• Confused about nova-network

  I'm so sorry because this question doesn't related to Ubuntu. I asked in Openstack forum but this forum is not very active. So I think if someone have experience with Openstack Nova can help me with my problem. I've read some explanations about nova-network and how to configure it like this one from wiki: http://wiki.openstack.org/UnderstandingFlatNetworking I'm confusing about a detail. If every traffic from the instances must go through nova controller node, then why we still need the public interface for nova-compute node? Is it necessary? What happen when a request from outside to an instance. For example I have a controller node and a nova-compute node. In nova-compute node I run an instance with a Wordpress website. Then someone connect to the public IP of this instance. So the request go directly from router to the nova-compute node or from router to controller node then nova-compute node? Thank you!

• Images not indexed by google since moving to cdn

  Last week I moved all the images on coffeeandvanilla.com to a cdn( maxcdn.coffeeandvanilla.com ). The problem I'm having is that although the sitemap—generated by yoast wordpress seo plugin—points images to the correct location, google only indexes[sic] images from the category and page site maps but 0 images from the posts sitemap( see screenshot https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4635252/sitemap.png ) This website has been doing quite well with google image-search before the change, visits from google image search have dropped from ~200/day to 11 yesterday Here is an example entry from the generated posts.xml sitemap http://pastebin.com/vcMRf9VW Can anyone suggest where the problem lies? Why have I lost all my google image juice? Should I just wait some more, how long before really worrying?

• remove ssl from Google search results

  I am the webadmin of a WordPress site that serves up http pages statically. The problem is that some of the pages are shown as https in Google search results. For instance, if the search term "Example Press Kit" is entered the search result site link comes up as: https://example.com/presskit/ We don't have a site ssl certificate, so surfers are being bounced. I have tried everything. Most recently I created a new website in Google WebAdmin for the https version of our home page. Then, I added sitelinks that should have redirected site links intended for https://example.com/* to http://example.com/*. But it doesn't work! Google still shows a dead link to http://example.com/presskit. I didn't think dead links lasted very long on Google results, but there they are, two weeks later. Any ideas?

• problem with template: negative margins on float

  hi, i'm having a very strange problem with the wordpress template. i'd like to place 2 divs besides each other like this: <div style='float:left;'> left div </div> <div style='float:right'> right div </div> normally this works as it should - both divs should stick directly to each other - but something in the style.css (which uses css reset) causes the right div to overlap the left div with ~ 5pixels. i searched the whole .css for it but couldn't find out :(( it's just a fact that it must be something with the default css. anyone knows what is causing this - some fix? thanks

• How can I stop a bot attack on my site?

  I have a site (built with wordpress) that is currently under a bot attack (as best I can tell). A file is being requested over and over, and the referrer is (almost every time) turkyoutube.org/player/player.swf. The file being requested is deep within my theme files, and is always followed by "?v=" and a long string (i.e. r.php?v=Wby02FlVyms&title=izlesen.tk_Wby02FlVyms&toke). I've tried setting an .htaccess rule for that referrer, which seems to work, except that now my 404 page is being loaded over and over, which is still using lots of bandwidth. Is there a way to create an .htaccess rule that requires no bandwidth usage on my part? I also tried creating a robots.txt file, but the attack seems to be ignoring that. #This is the relevant part of the .htaccess file: RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} turkyoutube\.org [NC] RewriteRule .* - [F]

  I use to work for a major internet company that sold Dental Plans to customers through their large customer-driven websiteto consumers. They start tracking their users as soon as they hit their web servers, and then they log everything they can about the user. There are a lot of benefits for using session tracking for both the user and the website. Users can benefit from session tracking due to the fact that a website can retain pertaining information for the user so that they do not have to re-enter the same information repeatedly. In addition, websites can hold specific items in a cart for each user so that they can pay for all of their  items at once when they are ready to complete their purchases. Websites can also benefit from session tracking because they can determine where a specific user came from and which advertising partner gave them a sale. This information is very useful when deciding on where to spend an advertising budget. There is only one real disadvantage when it comes to session tracking, Users can not really control what is actually tracked by a website. Yes, they can disable cookies and this will help, but that means that no tracking can be done at all. Most sites require users to have cookies enabled in order for users to make purchases or login to their accounts.

• Is it a good practice to use branches to maintain different editions of the same software?

  We have a product that has a few different editions. The differences are minor: different strings here and there, very little additional logic in one, very little difference in logic in the other. When the software is being developed, most changes need to be added to each edition; however, there are a few that don't and a few that needs to differ. Is it a valid use of branches if I have release-editionA and release-editionB (..etc) branches? Are there any gotchas? Good practices? Update: Thanks for the insight everyone, lots of good answers here. The general consensus seems to be that it is a bad idea to use branches for this purpose. For anyone wondering, my final solution to the problem is to externalize strings as configuration, and externalize the differing logic as plugins or scripts.

  I need to add photo-blog to a site that I'm recently working on. It is very simple site so the blog doesn't have to be very sophisticated. What I need is: a CMS that allows me to create simple blog-like news with one (or more) images at the beginning and some description/comment below. Preferably, I would like to create something that works like sites like these two: http://www.photoblog.com/dreamie or http://www.photoblog.pl/mending/ it must be customizable. I want to integrate it's look as much as possible with current page: http://saviorforest.tk preferably, it should provide some mechanizm for uploading and storing images at the server. I thought about wordpress, but it seems to be a little bit too complicated for such simple task. Do you know any simple and easy in use CMS that would work here?

• webhost4life, please give me, my data back. My website will not work without the database.

  I have about 4 or 5 accounts with WebHost4life.com, these are all my customers that based on my recommendation have been hosting with webhost4life.com. A few days ago for some reason they decided to migrate one of these accounts to a new server. They moved everything created a new database on the new server but the new database is empty. after spending hours with Tech support they acknowledged the problem and assured me it will take up to an hour or two and my database will be populated with the data. this was about 7 hours ago. Oh by the way I pay extra for the backup plan and yes you guessed it, none of my backups are there. Needless to say I’m very scared and disappointed. No one is responding to my emails  or phone calls. After searching the web, I found out, this has happened before, in some cases it took them days to fix the problem and many never got it resolved and switched hosting companies, I would love to do that but I need my 2 GB database before I start shopping around for a new hosting company. Stay away from Webhost4life.

  Does anybody know of a CMS where users can edit their own page, and their page only (something similar to about.me, except with more customization/options)? I'm not talking about profiles, but more like an individual web page for people's businesses. I want to be able to give local businesses the opportunity to make a single web page for their businesses with ease. I have looked at many CMS's, but I can't find anything that offers this type of functionality. I've check out the following: Unify Concrete 5 Drupal Simple CMS CMS Made Simple (and more) If anybody knows a CMS with the functionality that I'm looking for, or even a regular CMS with modules/plugins that I would be able to use, that would be awesome.   Is curl something that's not expected to be installed on servers? I'm working for a small development shop and 99% of the problems that I'm having is regarding curl. Most of the projects that I'm working on involves calling a web API. Most web API's suggests using curl by default since you have to pass in a POST data in the request. Every time I complain to my senior that the server that I'm working on doesn't have curl installed the excuse that I'm always getting is that curl is not needed you can always use file_get_contents. So the question: is curl something that's not expected to be installed on servers that runs PHP, should I always develop using file_get_contents and not curl? Are there any advantages of using file_get_contents over curl or vise versa? If it helps, the context here is wordpress plugins, shopify apps, drupal modules and other bits of code that a lot of people can install.

• Ubuntu 12.04 version of Netbeans doesn't have the JavaFX plugin

  I just want to know why does Netbeans 7.0.1 from the official Ubuntu 12.04 doesn't have all the plugins (in especial the JavaFX plugin) on it while the official Netbeans from the website (even the version with the less plugin), has it by default ? And how can we change that ? Because I love Ubuntu (even if it is extremly slow on my Asus 1215N (it is the only OS that is slow on it, but that's not very important), but I am trying to use it only with the software provided by the Original repositories without having to download manually or even use any PPA. • Which social sign-in (Google, twitter, fb, etc) is most often used (if I could only choose one, which would statistically retain the most users)?

  I am working with a startup which is about to do it's launch in maybe 2-3 weeks. In order to see the primary features of the site, the user has to register or sign in if they have already registered. We quickly decided we wanted to incorporate social plugins as alternatives to a conventional sign up, just like stackexchange does. But seeing that we are strapped for time and fairly amateur developers, I'm trying to justify just choosing one or two social sign-ins to start with for the launch and then maybe add more later. Based on my experience as a user, I'm guessing that twitter and google (in no particular order of importance) would probably be the most important social sign-ins in order to retain as many users as possible, but have absolutely no statistics to back that up other than my own anecdotal experience. This question hasn't been visibly asked on the internet, so I figured I'd hop on stackexchange and give it a punt. Thanks.

• Usual Suspects: Typical 3rd Party Entities in E-Commerce [closed]

  I am doing some requirements/analysis for a web app that I'd like to build (Ruby/Java developer here). This web app would have a store front, shopping cart and would need to be totally compliant with all e-com best practices. It's amazing how much non-technical info comes up when you search for phrases like "how does e-commerce work", but very little comes up in the way of technical details. As such, I'm having extreme frustration finding answers to what I consider pretty straight-forward questions. I came here because I believe this question is not off-topic; if it is, please leave a comment as to why this question does not belong here and I will happily remove it myself (upvotes if your comment can point me to the correct place for this question!). So then: What 3rd parties will I need to work with to have a modern, web-compliant e-com site? So far I can account for a payment gateway provider like Authorize.net and an SSL certificate provider like Trustwave. Any others? What other standards besides PCI compliance will I be held to (besides governing laws, of course!)? Vulnerability scans: PCI compliance requires quarterly scans: if I'm a "Level 4" (low volume) Merchant does that still apply to me? Irregardless, my backend architecture is quite huge, with web servers, app servers, database, message brokers and more. Do each of these servers need to be scanned?!? If not what servers do need to get these quarterly scans? I usually hate to ask micro-questions inside of one large one, but these are so closely-related I just felt like asking them all separately would be spamming the site with too many petty questions. However, is there a way to use juju with lxc in a non-local environment? I am looking at a scenario where lxc containers are deployed on multiple nodes. I.e., lets say I have virtual machines m1 and m2 with wordpress deployed on a container in m1 and mysql deployed on a container in m2. Is there a way to orchestrate these deployments with juju?

• Plug-in or framework recommendation for showing content preview fly-over in CMS

  The requirement is to have either front end plug-in or back end processor that generates the preview of contents (such as images, videos, PDF files, HTML pages) in a preview popup when user mouse hovers the content. I did some research on this, seems that there are assorted jquery plugins for each type of files, but what we are looking for is a framework that handles all types of file previews. Ideally, we want to generate preview images on the backend, considering the cost of retrieving content on front end. I did find some open source or proprietary CMS that provides this feature, but usually they are shipped as one suite and the API for file preview might not be open. Is there any java or jquery framework that handles file preview? Thanks a lot

• Is there any good reason I would want my website to be framed?

  I'm building a website that's not security-critical in any way at all, so having somebody put a page in an <iframe> is not particularly dangerous to its users. However, as my website doesn't have script plugins that will be used anywhere else, is there any reason why I shouldn't just apply: X-Frame-Options: Deny to every page on my website? Is there any valid reason for any other website to embed mine? I've seen plenty of content-stealing ones and attempts to hijack user accounts, but never an actual good usage of frames that's not an explicit feature of the website.

• Why won't videos on a particular website play under Ubuntu 13.04?

  Very oddly, I cannot watch any videos a TV channel website, for example this one: http://www.kanald.com.tr/GalipDervis/Videolar/ I can see from the frame source that it contains an embedded Adobe Flash video and some Java scripts (all of which don't pose any problems elsewhere). I've tried different web browsers (Chrome/Chromium/Firefox), but it seems I have some sort of video codec problem in my system. I have installed all sorts of gstreamer plugins, codecs, etc. (maybe too many?) to avoid such problems, but strangely I can watch these videos using Linux Mint 15 Live Session on the same machine. I wonder how I can find out why a particular video (like this one) won't work on my system?
