• Sendmail Tuning For Batch Mail Jobs

  I have a webservers that send out emails to a sendmail relay server as a batch job. The emails need to be accepted by the relay sendmail server as fast as possible, however, they do not need to go out (be relayed) very quickly. I am seeing a couple timeouts once and a while from the webserver trying to connect to the relay server. The load currently is about 30 emails a second for a couple minutes. There are quite a few tuning options for sendmail in the sendmail tuning guide. What I am focusing on now is the Delivery Mode: Delivery Mode There are a number of delivery modes that sendmail can operate in, set by the DeliveryMode ( d) configuration option. These modes specify how quickly mail will be delivered. Legal modes are: i deliver interactively (synchronously) b deliver in background (asynchronously) q queue only (don't deliver) d defer delivery attempts (don't deliver) There are tradeoffs. Mode i gives the sender the quickest feedback, but may slow down some mailers and is hardly ever necessary. Mode b delivers promptly but can cause large numbers of processes if you have a mailer that takes a long time to deliver a message. Mode q minimizes the load on your machine, but means that delivery may be delayed for up to the queue interval. Mode d is identical to mode q except that it also prevents lookups in maps including the -D flag from working during the initial queue phase; it is intended for ``dial on demand'' sites where DNS lookups might cost real money. Some simple error messages (e.g., host unknown during the SMTP protocol) will be delayed using this mode. Mode b is the usual default. If you run in mode q (queue only), d (defer), or b (deliver in background) sendmail will not expand aliases and follow .forward files upon initial receipt of the mail. This speeds up the response to RCPT commands. Mode i should not be used by the SMTP server. I currently have the CentOS default modes: Sendmail.cf: DeliveryMode=background Submit.cf: DeliveryMode=i Is sendmail.cf/mc for outgoing email from relay (to the intertubes) and sumbit.cf/mc for incoming eamil (from my webservers). Would it make sense to change the outgoing delivery mode to queue? If I did, what would the outbound email flow behave like? If this is the right thing to do, can anyone show me example mc configurations for this change? If it isn't, what recommendations are there for these constraints?

• Laptop windows 7 power settings - screen display goes black after 1 minute

  My laptop windows 7 power settings are not working since last week, i have tried using "Dim display after 5 hours" and "Dim Never" also, but my screen goes black after 1 minute. Any resolutions ? • Does lighter wallpaper consumes lesser power than a Darker one

  My VAIO advised me to switch to a White Background, to reduce power consumption. But it seems contradictory to common logic. Its like saying a brighter Torch consuming less than a dimmer one. Common Logic says that, Screen is BLACK when not using any POWER, so displaying black color should not consume any power (because without powering any pixel it gives black color) Also a white screen gives me more light than a darker one, so it should use more Energy. White Wallpaper = More Light Output = More Electrical Energy Consumed Black Wallpaper = Less Light = Less Electricity Consumed My question is - Is there anything wrong with the above argument ? A Lighter Wallpaper consumes less power than a Darker one. Is it true ? If yes, Why ?

• How can I set up conditional formatting to highlight a range only if all its cells are empty?

  I am new to conditional formatting and having a hard time. I have 6 columns with 100 rows. What I would like to have happen is to highlight the row in one color if there is no data in it at all. If there is data in one cell within the row, however, I would like for the highlighting to be removed from the row completely. Currently I have it set up to highlight the entire row if there is no data in it and if there is data in one cell, only that cell has no highlighting....I can't seem to make the entire row's highlighting disappear. I have used the formula to determine which cells to format: =I16:N16="" formatting color is yellow. I know I have to add a second conditional format but I have tried numerous different formulas and cant seem to get it to work.

• How to use graphical line drawing characters with Midnight Commander on OS X under ssh?

  I discovered that when I do ssh to a machine using OS X 10.6 and use mc I do not see the graphical line drawing characters. This does not happen if I open terminal and start mc. I'm connecting using putty configured to use xterm-color, configuraton that works just fine if I do ssh to a linux machine. The mc from OS X is version 4.7.0 (installed using macports). What locale returns: LC_CTYPE="C" <== ssh LC_CTYPE="UTF-8" <== Terminal.app ssh: mc display bits shows: 7-bit ASCII (changing does not help, it defaults to the same value) Terminal.app: mc display bits shows: UTF-8 The environment shows TERM=xterm-color in both cases Terminal.app and ss but mc looks different. By now, I have a shell script that starts an application in the foreground and waits for the termination of the application afterwards starts several applications (like browser, mailer, IRC client) in the background The script is working, however all the applications are getting the same icon and are treated like different windows of one application, i.e. the script. Is there a way to start applications from a script, that makes Unity display the icons of the applications, e.g. the Thunderbird icon, instead of a single default icon for the script? I want to track the usage like: Who (IP Address) initiated the print task Time Status: Success or Failure How many Pages Color or Gray Scale etc. I checked the manuals and nothing about this requirement is available. The built-in control panel log displays only last 10 activities. Is there a way to track these information? Is there an API avaialble so that I can make an application myself?

• Why do I sometimes get 'sh: $'\302\211 ... ': command not found' in xterm/sh?

  Sometimes when I simply type a valid command like 'find ...', or anything really, I get back the following, which is completely unexpected and confusing (... is command name I type): sh: $'\302\211...': command not found There is some corruption going on I think. I don't use color in my prompt, I am using the Bash shell in POSIX mode as sh (chsh to /bin/sh and so on - $SHELL is sh). What is going on and why does this keep happening? Anything I can debug? I think this is more of an xterm issue than sh, or at least a combination of the two.   Is there tool or a regexp that can convert shell escape characters to HTML code? Here is a related question, which shows how to convert it to regular text, but it would be nice to convert to HTML and not just throw the escape characters away.

• VMware player suspends on screensaver

  I have this problem with my VMWare player. When my host operating system either goes into screen saver or I lock the work station with Windows Key + L. VMWare player pauses or halts everything. So when i come back to the computer and there is a background task working inside the virtual machine it does not progress until i've actualy loged back on. Is there any way to stop this behaviour with VMWare player and keep it running in the background even when the screen saver or the work station is locked? Version of VMWare is: 3.0.0 build-203739

• How Can I Not Show the Green Download Progress Display for Google Chrome in the Windows Taskbar?

  I use Windows 7 and when downloading with Google Chrome the icon in the taskbar has a partially green background that indicates the download progress. Is there a way to not show this green status indicator in the Windows taskbar? I find it distracting when I am working. It seems there is no option to disable it. I do not want to hide the icon entirely but rather just not show the green background. Is this possible? I have searched for an option or setting to change this but there seems to be surprisingly little information about this on the internet. I imagine that others would also appreciate it if there is some solution for this. Thanks.

  On Youtube, there is this nice button (easy to overlook - top left of the video) which lets one "turn off the lights": the site background changes from white to black, the text color changes from black to grey. There is an unrelated plug-in for Firefox called "Turned Off The Lights", which has a very similar functionality. This makes websites so much easier to read. However, both technologies only work on YouTube. Is there anything to achive the same effect for all websites? Preferably with Firefox? I.e.: I want to have very dark background and light text color on all websites viewed with Firefox, how can I do that?

  I have a specific website I often use (specifically, http://www.pygame.org/), which has an awful color scheme. I would like to change the color scheme of the site, but I haven't been able to find a good tool for the job. Some basic requirements: It should not be universal to all websites, or affect other websites. I want this to be semi-automatic. I don't want to have to re-define the theme for each page of the site. I want to continue to access the site online (I don't want a local copy of the entire site) Not OS-specific (browser-specific is okay) I am currently using Firefox, but I am also happy with Chrome. There may be some limitations on what is able to be done automatically, as the CSS seems to be embedded in the HTML (and some also in the HTML tags). I would like to remove as much of the green as possible. Is there an existing extension/add-on that does this?

• Apple Remote Desktop and Screen Sharing

  We have a Mac OS 10.8.2 server that we want to be able to administer with Apple Remote Desktop. At the same time, we want normal users to be able to access their account screens (through background login) without being able to view the current screen. However, in order to enable this (by enabling the "normal" Screen Sharing option in System Preferences) Remote Desktop needs to be disabled. The question is - how can we run both Remote Desktop for administrators and VNC screen sharing for normal users while restricting normal users to logging in on a background window instead of viewing the front screen?

I have looked at various videos on Youtube but I cannot determine the correct wiring. all the colors of the cable I saw there are different from mine. Mine is untwisted, and it is not color coded.   I have dates that are running off a formula in that column based on information it is collecting from other worksheets. I have another column that lists text answers based on a different formula that that column is running. It is a customer list that runs with names going down page and multiple columns of information for each client running across page What i want to do is: If column j says "paid" then turn column m - same row - a color or border or something I will repeat this formula for the various things that j can say, just cant figure out how to make conditional formatting read j to change m. To complicate things, in addition to the formula running to collect the date in m, there is also a conditional format set up for m that changes the color of the cells after a certain date. I want to be able to keep that formula, in addition to the one that you are assisting with...i will use highlighting, or something different to avoid any conflicts.

  Hi my college has a HP color printer that can be used to print both A3 and A4 size color printouts. It is connected to a windows 2008 print server. The windows event viewer provides the status of printouts using event id 307. I would like to know if it is possible to find out if an A3 page was printed or A4 page was printed. Is this information also logged in windows event viewer. Or is there any other event id that captures this information. Also the number of copies printed should be captured in event id 805. I have read in some forums that sometimes the value is wrong. Please provide me some information on this. Thanks in advance.

  I am changing from Windows XP to Windows 7. One thing I cannot stand about Windows 7 is that whenever you mouse over files in Explorer (or other file-browser), it highlights the files with a semi-transparent block. This is nice, but I want to be able to double-click on the white area background of the directory, and I can't do this with the highlighted selection always there. The hovering-block is always in the way of the background - especially if there are a lot of files in the directory. (I don't even know what that hovering-block is called; if someone enlightens me, I'll re-title my post) Is there any way to get the file selector to work like XP?

• How do I make control-click in Opera open new tabs?

  Update: As of version 11.50, control-click opens the new tab in background, as desired. Yay! In Opera, as opposed to all other modern browsers I know, control-click does not open a new tab. Moreover, I couldn't find any good way to configure this behavior. The best available option seems to be this. However, it's so hacky that it won't work on HTTPS sites unless you enable user javascript there, which doesn't seem like a good idea. There also seem to be other proposed solutions, but none of them seem to work. I'd like this because my laptop has no middle mouse-button, and I'm a creature of habit. Do people have any ideas (for the latest version, 10.50)? I'd like ctrl-click to open a background tab, but I can do with foreground. Thank you!

• Cronjob terminates early

  In my crontab file I execute a script like so (I edit the crontab using sudo crontab -e): 01 * * * * bash /etc/m/start.sh The script runs some other scripts like so: sudo bash -c "/etc/m/abc.sh --option=1" & sleep 2 sudo bash -c "/etc/m/abc.sh --option=2" & When cron runs the script start.sh, I do ps aux | grep abc.sh and I see the abc.sh script running. After a couple of seconds, the script is no longer running, even though abc.sh should take hours to finish. If I do sudo bash /etc/m/start.sh & from the command line, everything works fine (the abc.sh scripts run for hours in the background until they complete). How do I debug this? Is there something I'm doing that is preventing these scripts from running in the background until they are done?
