• Windows 8 doesn't automatically join Wi-Fi network if Ethernet connection is active

  In Windows 7, my laptop would automatically join both an Ethernet network and the Wi-Fi network in my house (both going through the same router). In Windows 8, if the Ethernet connection is present, it doesn't join the Wi-Fi network at all. The reason I noticed this is that if Wi-Fi isn't active, I don't see my AirPlay speakers. My wireless printer is also unavailable until I manually connect to Wi-Fi. To recap: When I turn on my computer and it's connected to Ethernet, this is what my Network Connections control panel looks like: After I manually join my Wi-Fi network, it looks like this: I would prefer for it to join both networks automatically on startup, the way it did in Windows 7. Is there a way to make this happen?

• Windows 8, NVIDIA graphics recognition fails

  I just installed Windows 8 Pro OEM 64-bit (clean install) and it won't properly recognize my graphics adapter. When I installed Win8, it automatically installed the BasicDisplay.sys driver dated 6/21/2006. 6.2.9200.16384 (win8_rtm.120725-1247). Hardware - Mobo:MSi G41M-P33 Combo CPU:Intel CoreDuo 6600 Graphics:NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT *OS* - Windows 8 Pro 64-bit OEM The graphics adapter worked fine in Windows XP. The PC is a generic box, bought locally and its mobo failed recently, so I replaced it with the G41M. Microsoft wouldn't let me re-activate Windows XP with a different mobo, so I installed Win8, which appears to work except as described next. Win8 only partially recognizes the graphics adapter and won't allow NVIDIA latest driver installer to see that it's an NVIDIA card. As a result, OpenGL doesn't work, and this is needed by the software I most use. Other than that the graphics look OK. When I say 'partially recognizes', I mean that via the Control Panel, I can see that the adapter is described as NVIDIA, but the driver remains stuck at Microsoft Basic Display Adapter no matter what I try, including "Update driver..." in adapter properties. Display Screen Resolution Advanced Settings Adapter shows: Adapter Type: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter Chip Type: NVIDIA DAC Type: NVIDIA Corporation Bios Information: G27 Board - p381n17 Don't know what this means ... no mention of 9400GT Total Available Graphics Memory: 256 MB Dedicated Video Memory: 0 MB In fact the adapter has 512MB on-board video memory. System Video Memory: 0 MB Shared System Memory: 256 MB And Control Panel Device Manager Display adapters just shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. No other graphics adapter, and no unknown device or yellow question mark. What I have tried so far: 1. Cleared CMOS and reset. Updated BIOS and all mobo drivers as follows: 1st I used Driver Reviver to see if any driver updates were required. It found some but I didn't use that to get the drivers. Then I switched to MSi's own mobo driver utility Live Update 5. This also showed the board needed to update several so I used it to fetch the new drivers. After that it showed that everything was up to date and I checked with Driver Reviver again, which also reported no drivers now needed updating. Rebooted. Went to the NVIDIA site to get the latest graphics adapter driver. Their auto-detect "Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products" said "The NVIDIA Smart Scan was unable to evaluate your system hardware. Please use Option 1 to manually find drivers for your NVIDIA products." So I downloaded 310.70-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe, which lists 9400 GT under supported products, but when I run it, it says: "NVIDIA Installer cannot continue This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware." Connected the display to the on-board Intel graphics (G41 Intel Express), removed the NVIDIA card and rebooted, changed to internal graphics in CMOS. Again it installs the MS Basic Display Adapter, and can't properly run my s/w that needs OpenGL. It runs on other machines with Intel Express graphics (WinXP and 7) Shut down and pulled out the power cord. Held start button to discharge all capacitors. Removed and re-inserted NVIDIA adapter in PCI-E slot and made sure properly seated. Connected the monitor to the card, screwed plug to socket. Reconnected power cord. Started and checked in BIOS that Primary Graphics Adapter was set to PCI-E. Started Windows. Uninstalled MS Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager. Screen blanks briefly, reappears. No Graphics adapter entry was then visible in Device Manager. Restarted PC. MS Basic Display Adapter Visible again in Device Manager. Clicked in Device Manager View Show hidden devices. No other graphics adapter appears, no unknown devices. Rebooted. Tried Scan for Hardware changes. None detected. Tried right-click on MS Basic Display Adapter Properties Driver Update Driver... Search automatically. It replied that it had determined driver was up to date. I checked that there were no graphic driver-related entries in Programs and Features that I could delete (none). Searched for any other drivers with nvidia in their name and deleted them, just keeping the 306.97 installer exe file. Did a Windows Update. Ran GPU-Z which shows (main items): Microsoft Basic Display Adapter GPU G72 BIOS 5.72.22.76.88 Device ID 10DE - 01D5 DDR2 Bus Width 32 Bit Memory size 64MB Driver Version nvlddmkm 6.2.9200.16384 (ForceWare 0.00) / Win8 64 NVIDIA SLI Unknown in the drop-down at the foot, "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" is the only option If I swap hard disks in that machine to one with a Ubuntu 10.4 installation (originally installed on the same PC), lspci shows "VGA compatible controller as NVIDIA Corporation Device 01d5 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])" and "kernel driver in use: nvidia" I'm out of ideas for new things to try and would be really grateful of suggestions. • Installing MFC (vs2005) application on Windows 2008 R2 64

  I've build an application that runs on Windows 2003, it is an old style MFC application. Today I need to install the application on a Windows 2008 R2 64 system. I have failures during installation and the application does not run. The application is build with VisualStudio2005, and uses COM objects. The MSI register the objects but it fails with the error code : HRESULT -2147010895. Any idea why the COM registration failed? I've tried to install the "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)" but it doesn't help. I've tried to register the COM objects with the regsvr32 after the installation but sadly it doesn't help. I've tries to install the application on Windows 2008 R2 32, and it works perfectly. I am quite new with 64 systems, so any help will be appreciated. tia olich

• Unable to diagnose Windows 7 lockup

  Basic info: Laptop Dell Studio XPS 13 (Intel P9600, 4GB RAM, NVidia 9400M card, 256G Samsung PM800 SSD) Windows 7 Ultimate, as well as Fedora 14 Here's the deal - Windows would just lock up out of nowhere, no log entries, no dumps, no BSOD, it just freezes. This happens mostly when idle (but it happened when I was using it too) and does not follow a concrete time frame. No input is accepted - only solution is to hold the power button. Although this sounds like a clean cut hardware issue, the reason I'm willing to rule this out is that my primary OS is Fedora 14. It's been working fine for the past 2 years and I've been stress testing the hardware (intentionally or not) every once in a while with no issues. I would like to ask if there's any way to get a diagnostic output from Windows in a situation such as this. The next step in my testing is to leave it in Safe Mode overnight and see if it locks up but even if I do that, I still need to figure out what component freezes it up during normal operation.

• Scrolling mouse sets windows sound volume

  Suddenly, when I use the scroll wheel of my mouse, it changes the windows sound volume level. I have a HP DV6-2030SD laptop with Windows 7 64 bit and a Zolid p50622 mouse. When I use the scroll function of the mouse pad of the laptop, it does not adjust the sound level. I don't have any special mouse drivers installed, just the standard windows drivers. When I scroll, I see the HP sound level screen: It doesn't do it always, but when it does, it prevents the current window to scroll, which is really annoying. Rebooting doesn't help. I've tried to put the USB dongle in a different port, but this doesn't help either. Any advise on how I can fix this?

• DHCPPloc.exe or equivalent for Windows 7?

  There seems to be some DHCP funnyness going on so I need to run something to show me what's going at a DHCP level. Before I upgraded my machine to Windows 7 I used DHCPloc.exe from the Windows XP support tools, and it worked like a charm. I can't seem to find Support Tools for Windows 7, and trying to use the XP tools in compatibility mode doesn't work (I tried, it fails to open a receiving socket). I need a tool to monitor DHCP traffic, and ideally one that lets me filter it to exclude DHCP traffic from our trusted DHCP servers and only show me un-authorised DHCP traffic.

• How much RAM on a windows VPS (2003, 2008, 2008R2)

  Right now I'm running Windows Server 2003 on a VPS with 640mb RAM and it works fine. I would like to upgrade OS to Windows Web Server 2008 or Windows Web Server 2008 R2. I understand that it is difficult to say how much RAM is needed, but can you make a comparison between 2003 and the two new 2008 versions? RAM on VPS is by far the most expensive item, so I wonder if I can get similar performances with 1GB and 2008 or 2008R2 compared to 640MB and 2003. Basically I run IIS, SQL Server and MailEnable.

• ForceAutoLogon Ignored in windows 7 when setting up Autologin - Autologon

  I am attempting to setup automatic logon for a windows 7 kiosk computer via the registry. I have set the values under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon like this: AutoAdminLogon = 1 ForceAutoLogon = 1 DisableCAD = 1 I have filled out the username and password fields. I have also deleted all EULA related values (a prerequisite of ForceAutoLogon) I have done this procedure on 2 computers. On computer A: When rebooting, we logon automatically. When logging out from the start menu, we logon automatically immediately after logging out. On computer B: When rebooting, we logon automatically. When logging out from the start menu, we are presented with a logon menu where the user needs to click a user name & then enter a password. It seems like the value of ForceAutoLogon requires some other prerequisite that is met on computer A, but not on computer B. What do I need to make computer B act like computer A when clicking the log off button from the windows start menu?

  I want to install the administration tools on a Windows Server 2008 (R1) machine. On Windows 2003 you installed adminpak.msi, but I can't find such a file for 2008. Is this a "feature" in Server Manager? If so what is it named? ---UPDATE--- So I drilled into the server Features list and I have "Remote Server Administration Tools" but it only includes File Services, Print Services and Web Server. This is a member server in a domain but not a domain controller. It is Windows 2008 (original) not R2. Still, why can't it run AD users and computers from this machine?

• Windows Advanced Firewall certificate based IPSEC

  I'm working on migrating from using IPSEC settings stored under the 'IP Security Policies on Active Directory' to using the 'Windows Firewall with Advanced Security' for my 2008+ boxes. I have successfully been able to get this set up using Kerberos authentication, however my openswan implementation on my Linux boxes is using certificates. Whenever I try changing the authentication method to computer certificate (using RSA and my root CA) the connection is bombing out. I've made this change at both a connection request policy and on the IPSEC settings on the root Windows Firewall with Advanced Security node. The windows event log shows the authentication request is taking place but failing negotiating a mode. What am I missing here?

• Dell Latitude E6420 dual-boot Ubuntu + Windows 7 Optimus graphics problems

  I have a Dell Latitude E6420 laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7 (dual-boot) docked in a docking station with 2 DVI outputs. It took me a week of tinkering to get the dual external monitors to work in Ubuntu, and I had to disabled the "Optimus" feature in the BIOS. But now neither external monitor is detected in Windows, and the resolution is also very low. Do you know how I can successfully dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu on this machine using my 2 external DVI monitors? • Windows 7 - Remote Desktop - multiple credentials

  Hi, My home network consists of a couple XP machines and a windows 7 box. One of the XP boxes is like a shared server accessed via Remote Desktop. I have an account on there and my gf has another. Previously I was able to save RDC shortcuts to this shared server including credentials. So in order to access the server from a computer on the network, i just needed to open the shortcut. I thus would have two shortcuts, one for my account and one for my gf's. In windows 7, it seems to store credentials for a box based on machine name. i.e. i can only store one set of credentials per machine name. This seems incredibly stupid so my question is: In windows 7, is there some way to have RDC shortcuts that use different credentials to login to the same target box? thanks

• Unable to set NTFS permissions for ApplicationPoolIdentity on Windows 2008 SP2

  On Windows 2008 R2 I am able to set NTFS permissions for an application pool's synthesised ApplicationPoolIdentity account thus: ICACLS d:\websites\site1\www /grant "IIS AppPool\site1":(CI)(OI)(M) The website's application pool is named site1 and is configured to run as ApplicationPoolIdentity. The site's authentication is also configured to authenticate as ApplicationPoolIdentity. I've done this a thousand times on Windows 2008 Standard Edition R2 with never a hitch. However if I try to do the same in Windows 2008 Standard Edition SP2 I get the error: IIS AppPool\site1: No mapping between account names and security IDs was done. Successfully processed 0 files; Failed processing 1 files I also notice that this fails if I try to set permissions for the application pool identity via the security GUI as well. I've seen this before and a reboot has cleared this issue but I'd like to know why this happens periodically. Googling around suggests other folks have hit this problem but there's never a satisfactory explanation. Why would this be?

For this reason I would like to get control over what's cached to reduce the risk of cached credentials being used maliciously. It is possible to prevent all caching by zeroing HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\CachedLogonsCount, but this is too indiscriminate: laptops users need to be able to login when away from the network. • Cannot access internet or remote network after connecting to Windows VPN

  I set up a VPN by creating an incoming VPN connection (VPN server) in my Windows 8 machine at home (not a Windows Server). I forwarded the PPTP port in my router (port 1723) to this machine and enabled PPTP passthrough. In a second Windows 8 machine out of home, I created an outgoing VPN connection (VPN client). And I am able to connect to my home VPN, but I don't have access to any home resource or even internet. This is the output of the client ipconfig: And this are the settings of my VPN server: UPDATE: My VPN server has assigned the 192.168.1.144 IP adress at my home network. So, I tried setting the "IP address assignment" range from 192.168.1.150 to 192.168.1.200. And when a VPN client gets connected, it gets an address in that range, but it doesn't make any difference.

• How can I remove LibUSB on Windows 7?

  I've installed LibUSB, a software that modifies your USB driver so that programs can access it easily. I didn't know that in Windows 7 you have to run it in compatibility mode for Windows XP, so now my Windows 7 can't access any USB port (including keyboard and mouse). Now I can't access my computer at all, and I don't have any PS2 connection in my computer. I tried to run it in Safe Mode but it didn't change anything. I tried to run a system restore from before the installation of LibUSB, but all the restore points give me an error: "The instruction at 0x73888f18 referenced memory at 0x00000004. The memory could not be read." I also tried to run Hiren's Boot CD and remove all the files associated with LibUSB, but that didn't change anything. So how can I remove LibUSB and access my computer again without formatting my hard drive? (I have important things on it)

  I am considering using Apache 32-bit for a Moodle installation on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit/16GB server. Since the available memory affects the number of concurrent of users that can be served, I was wondering how the 2GB memory limit on 32-bit Windows processes affects Apache+PHP. Is it a collective limit for the whole server, or is it applied separately for each Apache child process/thread? If it is separate, how many of those children are launched on Windows? One per request? One per processor core? Something in the middle? Is this somehow configurable?

• Prevent Windows 7 from installing a "critical" updates that crashes the system

  I am running Windows 7 home premium. Up until yesterday, everything was going just beautifully, until I received a "critical update". As soon as the critical update was installed, the system became extremely unstable and froze up every few minutes requiring me to restart the system several times, with the same results. I used system restore to roll back the * update, and everything went back to normal... except that I keep getting a message telling me to restart the computer so that it can install this "critical update". There is no "don't install that crap on my machine" option. Disabling the updates doesn't change anything, turning off the windows update service doesn't change anything either, and being on Home premium, I have no access to the group policies. Any ideas of what can be done to prevent Windows from installing this update the next time I reboot?

• Is Windows Server 2003 on 96 MB possible?

  I have an old laptop, a Pentium II with 96 MB. I have had Windows 2000 on it for ages, it was slow but usable. But now I have to upgrade since I can't get my USB-wlan drivers to install (the old PCMCIA network card broke). I would prefer to install Windows XP but I have no spare licence, but I do have a Windows Server 2003 licence. Do you think it's possible (and usable) to squeeze in 2003 on this computer? Edit: Unfortunately 2003 simply refuses to install on the laptop. It hangs with an error message (paraphrased) 2003 has detected a problem with your computer and has halted the installation to prevent damage. And then some error codes This happens very early in the installation while it's copying the installation files just after I accepted the licence. So I give up for now.

• Multicasting Windows 7 Image

  I am trying to deploy some new machines with windows 7 for the first time in our computer labs. We used to use third party imaging software and then run sysprep after the image was copied(XP), but it seems you can't go that route with windows 7. We set up a new imaging server with the windows system image manager, but when we try to multicast the image it pretty much takes down our whole staff and faculty network. I heard you can turn on a multicast feature on our cisco switches to help with the issue, but that it also slows the switches to a crawl. Another idea we have tried was pulling the the computer lab switch off the main network and plugging the imaging server directly into the computer lab switch so the multicast doesn't take down our network, but it doesn't seem to work without being able to hit a domain controller. Is there a way to multicast without taking out the network? I feel like I am missing something... Thanks in advance

• Best technique for reusing a Windows system image across configurations

  We are a small company that provides solutions for ventilation systems. Part of the solution is a "controller" which communicates with the ventilation equipment. These controllers are simply Dell computers that come with our Windows 7 system image on them and sometimes some special hardware. We typically do a batch of 10 controllers at a time. We have been using Norton Ghost to apply the system image, but this process breaks because Dell changes the system configuration often, and our Windows image now does not contain the correct drivers. This is especially a problem when they change the RAID controller. To improve this, I see 2 options: use some kind of virtualization and install a hypervisor on each PC. This would solve the driver problem, but probably cause trouble with our special hardware. use some method of adding the proper drivers to our Windows image in offline mode. I haven't got much experience in either of these approaches. How would you solve our problem?

  Does anyone out their have rough (I don't need exact) pricing for Symantec (used to be Veritas) Storage Foundation for Windows? Its for Windows Server 2008 R2. Ideally, I would love to know the cost of Storange Foundation For Windows, and also the price of the options (like VRR, HA etc. ) if you happen to know them. Getting the information out of a reseller is like pulling teeth. They want to meet with us and discuss our needs etc. My needs are just to know whether its $100, $500, $1,000 or $10,000 per server in small qtys (i.e. less than 20 licences). Arghh. Anyone know the rough prices?

  I'm managing my very small office server with windows server 2008. since I have only one server, and the user group is really small. I made the first hdd into 2 partitions. one (C:) for windows and Active directory, another (D:) for tomcat and database. I'm doing incremental back C: and D: daily to hdd2 (E:) using windows server backup. is it enough to let me do fully restore my server in case of disaster? I ask this because I have read there is also a system state backup, and I also have to do that periodically in order to get AD back? isn't it with incremental/full backup I can do full bare-metal recovery?

  I use msysgit on Windows to use git, but I often want to navigate through a Windows-style *.lnk shortcut. I typically manage my file structure through Windows' explorer, so using a different type of shortcut (such as creating hard or soft link in git) isn't feasible. How would I navigate through this type of shortcut? • Windows 7 keeps losing drive letters

  Windows 7 loses its drive letters and I have to keep manually assigning a drive letter everytime I plug in a hard drive, whether it's internal or external. The only way to get around it is to reinstall Windows 7 but the problem will come back after a few months. We are a PC repair company and plug in many drives during the say and it can be very frustrating having to keep assigning a drive letter every time a drive is plugged in. Windows Updates are turned off so it can't be that. Any reason why this would have happened?
