I am using Ubuntu a Dell Inspiron 1545 Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4300 @ 2.10GHz, 4GB Ram, 500GB HDD running Ubuntu 12.04 with gnome-shell 3.4.1.   Do you think it is technically possible to write a fully-fledged 3D MMO client with Browser JavaScript - WebGL for graphics, and WebSocket for Networking? Do you think future MMOs (and games generally) will wrriten with WebGL? Does today's JavaScript performance allow this? Let's say your development team was you as a developer, and another model creator (artist). Would you use a library like SceneJS for the game, or write straight WebGL? If you would use a library, but not SceneJS, please specify which. • Wecam not detected

  after much research ang googling, my web cam is still not recognized. In the time of Ubuntu 11.04 it was working fine. I did a fresh install of 11.10 and not more web cam. All the cheese and camera monotor and V4L tests and all failes with "cannot connect to /dev/video0" or equivalent. The output of 'lsusb' shows the webcam Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05a9:2640 OmniVision Technologies, Inc. OV2640 Webcam What I noticed is that neither /dev/v4l nor /dev/video* exists. If I re-install the v4l package all the /dev/video* are created, but no /dev/v4l If I reboot the /dev/video* are NOT created. I think the trouble is that the device are not created at boot time. I have a DELL Inspiron 1525 and until this fresh install the web cam worked fine. Can somebody help ? Thanks a lot Richard

• Cheese with vaapi

  Hi, I am using a Dell Inspiron Mini 10 with GMA500 video drivers. GMA500 fixes resolution issues and enables video acceleration. The only problem with the GMA500 drivers I am having is that I can not find a fix for the webcam program called cheese, and I can't find a way to enable the vaapi (Video Acceleration API) backend. Videos don't work with the GMA500 (without vaapi) and I cannot properly use cheese. If anyone can help me out with this I will be grateful because Google isn't helping me much with this problem.

• [Windows 8] Please implement the PlayTo feature in your media apps

  One of the greatest feature in Windows 8 apps is the ability to stream the video/photos/music you’re playing to any DLNA capable device in your network. Meaning that if you’re watching a movie on Netflix on your brand new Surface tablet in your garden, you can continue to watch it without interruption on your TV if you decide to go back inside ! Isn’t that awesome? The best thing is that it takes very few lines to implement that in an app and it’s very easy. You just have to subscribe to one event and feed the EventArgs with the stream you want to display. You can either stream a video/music from a MediaElement/MediaPlayer (see PlayerFramework on CodePlex) or from a simple Image control. Code’s better than text so I invite you to go the sample code of the PlayTo feature on the msdn (it features code for JS, C# and C++). So if you’re developing an app capable of playing video, music or just display some photos, please implement the PlayTo, it will bring a plus to your app.

  I had reason to meet up with someone I don't see very often a bit ago. In the course of the conversation, he told me he bought an iPad. I don't know if I was expected to ooh and ahh, but I didn't. After he finished saying how cool it was and how much he and his wife liked it, I commented "no Flash and no Silverlight" after which followed this: Him: "You don't need it, HTML5 can do everything Flash and Silverlight does" Me: "Wait... you're telling me that the iPad converts existing Flash content into HTML5 and then renders it?" Him: "No, but once all the existing sites are converted to HTML 5 it'll be fine and we don't need Flash... or Silverlight" 'all the existing sites' ... huh ... I didn't get a notice, maybe they're doing them alphabetically or something :) Ok Spanky... you keep drinking that Kool-Aide from Steve, I've got mine... it's blue with Silverlight:

• Which is better jplayer or jwplayer?

  I need to make a video slideshow( slides to contain embedded video players and must play mp4 files), and I am kind of confused what would be the best free solution I can use? jplayer and jwplayer both seem good, but I can't find any comparisons between them, so I want some expert opinions and user experiences on these two. Also if there are any other free and open source solutions you can recommend, i am all ears ;) My requirements are: The player must be html5 with fallback to flash. Should support mp4 files as well as flv. Should also have the ability to double as an audio player(mp3) along with video capabilities. Should be lightweight and customizable easily in terms of looks.

• Firefox, Chrome, and Flash on Ubuntu

  Ok I have recently run into some problems and was hoping you guys could help; 1) On Chrome sometimes when I play a video (even on Youtube) the audio won't work (yet other apps audio will work) but after pressing the play button (pausing and unpausing the video) it finally works but if I pause the video and click play it goes back to not working until I re-do that process. 2) When I go to play videos in firefox or go to grooveshark it says I don't have flash; but I do and when I go to install flash it says I have the LAST version for linux but flash works on Chrome fine (well except the audio problem above which annoys me to no end!)

• Creating a Strong Bridge to the Post PC World

  Moving from location to location requires strong roads.  When crossing a barrier though, like a body of water or valley, we are required to build a strong bridge to get us from point A to point B in a way that is fast, safe, and easy.Yet we are not talking here about driving a car or riding a bus.  As we in the computing world are evidencing the move to the post-PC era, modernizing and migrating legacy applications to harness the power of HTML5 web, cloud and mobile is one of the most difficult challenges enterprises have faced.  Constant technological changes have weakened the business value of legacy systems, which have been developed over the years through huge investments.  There are several risks of course in this move.  Do you choose to simply rewrite code of legacy apps and transform them to HTML5 one by one?  This is quite expensive (according to research firm Gartner, the cost is $6 - $26 per line of code).  Of course, the pace of the rewriting process is very slow – around 170 lines per day for each developer – which slows down business productivity in a world in which no organization can afford to fall behind.  Other questions include whether the new cloud-based apps will have the same functionality as the trusted applications that worked for you for years.  How will the user experience be affected?  And of course, what about data security?  So we are faced with the challenge of building a sturdy bridge to stabilize our move in order to allow us to confidently and easily move our legacy applications into the post-PC era.   We at Gizmox are excited to release the first downloadable Community Technology Preview (CTP) of our Instant CloudMove Transposition Studio.Developers: To download the tool, and try it out for yourself, please visit http://www.visualwebgui.com/download.aspx.The CTP is the first and only tool-based solution allowing any Microsoft Visual Studio developer to extend VB6 and .NET enterprise client/server applications into HTML5 web, cloud and mobile applications, including the ability to upgrade their code and UI while doing so.   It is the only solution to fully replicate enterprise desktop applications behavior in the post-PC era.  With Instant CloudMove, the transposed application is available on any mobile or tablet device, browser and across any client operating system. • What are the fundamentals of game development?

  Hi, I completely do not understand how a video game can be coded. I'm a beginner programmer and only have experience writing console applications that do math and what not. I do not understand how these logical processes can make images move on the screen (video games). Obviously if i jumped into a game development book or something like that I would understand but I am currently still getting a grasp of the fundamentals of programming in general. Could anyone give a simple explanation , coding wise, on the jump between making a computer do simple math to making a computer produce amazing graphical programs such as video games? Maybe there are some intro videos someone can point me to? I

• Will learning ColdFusion help me advance my programming skills? [closed]

  Currently I am working with a small web development company. We use jQuery on front-end, Coldfusion for back-end and MySQL as our database. We just started to use HTML5 and CSS3. This is my first internship and job. I know the basics of Python and want to add Django or Ruby on Rails on my skills set. In addition, I want to advance my programming skills with Machine Learning, Compilers, NoSQL and Unix Hacking. I also find front end web development pretty interesting. Should I focus on front-end and become skilled on HTML5/CSS3/Javascript? Or dive into back-end learning ColdFusion. I will probably leave the company after a year since I want to work with great product start-ups. And I live in India, where ColdFusion is not popular. Will learning ColdFusion help me become better programmer?
