• raising custom events to allow web user controls to intercommunicate

  Hey , I have 2 web user controls, both inherit the same base class which extends UserControl. I want to raise an event on one and the other should be aware of it. both are on the same page however the 2nd control never handles the custom event i raised on the 1st one ! any ideas ? please just point to an implementation of possible (BTW, i'm googling it since morning but no luck !)

  I often need to enter insert mode just to make changes on a specific line, and would like know if there is a way to enter insert mode in a way that when I am done editing on that line, hitting [Return] gets me back to normal mode. I am aware of the 'r' command for replacing a single character, I guess what I want is something like that but for a line.

  If a JFrame has a JDialog modal open, the JDialog is animated (the borders and title bar have a lighter colour) if any other part of the application is clicked other than the JDialog with focus. The user is made aware of the window in focus to attend to first. I have a Swing application with custom dialogs, setUndecorated(true) and custom title bars. Is it possible to implement the behaviour described above for these custome dialogs?

  How can I put a hard disk drive in stand-by or sleep mode in Windows, in a programmatic manner. Does the Windows API or any .Net libraries provide any functions to achieve this?   I want to write a function that will include an external file, much like Server.Execute, but will pass along parameters. I'm aware that Server.Execute will pass along query parameters, but I'd like to pass data more generally. For instance: ' main.asp MyInclude("external.inc", Array("mykey", "myval")) ' external.inc Response.Write mykey I doubt I can get quite that far without reading the external fine, twiddling it, and executing, but I'd like to get as close as reasonably possible. Also, if possible, I'd prefer avoiding using the query passing option for security reasons.

  Aside from faster development time (Visual Studio 2010 beta 2 has no T4 templates for building POCO entity objects that I'm aware of), are there any advantages to using the traditional EntityObject entities that Entity Framework creates, by default?   Given an Oracle Merge statement with a rejection limit, is there a shorthand way to identify how many rows were rejected, without being forced to query the rejection destination? The rejection destination has records pre-merge, so would currently have to be counted twice and the difference taken, but it seems like there should be a counter exposed, given that it has to be aware of whether it has exceeded the rejection limit.

  I'm curious. Is there any way to prevent SQL query execution plans from being cached for an entire connection's duration? Can I run a command that basically says, "use OPTION(RECOMPILE) for all subsequent commands until I tell you to stop doing so?" I'm acutely aware of all the performance trade-offs here, and I know this is not a step to be taken lightly. However, I'm in a unique situation where this behavior may be advantageous.

• Is there an easy way to compare if 2 XDocuments are equal ignoring element/attribute order?

  Unit testing my serialization code I found one failed because I had attributes listed in a different order (I'm just comparing the XDocument.ToString() values) and while I could fix that, it really doesn't matter to me in what order the elements or attributes appear as long as they're all there with the right name at the right level of hierarchy. I could probably write a method do this, but I'm wondering if there's an easy built in way I'm not aware of.
