• How to disable Chrome themes/skins and get default window decorations

  Is there a way to disable Chrome's custom window skinning such that it lets the OS draw standard window title bars, borders, etc, in the style I have configured the OS to draw such things with? I didn't spend all that time with the control panel setting a window style that pleases me just to have applications decide that they know better than me how I want my windows to look. As a practical matter, having each application decide for itself which color cues to use to show "this is the active window" becomes very confusing. Alternatively, is there a tool somewhere that reads the Windows 7 color and window style settings and produces a Chrome theme that imitates them?

  Mozilla says that with Firefox Sync if you are working on one computer with 5 tabs open you can then switch to another computer or device and Sync can or will update the second computer with those tabs. How do I do this? BACKGROUND I have setup Firefox Sync on both devices and they have been synced. How do you sync them again? Is it automatically syncing them in the background? How often? How do you sync the tabs? Are the passwords synced? Documentation The documentation below describes how to add another device or computer to Sync. It says that when you add the device it syncs it.   Possible Duplicate: Recommended offline on-demand virus scanners I'm looking for an unintrusive antivirus program that I can get to run scans on suspicious objects on demand and only on demand. Most other antivirus programs install many layers of protection and things running in the background and preform regular updates and system scans at inconvenient times. I want an antivirus program that I can simply right click and object and select "scan for viruses" and nothing more. Is there a reliable antivirus program out there that offers this and only this without the automatic updates, background processes, and intrusive automatic system scans? Note: this is for Windows.

• Switching BIOS SATA RAID/AHCI setting causes BSOD at Windows Start - Why?

  I just changed my disk setup from: 1 SATA HDD Primary OS Disk 2x SATA HDD Backup Disks in RAID 1 TO: 1 SATA SSD Primary OS Disk 1 SATA HDD Backup Disk [No RAID] Everything worked great, no problem. So, since I don't have a RAID array anymore, I decided that I could change my BIOS setting to AHCI instead of RAID. I have a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R v1.0 mobo. These are my steps: Settings Integrated Peripherals "SATA RAID/AHCI Mode" = RAID -- Changed this setting to AHCI Reboot Windows Start screen shows up, but as the color orbs are spinning into focus, BSOD and immediate restart Repeated reboot several times, same outcome Next Step: Launch BIOS settings Integrated Peripherals "Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode" = RAID -- Changed this setting to AHCI Reboot Windows Start screen shows up, but as the color orbs are spinning into focus, BSOD and immediate restart Repeated reboot several times, same outcome Switch both settings back to RAID, reboot, and Windows starts up just fine, no issues. What am I missing? Why can't I set it to AHCI mode without BSODs?

  Hi, I am running a bash script as a background job. The bash script calls a time-consuming executable. If I am not wrong, the running of the bash script is the parent process and the running of the executable is the child process. I now want to stop the whole running by killing the parent process which is the background job kill -9 $(jobs -p) The terminal shows that the running of the bash script is killed. But the running of the executable still hangs on the output of top. I just wonder how to also kill the child process? Thanks and regards!

• windows 7 crash during hibernation

  At times, when I hibernate my Dell Latitude e6400 with Windows 7 (64 bit), the laptop screen goes black as it should, but then it takes several minutes before it powers down. Then, when I attempt to "resume," Windows boots up from a fresh startup, with all my work lost, and tells me that it's recovered from a serious error. What can I do to resolve this problem? Other background info: -I got a new hard drive with plenty of space about a year ago; I only use a small fraction of that space. This sometimes happens when I don't have any programs running at all. If it's relevant, I do have Dropbox and OneDrive running in the background, though. -The problem usually occurs when I hibernate just after I unplug from an external monitor to bring my laptop home, but I believe it happens at other times, too. • Skype message sync and notifications - Windows 8

  The problem is that my messages don't seem to sync and neither do I get notifications from the Windows Store App. I have both, the desktop program and the Windows Store App, the problem is that whenever someone messages me I do not receive a notification of the App but I get one from the desktop program. The Skype app is running in the background and does not have disabled the notifications neither have turned on sleep notifications. I have to manually open the app and moreover, open the chat window of the one who is talking to me, then wait like 10 minutes and then the chat will get syncronized. in short: Notifications don't work even: if computer unlocked and Skype is running in background if computer unlocked and Skype is running in foreground These doesn't seem to help: Reboot doesn't affects skype. Having only the App opened. Uninstalling/reinstalling Is there a way to fix this? or is this an issue with the Skype app in Windows 8?

  I hate the new windows 8.1 search. I mean a truly loathe it. It's easily the absolute worst thing Microsoft has ever made (including bing and IE). I asked how to get the old search back and the answer was that you can't. Honestly, I haven't noticed any changes from 8 - 8.1 besides a single tile has changed color (dunno why, the color doesn't even match the icon), and I really hate this new search thing. So how do I get 8 back?

• Getting jerky backgrounds on Win7 on iMac 27'' 2560x1440

  I installed Win7 on bootcamp on my new iMac 27'' (ATI videocard) and everything was good until recently I noticed that the default win7 background (then one on the background on login) looked jerky. When I say jerky I mean the kind of jerky you get if you can't display enough colours, and instead of nice fading shades you just get stripes and jerky patterns. I am on native resolution but even if I go down to 1920x1080 I get the same. This might have happened after a firmware update but as I don't use windows very often I am not too sure it's what caused it. Oh, and when I am playing games everything looks OK (as in not jerky!). Any help appreciated!

• Is there a way to prevent output from backgrounded tasks from covering the command line in a shell?

  I would like to be able to run task(s) in the background of a shell and not have their output to stdout or stderr cover the command line at the bottom. Frequently I need to run other commands to interact with the background processes and would like to do so from the same shell without having to open up another terminal or using multiplexer to split the terminal like screen. Ideally there would be some setting that I just don't know about (I commonly use bash or ksh), but a new or different shell or a script would be fine by me. I'm open to any suggestions and appreciate any help, thanks.

• Weird graphical artefacts on OS X Snow Leopard.

  Since a couple of days I experience some strange graphical artefacts on Snow Leopard. Usually after a certain uptime, the background image would show some strange colours at some place. This could be reverted by reloading the background image. But the problem would appear again after rebooting (and waiting for an indefinite time). Sometimes, the shadow of windows would also have some artefacts; and this time the application switcher is completely distorted. Any ideas where I need to search for a solution of the problem? Edit: Model: MacBook Gen. 3.1 / all updates installed Update: After not having used Safari for a while, the problem has not occurred anymore (at least not after 20 days of uptime). Could well be that the problem had its origin in Safari or a Safari-related plugin. (Possibly Flash or Click-to-Flash as it did not happen with both deactivated, though the running time with this configuration might have been to short to be of any validity.)

  Operating system: Mac OS 10.6.2 I'd like to be able to see colour output when piping certain commands through less. Two examples: I've got ls aliased to ls --color=auto, so I'd like to be able to see colour when I do this: ls -l | less I've also got the color extension turned on in Mercurial, so I'd like to see colour output from: hg diff | less and hg st | less After some googling, it seems like some versions of less support either -r or -R to make this work, but no dice for me. I can't see anything in the man page that looks like what I need. (-r or -R SEEM to be the right options, but again, they don't seem to work)

• Firefox Master Password (ssh-agent)

  I use the master password feature of Firefox, and I also use SSH keys to login to a bunch of UNIX machines. For SSH, there is a very useful application called ssh-agent that runs in the background knowing the required information about unlocking the key so you don't have to type the question every single time you want to connect. I open and close Firefox a lot, so I was curious, is there a way to have Firefox run in the background (preferrably doing nothing, but the whole process would be fine I guess as well) so that I don't have to type my master password every single time I open Firefox?   Im trying to extract certain data from a cell and trying to put it somewhere else within the same cell. Any suggestions? EDIT I have several text strings in ONE cell (a date, a part number and a color). The format looks like this 100906 PBO5 BLUE. The date is always the same number of characters but the part number could be 2, 3 or 4 characters. I want to move the date to the position after the color so it looks like this PBO5 BLUE 100906. I have over 1,000 records so I don’t want to do this manually.

• How to convert poor quality bitmap image to vector?

  I'm designing a website for a group which has lost the original digital image for their logo. The only file they have of it is a jpg which was embedded into a word document. The image has everything possible wrong with it: Anti-aliased onto a white background where it should be transparent Image artefacts Resized downwards poorly. Lines that should be straight and solid aren't. I've currently used the wand tool to get rid of the white background, and stuck it on the website, but it's poor quality makes it stick out like a sore thumb. I need a few different sizes of it to use, so how would I go about creating a vector image based on it?

• Process ANSI escape codes before piping

  I'm trying to pipe the output of a script (Mocha) to another script. However there is one problem: Mocha generates quite a few ansi escape characters to update the screen on the fly. These characters are also send through the pipe. Is there a way to process the ansi sequence such that the output is the same as the final output to the screen? I do want to keep color escape sequences, but not the curser movement escapes. Edit: I have a partial solution now (for Mocha only): so far it seems that Mocha with the spec output (the one I use) only generates color ecape characters and the CSI 0G escape sequence. The CSI 0G escape character means that the cursor should move back to the beginning of the line. Mocha uses this to overwrite a line completely. Therefore you could simply create a sed regexp which will delete everything up to that escape sequence on a line: sed 's/^.*\x1b\[0G//g'. I am still looking for the complete solution though.

• X-ming, Ubuntu apps - getting the Ubuntu style/theme to load

  I am running X-ming on Windows 7 and using putty to ssh into an Ubuntu system. On the Ubuntu system I use the command: $ gnome-terminal & to display a terminal back on the Windows box. When I do this I don't get the standard Ubuntu style, i.e. dark purple background, Mono font, solid cursor (which I've configured in the Gnome Control Center.) Instead I get a very plain style - white background, blinking cursor, very small font. However, if I run gnome-control-center and then click on, say, the Keyboard icon, the terminal window will be reconfigured with the Ubuntu style with my customizations (e.g. block cursor vs. blinking cursor.) Just starting one of the control applets seems to trigger this style change. My question is: How can I trigger this style change more directly - without having to launch the Gnome Control center and launching one of the configuration applets?

To run kippo, I do: su kippo ~/kippo/start.sh The contents of start.sh is simply: #!/bin/sh echo -n "Starting kippo in background..." authbind --deep twistd -y kippo.tac -l log/kippo.log --pidfile kippo.pid Which starts up a background process for kippo. What can I do to make this automatically run on startup? Do I need to add a script that calls this in /etc/init.d?

• How to make playing track in Foobar2000 more noticeable?

  The current playing track is signaled only by a very discreet arrow - no bold, no highlight, no different color. The only 'highlighting'happens by selecting tracks. In other players the difference between selected tracks and highlighted/playing tracks is obvious. Are there some settings - I don't mean skins - that would improve this? Edit considering my answer below: maybe that line $if(%isplaying%, ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?) could be edited to make the track bold or of a certain color?
