  in closed solaris i knew how to do this. Edit /etc/inet/ipnodes, change /etc/defaultrouter, reboot in opensolaris there is not defaultrouter file. first thing I tried was System-admin-network switch to manual enter static address and netmask and gateway. press 'activate' "this interface cannot be activated". No error messages given. Close widget, open again. Now hangs for a minute and then closes try edit /etc/inet/ipnodes, reboot eth card not up. Network widget hangs then closes Works perfectly on DHCP

• What cable to connect Inspiron 1720 to HDMI TV?

  Hi I'm a little confused to say the least when it comes to video formats and protocols. I'd like to view my laptop output on my HD TV. The TV has HDMI, S-Video, and RCA inputs. My laptop has a VGA female port on the side for driving a 2nd monitor, and an S-VHS output at the back. No, it has no DVI, which I've heard is a poor decision from DELL, and even poorer decision on my part to buy it. Can I get true HD output from this to my TV? What cable do I need, or would I need a converter? Any other suggestions are also welcome, such as how to get something close to HD on my TV. Thanks! Bernhard

• Debian wheezy keyboard shortcut for both opening and closing a terminal

  I recently installed tilda and I would like to open it and close with the same keyboard shortcut. I wrote little something in bash that closes tilda if it is open and opens tilda when there is no such a process in ps -ef. It looks like this: a=ps -ef | fgrep -i tilda | cut -d' ' -f4 | head -1;if [ $a ] ; then kill $a; else tilda; fi It seems to be working (at least partially) when I commit this in terminal, but when I assign this command to specific keyboard shortcut (for example alt+1) it does nothing. Any suggestions? btw. is it possible to assign this shortcut for button '`' like in Quake?

• What would be better in my case - apache, nginx or lighttpd ?

  Hey everybody, I'm writing a php site that's expected to get about 200-300 concurrent users browsing it. When initializing the application will load about 30 php classes, some 10 maybe 15 images and a couple of css files. So my question is what else can I do (except optimizing my code and using apc/eaccelerator for php) to get as close as possible to those numbers of concurrent users ? Currently we haven't chosen a server for the site to be hosted on but most probably it'll be a VPS Dual core + 2 or maybe 4gb ram. Is it possible for such a server to handle that load ? Also how could I test it myself and be sure that it'll be able to handle it ? Thanks in advance, Me

• Which web browser support running multiple sessions simultaneously?

  basically, I want to group my tabs by categories and then split them to different sessios(winows). For example, I can have one windows which contains all the tabs that are work related, and some other windows that are for news, everyday use, hobbies, entertainment, etc. So I can load these sessions/windows independently whenever I want. More importanly, I need the browser to be able to manage these sessions separately, for example, when I close one window(session), it should be able to autosave it without affecting any other sessions. I think this requirement is quite simple. But somehow, neither firefox(with session manager addon) nor opera support this. so which browser actually supports this?

  Whenever I open a pdf file with PDF X-Change Viewer it locks up the source pdf file to edits. Is there a way to open the pdf (with PDF X-Change Viewer) so that it doesn't lock-up the source file --- perhaps as a shell command with an option? The background: I use LaTeX to edit my pdf files, and preview the result with PDF X-Change Viewer. I must first close PDF X-Change Viewer before I can preview any changes I make in the LaTeX source. It would be nice if PDF X-Change Viewer did not lock-up the pdf source so that I could modify it without first closing PDF X-Change Viewer.

• Outlook connected to exchange does not send email

  I have multiple machines with Outlook 2010 connected to RackSpace hosted exchange server. Everything works fine, but emails send after a while since outlook started will not leave the outbox. Clicking Send & Receive will display the progress bar at 100% completed with no errors, but is not really finishing. The Cancel All button is still active. The emails in the outbox are bold & italic, so ready to be send. When I close outlook and start it again, the mails are sent immediately without problems. I have tried the following: Checked if there are any third party addins: only Microsoft Add ins Checked if the virus scanner is blocking anything, but McAfee is not doing this. Checked and Repaired the .ost file Increased the server time-out from 30 seconds to 60 seconds Nothing helped. Any suggestions?

  If I want to send someone a piece of my screen this is what I currently do: PrtScr or Alt+PrtScr Open Paint.NET Paste the screen shot Make a selection Crop image to selection Save image to some location - and remember it! Go to some image hosting site (there are plenty of them in the days of Twitter) Click their "Browse" button Browse for the image if I happened to remember the location where I stored it :) Upload the image and obtain the link which I can share This is simply too many steps. I don't usually mind doing steps 1 to 5 but especially steps 6 and 9 are annoying. Jing is pretty close to what I'm looking for but I find their horrible URLs unbearable. If there was something with similar functionality but better or pluggable hosting, that would be great.

• Excel graph: turn stacked bar chart into part bullet chart

  I've a simple data file that has one column of actuals and another of target against categories. I would like to turn the TARGET figure into a 'Bullet marker'. I've seen it done on other graphs but I'm struggling with the category column being overwritten with the xy axis values. Or if I get close to doing it then the xy markers are not central. I've checked out Peltier but his examples are based on even more comlicated data than mine, so the steps required didn't seem to match up. Help greatly appreciated. Thanks Mike. • After closing the ssh terminal, the thin server is down

  I have a rails project run on the thin server(1.3.1) on a ubuntu server. I ssh to the server and start thin with command 'thin start -C config/thin.yml', following the thin.yml, port: 3000 log: log/thin.log timeout: 30 chdir: /home/byht/56platform/dev/tracker environment: production servers: 1 daemonize: true After thin starts successfully, I visit the project and it works well. Then, I close the terminal, I can also visit the pages that have been visited, but when I visit the pages that not been visited before closing ssh terminal, a "500" error appears on the page. I didn't find the error messages in the log file. I have tried start thin with nohup and sudo, but they are useless. I sign in the ubuntu server locally, then the problem disappears. But I need sign in the server to stat thin with ssh when I'm home.

  This question relates to my ACER laptop running Windows VISTA. Currently when I close the lid of my laptop the laptop does not power down, however when I open the lid it does. When looking at the power settings it is set to power down when closing the lid. The trigger to this seems to be the lid being opened not being closed. I seem to recall this behaviour changing when I installed Windows Media centre. Any ideas on how I can get the power down to work on the lid closing. thanks

• Convert Public Folders to a PST

  Alrighty so I've got a tricky one. I currently have a public folder database (edb & stm) residing on an Exchange 2003 folder. I need to export them into a pst file or otherwise make it so that I can manually get the data in it to end-users. I can not use the export feature built into Outlook as some of the folder refer to another server which doen't have the data. Trying only results in the Outlook Client hanging for close to an hour before giving an error about not finding the data. So this will need to be a server side export. There are a few tools out there that seem to be available for converting edb & stm files to psts but they are quite expensive. Does anybody have any ideas?

• wifi routers and concurrent devices

  We have a Linksys WRT54G WiFi router in our office which was working great when we had 5-6 folks. Now on peak days we have 10-15 people, each with a computer, smartphone, etc, and an ooma VOIP device. On average 1-2 times a day I need to go hard reboot the router, and sometimes the border router (Cox-supplied device). I assume this is just because the router cant handle this many concurrent users. So my question is can these consumer routers handle this kind of load? If not, would adding more devices solve the problem, and how close proximity can I put 2 routers without having interference problems (our office area is not that big physically)?

• Exchange 2003 automated mailbox size report

  I have a question if I may. I have been looking for a while for something that can report user mailbox sizes and percentage used against their quota or something that can warn me when a mailbox is getting close to the quota. I know the user receives a warning but how can I send that same warning a centralized mailbox so we can be pro-active in our support. Either a script or an application that can do this will be helpful. Unfortunately my scripting skills are useless for something this complex. Any ideas of what can be used will be appreciated.

• Multiple thunderbird Icons in System Tray(Windows 7) & TaskBar

  Is this some new "feature" for thunderbird 8? When I start thunderbird it starts by opening thunderbird. Once it is loading thunderbird it loads another 6 thunderbirds. What happened to the one window? When I minimize to tray I got 4 of thunderbird icons. When closing one of them all of the close. My other windows 7(32 bit not 64 bit) only have one instance.

• Open a screen session inside a certain user on boot Ubuntu Server Linux

  I currently have a private server which I test my web apps on which runs Ubuntu Server 10.04 I also host a few game servers (rather than having wasted CPU time :-D) for some of my friends. These game servers I run in the game user account and each one has it's own screen session (so friends can ssh in and reboot the game server etc...). For example screen -R l4d2 runs ./start in the L4D2 folder. However if I reboot the server (which I have to do occasionally) all these sessions close and I have to manually create all the screen sessions and run the required games within them. Is there a way to set these screen sessions as Daemons or services or just boot on server start so they restart themselves on server reboot? • Run python script on server over ssh session in the background persistantly

  I got an account from my professor for our universities CUDA server for running some tests. I am connecting via ssh over terminal. The thing is, as I close the terminal the server also seems to kill the running script. As I reconnect it has stopped. No it is not possible that the script already terminated since those test runs should take a few hours even on those machine.. Can anybody help me here? • Putty freezes at random when logging into a remote machine in another continent

  I have to ssh to a remote machine in Europe from Asia every day for my work. But Putty freezes sometimes at totally random times and I have no choice but to close and re-open a new ssh session. It's frustrating especially when I'm editing something or executing a long running program. I know the question really doesn't have much details ('cause nothing seems to be wrong with the network at all). Has anyone experienced this sort of issue with Putty and had resolved it?   I have an Excel document that is stored on a SharePoint Server, which I always have open on my computer in read-only mode because I need to refer to it. Every so often, in order to get the latest changes, I have to close down the file and reload it again. Are there any options within Excel 2007 which allow me to simply refresh a document I have open in read-only mode to the latest version on the server? Better still, is there a way where this could be done dynamically, without me having to hit refresh?

For example, after a visitor downloaded 100MB, any additional requests would be dropped or rejected for the next 24 hours. Is it possible to accomplish this using iptables alone? The connbytes, connlimit, hashlimit, quota, and recent options all look promising, but the man page plays its cards close to the vest (e.g., "quota - Implements network quotas by decrementing a byte counter with each packet. --quota bytes The quota in bytes."). Would like to avoid using a proxy (like Squid) if possible.

• monitor just what's going on -on a firewall

  I have this little snapgear firewall. It's a little purpose built box running a custom linux, SH4 processor @240 Mhz, 64MB of ram. Basically how close we are to capacity is a mystery to me. I know I can run top and see the status of all the processes, but how can I see just how much of the processor is going to passing data... and how to estimate when I'm going to need to upgrade, and by tweaking iptables rules, how does that help/hurt the processor. suggestions?
