• .NET Build Process

  All I am looking for the best free set of tools to be used in a MS Based build process. Checkout, Build, Package, Test, Deploy, etc. I know this question has been asked before but it was over 2 years ago, and in our world that is an eternity. I am looking to develop a pattern that is easily adapted to similar projects. Almost like a template/cookie cutter system. I am currently looking into using CruiseControl, Powershell, MSBuild suite of tools. If we choose to move to 4.0 will we have issues? Are there better alternatives? Limitations ? Or will these pretty much meet my needs. One piece that i am never happy with is the process of packaging. We actually have opted in the past to just use Visual Studio Deployment Projects but those are very* ancient and my fear is WIX will be too complicated for the people implementing it.

• Career advice: I am best at what I hate most

  I think my career has entered a vicious circle which I would like to exit: I am best at what I hate most. And because I am good at that, I always receive that kind of assignments, and I do them as expected or even better. Which makes me more of an expert and brings me more similar tasks. My "expertise" is what (I think) every programmer hates: legacy systems. I can very quickly learn systems, and modify them, migrate them, extract web services from them whatever (without breaking them). Never to develop more functionality or to solve interesting or original problems. Just have that work with Java 1.4, or convert it into a rest-full service or support oracle too. I feel (and I am told) that I am highly regarded and very helpful to my company. But I hate what I do. What would you do in my place?

• Client side caching in GWT

  We have a gwt-client, which recieves quite a lot of data from our servers. Logically, i want to cache the data on the client side, sparing the server from unnecessary requests. As of today i have let it up to my models to handle the caching of data, which doesn't scale very well. It's also become a problem since different developers in our team develop their own "caching" functionality, which floods the project with duplications. I'm thinking about how one could implement a "single point of entry", that handles all the caching, leaving the models clueless about how the caching is handled. Does anyone have any experience with client side caching in GWT? Is there a standard approach that can be implemented?

It looks like D7 slower, have bigger memory consumption and also have a lack of documentation by the moment. I don't need new CCK, Views and other - looks like I'll coding all features needed as modules. Is D7 have sweet parts now, or better way is develop project under D6?   Hello there. I am going to develop a Tic-Tac-Toe game using Java(or maybe other OO Languages).Now I have a picture in my mind about the general design. Interface: Player ,then I will be able to implement a couple of Player classes,based on how I want the opponent to be,for example,random player,intelligent player. Classes: Board class,with a two-dimensional array of integers,0 indicates open,1 indicates me,-1 indicates opponent.The evaluation function will be in here as well,to return the next best move based on the current board arrangement and whose turn it is. Refree class,which will create instance of the Board and two player instances,then get the game begin. This is a rough idea of my OO design,could anybody give me any critiques please,I find this is really beneficial,thank you very much.

• Avoiding .NET versioning hell

  So sometimes (oftentimes!) you want to target a specific .NET version (say 3.0), but then due to some .NET service packs you get into problems like: Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(Delegate, Object[]) <-- this was added in 3.0 SP2 (3.0.30618 ) System.Threading.WaitHandle.WaitOne(Int32) <-- this was added in 3.5 SP1, 3.0 SP2, 2.0 SP2 Now, these are detected by the JIT compiler, so building against .NET 3.0 in Visual Studio won't guarante it will run on .NET 3.0 only systems. Short of confirming each and every function you use, or limiting your development environment to .NET 3.0 (which sucks since you have to develop for other projects too) what's the best way to avoid against using extensions?   Hi folks, Got a problem I need help with. Basically I'm gonna develop a form (part of a bigger web app) that lists a load of clients and there business contact, tech contact 1, and tech contact 2. The idea is rapid data entry. So one form shows each client with their contacts in dropdowns and I we can change each one then click a save button to do a mass save. the database looks like this: tblClient ClientID ClientName BusinessContact Tech1 Tech2 My idea was to use a repeater to format the data like this: Client Business Contact Tech1 Tech2 Client2 Business Contact Tech1 Tech2 What I'm stuck on is how to do the mass update? • Game cross-compiling and packaging

  Hi, Some friends and I wanted to develop a game. Any language will do. I've been programming in C for years, but never wrote a game before. One of us knows SDL a little bit. It would also be a nice excuse to learn Python+pygame. We wish our game to be 'standalone'. By standalone, I mean most users (at least Linux, Mac and Windows) will not have to manually download and install anything else apart from a package. It is ok if the installation automatically handles missing dependencies. If the packages contain binaries, we wish to be able to generate them using cross-compilation from Linux. How should we package and structure the project, and what language is best suited?

• Win CE 6.0 client using WCF Services

  We have a Win CE 6.0 device that is required to consume services that will be provided using WCF. We are attempting to reduce bandwidth usage as much as possible and with a simple test we have found that using UDP instead of HTTP saved significant data usage. I understand there are limitations regarding WCF on .NET Compact Framework 3.5 devices and was curious what people thought would be the appropriate way forward. Would it make sense to develop a custom UDP binding, and would that work for both sides? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

  I have Visual Studio 2010 installed on my Windows XP development machine along with Office 2007 Professional and Office 2010 Professional. I am trying to develop several add-ins for Office 2007; however, I prefer to use Office 2010 on a day-to-day basis. How do I set Visual Studio 2010 to install the add-in and open Word 2007 when I press debug? Currently, Word 2010 opens, but does not recognize the add-in. Unless I have to, I would like to keep Office 2010 installed.

  I might be wrong on this, but I no longer see heavy Business and Web services being hosted using J2ee technologies (Especially EJBs). Having known the power and scalability of J2ee applications, what is keeping developers/decision makers to restrict themselves to Core Java (POJOs) or even other web technologies like PHP, python. Is it the development time? Is it the Ease of configuration? (I feel this should not be a strong reason with Java EE 6, things are simplified) Of course scripting languages are faster to develop, we cannot ignore the fact that they are inherently not-as-scalable as Java Applications are (using App servers)

• issues with horizontal scrolling using jQuery.ScrollTo / jQuery.SerialScroll

  Hi, I am trying to develop auto horizontal scrolling for our website using - jQuery.ScrollTo / jQuery.SerialScroll. I am not sure if this is the best jquery library to do that, but if there's something better, please let me know. Here's the behavior that I want, check out foursquare's "Recent Activity" list. The data that will refresh will come from a ajax request that I make every few seconds using window.setInterval. I am not really a CSS/java script guy so I havent been able to figure out jQuery.SerialScroll. Here's the website - look at the "Live job Feeds" list. Currently the list does refresh the data coming from the ajax call, but I dont see the effect, the animation, in fact I dont even think serialScroll is being used. Right now I am doing a - $('#feed-ticker').prepend(content) to pre-append the newly arrived data. You can do a view source to look at the current code. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

  I develop a couple of open source projects licensed under MPL1.1. All projects depend on a lot of other open source tools. I avoid any GPL licensed libraries for the viral nature of GPL. The licenses of the libraries my tools depend on are Apache2, LGPL2, LGPL3, CPL, BSD, JSON, MIT and some personal agreements. My applications are licensed under MPL1.1 but now I want to publish some libraries. Which license is compatible with all of the above ? comfortable for the user ? My suspicion is that MPL1.1 is not that good as a library license. I'd like the libraries to be used.

  Hello, Besides using Appcelerator's Titanium Desktop, are there other approaches to integrating Javascript and Ruby/Python into cross-platform desktop applications? Just trying to get a sense of the landscape here. From searching the web, it seems Titanium may be leading the charge in terms of this type of integration. I wasn't able to find references that suggest you can do something similar in Adobe AIR. I am interested in building desktop applications that exploit Protovis and possibly other Javascript interactive vis packages for the UI. At the end of the day, I can go the web app route if need be, but being able to develop desktop apps is helpful. Would appreciate your perspective on this... Chris

  hi guyz; i am using netbeans6.7.1 and phpmyadmin for my db to develop a java application to manage students records i want to upload students photos through browsing by clicking a browse buton which i have included in my interface I mean when i click on that button a JFilechooser pops up which filter only images(i have acomplished this) 1.) what i need is when i click on the "Attach button" of the JFilechooser, i want the image i chose to be attached to a jtextArea on the form i'm working with and the JFilechooser be diposed off. 2.)   Hi I have a requirement to develop custom reports where we already have some reoprts developed using JasperReports using iReport tool. Now the requirement is to modify those reports design at run time. I should use those existing jrxml files and save as to new report then change the design at run time. Also I should see those newly created reports whenever I want. I have gone through the Jasper API and Dynamic Reports where we can create the reports dynamically at run time but we can't save the design (like JRXML). I am looking for any other JRXML design API to create and modify and save the Jasper Reports at run time. I appreciate if any one can help me. Thanks in Advance Srinivas

• Eclipse: Synchronizing project on Thumbdrive with PC

  I have a thumb drive (memory stick, flash drive, etc.) on which I use for my projects when I am away from my home PC. Currently I am accessing my Eclipse project directly from my thumb drive when connected to my PC. I would like to copy my files to the PC, develop on the PC, then "synchronize" with the thumb drive (update files on the thumb drive). I also need the reverse process too: synchronize thumb drive files with files on PC. I have looked at the FileSync plugin, but it specifically says it is one-way. How can I synchronize my Eclipse project both directions (PC to thumb drive and thumb drive to PC) on demand (I don't need this done automagically)?

  Is it possible to develop Silverlight apps to run on WinMo devices? I see all around searching on the web - in articles from 2008 and 2009 - that they were adding Silverlight support in WinMo 6.1, for example: Internet Explorer Mobile The new version of Internet Explorer Mobile adds the ability to easily view full-screen Web pages and multimedia on the Web with a smartphone. Microsoft's press release states the new version takes advantage of "Internet Explorer 6 technologies" and supports industry standards such as H.264, Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight. The update will be available to mobile phone partners in the third quarter of 2008, with the first Windows Mobile phones using the new version expected to be available by the end of 2008. But I have found an SL app supposedly geared for mobile devices (as much as I hate weatherbug), but when i try going there in PIE on my WinMo 6.1 device, it shows me the little "get silverlight" image button, but clicking it doesn't do anything. So, what is the story? Is SL/WinMo development possible, or ?

• Maintain set of local commits working with git-svn

  I am using git to develop against a project hosted in subversion, using git-svn: git svn clone svn://project/ My general workflow has been to repeatedly edit-and-commit on the master branch, then commit to the svn repository via: git stash git svn dcommit git stash apply One of the local modifications that 'stash' command is preserving, that I don't want to commit to the svn repository, is a changed database connection string. What's the most convenient way to keep this local change without the extra 'stash' steps? I suspect that something like 'stash' or 'quilt' is what I'm looking for, but I'm still new enough to git that I think I'm missing some terminology that would lead to the exact incantation. Update: The only solution I found that seems to avoid the git stash + git-svn action + git stash apply series was to update the git-svn ref manually: (check in local-only change to 'master', then...) $ cat .git/refs/master > .git/refs/remote/git-svn $ git svn fetch (with at least one new SVN revision) And that leaves the local-only commit as a weird (probably unsafe) commit between two svn revisions.

• Using XAMPP Install of MySQL with Netbeans 6.8/MySQL Workbench

  All, For all of this I am using Mac OSX Snow Leopard. I have happily used XAMPP to develop PHP backed sites in the past with no problems(as you'd expect for such a simple to set up package). I am now trying to set up this MySQL install in Netbeans 6.8 (for now just trying to get a sample database backed webapp to run). My issue is that even though MySQL has been started I cannot connect to it at 127.0.0.1 on port 3306 (which it is set up to use). I have read that the issue is that XAMPP holds MySQl.sock in /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/... whereas MySQL Workbench and Netbeans expects to find it in /tmp/MySQL.sock. Is this correct? I've tried to set up a symbolic link from /tmp to the xmapp directory but this doesn't appear to have changed anything. Is there anything else I can try/anything that I am missing?

• JAX-WS Consuming web service with WS-Security and WS-Addressing

  I'm trying to develop a standalone Java web service client with JAX-WS (Metro) that uses WS-Security with Username Token Authentication (Password digest, nonces and timestamp) and timestamp verification along with WS-Addressing over SSL. The WSDL I have to work with does not define any security policy information. I have been unable to figure out exactly how to add this header information (the correct way to do so) when the WSDL does not contain this information. Most examples I have found using Metro revolve around using Netbeans to automatically generate this from the WSDL which does not help me at all. I have looked into WSIT, XWSS, etc. without much clarity or direction. JBoss WS Metro looked promising not much luck yet there either. Anyone have experience doing this or have suggestions on how to accomplish this task? Even pointing me in the right direction would be helpful. I am not restricted to a specific technology other than it must be Java based.
