contain (this could be zero, e.g. when I'm doing an insertion, not update)? If it was, I could just run a loop from 'nValues' to 1, erasing the value by setting it to the null while providing the itagSequence value, to achieve what I want. I'm programming C#, and using the latest version of ManagedEsent library. Thanks in advance!

  I'm trying to set up one of my Drupal sites to push a node to another Drupal site in a multi-site configuration. It looks like I need to do this with services somehow, but I can't find any tutorials out there and I need at least to be pointed in the right direction. What I believe I need is set up Services on the receiving site to accept a call from the sending site which will be sending the node object via Json or serialized PHP using a Key that was set up on the receiving site. Can anyone show me an example of this working or give me some insight? thanks

But are there ways to simplify things, so that it returned specific objects with no need in casting Object to a specific class according to its position in the query ? Maybe Spring can simplify things here? It has the similar functionality for JDBC, but I don't see if it can help in a similar way with Hibernate.

  In RFC 2822 (defining E-Mail) is defined, that no line SHOULD be longer than 78 chars (excluding CRLF) and MUST not longer than 998 characters. With quoted-printable longer lines will be broken into more lines, ending each with a '=' until the real linebreak is reached. Conforms a mail to the standard, if it contains lines longer than 78 (or 998) characters but is encoded with quoted-printable? There are arguments, that this isn't compliant, because the receiving mail-client has longer lines after decoding the quoted-printable message.

  I am on FF 3.6 on OS X with Firebug 1.5 and whenever I am using Firebug, no matter what website I am on, a Javascript error always shows up: setting a property that has only a getter Line 0 I have disabled all other add-ons but I still always get this error.   I'm on Windows 7 Powershell and have ncat from http://nmap.org/ncat/ I'm trying to send "foo" to some network device PS> ncat -u 192.168.1.255 6061 foo but it sends "foo\n" (66 6f 6f 0a) and the line-feed makes the device not recognize the command. there's a -C option to add a carriage return, but that's no help. I made a text file containing "foo" and did PS> cat .\test.txt | ncat -u 192.168.1.255 6061 but that also adds CRLF

  Generally speaking, I'm interested in something that can load quickly and, depending on what I want to do, can choose to launch a Virtual Machine that is tailored to my desired activity. So, something that loads to (preferably) a command line, then if I want to run my Windows 7 machine that has all of my programming junk on it, I can simply enter the command to launch some VM player and close it when I'm done.

• How does NMap decide to print a progress line?

  Checking a larger subnet than I normally do; mapping out a cluster suite in a university for a traffic mapping project (permission attained), and I was wondering something. NMap usually prints its progress periodically, but I'm unclear to what that 'periodically' is, because the cirrent scan printed a line for basically every 100th of a percent up to 1% done, then one at 1.5%, and has said nothing since. I suspect that it changes at different 'levels' but does anyone have an actual answer?
