  I have been a fulltime student recently working on graduate work to complete a graduate degree. While continuing my studies I have maintained my computer hobby. However, recently my computer hobby has been threatening to turn into a full-fledged side business. Because I am starting to have people come to me for computer help who I have never met before (who generally heard word-of-mouth from other people whose computers I looked at) I am seriously considering putting my conditions for working on a computer into writing (for potential damage control and perhaps liability reasons). Are there any standards for this that I should reference? Should responsibility be waived for times when the computer is left in my care or any time I look at a machine? Any advice you can provide here would be appreciated. What other lessons have you learned that I should be aware of in relation to helping people while continuing my studies as a hobby? • Windows virtual wifi hostednetwork - set max number of clients?

  I'm building an app that has functionality that creates on the fly a new virtual wifi utilizing the Windows 7 / 2008 features. I can create it just fine, but am looking how to limit the maximum number of connections. By running a "netsh wlan show hostednetwork" command to view my settings - it shows (by default 100), but it HAS to be somewhere in the registry right? - I can't see any settings available for this either at the command line or using the api - so I have to assume it's stored in the reg. I see vwifi and hostednetwork registry keys in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\ - Wlansvc\parameters\hostednetworksettings, etc... but can't find any reference to add a "MaxClients" value (or similar) - would like to limit it to only one connection. Has anyone seen any references to this, or know how to do it?

• Create and Utilize a Vista VHD via Windows 7

  I have a windows 7 base install and a windows 7 vhd. I am attempting to create the scenario where when I boot up I have the option of loading the windows 7 base, the windows 7 vhd or a vista vhd. I used virtual PC to create a vista vhd and then used bcdedit to set up that vhd as an option on start up. When I select that option though it goes to a repairing installation screen, fails and asks to restart (repeats if i try and select that option again). Anyone know either a) what is happening in my situation and what i can do to fix it or b) a good tutorial/reference on how to create and use a vista vhd from windows 7

• How can I re-encode H.264 video with minimal quality loss?

  I have a lot of MPEG-TS files (.TS container but H.264 video) and playback is fine except that when you skip forward/backward or fast forward it's very sluggish and gets pixelated, etc. I've been trying to do research and I'm guessing that they were encoding with very few reference blocks (ie. it's a capture from a DVB-S satellite stream). When I re-encode them with Handbrake (.MP4 container) they play very, very good and seeking in the video is instant, etc, etc. Is it possible to transcode/re-encode my MPEG-TS files with minimal quality loss? If so, what is my best bet? They are each about 2 Mbps (ie. 2 GB per hour) but I don't want to re-encode them if "minimal quality loss" requires 10+ GB per file. I'm hoping to keep the video are the same size. Can anybody give me any advice?

• HD Video Capture Card w/ Good API?

  Does anyone here know of a good HD video capture card that has a good (comprehensive) API? I administer a few servers that do some video encoding right now, but when we make the switch to HD cameras, they won't be sufficient. In addition to this, the servers we have now are black boxes, closed to me except to start/stop the video capture device. I'd like to be able to roll my own, so we can better integrate it with our existing systems, but I know almost nothing about what kind of HD capture cards are out there, and if I can avoid spending money just to test their APIs that would rock. So does anyone have any experience with this? All our other software is in C#, and I'd like to set up the new servers with web interfaces to start/stop the capture (also in C#, using .NET 3.5 probably). I'm not sure how language specific these APIs would be, but that's what I'm working with just as a reference point. I appreciate any help the community can give!

  To Clarify: my question is why isn't my password policy applying to people in the domain. Hey guys, having trouble with our password policy in Active Directory. Sometimes it just helps me to type out what I’m seeing It appears to not be applying properly across the board. I am new to this environment and AD in general but I think I have a general grasp of what should be going on. It’s a pretty simple AD setup without too many Group Policies being applied. • Force initial Google Drive sync with a non-empty folder?

  I upgraded my iMac with an SSD last night and restored from a Time Capsule backup. Everything is now working substantially zippier and overall better, with the exception of one thing: Google Drive refuses to continue to sync with the Google Drive folder that it'd been using before the upgrade, and I ultimately ended up having to just delete the folder and let it resync from scratch to get past its stubborn error (alternatively, I suppose I could've simply moved the contents, set the path to the now-empty folder, then moved them back). Is there any way to get past this particular issue (for future reference), or is it something that Google put in place to ensure that a new user doesn't go and specify their root drive as the backup destination?

• What's the difference between a Table and a Named Range in Excel 2007?

  Can someone explain the difference between Tables and Named Ranges in Excel 2007? It seems that in addition to having the features of Named Ranges, they're somehow marked as Tables which gives them special formatting & filtering options in the ribbon. Other questions: Can I treat a table as a named range? Does a named range provide me any functionality not offered by a table, and vice versa? Should I use one over the other (assuming that consumers of the spreadsheet are using Excel 2007 or higher)? Google has not been helpful (excel difference between named range and table and excel 2007 difference between named range and table) and I've found one resource describing table functionality, but no reference to named ranges.

• SAN newbie: What kind of fiber cables do I need to connect to the front end ports on my EMC CX300

  I have an old CX300 I'm messing with and I cant determine what kind of HBA\fiber cables I need to connect a server to the front end ports on the DPE2. The hardware reference doesn't give me any details and being new to FC-SAN all of the options are pretty overwhelming. I don't know if the ports are SC or LC or if it requires singlemode or multimode. Googling hasn't turned up anything for me either. All I know is that it supports 2GB Fiber. • CLI way of uninstalling a Windows update?

  Basically, what can be achieved by going to Control Panel Uninstall a Program View Installed Updates Right Click Uninstall, but through the command line? Looking for a way that works across the Windows platform but if (and according to my reading, most likely) it's version dependent so be it. Maybe something like: C:\command /uninstall "Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2705219)" Looks like using the KB would be great but wusa.exe works for the above example update but not for say "Security Update for Silverlight (KBXXXXXXXX)". Not much consistency. I'm really surprised there isn't much documentation on this. How does an app like WUInstall do it? Follow up question is how is that list of "View Installed Updates" populated? I've searched the registry like crazy hoping for an "UninstallString" or equivalent but only found references to the regular Add/Remove Programs list. Thought I would reference a StackOverflow question for another perspective.

  I have a free RAM slot and some spare memory that will fit my computer. However the problem is my motherboard only supports 2GB and I have 2GB installed. What would happen if I plugged the spare memory in the RAM slot? The following things spring to mind: Nothing will happen It will work, computer becomes faster Computer becomes slower Explosion Undetermined (Any of the above) Does anyone have any experience of this? Update: Egged on by you zealous lot, I went ahead and stuck the extra memory in. It booted up! Unfortunately, the hunch of some has been proved correct. The memory is reported at the capped limit, rather then the actual available. A shame then! But thank you all for your suggestions, speculations and stories. For your reference, I am using a Dell Insprion 6000 with 2gb installed, latest drivers. I attempted to add 512mb, with no success.

I've tried [http://offline$S] but that doesn't append the "suffix" /products the way I thought it should. What's going on here?

It was made by Packard Bell, but i can't find hardly any information on older packard bell computers anywhere online. I got the computer around 1999, give or take a couple of years. • Squid 3 reloading makes it stop serving requests

  So, we use Squid 3 here (3.0.STABLE8-3+lenny4), pretty standard configuration (no dansguardian or similar) + NTLM authentication with LDAP background, circa 1000 users on a busy day, and our acls reference some external files (allowed/blocked sites/ip addresses). On Squid 2.X we used to be capable of reloading it's configuration (to add or sites or addresses to rules, etc) and squid would not stop serving during the reload. Since we changed to 3.0, that seems to be impossible: everytime we use reload (or -k reconfigure) it stop serving requests for as long as 2 minutes, and clients receive a Configured proxy is not accepting connections message. I checked the documentation and got nothing about it, does anyone else suffer from this problem or is it a isolated case on my setup? Also, if you have Squid 3.0 and doesn't suffer from this problem, how is your squid configured?

  I have a spreadsheet in Open Office 3.0 Calc. The spreadsheets consist of the first sheet and an arbitrary number of additional sheets, each collecting data for a specific month. The Month sheets have an identical structure. The first sheet is supposed to provide an overview to the most important numbers in the month sheets. What I would like to do is this: Whenever I add a Month sheet, I want it to appear automatically in the Overview sheet with the structure given below.   I'm trying to make curl use GOST2001-GOST89-GOST89 cipher which is available and usable by OpenSSL but keep getting failed setting cipher list error despite the fact that curl sees gost engine and can use GOST client certificates. How can I fix this?   Hi, I'm attempting to investigate the root cause of the following error which occurs each time a users call an Oracle 10g Forms applet: FRM-92102: A network error has occurred. The Forms Client has attempted to reestablish its connection to the Server 1 time(s) without success. Please check the network connection and try again later. Details... Java Exception: java.io.IOException: Connection failure with 503 This error remained after restarting all my system components: HTTP_Server, OC4J_BI_Forms, Web Cache, Reports Server, etc. The only way to clear this issue was to restart the server entirely. During the downtime, web pages were rendered with the PL/SQL cartridge and being served, so it appears as though this was isolated to forms. Does anybody know which log files may provide clues here? Any help would be much appreciated :) Update: If somebody can provide me with a way or reference to increase the capacity of my web server to minimize these errors, I will accept this as the solution.

  While working on large-scale projects, I collect all mail conversations pertaining to the project in a separate folder within Outlook. When the project is completed, I want to archive the entire folder, for reference purposes. So my question is this: Does anyone know of a tool/plugin for Outlook 2007/2010 that allows you to drag/drop a mailfolder from within Outlook, to a Windows Explorer window, exporting the folder as a .pst file, preserving folder structure and timestamps on mails? I am doing this manually at the moment, but having a tool that would use simple drag/drop-functionality would greatly simplify my workflow for handling project-specific mail.

• How to start vim without executing /etc/vimrc?

  On my Linux server at work, the admins did not install cscope, and I installed it from source in my home directory and added it to the $PATH. The trouble is, the /etc/vimrc has a reference to /usr/bin/cscope which does not exist and everytime I start vim, it complains about that and I have to press for that message to go away. It is interesting that if I remove cscope from my $PATH, I don't get that behavior - so it is possible that vim is testing that cscope exists somewhere, and only then executing the cscope configuration - but then it gets it wrong! So my question is: can I set something up in my .vimrc so it does not source the global /etc/vimrc? I don't want to move cscope out of PATH, as I don't want to type the full directory name every time I run it from the command line.

  Hi, I am a very basic user new to macros and vba. My problem is that I recive online orders to which i need to click an auto generated unique order hyperlink to confirm receipt of the order within a specified time period. This is a mundane task having to be on 'standby' and was wondering if there was a way to have this link automatically clicked when the email arrives. Just to reiterate the link has a unique reference and is different on each email. Please bare in mind that I am a very basic user and would probably require step by step instructions. On the line "inetnum": "122.4.0.0/14", What does it mean for the prefix to be 14? I am using this as a reference Subnet Mask Cheatsheet While resolving it, I get a very wide range which is something like 122.7.0.0-122.4.0.0 I am not able to understand how the IP range is calculate from the subnet mask and I am only able to find calculators online and not a method to solve it.
