• 13.10 Saucy login issues; black screen, loop, and freeze

  Once upgraded to I 13.10 I was not able to get past the login screen. I had the black screen. Also; I can not log on with low graphics mode from recovery either. It makes no difference if I try default graphics driver or not. Then after running sudo install -f from recovery root prompt I got a login loop. I have purged fglrx, fglrx-legacy, and nvidia-current. I updated my repository with xorg-edgers and reinstalled nvidia-current. Now it semi-freezes at the login screen when I try to log on as my normal user. I say 'semi' because I can still use my mouse to click on the upper right hand Ubuntu logo and Shut Down or Restart the PC. I still cannot log on with my user name, but I can through the Guest login. While logged in as Guest I added a new user account with administrative privileges. I CAN log into this account without problem and from here am able to see that my .dmrc file in my original account reads: [Desktop] Session=XBMC I have changed 'Session=XBMC' to 'Session=ubuntu' and rebooted, but to no avail. The file resets itself and makes a backup of my changes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How To Export/Import a Website in IIS 7.x

  IIS 6 had a great feature called ‘Save Configuration to a File’ which would allow you to easily export a website’s configuration, to be later used to import either on the same server or another box.  This came in handy anytime you wanted to duplicate a site in order to do some testing without impacting the existing application.  So naturally, Microsoft decided to do away with this feature in IIS 7. The process to export/import a site is still fairly simple, though not as obvious as it was in previous versions.  Here are the steps: 1. Open a command prompt and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv and run the following command: appcmd list site /name:<sitename> /config /xml > C:\output.xml So if you were wanting to export a website named EAC, you would run the following: If you’ll be setting up another copy of the site on the same server, you’ll now need to edit the output.xml file before importing it.  This is necessary in order to avoid conflicts such as bindings, Site ID, etc.  To do this, edit the XML and change the values.  Go ahead and make a copy of the home directory, and rename it to whatever folder name you specified in the output – /EAC2 in this example.  If you decide to change the app pool, make sure you go ahead and create the new app pool as well. Once these edits have been made, we are now ready to import the site.  To do that run: appcmd add sites /in < c:\output.xml So for our example it would look like this: That’s it.  You should now see your site listed when opening up Inet Manager.  If for some reason the site fails to start, that’s probably because you forgot to create the new app pool or there is a problem with one of the other parameters you changed.  Look at the System log to identify any issues like this.

• I just recursively chmod'd everything under / to 750. Any tips?

  I won't be the first and I won't be the last, I suppose. While playing around with the find command, I made a whoops and it would appear that instead of changing the permissions of the ~/web directory to 750, it changed the permissions of the entire filesystem (/) to 750, however I'm not certain, but any attempt to investigate is thwarted by Permission denied messages. For everything. This was the offending command: sudo find ~/web . type d -exec chmod 750 {} If I'm not mistaken, the Ubuntu team disabled root logins as a safety precaution so I'm out of ideas. I'm (obviously) a total newbie when it comes to file permissions so I was wondering if anyone had some good or even some bad advice to share. I've mentally prepped myself to losing everything on the computer which is only of mild consequence, since I have backups, but I did do a bit of work on this box over the week and it would be a shame to lose it all due to a boneheaded mistake. If you are reading this message, ask yourself, have you backed up any of your work recently? Thanks in advance for any insights. Feel free to scold me for using sudo carelessly

• AppleTV - itunes store is temporarily unavailable - please check back later

  When attempting to rent a movie on ATV, my wife received the error message above.  Alternately “server unavailable”.  When your wife is sick, the amount of IT support she needs goes up exponentially.  One piece of the puzzle was that she had changed her Apple ID password.  On her PC I ran iTunes and under account, there was only 1 device listed (not the ATV).  Even when signed out/back-in on the ATV under Settings>iTunes it still gave same error message.  What I suspect is it thinks she is trying to authorize the device to another Apple ID.  Some new 90 day rule limits when a device can be associated with another Apple ID.  Your iTunes store/account will show devices, and how long before they can be associated with a different Apple ID from the Account Information page in iTunes on your computer.  Apple must have no freaking idea why someone would want to know which ID is associated to the ATV (i.e. the vice versa), because it can’t be done. Solution: Try ATV settings>reset I swapped out ATV 1 for ATV 2 (used for music streaming downstairs).  I know it’s a cop-out solution, but remember I had a sick wife breathing down my neck.

• Skip CodedUI Tests, use Selenium for Web Automation

They have a working beta product after 10 or so 2 week sprints and already had UI’s that had changed several times as they went through iterations of their UI. As a result, the QA team was falling behind with automated tests and I was tasked to help them catch up and expand their tests. The project is a website. I heard many complaints about how hard it is to work with CodedUI (writing our own code, not relying on the recorder as we wanted re-usable and more maintainable code) then it took me 4+ hours to fix one issue. It was hard to traverse the key and debugging the objects with breakpoints… I said out loud “there has to be a better way or a framework the uses jQuery to run through the tests.” Plus it seemed really slow (wait… finding the object … wait… start putting in text…). Plus some tests would randomly fail on the test agents (using the test settings and an automated build, they are run on VMs using Microsoft test agents). Enough complaining. Selenium to the rescue (mostly). The lead QA guy decided to try it out and we haven’t turned back. We are now running tests in Chrome and Firefox and they run a lot faster. We had IE running to, but some of the tests were running fine locally, but hanging on the test agents. I’ll add some hints and lessons learned in a later post.

• Ubuntu 14.04 stalling. Problem with LightDM. Plymouth (and logging out) switches over to a black screen w/ white cursor

  if its a duplicate, sorry. Couldn't find anything that fits my issue, much less that was on 14.04. I changed a few things recently. Switched to the Numix theme (from PPA), installed lm-sensors and psensor (ran all the I/O probes), Ubuntu Tweak, Pinta, and well, Team Fortress 2 on Steam. :P The system will get to the Plymouth 'ubuntu' screen, load load, all dots filled, switches over to LightDM, but wait! No LightDM. :I Just a blank screen with that white cursor. Can't switch out to tty1-6 - not sure if the Ctrl-Alt-F1 is disabled in 14.04 or if its literally just locked down. If I change any files, I have access to the filesystem from my Windows 8 partition. That's it. :/ I'm pretty familiar with Linux, especially Ubuntu, but I think I'm still at the point I know just enough to break things and not always how to fix 'em. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! UPDATE I was just able to get into my desktop briefly. I booted Ubuntu. When the black screen froze, I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del. When it started switching off, I hit Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. It rebooted. I plugged the second monitor in I had been using before the issue ever came about. Plymouth displayed on both. LightDM came up, displayed on both (it used to show only the ubuntu logo on the unfocused monitor though). I logged in just fine. Even ran some pending software updates. I logged out of the desktop though, and LightDM refused to show again. xP

  I’ve been meaning to start a blog for a while now, (OK, for several years…..) - finally now, here it begins First post, something really simple but, a wise-man once told me about the best way to improve SQL server performance. Store Less Data. That's it.. that's all there is to it... Over the years, I've seen the following :- -  a 200Gb database which held 3 days data. Once business requirements changed, we were able to hold only 1 days data in this database. -  a table developed by DBAs to hold application table cardinality information - that information was collected at 2 hour intervals every day for 7 years ! After 7 years the DBA space-info table had become the largest table in the database - 60 million rows !  It was a simple change to remove alot of the historical intra-day data and change the schedule to run only once per evening. Suddenly that table held 6 million rows instead of 60 million.... - lots of backup and restore history held in msdb. See this post by Brent Ozar for more details on this issue. Imagine how much faster the backups, DBCC Checks and reindexes ran when the above 3 changes were implemented ?   How often do you review your big databases \ tables to see if you’re actually holding only data that is really required by the business ?

• Run a VirtualBox VM in a second X-Server with Graphic support

  I'm starting a VirtualBox VM (Windows 7) in a second X-Server (Ubuntu 14.04) and i'm using the following xinit script (/path/.vboximage): optirun VBoxManage startvm <vm name> & exec tinywm I recognized that while running Virtualbox normally under Gnome (Unity to be precise ;-) ) I get full graphics support. But when I run it on a second xserver there seem to be some problems. E.g. Windows Aero doesn't seem to work and Chrome WebGL demos are running with poorer performance. I'm not a big Windows expert, so I don't know how I could check the used Graphic card (specification). But it is very obvious that something has changed when running the vm in the extra X-Server. Also when I try to replace tinywm with compiz I get the unity frame around the VM, which also seems to have no graphics acceleration (no transparency effects) So it seems that the X-Server doesn't have Graphic acceleration at all. I have a NVidia 525m and an Intel HD3000 which are both capable of advanced graphics. I'm starting the above script with startx /path/.vboximage - :1 How could I fix that?

• Migrating My GWB Blog Over To WordPress

  Geeks With Blogs has been good to me, but there are too many tempting things about Word Press for me to stay with GWB.  Particularly their statistics features, and also I like that I can apply specific tags to my posts to make them easier to find in Google (and I never was able to get categories working on GWB). The one thing I don’t like about WordPress is I can’t seem to find a theme that stretches the Content area to take up the rest of the space on wide resolutions…..hopefully I’ll be able to overcome that obstacle soon though. For those who are curious as to how I actually moved all of my posts across, I ended up just using Live Writer to open my GWB posts, and then just changed it to publish to my WordPress blog.  This was fairly painless, but with my 27 posts it took probably about 2 hours of manual effort to do.  Most of the time WordPress was automatically able to copy the images over, but sometimes I had to save the pics from my GWB posts and then re-add them in Live Writer to my WordPress post.  I found another developers automated solution (in alpha mode), but opted to do it manually since I wanted to manually specify Categories and Tags on each post anyways.  The one thing I still have left to do is move the worthwhile comments across from the GWB posts to the new WordPress posts. The largest pain point was that with GWB I was using the Code Snippet Plugin for Live Writer for my source code snippets, and when they got transferred over to WordPress they looked horrible.  So I ended up finding a new Live Writer plugin called SyntaxHighlighter that looks even nicer on my posts If anybody knows of a nice WordPress theme that stretches the content area to fit the width of the screen, please let me know.  All of the themes I’ve found seem to have a max width set on them, so I end up with much wasted space on the left and right sides.  Since I post lots of code snippets, the more horizontal space the better! One of the key components is showing what skills members have. Question: I need to know what MAJOR game development roles are not represented in the following list, keeping in mind that many specialist roles are being condensed into more broad, generalist roles: Art Animator (Characters, creatures, props, etc.) Concept Artist (2D scenes, environments, props, silhouettes, etc.) Technical Artist (UI artists, typefaces, graphic designers, etc.) 3D Artist (Modeling, rigging, texture, lighting, etc.) Audio Composer (Scores, music, etc.) Sound Engineer (SFX, mood setting, audio implementation, etc.) Voice (Dialog, acting, etc.) Design Creative Director (Initial direction, team management, communications, etc.) Gameplay Designer (Systems, mechanics, control mapping, etc.) World Designer (Level design, aesthetics, game progression, events, etc.) Writer (Story, mythos, dialog, flavor text, etc.) Programming Engine Programming (Engine creation, scripting, physics, etc.) Graphics Engineer (Sprites, lighting, GUI, etc.) Network Engineer (LAN, multiplayer, server support, etc.) Technical Director (I don't know what a technical director would even do.) • SteamCMD can't add files to my home directory

  I'm trying to clean up the administration of some game servers I run on a Ubuntu box, part of which has been finally setting permissions properly so I can run the Steam console tool that controls updates and such. I had been running it as root using sudo, but I changed the permissions so that I can start it as a regular user rather than root. That bit seems to work fine, but now when SteamCMD actually starts, it errors with the following output ./steam.sh: line 24: /home/angleosaxon/.steampid: Permission denied Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1334262703) SteamUpdater: Error: Couldn't create directory /home/angleosaxon/Steam/package, got error 13 [ 0%] Download complete. [----] Verifying installation... unlinked 0 orphaned pipes [----] !!! Fatal Error: Steam failed to load: *SteamStartEngine(0xbfa7cfa0) failed with error 1: Failed to open logfile /home/angleosaxon/Steam/steam.log Leaving aside the question of why it wants to add this information to my home directory, why is it getting access denied errors? As I understand it, since it's being run by my account, it operates with my permissions, so it should be able to read/write from my home directory, shouldn't it? This is the command I'm using to run it: /opt/steamcmd/steam.sh "+login UserAccount \"This is not my actual password.\"" +force_install_dir $ServerDir "+app_update 215360 validate" +quit

• Grub problem - Command prompt

  Update: Thanks to all who helped. I gave up and am going to re-install. Not the end of the world, no files will be lost :-) This time will be backing up grub haha. Thanks again, I really appreciate the community's help on this. I was going along fine when the new pae kernel came down, and it had some bug where the sound was all messed up. So I used startup manager to choose the older pae kernel and rebooted. But startupmanager must have fuXXored my grub. When I re-booted, I get thrown directly into memtest and thats it. I tried to re-install grub using the live disc method that I found in many places. That changed something so I get a prompt and the message: "GNU grub version 1.99 ubuntu. Minimal BASH-like editing is supported. Type help for complete list." But then I tried the live CD fix again and now am back at the memtest... What can I do to get my system running again? UPDATE: Just to be clear,when I start up I get a blinking cursor in the top left, and the word 'ON' in the middle of the screen. Then, after a good minute or two, the memtest starts.

• external hard drive not detected after ubuntu crash [restarting machine]

  today i tried to watch movie [with vlc media player] from my external hard drive [expansion portable 500 GB], and it's play good, then pause the movie and play it again, and my Ubuntu crashed! • Facebook - Isn't this a big vulnerability risk for users? (After Password Change)

  I would like to know you opinions as programmers / developers. When I changed my Facebook password yesterday, by mistake I entered the old one and got this: Am I missing something here or this is a big potencial risk for users. In my opinion this is a problem BECAUSE it is FaceBook and is used by, well, everyone and the latest statistics show that 76.3% of the users are idiots [source:me], that is more that 3/4!! All kidding aside: Isn't this useful information for an attacker? It reveals private information about the user! It could help the attacker gain access to another site in which the user used the same password Granted, you should't use use the same password twice (but remember: 76.3%!!!) Doesn't this simply increase the surface area for attackers? It increases the chances of getting useful information at least. In a site like Facebook 1st choice for hackers and (bad) people interested in valued personal information shouldn't anything increasing the chance of a vulnerability be removed? Am I missing something? Am I being paranoid? Will 76.3% of the accounts will be hacked after this post? Thanks in advance!! • How do I restore default menu/top panel text color in Gnome Classic?

  The default text/icon color in my top panel has changed from white to a very dark grey, making my menus virtually unreadable against the black of the Ambiance theme. This includes even the login screen menu. I used Gnome Tweak to change the theme to Adwaita, but while some text has gone light grey (e.g. Date/Time), the login menu text remains dark grey, as do most icons (e.g. dropbox, wireless, battery indicator...) in the top panel after I log in. I tried deleting the top panel altogether but the option of deleting under Super + Alt + Right Click is blocked off. I tried running a panel from the terminal, but it came up in strange colors too, plus icons had moved around and some parts of the panel were opaque and other parts transparent. Deleting the panel wouldn't solve the basic problem anyway, as my login menu would still be very dark grey and unreadable against the default (black) Ambiance background. I would like to keep Ambiance but I want to reset the color to default (white) again. Can anyone help me?

• Xorg crashes ever since using Nvidia dual monitors

  Well ever since I have used dual monitors with the NVIDIA X Server Settings program my xorg process has been crashing after a while, and its generally a pretty long while of like 6 hours afterwards. Before NVIDIA changed my xorg.conf file I only had xorg crash like twice in 2 months, I can't figure out what is going on. • Is white the best base color to start with when planning to shade sprites within Unity?

  I'm looking into prototyping a game in Unity which will consist of solid square sprites / tiles. I figure I can represent different types of objects with different colors for each of the tiles in the game. I figure that I can import a single square sprite and shade it appropriately in Unity as opposed to imported squares of many different colors. My experience with adjusting the hue and saturation within Photoshop shows that white is not an easy color to change as things that are white often stay white. My testing in Unity shows that I can change the "color" of a sprite to anything other than white and the sprite is seemingly shaded appropriately, despite what I would have thought given my Photoshop experience. Since white objects do seem to take on the appropriate color shading when changed within Unity my gut tells me that this is the best base color to begin with, meaning that I can import a single white square sprite and simply adjust the color to represent different objects and object states. Is a white sprite actually the best color sprite to begin with and why does something like this work in Unity as opposed to adjusting the hue and saturation within Photoshop?

• Do you write unit tests for all the time in TDD?

  I have been designing and developing code with TDD style for a long time. What disturbs me about TDD is writing tests for code that does not contain any business logic or interesting behaviour. I know TDD is a design activity more than testing but sometimes I feel it's useless to write tests in these scenarios. For example I have a simple scenario like "When user clicks check button, it should check file's validity". For this scenario I usually start writing tests for presenter/controller class like the one below. @Test public void when_user_clicks_check_it_should_check_selected_file_validity(){ MediaService service =mock(MediaService); View view =mock(View); when(view.getSelectedFile).thenReturns("c:\\Dir\\file.avi"); MediaController controller =new MediaController(service,view); controller.check(); verify(service).check("c:\\Dir\\file.avi"); } As you can see there is no design decision or interesting code to verify behaviour. I am testing values from view passed to MediaService. I usually write but don't like these kind of tests. What do yo do about these situations ? Do you write tests for all the time ? UPDATE : I have changed the test name and code after complaints. Some users said that you should write tests for the trivial cases like this so in the future someone might add interesting behaviour. But what about “Code for today, design for tomorrow.” ? If someone, including myself, adds more interesting code in the future the test can be created for it then. Why should I do it now for the trivial cases ?

• Ubuntu server is dropping SSH connections, then not allowing me to log back on

  I have an ESX box which I have loaded with two Ubuntu Server machines. During setup, I chose no additional packages to install as I just wanted a lightweight machine for testing. The first thing I did was change the root password via sudo passwd After ESX got on my nerves through lag, I decided to install OpenSSH via apt-get install openssh-server. It did it's business, and I then opened putty and could connect in to both machines fine. The first time it connected, it asked me to add the ssh key as obviously it did not know it. Anyway, the second server is working flawlessly, but, the first seems to be giving me trouble. I was in the middle of typing a sentence when it kicked me off for no reason and when I tried to reconnect, putty gave me a warning that the ssh key had changed and it is potentially dangerous. I attempted to log in anyway and it did not work, just the standard access denied message. Using the second machine, I SSHed in to the first machine and it worked straight away, I then killed the SSH sessions (and possibly SSH server), I then reconnected via putty and I again received the security warning message, but, it allowed me to log on fine. ... I thought "glitch" and nothing more of it, but, it just happened again! I really do not understand this and was hoping someone here can help?

• Password not working for sudo ("Authentication failure")

  Before I mention anything further, DO NOT give me a response saying that terminal won't show password input. I'm AWARE of that. I'm typing my user password in (not a capslock issue), and for some reason it still says 'Authentication Failure'. Is there some other password (one I'm not aware of) I'm supposed to be using other than my user password? I've had this ubuntu before, on another hard drive and I didn't have this problem. • Option Button in Keyboard Layout > Input Sources is not pressable

  I would like to set the Caps-lock key as a Compose key, which you do, as far as I remember, by pressing the Options Button in Keyboard Layout Input Sources and then enabling the appropriate option there. That Button is not pressable though since I switched to 12.10. It did work in previous releases of Ubuntu. gnome-control-center puts out these errors, when I click on Keyboard Layout: (gnome-control-center:3645): common-cc-panel-WARNING **: Could not find current language '?\u0003C!\u007f' in the treeview (gnome-control-center:3645): common-cc-panel-WARNING **: locale '"en_US.UTF-8"' isn't valid I'm not sure if the errors are related though, maybe they are related to the "interface switching to chinese bug" which seems surprisingly widespread: Language changed to Chinese, how do I change it back? • Design in "mixed" languages: object oriented design or functional programming?

  In the past few years, the languages I like to use are becoming more and more "functional". I now use languages that are a sort of "hybrid": C#, F#, Scala. I like to design my application using classes that correspond to the domain objects, and use functional features where this makes coding easier, more coincise and safer (especially when operating on collections or when passing functions). However the two worlds "clash" when coming to design patterns. The specific example I faced recently is the Observer pattern. I want a producer to notify some other code (the "consumers/observers", say a DB storage, a logger, and so on) when an item is created or changed. I initially did it "functionally" like this: producer.foo(item => { updateItemInDb(item); insertLog(item) }) // calls the function passed as argument as an item is processed But I'm now wondering if I should use a more "OO" approach: interface IItemObserver { onNotify(Item) } class DBObserver : IItemObserver ... class LogObserver: IItemObserver ... producer.addObserver(new DBObserver) producer.addObserver(new LogObserver) producer.foo() //calls observer in a loop Which are the pro and con of the two approach? I once heard a FP guru say that design patterns are there only because of the limitations of the language, and that's why there are so few in functional languages. Maybe this could be an example of it? EDIT: In my particular scenario I don't need it, but.. how would you implement removal and addition of "observers" in the functional way? (I.e. how would you implement all the functionalities in the pattern?) Just passing a new function, for example?

  I have a WordPress blog and recently I have setup a new blog lets call the old blog as blog old and new blog as blog new. What I did is moved the content, photos, pictures and all 250 posts from blog old to blog new. Both the blog name are changed as they are pointing to different domain names! I read helpful things in this site itself at here. I will no longer use blog old, moreover I am concerned about the SEO of the blog new. The blog new is fairly new (just 24 hours and no pages have been indexed in Google). I have done the following stuff: Deleted all the post share at Facebook fan Page, Twitter profile, Google+ page and Finally deleted the fan page/Twitter, Google+ page. Edited the link backs of old blog in the blog new. The question I have is: How do I prevent duplicate content issues? Do I go straightaway and delete all the posts in blog old? Should I start sharing the blog posts in blog new? Should I submit the new site to Webmaster Tools or wait for few weeks? Every comment here is appreciated! What issues can I face relating to SEO?

• Nvidia driver installation results in resolution change to 800x600 with Xubuntu 10.04 (can't change)

  I have a 2.8 P4 and a Nvidia FX 5500 AGP graphics card. I've installed Xubuntu 10.04. It is WAY too laggy with the default o/s driver. Installing the Nvidia 173 driver, modaliases and nvidia-settings packages via synaptic package manager results in the following error message: An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. Error: Opening the cache (E::read, still have 11898251 to read but none left, E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.) This usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies. When restarting the PC the resolution drops to 800x600 (from the monitors native 1440x900). Nvidia settings cannot be changed either from the Xfce menu or Nvidia Xserver. Nvidia Xsever gives the following error message: You do not appear to be using the Nvidia X driver. Please edit your x configuration file (just run 'nvidiaxconfig' as root ) and restart X server. Also, I can't find anything in any directory called xorg.

• What are the common techniques to handle user-generated HTML modified differently by different browsers?

  I am developing a website updater. The front end uses HTML, CSS and JavaScript, and the backend uses Python. The way it works is that <p/>, <b/> and some other HTML elements can be updated by the user. To enable this, I load the webpage and, with JQuery, convert all those elements to <textarea/> elements. Once they the content of the text area is changed, I apply the change to the original elements and send it to a Python script to store the new content. The problem is that I'm finding that different browsers change the original HTML. How do you get around this issue? What Python libraries do you use? What techniques or application designs do you use to avoid or overcome this issue? The problems I found are: IE removes the quotes around class and id attributes. For example, <img class='abc'/> becomes <img class=abc/>. Firefox removes the backslash from the line breaks: <br \> becomes <br>. Some websites have very specific display technicalities, so an insertion of a simple "\n"(which IE does) can affect the display of a website. Example: changing <img class='headingpic' /><div id="maincontent"> to <img class='headingpic'/>\n <div id="maincontent"> inserts a vertical gap in IE. The things I have unsuccessfully tried to overcome these issues: Using either JQuery or Python to remove all >\n< occurences, <br> etc. But this fails because I get different patterns in IE, sometimes a ·\n, sometimes a \n···. In a Python, parse the new HTML, extract the new text/content, insert it into the old HTML so the elements and format never change, just the content. This is very difficult and seems to be overkill.
