• Installing Django/Python on IIS6

  We are currently installing the latest version of Django and Python on IIS6. We have followed the instructions on the following site: http://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/DjangoOnWindowsWithIISAndSQLServer We are receiving a 403 error when trying to access our Django application via the IIS server. We have verified the python installation on IIS6 and it is working properly. We have also verified the Django installation. Our application runs fine under the built-in Django server, but we are having difficulties getting it to run under IIS. We presume we could be getting errors from "Linking Django to PyISAPIe" section of the instructions provided on the link above. Thanks.

• Custom Application Page does not recognize tagPrefix defined in custom web.config

  I have a custom application page integrated in Centeral Administration. My application pages are placed in a subfolder in Template\Admin folder. I placed my own web.config in my subfolder and added tagPrefixes in the control section. However when I open my application page ASP.NET throws the exception that the tag SharePoint:InputFormTextBox was not recognized. What am I doing wrong? Or it doesn't work this way? What can i do to achieve this?

• How to get users to read error messages?

  If you program for a nontechnical audience, you find yourself at a high risk that users will not read your carefully worded and enlightening error messages, but just click on the first button available with a shrug of frustration. So, I'm wondering what good practices you can recommend to help users actually read your error message, instead of simply waiving it aside. Ideas I can think of would fall along the lines of: Formatting of course help; maybe a simple, short message, with a "learn more" button that leads to the longer, more detailed error message Have all error messages link to some section of the user guide (somewhat difficult to achieve) Just don't issue error messages, simply refuse to perform the task (a somewhat "Apple" way of handling user input) Edit: the audience I have in mind is a rather broad user base that doesn't use the software too often and is not captive (i.e., not an in-house software or narrow community). A more generic form of this question was asked on slashdot, so you may want to check there for some of the answers.

  I have defined alias that looks like this: Alias /pictures/sm/ /var/www/my_site/data/_active_thumbnails/ Later in the VirtualHost section have: DocumentRoot /var/www/my_site/sites/www.my_site.com/htdocs RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule ^/thumbnails/(.*)\.(jpg|JPG) /images/stg-list-img.png [PT,L] What I'm trying to do is to display /images/stg-list-img.png placeholder image only if the original image does not exist on the drive. Right now it's replacing all the images from /thumbnails/. It looks like the RewriteCond is not aware about the Alias. Is there the way to overcome it? Thanks

• Confused about this factory, as it doesn't look like an Abstract Factory nor Factory Method

  I'm looking into Guice and I've been reading its documentation recently. Reading the motivation section I don't understand the factories part, why they name it that way. To me that factory is just a wrapper for the implementing class they want it to return after calling getInstance(). public class CreditCardProcessorFactory { private static CreditCardProcessor instance; public static void setInstance(CreditCardProcessor creditCardProcessor) { instance = creditCardProcessor; } public static CreditCardProcessor getInstance() { if (instance == null) { throw new IllegalStateException("CreditCardProcessorFactory not initialized.   §3.10 section 9 says "non-class rvalues always have cv-unqualified types". That made me wonder... int foo() { return 5; } const int bar() { return 5; } void pass_int(int&& i) { std::cout << "rvalue\n"; } void pass_int(const int&& i) { std::cout << "const rvalue\n"; } int main() { pass_int(foo()); // prints "rvalue" pass_int(bar()); // prints "const rvalue" } According to the standard, there is no such thing as a const rvalue for non-class types, yet bar() prefers to bind to const int&&. Is this a compiler bug? EDIT: Apparently, this is also a const rvalue :)

• Non modal "status" form

  At the beginning of a section of C# code that could take several seconds to complete, I'd like to display a non modal form with a label that just says, "Please wait..." WaitForm myWaitForm = null; try { // if conditions suggest process will take awhile myWaitForm = new WaitForm(); myWaitForm.Show(); // do stuff } finally { if (myWaitForm != null) { myWaitForm.Hide(); myWaitForm.Dispose(); myWaitForm = null; } } The problem: the WaitForm doesn't completely display before the rest of the code ties up the thread. So I only see the frame of the form. In Delphi (my old stomping ground) I would call Application.ProcessMessages after the Show() Is there an equivalent in C#? B) Sort by will contain by employee number, date of birth , Salary , and many more C) Filter by will contain like employee on vacation, or employee terminated etc etc. Now for a single webreport I am first taking a DataSource and binding data to labels. to achieve the above webreport I have to take 40 different Datasource and I have to assign to the labels? Should I be doing this?

  In Real World Haskell, there is a section titled "Life without arrays or hash tables" where the authors suggest that list and trees are preferred in functional programming, whereas an array or a hash table might be used instead in an imperative program. This makes sense, since it's much easier to reuse part of an (immutable) list or tree when creating a new one than to do so with an array. So my questions are: Are there really significantly different usage patterns for data structures between functional and imperative programming? If so, is this a problem? What if you really do need a hash table for some application? Do you simply swallow the extra expense incurred for modifications?

• Using a checkbox input on a form to send the form data to different email addresses

  I am building a form for a client. Here is the rundown. The form will be used as a request to have a staff member contact the person filling out the form. However, there is a list of staff members that will contact them depending on what the subject matter is. So, I want to create a checkbox input section on the form with each staff person's email address attached to a corresponding checkbox. So, the person filling out the form can check only the staff people necessary for their needs. Finally, when the person clicks "submit", the form will be emailed to only the staff members who were checked in the form. I'm at a loss of how to set this up.

• TFS and code coverage for web application (MVC) assemblies not working

  I've got an MVC web application with associated controller tests that run under a TFS build as per normal. I can see the tests running and passing in the build log and they appear in the "Result details for Any CPU/Release" section of the build I also have a number of other assemblies with associated tests that are running in the same build. Tests are passing and the details are being shown in the results and logs just fine. I've enabled code coverage in the build script and the testrunconfig. The coverage is appearing for all assemblies EXCEPT the web application even though it looks like the tests have been run for it. Is there anything obvious that I have missed or some sort of work around that I need to do? I've searched around for a while and haven't found an answer. Has anyone got code coverage working for MVC web applications?

• Hashes vs Numeric id's

  When creating a web application that some how displays the display of a unique identifier for a recurring entity (videos on YouTube, or book section on a site like mine), would it be better to use a uniform length identifier like a hash or the unique key of the item in the database (1, 2, 3, etc). Besides revealing a little, what I think is immaterial, information about the internals of your app, why would using a hash be better than just using the unique id? In short: Which is better to use as a publicly displayed unique identifier - a hash value, or a unique key from the database? Edit: I'm opening up this question again because Dmitriy brought up the good point of not tying down the naming to db specific property. Will this sort of tie down prevent me from optimizing/normalizing the database in the future? The platform uses php/python with ISAM /w MySQL.

• How long should it take for someone to be able to type code from memory?

  Hi, I understand that this question could be answered with a simple sentence and that it may be viewed as subjective, however, I am a young student who is interested in pursuing a career in programming and wondered how long it took some of you to get to the level of experience you are now?. I ask this because I am currently working on building an application in Java on the Android platform and it bothers me that I am constantly having to look up how to write a certain section of code in my application such as writing to a database, or how the if loop should be structured. My question really is, how long did it take for you to become experienced enough to actually know exactly how your next line of code was going to look, before you even wrote it?

• Is `hg pull --rebase` analogous to `svn update`?

  This question assumes there's a "blessed" central repository that members of a team clone from push to when they have contributions that they want other team members to see pull from when they want to see other people's contributions. etc. If so, I would assume hg update is not analogous to svn update (why would there be two commands that do exactly the same thing?). From what I can gather, hg update more like svn revert. Is that correct?   My question is about one particular usage of static keyword. It is possible to use static keyword to cover a code block within a class which does not belong to any function. For example following code compiles: public class Test { private static final int a; static { a = 5; doSomething(a); } private static int doSomething(int x) { return (x+5); } } If you remove the static keyword it complains because the variable a is final. However it is possible to remove both final and static keywords and make it compile. It is confusing for me in both ways. How am I supposed to have a code section that does not belong to any method? How is it possible to invoke it? In general, what is the purpose of this usage? Or better, where can I find documentation about this?

• Specify IP address of WCF endpoint at runtime

  I have a bunch of remote machines all running the same WCF service over HTTP. I have a central configuration utility that needs to decide at runtime which of these to connect to. I do not want to define all the endpoints in the configuration file because this is all database driven. I naively tried this: CustomerServiceClient GetClientForIPAddress(string ipAddress) { string address = String.Format("http://{0}/customerservice.svc", ipAddress); var client = new CustomerServiceClient("?", address); return client; } where CustomerServiceClient is my service reference proxy class, but (unsurprisingly) it gave me the following error: Could not find endpoint element with name '?' and contract 'SkyWalkerCustomerService.ICustomerService' in the ServiceModel client configuration section. This might be because no configuration file was found for your application, or because no endpoint element matching this name could be found in the client element. So how do I declare an endpoint at runtime and point my service reference to it? .NET 3.5

• Is it better to have client (Javascript) processing HTML rather than C# processing HTML?

  We are in the process of building a huge site. We are contemplating on whether to do the processing of HTML at server side (ASP .Net) or at the client side. For example we have HTML files which acts like templates for the generation of tabs. Is it better for the server side to get hold of content section (div) of HTML load the appropriate values and send the updated HTML to the browser or is it better that a chunk of data is passed onto client and make Javascript do the work? • Stress Test tool for Password Protected Website

  We need to run a stress test on a password protection section of a website we host. What tool (paid or free) would be best for us to use for this? We'd like to be able to create several 'scripts' and then have the stress test simulate X number of users. Each script will have us login as a specific user and then click on some links and submit forms to simulate an actual user. Ideally the software would also create some nice data exports/charts. Server is a linux web server, but we could run this on linux or Windows so software that will run on either is fine.

• Installing Wordpress - constant PHP/MySQL extension appears missing

  I've got Win2003 w/IIS6, PHP 5 and MySQL installed. I can confirm PHP is installed correctly because I have a testMe.php that runs properly. When I run the Wordpress setup, I get informed that Your PHP installation appears to be missing the MySQL extension which is required by WordPress. But in my PHP.ini in the DYNAMIC EXTENSIONS section I have extension=php_mysql.dll extension=php_mysqli.dll I verified that mysql.dll and libmysql.dll are both in my PHP directory. I copied my libmysql.dll to the C:\Windows\System32 directory. When I try to run the initial setup for WordPress, I get this answer. I've Googled setting this up, and everything comes down to the above. I'm missing something, but none of the instructions that I've found online seem to cover whatever that is.
