• Did Oracle make public any plans to charge for JDK in the near future? [closed]

  I recently read an article: Twelve Disaster Scenarios Which Could Damage the Technology Industry which mentioned among other the possible "disaster scenarios" also: Oracle starts charging for the JDK, giving the following as argument: Oracle could start requiring license fees for the JDK from everyone but desktop users who haven't uninstalled the Java plug-in for some reason. This would burn down half the Java server-side market, but allow Oracle to fully monetize its acquisitions and investments. [...] Oracle tends to destroy markets to create products it can fully monetize. Even if you're not a Java developer, this would have a ripple effect throughout the market. [...] I actually haven't figured out why Larry hasn't decided Java should go this route yet. Some version of this scenario is actually in my company's statement of risks. I know guessing for the future is impossible, and speculating about that would be endless so I will try to frame my question in an objective answarable way: Did Oracle or someone from Oracle under anonymity, make public, or hinted, leaked to the public such a possibility or the above is plain journalistic speculation? I am unable to find the answer myself with Google generating a lot of noise by searching JDK.

• How to pick a great working team?

  I've just finished my master and I'm starting to dig into the laboral world, i.e. learning how programming teams and technology companies work in the real world. I'm starting to design the idea of my own service or product based on free software, and I will require a well coupled, enthusiast and fluid team to build and the idea. My problem is that I'm not sure which would be the best skills to ask for a programming team of 4-5 members. I have many friends and acquaintances, with whom I've worked during my studies. Must of those ones I have in mind are very capable and smart people, with a good logic and programming base, although some of them have some characteristics that I believe that could influtiate negatively in the group: lack of communication, fear to debate ideas, hard to give when debating, lack of structured programming (testing, good commenting, previous design and analysis). Some of them have this negative characteristics, but must of them have a lot of enthusiasm, nice working skills (from an individual point of view), and ability to see the whole picture. The question is: how to pick the best team for a large scale project, with a lot of programming? Which of these negative skills do you think are just too influential? Which can be softened with good leadership? Wich good skills are to be expected? And any other opinion about social and programming skills of a programming team.

• Understanding Service Compensation part of Industrial SOA series

  Some of the most important SOA design patterns that we have successfully applied in projects will be described in this article. These include the Compensation pattern and the UI mediator pattern, the Common Data Format pattern and the Data Access pattern. All of these patterns are included in Thomas Erl's book, "SOA Design Patterns", and are presented here in detail, together with our practical experiences. We begin our "best of" SOA pattern collection with the Compensation pattern. Compensation is required in error situations in an SOA, as multiple atomic service operations cannot generally be linked with classic transactions this would violate the principle of loose coupling. An error situation of this sort will occur, particularly if service operations are combined into processes or new services during orchestration or by applying the Composite pattern, and the transaction bracket has to be expanded as a result. We need mechanisms to undo the effects of individual services (the status changes in the overall system) and to ensure that a consistent system state is maintained at all times, so as to preserve system integrity. • Data Pump: Consistent Export?

  Ouch ... I have to admit as I did say in several workshops in the past weeks that a data pump export with expdp is per se consistent. Well ... I thought it is ... but it's not. Thanks to a customer who is doing a large unicode migration at the moment. We were discussing parameters in the expdp's par file. And I did ask my colleagues after doing some research on MOS. And here are the results of my "research": MOS Note 377218.1 has a nice example showing a data pump export of a partitioned table with DELETEs on that table as inconsistent Background:Back in the old 9i days when Data Pump was designed flashback technology wasn't as popular and well known as today - and UNDO usage was the major concern as a consistent per default export would have heavily relied on UNDO. That's why - similar to good ol' exp - the export won't operate per default in consistency mode To get a consistent data pump export with expdp you'll have to set: FLASHBACK_TIME=SYSTIMESTAMPin your parameter file. Then it will be consistent according to the timestamp when the process has been started. You could use FLASHBACK_SCN instead and determine the SCN beforehand if you'd like to be exact. So sorry if I had proclaimed a feature which unfortunately is not there by default - Mike

• how to choose a web framework and javascript library?

  I've been procrastinating learning some framework for web apps w/ some library for AJAX, something like django with prototype, or turbogears with mootools, or zeta components with dojo, grok, jquery, symfony... The point is to spend some of my spare time, have "fun" and create cool stuff that hopefully is some useful. I think maybe I wouldn't like something like GWT or pyjamas because I wouldn't like to "get married" with some technology, I want to keep my freedom to add another javascript library, and so on. I didn't decide even the language yet, but I think I'd prefer python. PHP could be fine if there is some framework that is nice enough. Besides that, I don't even know where to start. I don't feel like learning a framework to then realize there is something that I cannot comfortably do, switch to another framework then find that a third framework has something really cool, etc. And the same goes for javascript libraries. So, some guidance would be really appreciated. I don't really know why are so many options available and what do they aim for, I guess some of them focus on some aspects and some on others, but I just want to make cool and nice apps that I can easily maintain, without spending too much time on coding or learning and avoiding the "trapped in the framework" feeling, when doing something is awfully complicated (or even impossible) with compared with the rest of things or doing that same thing on a different framework. I guess in the end I'll go for django and jquery since they are the most widely used options, afaik, but if I was going for the most widely used options I guess I should choose Java or PHP (I don't really like Java for my spare time, but php is not so bad), so I preferred to ask first. I think the question has to consider both, framework and library, since sometimes they are coupled. I think this is the place to ask this kind of things, sorry if not, and thank you.

• Hot Off the Press - Oracle Exadata: A Data Management Tipping Point

  Advances in data-management architecture - including CPU, memory, storage, I/O, and the database - have been steady but piecemeal. In this report, Merv Adrian describes how Oracle Exadata not only provides the latest technology in each part of the data-management architecture, but also integrates them under the full control of one vendor with a unified approach to leveraging the full stack. He writes, "the real "secret sauce" of Oracle Exadata V2 is the way in which these technologies complement each other to deliver additional performance and scalability." Merv interviews two Exadata customers, Banco Transylvania and TUI Netherlands, and concludes that early indications are that Oracle Exadata is delivering on its promise of extreme performance and scalability. His recommendation to IT is to target corporate applications with the biggest potential for speed-based enhancement, and consider whether Oracle Exadata V2 can cost-effectively enable new ways to use these for competitive advantage. • "From Russia with Love" - My Oracle Russian Experience

  Two weeks ago, I traveled to Moscow, Russia. I had the pleasure of meeting with many of our Oracle Partners and Customers in the region.  I also worked with our Oracle Russia team throughout the week building many new friendships. The showcase for the week was an Oracle Support Strategy event for our Oracle Partners and Customers.  It was held at the Kateria-City Hotel, Moscow.  The Oracle Marketing team did an amazing job registering 100+ for the event, and nearly 100 were in attendance.           During the event, I spoke about many different topics. Part was a hands-on workshop to personalize your MOS Dashboard and configure Hot-Topics Email alerts.  Customers learned how to subscribe to newsletters and other Oracle information.  It covered a mulitude of Support Best Practices.  Additionally, I presented Platinum Services to the audience and my colleague Kristophe Hermans, from Oracle Belgium spoke on Proactive Support. In addition, I had the distinct privilege to meet one-on-one with our customers representing OJSC VimpelCom, MTC-Rus and Sberbank.  Pictured with me is Valery Yourinsky, Director of Technology Consulting Dept, FORS Distribution (Oracle Platinum Partner) Finally, I spent 2.5 days with my Oracle colleagues from Oracle Russia.   August 2012 issue of Profit is now available online. Way back in 2003, I wrote my first feature for Profit. It was titled “Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Application Servers (But Were Afraid To Ask),” and it discussed “cutting-edge” technologies like portals and XML and the brand-new Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE; we’re now on Java EE 7). But despite the dated terms I used in my Profit debut, I noticed something in rereading that old story that has stayed constant: mid-tier technology is where innovative enterprise IT projects happen. It may have been XML in 2003, but it’s SOA in 2012. While preparing the August issue of Profit was more than just a stroll down memory lane for me, it has provided a nice bit of perspective about what changes and what doesn’t in this dynamic IT industry. • Installing nvidia drivers causes computer to boot to command prompt.

  Hi, I have an Asus u30jc laptop, which comes with the Optimus prime graphics card switching technology that is now supported under 2.6.35, so I decided to give it a try. First I made sure the discrete graphics card was activated and then I installed the drivers proposed by the ubuntu software repository (nvidia-current). However, after rebooting all I got was a command prompt. My graphics card is a nvidia 310M. This is on Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits. What can I do to diagnose/identify the source of this problem? UPDATE: The messsages in my syslog tell me to check the xorg log: Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-binary[1095]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.053144 seconds Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-simple-slave[1450]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf': No such file or directory Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-binary[1095]: WARNING: GdmDisplay: display lasted 0.038176 seconds Oct 11 12:42:59 u30jc-test gdm-binary[1095]: WARNING: GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors Which I did. I found this message in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log : Fatal server error: [ 113.540] no screens found [ 113.540] What does that mean?

• Procedural world generation oriented on gameplay features

  In large procedural landscape games, the land seems dull, but that's probably because the real world is largely dull, with only limited places where the scenery is dramatic or tactical. Looking at world generation from this point of view, a landscape generator for a game (that is, not for the sake of scenery, but for the sake of gameplay) needs to not follow the rules of landscaping, but instead some rules married to the expectations of the gamer. For example, there could be a choke point / route generator that creates hills ravines, rivers and mountains between cities, rather than the natural way cities arise, scattered on the land based on resources or conditions generated by the mountains and rainfall patterns. Is there any existing work being done like this? Start with cities or population centres and then add in terrain afterwards? The reason I'm asking is that I'd previously pondered taking existing maps from fantasy fiction (my own and others), putting the information into the system as a base point, and then generating a good world to play in from it. This seems covered by existing technology, that is, where the designer puts in all the necessary information such as the city populations, resources, biomes, road networks and rivers, then allows the PCG fill in the gaps. But now I'm wondering if it may be possible to have a content generator generate also the overall design. Generate the cities and population centres, balancing them so that there is a natural seeming need of commerce, then generate the positions and connectivity, then from the type of city produce the list of necessary resources that must be nearby, and only then, maybe given some rules on how to make the journey between cities both believable and interesting, generate the final content including the roads, the choke points, the bridges and tunnels, ferries and the terrain including the biomes and coastline necessary. If this has been done before, I'd like to know, and would like to know what went wrong, and what went right.

• Essbase Excel Add in - S.o.D.

  #cross { font-size: 72pt; } sadly another long lasting friend is about to be buried in the wet, cold data void that holds past programs (... and AOL CDs). The Essbase Excel Add In is about to be de-continued (see  Doc ID 1466700.1) in January '13. The (already out) version 11.1.2.2.x of the Excel Add In must be considered the last release of this particular program (Unless the guys from Applied OLAP bring out their own version next to the openOffice Add In that they already sport). As expected, SmartView achieved parity in functionality with Release 11.1.2.1.102 and ever since then it was just a question of time when our old buddy would get the shoe. For all users out there like me that have known and worked with the Excel Add In for the last decade(s) this is a loss. SmartView may have functionality parity, and may altogether be the stronger, open technology - capable of Planning forms, connection to HFM etc. .But (from my personal point of view) it will not give the end user the same direct access to his databases, with nothing between him and his Essbase Server. Of course it was to be expected that only one of the two could survive and it was obvious that this would be SmartView, so this does not come as a surprise. Still.A minute for an old friend . . . . . . Thank you, and let us look forward! Unless you had other plans for the upcoming season, why not spend it investigating SmartView for your Essbase interaction needs. We hear that the days between Christmas and new year hold unlimited potential to test out new things. Or take it as a new year resolution: "I will switch to SmartView at the earliest possible moment".

• Galaxy Note II MTP on Ubuntu 12.04

  I bought a branding new Galaxy Note II and I tried to mount its storage to my ubuntu laptop. As you know, Android 4.0+ uses MTP by default. Android 4.1 doesn't support USB Mass Storage anymore! So I have to use MTP to open my files via USB. I followed this article to get it work.
