• Converting MOD files to quicktime or mpeg for adobe premiere pro

  Ive been Editing lots of videos lately. My company got a video camera: Canon Legria FS200. It saves the movies in a digital format as MOD files. Unfortunately, Adobe Premiere doesnt work with these files. I needed software to convert MOD files to QuickTime or mpeg files. I found a good free one : Its called Mpeg StreamClip:  It works well. and its pretty fast. And its Free. • Should a developer always use version control

  I've heard statements to the effect of: "Well it's just me working on this project so I don't need to put it under source control" as well as, "There is no need to work version controlled on this project, it's so small". It is my opinion that no matter how small the project is, so long as it's adding value to the client (and they are paying for it too) that we, the developer(s), should version control it; especially since its company policy. Am I insane or does my standpoint make sense. Question: Should development work always be version controlled?

• Using AWS or Azure, what to do about emails?

  I'm coming from a background of paying a hosting company X amount per month for a server. This server comes with IIS, WebsitePanel and Smartermail all bundled together. When I create a new domain using WebsitePanel it automatically creates my email account. All I then need to do is configure my DNS to point to the server. I've decided that it is more cost efficient to move to AWS / Azure. Has anyone come from a similar background and moved onto a cloud system? I'd be interested to know what you did regarding emails. So far, these are the suggestions I've seen: Use Google Apps for each domain Use something like Elastic Email to sent out emails Launch a new instance and host an email server on that The first option seems like quite a lot of manual configuration, the second one works good with outgoing emails but what about receiving? Option 3 would make it less cost effective. What is your experience?

• Google accidentally revealed Nexus 5 phone in Android Kitkat launch video

  Today Google officially announced KitKat as the name of the next version of Android OS(v4.4). They posted a video to showcase the unveiling of the KitKat statue at the company’s headquarters, but they accidentally revealed much more. 9to5Google spotted an unreleased Android smartphone in the video and they posted screen grabs of Googlers using it to take photos. This unreleased phone could be the next version of Google Nexus phone. Google few days ago reduced price of Nexus 4 smartphones by $100 and 8 GB version is reported out of inventory. With all these signs it seems to be clear that it is just weeks away for the launch of Google Nexus smartphone. Soon after the news of leaked smartphone spread on blogs, Google pulled Kitkat launch video to private. • Redirect packages directed to port 5000 to another port

  I'm trying to use eboard to connect to the FICS servers (http://www.freechess.org), but it fails because port 5000 is blocked (company firewall). However, I can connect to the server through the telnet port (23): telnet freechess.org 23 (succeeds) telnet freechess.org 5000 (fails) Unfortunately the port number is hardcoded (see here: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1613075.html). I'd rather not have to hack the source code as the author of that thread ended up doing. Can I just forward the port on my local machine using iptables? I tried: sudo iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 5000 -j REDIRECT --to-port 23 and sudo iptables -t nat -I OUTPUT --src 0/0 -p tcp --dport 5000 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 23 but these didn't work... • How can I compile an IP address to country lookup database to make available for free?

  How would I go about compiling an accurate database of IP addresses and their related countries to make available as an open source download for any web developer who wants to perform a geographic IP lookup? It seems that a company called MaxMind has a monopoly on geographic IP data, because most online tutorials I've seen for country lookups based on IP addresses start by suggesting a subscription to MaxMind's paid service (or their less accurate free 'Lite' version). I'm not completely averse to paying for their solution or using the free one, but the concept of an accurate open source equivalent that anyone can use without restriction appeals to me, and I think it would be useful for the web development community. How is geographic IP data collected, and how realistic is it to hope to maintain an up-to-date open version?

  I'm in my mid twenties, and I'm in a safe, comfortable job as a Software Developer. The work environment is great, I'm well paid, the benefits are good. I enjoy my job. Some friends passed my name on to some guys starting a new company. I had some informal chats with them and they liked me. They've asked me to joint their start-up as tech lead, designing and building their product from scratch. They're fully funded, and they know what they're doing. Taking the job would require giving up my safe, enjoyable, relaxed job for a risky, stressful, hard one, albeit with the potential to be really great in future. Should I take the job?

• I.T. degree for game programming?

  Hi, I am a 19 year old who has always been interested in video & computer games. I developed the interested for game programming about three months ago and started researching on the profession. The only degrees always suggested on the internet and in books are those of computer science, physics, mathematics, & game development. BSc Information Technology has been my major for the past two years; and even though my university teaches we the I.T. students computer programming (in c++, c#, java) and offers us the opportunity to undertake some computer science courses of our choice in addition to the regular I.T. courses, I am feeling insecure about my prospects in getting into the profession. My question is: Will a game development company hire me if I exhibit good math, physics and game programming skills with an I.T. degree? If NO, will I have to obtain an MSc in a much more related course.

• How can I create multiple mini-sites with similar/duplicate content without hurting my search engine rank?

  Essential background: I run a small company that lets members of the public post handwritten letters to their local politician (UK-based). Every week a number of early stage bills (called Early Day Motions) are submitted for debate in the House of Commons, and supporters of the motion will contact their local Members of Parliament, asking them to sign the motion. The crux: I want to target these EDMs with customised mini-sites, so when people search "EDM xxx", they find my customised mini-site, specifically targeting that EDM (i.e., "Send a handwritten letter to your MP asking them to sign EDM xxx"). At the moment, all these mini-sites (and my homepage) have duplicate content with only the relevant EDM name, number, and background image changed. (For example, http://mailmymp.com and http://mailmymp.com/edm/teaching-life-saving-skills-at-school-edm-550.php). The question: Firstly, will this hurt my potential search engine ranking? And, if so, what's the best way to target these political campaigns in an efficient manner without hurting my SEO prospects?

• Tool Review: Telerik JustDecompile

  In the next few lines, I will be providing a brief review of Telerik’s JustDecompile, a free .Net decompiler and assembly browser. In using Telerik’s 2012 Q3 JustDecompile release, one can see many great features.  First off, I loved the built-in options for loading .Net assemblies automatically using the Open->Load Framework menu option. Other options enable loading assemblies from GAC, XAP URL or locally from disk. The ability to create an “Assembly List” is quiet handy for grouping and saving a “List” of DLLs to load. All loaded assemblies are shown in the left panel of a split-panel screen. Clicking an assembly expands all namespaces within. Drilling further to class level displays the actual source code in the right panel in either IL, C# or Visual Basic. In conclusion, JustDecompile has grown and quickly matured into an indispensible handy tool for us developers. Telerik’s effort in maintaining and updating JustDecompile as well as the company’s commitment to keeping it free is much appreciated and valued.

  Just had meeting with Fortune 1000 company regarding their private DBaaS or DaaS offering. Interesting to see what DBaaS really means to them: 1. Automated Database provisioning - Being able to 'one button' provision databases and database objects. This includings creating the database instance, creating database objects, network configuration and security provisioning. It is estimated that just being able to provision a new DB table in automated fashion will reduce time required to create a new DB table from 60 hours down to 8 hours. 2. Virtualization and blades - DBaaS infrastructure is all based upon VMs and blades. 3. Consolidation of database vendors - Moving from over ten database vendors down to three.

• Have you tried to switch to different kind of language and find a job in a "new language" ?

  I'm a Java programmer(J2EE/JEE), but I'm thinking about switching to C#. Does any of you have been in my position and have switched from Java to C# or C# to Java or C++ to Java, etc. ?? I'm NOT asking about switching between the same kind of languages, for example Java to Groovy/Scala/JRuby, C++ to C, VB to C#, C# to IronRuby/F#/VB.NET. Or if you company was C++, but has moved to Java(you had no choice and I'm about to make a choice). Side question: How hard was it to get a job in a "new language"?

• Older PHP v/s newer PHP version [closed]

  My company is building a website with database. Programmer's used PHP 5.0. My Service Provider (shared) in the meantime upgraded to PHP 5.3.0. Fixes have been on going and seem endless... Do I move to VPS and install older PHP or should we rebuild with newer PHP? When working remotely with programers what is the protocol regarding delivery of all code? Please what is the industry standard? I need an independent to review their work. How should this be approached?

But I have been working at this firm for a long while and I have deemed this as a necessary evil. It has never caused me an issue so far in the past, but it might if I get partners or a successor.   Imagine that you're interviewing a brilliant CS grad. He's just finished school, has very high grades, and has been performing very well on the interview so far. You reach a point near the end, where you're starting to speak about terms of employment, salary, etc.., and you're trying to show off the environment he'll be working in. When you mention that programmers at your company have systems with two monitors, the interviewee stops you and informs you that he won't need a computer. He only ever writes code by hand, in a note-book, and relies on his phone for sending/receiving email. This is not something he's willing to budge on. Would you still hire him?
