• Practical differences between classes and structs in .net (not conceptual)?

  Whenever I tried to search about differences between classes and structs in C# or .net, I ended up with the conceptual overview of the two things like value type or the reference type, where the variables are allocated etc. But I need some practical differences. I have found some like different behavior of assignment operator, having constructors etc. Can anybody provide some more practical differences which will be directly useful while coding? Like the things works with one but not with other or same operation showing different behavior. And some common mistakes regarding these two. Also please suggest where to consider using a struct instead of a class. And where the structs should not be used.

• cannot output a json encoded dict containing accents (noob inside)

Considering the following script: # -*- coding: utf-8 -* from json import dumps as json_dumps machaine = u"une personne émérite" print(machaine) output = {} output[1] = machaine jsonoutput = json_dumps(output) print(jsonoutput) The result of this from cli: une personne émérite {"1": "une personne \u00e9m\u00e9rite"} I don't understand why their such a difference between the two strings. i have been trying all sorts of encode, decode etc but i can't seem to be able to find the right way to do it. • AS3 TextField - unwanted carriage return when setting value to ""

  I have an input TextField and have a KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN even listener on the stage to listen for the Keyboard.ENTER event. The event listener adds the entered text to an array or whatever, and then clears the TextField. The problem is that when the Enter key event fires and the TextField value is set to "", it leaves a carriage return in the TextField and the cursor positioned on the second line. WTF? I've been coding AS2 and AS3 for a LONG time and have never ran into this before. Am I losing my mind? • [Gdata] GetAuthSubToken returns None

  Hey guys, I am a little lost on how to get the auth token. Here is the code I am using on the return from authorizing my app: client = gdata.service.GDataService() gdata.alt.appengine.run_on_appengine(client) sessionToken = gdata.auth.extract_auth_sub_token_from_url(self.request.uri) client.UpgradeToSessionToken(sessionToken) logging.info(client.GetAuthSubToken()) what gets logged is "None" so that does seem right :-( if I use this: temp = client.upgrade_to_session_token(sessionToken) logging.info(dump(temp)) I get this: {'scopes': ['http://www.google.com/calendar/feeds/'], 'auth_header': 'AuthSub token=CNKe7drpFRDzp8uVARjD-s-wAg'} so I can see that I am getting a AuthSub Token and I guess I could just parse that and grab the token but that doesn't seem like the way things should work. • Compatibility issues with <a> and calling a function(); across different web browsers

  Hi, I am new to javascript. I wrote the following function rollDice() to produce 5 random numbers and display them. I use an anchor with click event to call the function. Problem is, in Chrome it won't display, works fine in IE, in firefox the 5 values display and then the original page w/anchor appears! I am suspicious that my script tag is too general but I am really lost. • TypeInitilazationException When Getting an NHibernate Session

  I’ve run into what appears to be an NHibernate config problem. Basically, I ran up a simple proof of concept persistence integration test using NUnit, the test simply querys an Oracle database and successfully returns the last record received by the underlying table. However, when the assemblies are taken out of the NUnit test environment and deployed as they would be for an actual application build, my call for an NHibernate session results in a ‘TypeInitializationException’ whilst executing the code line: sessionFactory = New Configuration().Configure().BuildSessionFactory() The application is a vb.net console app running against an Oracle 9.2 database, using a ‘coding framework’ published on the web by Bill McCafferty entitled 'NHibernate Best Practices with ASP.NET' (pre S#harp Architecture). • SQL "JOIN" vs. "INNER JOIN"?

  I recently came across a query that implements a join using just the "JOIN" keyword. On researching I saw that when using a join in SQL without specifying INNER or OUTER, the default is an INNER JOIN. I've never come across this syntax before; all the SQL I've written/read/worked with specifies INNER or some sort of OUTER (LEFT, RIGHT, FULL...). Is there any reason not to rely on the default? Is the plain JOIN widely used? What are the coding standards regarding JOIN vs. INNER JOIN?

• Share pre-initialized GIT repository

  We were sharing a GIT repository via file-sharing system (smb://) and got it badly corrupted (a power cut meanwhile the post-send :P). Being new to GIT, trying to fix it I made it even worse and I lost all the refs (left with the object folder). Since the incident I haven't had the time to look at the problem and have just been keeping committing to my local clone. So my question is : Is there a way to copy the local repository back to the location of the old repository and make it a shared repository in order to keep some track of previous the history ? That's all I could figure out (I'm still a git-noob), any other solutions are more than welcome ! Thanks in advance !

  I got a Data Access Layer that's being formed by one DBML in which i just include all object I need. Is it necessary to write more functionality in this dbml or can I just use the dbml as my DAL? I ask this because I am currently writing functionality to, for example, get all Articles from a Table in the Business Logic Layer. So I'm kind of lost now.   Today, I found myself coding something like this ... public class LocalEnums { public LocalEnums() { } public void foo() { enum LocalEnum { A,B,C }; // .... // class LocalClass { } } } and I was kind of surprised when the compiler reported an error on the local enum: The member enum LocalEnum cannot be local Why can't enums be declared local like classes? I found this very useful in certain situations. In the case I was working, the rest of the code didn't need to know anything about the enum. Is there any structural/design conflict that explains why this is not possible or could this be a future feature of Java?

• How to sett up hibernate to use Glassfish connection pool?

  I have set up a connection pool in Glassfish with a jndi resource for it also setup. I am stumped on how to configure hibernate to go get it. I have come across alot of write ups to configure it to use C3P0 connection pool. Well I am lost. I found that I need to set: hibernate.connection.datasource hibernate.jndi.url hibernate.jndi.class hibernate.connection.username hibernate.connection.password Would datasource be the same as the hibernate.connection.datasource set in the connection pool? What would hibernate.jndi.class be? Are hibernate.connection.username and hibernate.connection.password for the connection to the database or to the appserver? I assume this is to the database, but why do I need them since that is all set in the appserver?

• UI Controls layer on top of operating system.

  I'm kind of curious about what layer writing a UI platform to the level of Win32 or the X Windowing System would fall in the grand scheme of an operating system. What layers below do they primarily make use of, is it heavily based on direct communication with the graphics card driver (I can't imagine going though a rendering pipeline like OpenGL for this), or is there a graphical platform as part of the operating system which extracts this out a little more. I'm also interested in the creation of shells and the like, and I"m particularly curious as to how people go about creating alternative shells for windows, what do people look for when figuring out what methods to call or what to hook into, etc? I guess I'm fairly lost at these concepts and finding it difficult to find documentation on them. I was initially excited to have taken Operating Systems in college but it was all low level resource management stuff. Thanks all, Mason

• What could cause a button on a UIActionSheet to "miss" on touches?

  I have a UIActionSheet as follows: UIActionSheet *sheet = [[UIActionSheet alloc] initWithTitle:[NSString stringWithFormat: @"Cancel New %@? Changes will be lost.", [creator propertyName]] delegate:self cancelButtonTitle:@"Stay Here" destructiveButtonTitle:@"Discard and Close" otherButtonTitles:@"Save and Close", nil]; [sheet showInView:self.view]; [sheet release]; It creates the action sheet, The buttons display, the Destructive button is on top, cancel button is on the bottom, other button (save and close) shows up in the middle, the top two buttons, (destructive and other) work fine, but the bottom button has a gap, so it is farther down than the other buttons. For some reason though, in order to press the button I need to touch where it would be if there was no gap. Touching the actual button doesn't work. Sorry if this isn't super clear, has anyone encountered something like this? I don't like to whip out the "I found a bug" card too fast, maybe I'm doing something wrong here.

• resolving localhost in php so can be views outside VM

  I'm running Windows 7. Within, I'm running Virtualbox and Ubuntu. Within Ubuntu, I'm running Apache and using PHP codeigniter. To reference our CSS and JS files, we use this syntax: <?php echo site_url('css/styles.css'); ?> When viewing the site locally (within Ubuntu VM) that resolves to: http://localhost/styles.css So works fine. The catch is when I access that site from within Windows 7 (for IE testing). To access the site in Windows 7, I refer to the IP address of the VM: http://xx.x.x.x/ That loads the site but, alas, all the site_url variables are still being rewritten as 'localhost'. Said files obviously don't exist on the localhost of my windows 7. Is there a way around this short of just hard-coding relative links in my PHP file?

• Trac & Sqlite PK problem

  I create my trac enviromnets using a sqlite database, it works very well. Now i want to get some information directly from the database and i'm using C# to do it using System.Data.SQLite. The problem i have is an error in the designer cause the tables don't have primary keys. After get this error i went and noticed that all tables that have more than one primary key defined in the schema were not 'converted' to sqlite, that information is lost. I believe the problem is in sqlite_backend.py but python isn't my speciality and i'm in a hurry so if you can guide me to a quick fix. thank you.

• LINQ Quicksort is Unstable Except When Cascading

  On page 64 of "LINQ To Objects Using C# 4.0" (Tony Magennis) he states that LINQ's quicksort ordering algorithm is unstable... ...although this is simply solved by cascading the result into a ThenBy or ThenByDescending operator. Huh? Why would cascading an unstable sortation into another sortation fix the result? In fact, I'd say that isn't possible. The original order, once passed through an unstable sort, is simply lost. What am I missing here?

C# 3.0 doesn't just stop there." Should we increasingly use them instead of loops? And should be having loops(instead of those three building blocks of data manipulation) be one of the metrics for coding horrors on code reviews? And why? • Generate links for routes with non-parameter url segments on ASP.NET MVC 2

  I have a route defined with several hardcoded (non-parameter) segments: routes.MapRoute(null, "suggestion/list/by/{tag}", new { controller = "Suggestion", action = "List", tag = UrlParameter.Optional }); Suppose I'm in the Index view of SuggestionController, which has a Suggestion object for Model, how can I create a link that matches that route? I'd rather use one of the provided helpers and keep the route name as null in order to avoid hard-coding to much on my views, but I can't figure out how to user these non-parameter segments in Html.ActionLink or RouteLink methods. I've even tried to render the link using plain ol' html <a href="/suggestion/list/by/<%=Model.Tag %>"><%=Model.Tag %></a> but this somehow didn't match the route either. There's probably a very simple solution and I might be over-complicating things in mi mind, but I'm at a loss. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• adldap class, need to search for user in two groups

I was wondering how I could check multiple groups to see if the user belongs to either, if they belong to either. I don't know if user_ingroup($username,$group,$recursive=NULL); can handle search two different groups for the user, need help coding it to search for the user in two different groups, and as soon as it finds it in one of those, break the operation and set a variable to true. Any help is appreciated.

• What happens with TCP packets between two Socket.BeginReceive calls?

  I have a doubt about socket programming. I am developing a TCP packet sniffer. I am using Socket.BeginAccept, Socket.BeginReceive to capture every packet, but when a packet is received I have to process something. It is a fast operation, but would take some milliseconds, and then call BeginReceive again. My question is, what would happen if some packets are sent while I am processing, and haven't called BeginReceive? Are packets lost, or are they buffered internally? Is there a limit?
