  Hello everyone, I am reading the book -- Hadoop: The Definitive Guide, http://www.amazon.com/Hadoop-Definitive-Guide-Tom-White/dp/0596521979/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1273932107&sr=8-1 In chapter 2 (Page 25), it is mentioned "The new API favors abstract class over interfaces, since these are easier to evolve. For example, you can add a method (with a default implementation) to an abstract class without breaking old implementations of the class". What does it mean (especially what means "breaking old implementations of the class")? Appreciate if anyone could show me a sample why from this perspective abstract class is better than interface? thanks in advance, George

  I'm programming in C++. I need to convert a 24-bit signed integer (stored in a 3-byte array) to float (normalizing to [-1.0,1.0]). The platform is MSVC++ on x86 (which means the input is little-endian). • Bitmap in ImageView is cropped off the screen

  I'm working on an Android application that needs to download an image and display it inside an image view. The Bitmap is passed to the main java file and added to the image view like this: comic = (ImageView) findViewById(R.id.comic); comic.setImageBitmap(c.getImageBitmap()); This works, except that the left side of the image disappears off the screen. The ImageView is in a ScrollView and the scroll view maintains the correct size. This means that there is black space to the right in the ScrollView and the image is cut off to the left. The XML for the ImageView is this: <ScrollView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" Any idea why my image is being cut off? Thanks!

• Is it possible to change WCF service without regenerating & recompiling client proxy?

  Let's say I have a WCF service which has a method returning object Person. In one of the clients of this service, I can add service reference to the service and start using its method. Now, let's say the Person class is changed on the server, having a new DataMember added. Other clients will make use of this new DataMember, but my client doesn't. Therefore, this client shouldn't even be aware that the service returns s/t "more" than what it needs. Is there any way that my client can still work with the service without having to update the service reference (which, as I understand, means regenerating the proxy & compiling it)?

• Redirecting the response from a filter throws an IllegalStateException

  I am writing a filter that will handle all authentication related tasks. • XSS exploit when JavaScript is disabled

  I'm getting pretty frustrated trying to make McAffee whitelist a supposed exploit on a site i work on. The issue is that their automated system has detected a supposed XSS exploit but the exploit only exists when JavaScript is disabled. Given the fact that you need JavaScript to be disabled for the exploit to exist then surely this means this is not an exploit. Can anyone think of any possible arguments to the contrary? Update - To add more detail: The problem comes from in one place unsanitized URL content is written to an anchor tag href.So, with JS disabled you could have something like this: <a href="foor.php?"><script>alert('foo')</script>#someanchor" .. When JavaScript is enabled this href is updated to be this (on dom ready): <a href="javascript:;">link</a> So, with JS enabled the link is no longer injected, with JS disabled the alert would no longer execute.

• System.Web.HttpException in asp.net mvc 2 on images and javascript files

  Hi I am getting the following errors reported by ELMAH on my asp.net mvc 2 site for javascript files, images etc. System.Web.HttpException: The remote host closed the connection I have done some research and it appears that the user/bot is clicking a link on the site before the page has fully loaded. Now this error never occurs on a controller action but always on a file that is on disk. e.g. /Content/CmsImages/logo.png /Content/CmsImages/MemberImages/Photo-001605.jpg /Content/jquery.tickertype.js So this means that all static files are being routed through the mvc pipeline. What options do I have?

  Hi, I have a ASP.NET MVC application which is build up as an assembly that queries the database and a asp.net frontend that references this assembly and this assembly abstracts the underlying database. This means that my Assembly contains a app.config file that contains the connectionstring to the database (Linq to Sql data model). How do I go about making this more flexible? Should i make a "initialize()" method somewhere in my assembly which takes the connection string from the asp.net mvc application and then that controls which database to use? or how is this done?

Imagine we want to implement a method which search for all user of a specific group. Which service class is responsible for such a method? I mean, the return value is a user (or maybe a collection of users) but the parameter (which means the name of the group) is a group. • Can I "inherit" a delegate? Looking for ways to combine Moq and MSpec without conflicts around It...

  I have started to use MSpec for BDD, and since long ago I use Moq as my mocking framework. However, they both define It, which means I can't have using Moq and using Machine.Specifications in the same code file without having to specify the namespace explicitly each time I use It. Anyone who's used MSpec knows this isn't really an option. I googled for solutions to this problem, and this blogger mentions having forked MSpec for himself, and implemented paralell support for Given, When, Then. I'd like to do this, but I can't figure out how to declare for example Given without having to go through the entire framework looking for references to Establish, and changing code there to match that I want either to be OK. For reference, the Establish, Because and It are declared in the following way: public delegate void Establish(); public delegate void Because(); public delegate void It(); What I need is to somehow declare Given, so that everywhere the code looks for an Establish, Given is also OK.

• How can I make an expect script prompt for a password?

  I have an expect script that connects to a few routers through ssh. All these routers have the same password (I know, it's wrong), and the script needs to know that password in order to be able to connect to the routers. Currently, the password is passed to my script as an argument on the command line, but this means that there's a trace of that password in my .bash_history file as well as in the running processes. So instead I would like the user to be prompted for a password, if possible silently. Do you know whether or not it's possible to prompt the user for a password with expect? Thank you. Edit: if I was connecting to servers instead of routers, I would probably use ssh keys instead of passwords. But the routers I'm using just support passwords.

I have a MVC solution which has the following: Data project - C# Services project - C# MVC Web Project - ASP.NET MVC Test Project Currently, I am using the MVC2 source as a means to debug my own code. I do not plan on checking that in, but I realize once I go back to the MVC2 DLL, my solution will change. I'm pretty sure I just shouldn't check in stuff that changes with each build: the bin folder on the Web project, for example. Is there a list of what not to commit to source control? :)

  I have a facebook application that is published at facebook platform and i used facebook API to invite friends and i have succeeded in creating invitation form but the problem is that when u invite friend and send invitation and the invitation request sent to the user and the user accept it this friend appears again in the friend list that can be invited again For example : i have friend in my friend list named X and when i send invitation to him the invitation is sent and and X accept the invitation and when i try to send invitation again the friend X appears again in the list that i can select from to send invitation this means that may i send an invitation to this user (X) and he is already playing the game i need to know how to fix this problem so friends appear in the friend list (for invitation )only friends that not use the application. • Avoiding string copying in Lua

  Say I have a C program which wants to call a very simple Lua function with two strings (let's say two comma separated lists, returning true if the lists intersect at all, false if not). The obvious way to do this is to push them onto the stack with lua_pushstring, which works fine, however, from the doc it looks like lua_pushstring but makes a copy of the string for Lua to work with. That means that to cross over to the Lua function is going to require two string copies which I could avoid by rewriting the Lua function in C. Is there any way to arrange things so that the existing C strings could be reused on the Lua side for the sake of performance (or would the strcpy cost pale into insignificance anyway)? From my investigation so far (my first couple of hours looking seriously at Lua), lite userdata seems like the sort of thing I want, but in the form of a string.

  Hi, I would like to know if it is possible to read $_SESSION attributes without locking it. Currently, session_start() locks SESSION, that means other PHP processes will wait until it is unlocked. But, some processes just want to get some $_SESSION variables, not to write on them. Is that possible to implement some function like session_get(string $id) which doesn't lock SESSION? Also, it is possible to share SESSIONs between browsers, once the user is logged in the same account, for example, using session_id('shared_vars_of_'.$userid). But, is that secure?   My office is about has proposed implementing some extremely strict (I would consider them draconian) policies regarding programmers, and our access due to security concerns (note, we have never had a security breach). While I can theoretically get used to them, I'd like to ask about what is considered good security policy for programmers, specifically in the area of access policies, and what is too much? Any answers to this question are greatly appreciated as they directly relate to my ability to write code, and I can't find anything so far on Google. Edit: Most of the security policies that concern me are about access to my machine and to the code. According to these proposed policies, I'd need management approval to access either, which means that I'd be forced to get management to unlock my computer anytime I leave my desk as my computer is always locked when I'm not at my desk.

• Version control of Mathematica notebooks

  Mathematica notebooks are, of course, plaintext files -- it seems reasonable to expect that they should play nice with a version-control system (git in my case, although I doubt the specific system matters). But the fact is that any .nb file is full of cache information, timestamps, and other assorted metadata. Scads of it. Which means that limited version control is possible -- commits and rollbacks work fine. Merging, though, is a disaster. Mathematica won't open a file with merge markers in it, and a text editor is no way to go through a .nb file. Has anyone had any luck putting a notebook under version control? How?

  I'm using Java Preferences API to store window position and size of Swing application. At this moment, I'm listening to window resize/reposition events and storing the position and size every time they change. However, that means that if user slowly resizes window which is 200px wide to 400px wide, I'll probably write new window size about 200 times during pretty short time. Preferences API uses whichever datastore is available on the host system (windows registry for Windows etc.) - but the question is, what are limitations or best practices for properties API? Is it OK, or would it be smart to write only when user has finished resizing? Anyone had experiences with Properties API on different platforms?

  Hi, I want some help on UIAccelerometer class. I want to find some way to find out or distinguish when I wave iphone device from right-to-left and the left-to-right. I am getting x,y,z values as well as interval value. I am also getting velocity and distance calculated from normal physics rule. Distance = (prevDist + sqrt(pow((prevx - acceleration.x), 2) + pow((prevy - acceleration.y), 2) + pow((prevz - acceleration.z), 2))) Velocity = (Distance * timeintercal) { here distance means newdistance-prevdistance and timeinterval for that distance } When I am moving iphone device right-to-left then left-to-right I am getting total distance traveld in both direction and velocity at regular intervals. Can you help me how I can find out that I am moving iphone device left-to-right or right-to-left? Help would be appreciated. Thanks.
