  • How can I make a career in Formal Methods programming in USA?

    I've found that my (USA) professors recoil with a near-disgust when I ask them about how to pursue a career in Formal Methods programming. They say, "Oh, that stuff! That stuff is anal. You don't need that European POS to get a job." I'm sure I'll get a job without it, but Formal Methods interests me so much that I bet I'd like to make a career of it. I'd like to learn about Formal Methods at an American University and then work in that field here. I've found that even professors at more important universities than mine don't seem to welcome Formal Methods. Almost all FM research project webpages are semi-abandoned and moldering. Europe is where the action seems to be for this. Can anyone suggest a plan of attack, and along the way explain the antipathy to Formal Methods in the US? I'm a sophomore at a public university in the South.

  • Modifying generator.yml views in Symfony

    Hey! I'm currently working on a web app written in Symfony. I'm supposed to add an "export to CSV" feature in the backend/administration part of the app for some modules. In the list view, there should be an "Export" button which should provide the user with a csv file of the elements that are displayed (considering filtering criteria). I've created a method in the actions class of the module that takes a comma separated list of ids and generates the CSV, but I'm not really sure how to add the link to it in the view. The problem is that the view doesn't exist anywhere, it's generated on the fly from the data in the generator.yml configuration file.   • best way to switch between secure and unsecure connection without bugging the user

    The problem I am trying to tackle is simple. I have two pages - the first is a registration page, I take in a few fields from the user, once they submit it takes them to another page that processes the data, stores it to a database, and if successful, gives a confirmation message. Here is my issue - the data from the user is sensitive - as in, I'm using an https connection to ensure no eavesdropping. After that is sent to the database, I'd like on the confirmation page to do some nifty things like Google Maps navigation (this is for a time reservation application). The problem is by using the Google Maps api, I'd be linking to items through a unsecure source, which in turn prompts the user with a nasty warning message. I've browsed around, Google has an alternative to enterprise clients, but it costs $10,000 a year. What I am hoping is to find a workaround - use a secure connection to take in the data, and after it is processed, bring them to a page that isn't secure and allows me to utilize the Google Maps API. If any of you have a Netflix account you can see exactly what I would like to do when you sign-in, it is a secure page, which then takes you to your account / queue, on an unsecure page. Any suggestions? Thanks!

  • making my player sprite land on top of my platform sprite

    Hi, in my XNA game(im fairly new to XNA by the way) i would like to have my player sprite land on top of a platform. i have a player sprite class that inherits from my regular sprite class, and the regular sprite class for basic non playable sprite stuff such as boxes, background stuff, and platforms. However, i am unsure how to implement a way to make my player sprite land on a platform. My player Sprite can jump and move around, but i dont know where and how to check to see if it is on top of my platform sprite. My player sprites jump method is here private void Jump() { if (mCurrentState != State.Jumping) { mCurrentState = State.Jumping; mStartingPosition = Position; mDirection.Y = MOVE_UP; mSpeed = new Vector2(jumpSpeed, jumpSpeed); } } mStartingPosition is player sprites starting position of the jump, and Position is the player sprites current position. I would think that my code for checking to see whether my player sprite is on top of my platform sprite. I am unsure how to reference my platform sprite inside of the playersprite class and inside of the jump method. i think it should be something like this //platformSprite.CollisonBox would be the rectangle around the platform, but im not //sure how to check to see if player.Position is touching any point //on platformSprite.CollisionBox if(player.Position == platformSprite.CollisionBox) { player.mDirection = 0; } Again im pretty new to programming and XNA, and some of this logic i dont quite understand so any help on any of it would be greatly appreciated:D Thanks

  • CSS Centering Issue - Div Centering appx 15px too far to the right

    I have a theme that I'm modifying for my site. I currently have it live on my test domain while I tinker with it before launch. http://www.networkgenius.org The #content-wrap div is centering, but too far to the right for some reason. I've absolutely no idea why it's doing this, especially since everything else is centering properly. What is the problem? I did add a 15px padding to the content-wrap area as I've changed the body's background color to the grey that you see and obviously didn't want the text pressed right up against the edges of the wrapper.   • URL Slugs: Redirects or 404s?

    Some sites, like here at SO, allow 'bogus' slugs in the URL. Before implementing URL slugs on my site, I have a question of 'best practices'... Given a structure like example.com/123/article-slug-here/, if my site allows bogus slugs by querying on the ID - Should I ... just do a redirect to the appropriate/canonical URL (verifying the slug, and redirecting in case of a mismatch)? -or- return a 404, since technically example.com/123/this-article-s-u-x doesn't exist?

    Developing a community site where everyone can post text, I'm looking for a markup filter: What is not part of the markup must be escaped (htmlspecialchars()) as it is. Should turn URL-s automatically into links Should support some form of basic markups (bold, image, url, pre, list) Should have a simple parser, that turns user input text into HTML Content on the site is public to everyone, XSS must not allowed to happen. What do you suggest? What markup language in the first place? BBCode? Wiki? Markdown? Are there any complete API-s with good examples? PHP is available on the server side. If there is a WYSIWYG-like texarea in addition (like here on SO) that would be a fantastic bonus!

  • How to make a good programming interview?

    I am doing interviews with from time to time to recruit some not bad people. And I really think I AM NOT doing to correct Job. I work in a company when We have to do a lot o DB programming, .NET programming, Java programming, so we need people who are open minded and not focused on a particular tech. Afterall language is a notation, You have to understand what is going under the hood. I ask people about their project, ask them some coding questions (believe me a SQL question involving a CROSS JOIN is hard), let them write some code, ask them about oo design, ask them how they update their knowledge, and stay up to date, do they have FUN when they code (at least sometimes). Hell I even give them a coding solution for home (3 hours max) to see how they think and code. And yet my hit rate at hiring junior member (those who live over the initial 3 months) is just about 33%. So my question, how do YOU make the good interviews, because I think my hit rate is to low? Do you have any best-practices(should be at least 60-70%)? p.s. And i noticed that: the best programmers are lazy, but motivated, just being lazy is not enough:) But people who write the best code are attentive to details:)

In short, I'd like to serve a different flavor of the page whenever the _escaped_fragment_ parameter is found in the URL. What should I modify in order for the server to serve something else (a static page, or a page dynamically generated through a headless browser like HTML Unit)? I'm guessing it could be the web.xml file, but I'm not sure. (Note: I thought of checking the Showcase app provided with the GWT SDK, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to support serving static files on _escaped_fragment_ and it doesn't use the #! token..)

I've seen a few different techniques used to try combat this such as short sessions and virtual queues but they dont seem to have much effect.     Hi folks, I'm making a very simple 2D RPG in Java. My goal is to do this in as simple code as possible. Stripped down to basics, my class structure at the moment is like this: Physical objects have an x and y dimension. Roaming objects are physical objects that can move(). Humanoid objects are roaming objects that have inventories of GameItems. The Player is a singleton humanoid object that can hire up to 4 NPC Humanoids to join his or her party, and do other actions, such as fight non-humanoid objects. NPC Humanoids can be hired by the Player object to join his or her party, and once hired can fight for the Player. So far I have given the Player class a "party" ArrayList of NPC Humanoids, and the NPC Humanoids class a "hired" Boolean. However, my fight method is clunky, using an if to check the party size before implementing combat, e.g. public class Player extends Humanoids { private ArrayList<Humanoids> party; // GETTERS AND SETTERS for party here //... public void fightEnemy(Enemy eneObj) { if (this.getParty().size() == 0) // Do combat without party issues else if (this.getParty().size() == 1) // Do combat with party of 1 else if (this.getParty().size() == 2) // Do combat with party of 2 // etc. My question is, thinking in object oriented design, am I on the right track to do this in as simple code as possible? Is there a better way?

  • Machine restricted login access

    I am working on a project that has a requirement such that login details can only be accessed from one machine at one time. For example, if I grant you access to my website and you login from your home machine, the system will store this settings in a cookie/database. Now if you try the same login details on your work machine or any other machine, the system will not let you log into the system. The login will now only work from home machine. Any suggestions on how to achieve this would be helpful. Any resources you can point me towards would also be appreciated.

  • BS in CS. Are specializations worth it?

I was thinking about getting two of them since they are sort of on the way to my degree anyway. They are Software Engineering and Programming Languages and Compilers . Would these specializations actually be useful in finding a job? Would employers even care about them?

  • Plugin or module for filtering/sorting a large amount of data?

    I have a rather large amount of data (100 MB or so), that I would like to present to a user. The format of the data is similar to the following... Date              Location      Log File          Link 03/21/2010   San Diego   some_log.txt   http://somelink.com etc My problem is that I would like to have some nice/slick way for the user to filter the information. Unfortunately, because there is so much of it, the jQuery Table Filter plugin does not work (crashes the browser). I was wondering if there is a nice solution or if I have to simply do the filtering on the server end and have a bland pull-down menu / select-box interface for the client to use.

  • Automatic web form testing/filling

    I recently became lead on getting an inordinate amount of testing done in a very short period of time. We have many different web forms, using custom (Telerik) controls that need to be tested for proper data validation and sensible handling of the data. Some of the forms are several pages long with 30-80 different controls for data entry. I am looking for a software solution (that is free) that would allow me to automate the process of filling in these forms by designing a script, or using a UI. The other requirement is that I can't use any browsers but IE6 (terrible, I know). I have previously used AutoHotkey to great success for automatic Windows form testing, since Autohotkey's API allows you to directly reference controls on the Windows form. However Autohotkey does not have similar support for web forms (everything is just one big "InternetExplorer" control). While I would prefer that I could script some variance in the data to help serialize each test, it's not necessary, as I could go back through and manually edit a field or two (plus "break" whatever control I'm currently testing) to serialize each test. If you've ever seen Spawner: http://forge.mysql.com/projects/project.php?id=214 It's almost exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for (Spawner generates dummy SQL data, as opposed to dummy webform data) - but I won't be picky, I've got a really short deadline to meet and had this thrust in my lap just today. ;) Edit1: One of the challenges of just using Autohotkey to simulate keyboard input (tabbing through controls) is that some controls don't currently have tab index (bug), and some controls cause a page reload after modification, resulting in inconsistent control focus (tabbing screwed up). Our application makes heavy use of page reloads to populate fields (select a location, it auto-populates a city, for example).

  • Autocomplete Error Question - Ruby on Rails

    I have built a very simple blog application using Ruby on Rails. New to both Ruby and Rails so excuse the stupid questions. I currently have two tables that relate to this question. I have a Post table and a Tag table. Basically I set it up such that Post has_many :tags and Tag belongs_to :post. I am using AJAX to process and display the tags in the show view of the post. I installed the auto_complete plugin and I am getting an error when I enter the letters in the text_field_with_auto_complete for tag creation. My suspicion is this is because the form is a remote_form_for or something I am doing wrong in the routes.rb.
