• Apply Group Policy to Remote Desktop Services users but not when they log on to their local system

  Running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 with Remote Desktop Services role. I want to hide the servers drives using a GPO, but not the users local drives when they are logged on to their local system. Using a GPO, I went to "User Configuration - Policies - Administrative Template - Windows Components - Windows Explorer" and enabled "Hide these specified drives in My Computer" and "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" and in both used "Restrict all drives". Then under "Security Filtering" for the GPO, I restricted it to the system running Remote Desktop Services and the specific users who will be using RDS. I then applied the GPO to our domain and it worked a little too well. Not only was I successful in getting the GPO to work for RDS users, but it also affected those same users at their local systems as well. I've tried everything I can think of, but can't figure out how to apply this just to the RDS but not at their local system. What am I missing?

• Large .tmp files in C:\Windows\Temp

  I have a Windows 2008 server which functions as a web service server, and every other week or so, the C:\Windows\Temp folder is filled with large (between 40-300 meg) files with names like: ~DF5D73.tmp, ~DFA95.tmp, etc. They appear My webservices on the server don't create any files with that type of name, and the contents don't appear to help identify them. Process Explorer indicates that w3wp.exe is currently using several of the files, but I can't imagine specifically where they're coming from. • Can't reach custom C# forms application remotely.

  Hello, I'm working in Windows Server 2008. I have a very basic C# forms application (not a service) that is listening on a port, say 56112. When using telnet I can connect from the localhost and send and receive data. For some reason I cannot remotely connect to the application. I know I have a connection because I can telnet to 23 on the remotely fine. I've opened this port on the firewall, created rules in/out in advanced firewall, disabled the firewall completely, and more. Any suggestions would be great!   My Windows 2008 R2 machine is joined to a domain. In the logon screen, if I type in "[email protected]:something" as the username, I can still logon properly, what's the meaning of ":something" appended at the end? I can even see the current user is displayed as "[email protected]:something" in the switch user screen. Is it a feature in Windows? Or is it just a bug? If it is a feature, what's the difference between logging in as "[email protected]" and logging in as "[email protected]:something"? Note that I tried different combinations like "mydomain\username:something" and "mydomain.com:something\username". None of them work except "[email protected]:something".

• IIS 7 throws 401 responses on application whose physical directory has been shared

  I have an IIS 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 box with a relatively fresh install. I've deployed a .NET 2.0 application using windows autentication to the server, and from the default website, added it as an application. I updated the IIS authentication to enable Windows Authentication. When I went to share out the physical directory for the application so that a developer could deploy updates, the users began to receive 401 errors. I can reliably recreate the issue by sharing out the directory of any newly created application. The IIS user has the necessary read/write access to the directory. What do I need to do to keep web users from receiving 401's while at the same time allowing this developer to have access to the physical directory for deployments? Thanks in advance!

  I am currently a high level consumer break/fix technician responsible for about 300-400 repairs a month. I am good at my job, but bored, and I want to move into the enterprise side of my company, dealing with Server 2008 R2 and exchange and switches and routers that cost more than I make in a month. How do I make this transition? Whats the best thing to learn first? Is there a standard trajectory for making this leap from consumer to business? I am full time employed, so going back to school is not a great option, but I have no life, so spending my nights and weekends reading and practicing is totally within my realm. I am basically overwhelmed by the number of things to learn, and looking for any advice you may have on the best way to proceed. • Windows 7 PC refuses to join domain

  So, we're wiping clean all PCs at our office and migrating them to a new server cluster and a new domain. Last night I tested on PC and it mostly worked except it refuses to join to the domain. Now, our domain is named like EXAMPLE.COM. When I just type EXAMPLE the PC can't find the domain controller, even though I can ping it find. If I type EXAMPLE.COM it seems to work. How can I get it to work with just EXAMPLE? That's how I got all the new servers int he cluster to work (about 20 of them) and I haven't had any issues... The only difference between the Windows 7 PC(s) and the servers is that the clients will be on a 10.0.3.X network where as the servers are on a 10.0.1.X network. Oh, the domain controller and all the other servers are Windows Server 2008 R2. Suggestions will be highly appreciated!

  I have setup WDS on Windows 2008 server in a Vmware box so I can practise setting up WDS,the server has DNS and DHCP as well as AD, the boot image is confirmed as working but when my clients try to boot up it does not work. I have checked the following: Clients can ping the WDS server. The WDS service is started Boot images for X86 and X64 are deployed. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WDSServer\Providers\WDSPXE UseDhcpPorts has been set to 0 My clients just receive Error: PXE-E53: No boot filename received. • How to debug high memory usage by registry?

  I have a windows 2008 r2 server running ADFS2 and some web apps that is having issues with low memory. Digging around I found that the 5.5 GB were being used under Kernel Memory (paged). Further digging with Poolmon, I discovered that the majority of that (5GB+) was being used by CM - configuration manager. Also known as the registry. I'm really now sure how to tell why the registry is using so much memory however, or how to release it? Looking at the physical registry files they don't appear that large. • How to monitor the size of files in Windows folder?

  What are some of good ways to automatically monitor the size of files in a directory and send warning email if they get close to a certain limit on a Windows server? I have a Progress DB installation to keep in check, and last week we hit some problems. Apparently, the size of extents has hit 2GB - and Progress won't work past that - we needed to open a new extent. I'm coming from a Linux environment, so I don't know what are the usual to monitor this in a Windows environment (or monitoring tools whatsoever). I prefer some generic solution, as I have a mixed environment (Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 R2). Thanks in advance for all usable alternative answers.

  I'm using windows xp, vista, server 2008 R2, ubuntu-linux 9.10, 9.04, 8.10 desktop editions. I shared some folders/directories in windows and in ubuntu machines. Normally for the first time it's prompted for the password when tried to access the shared folders on either of the machine and again they prompt for the password when the system is rebooted. Recently I've created a batch and sh script which copies from the shared folders from windows to ubuntu and vice-versa. But the scripts cannot automate the password prompt and I'm wondering if I could disable the password prompt of the shared folders on windows and as well as on ubuntu machines so that my script runs smoothly. I don't know if it's possible or not but want to confirm posting here and if it is then nothing but saying need help...!. Thanks all!

• Using 64 bit wuauclt from 32 bit command prompt

  I have a script that for legacy reasons needs to run inside a 32 bit command shell. This script also includes references to certain core windows binaries - most notably wuauclt but others as well - which are not accessible by default within the 32 bit environment. This script is being run in several locations including many windows 7 and server 2008 r2 boxes. I'm aware of the possibility to copy files from the system32 to syswow64 in order to get around this. Is there any better method - something along the lines of adding an entry to the path variable - which will allow me to fall back to these 64 bit binaries from within a 32 bit script?

  We are a small business company that is based in Sydney and opened a new office in London. Number of employees in Sydney office is 25 and in London is 6 employees. So the traffic isn't that high. Files to be transferred are Excel sheets with size of 15mb max. Both locations have MS server 2008 and Fortigate gateways. I set up a site to site vpn but it's extremely slow. Maybe this is because our upload speeds is 1Mbps only but We will increase the upload speed to 20 Mbps in both locations but I am afraid that this will not solve the problem as the 2 locations are far from each other and the upload upgrade won't solve the problem. what's the best way to go? Shall we find a provider for the VPN? or is there another technology that can be used through internet without paying extra costs? Many thanks!

• Win2008 - restrict VPN user permissions

  Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Foundations file server with no AD, only workgroup sharing some folders, and now a RRAS server. Shared folders are open to everyone in the office (XPs and Sevens) without accounts/passwords, but I was thinking about partially limiting access to the new "VPNuser" account. I'm new to Windows Server and its permissions settings: I thought about denying access to vpnuser through NTFS rights in some folders. It doesn't work, but now I'm guessing that the vpnuser is not considered as a logged user (doesn't appear as such) and is considered a "guest", like the rest of people connecting in the office.   We have a majority of mac users but we'd rather support their file sharing using a Windows server with an ntfs drive, or at least a Linux server with ext3. We've had trouble, much trouble, utilizing the OS X server software and after the years are now looking to abandon it. What's mostly holding us back is the fact that the mac users very often utilize symbolic links and other special features that exist for an HFS+ partition. The shared locations are mostly primary storage and not just used as an archive storage location. While there is an option to create symbolic links under ntfs, I'm curious if there is anything I need to look out for if I were to move the files over to a new partition that's hosted from a Windows server from the HFS+ partition; in addition, how well creating a symbolic link from a mac might work. I am also worried about windows backup software and if it will ruin these special sym links, and how placing permissions on sub-folders will work. Alternatively I could remotely backup the files using a mac and Bru, nonetheless I still want to get away from mac server for hosting the shares.

The educational pricing for Microsoft Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 is irresistible as a managed anti-malware solution, but it requires System Center Configuration Manager 2007. I know best practice is not to run System Center Configuration Manager on a domain controller, but it's the only server I have to work with. Will installing SCCM on a domain controller cause problems? What conflicts might I need to take into account when planning deployment?

• Why my webservice not live on internet? [closed]

  I've windows server that goes live on internet, (e.g. www.mysite.com). Then I want to create another site with different port (e.g. www.mysite.com:502). I've create that and it works when I access it on local network, but when I access it from outside of local network (internet) the www.mysite.com:502 can't accessed but the www.mysite.com can accessed. what should I do to make www.mysite.com:502 goes online? I use windows server 2008 standard

  Does anyone out their have rough (I don't need exact) pricing for Symantec (used to be Veritas) Storage Foundation for Windows? Its for Windows Server 2008 R2. Ideally, I would love to know the cost of Storange Foundation For Windows, and also the price of the options (like VRR, HA etc. ) if you happen to know them. Getting the information out of a reseller is like pulling teeth. They want to meet with us and discuss our needs etc. My needs are just to know whether its $100, $500, $1,000 or $10,000 per server in small qtys (i.e. less than 20 licences). Arghh. • MySQL service was shut down - why?

  I have installed MySQL Server 5.5 on the WIndows Server 2008 R2. In the services.msc I see that it has the Startup Type option set to Automatic. Everything was fine until today when that service was somehow turned off, but I did not do this. So, 1) what can makes that service to be shutted down ? 2) Maybe is there any error log ? 3) Is it possible to set that service to be automatically turned on if that situation will come again ?
