• Ubuntu 9.10 X Stuck in restart loop - I think...

  Trying out Ubuntu, installation went fine - upgraded to the proprietary nVidia drivers but on restart I get a login prompt and the screen is flashing really fast almost as if Xserver is trying to start and failing, I can type when the screen isn't in a "flash" as it were and it's so fast and random it's hard to even type a login name without it missing some characters - this makes typing a password (i.e. not being able to see which characters made it or not) very hard. I can log back into the live cd and alter my settings - but I can't even find out how to stop X stop starting on boot; Looks like they've moved everything around :-p I'd like to: Stop X from crashing and going insane (if it is actually Xserver) Know how to stop X from starting on bootup, Looks like interactive boot is also off by default now Update: A temporary work around seems to be enabling ssh and just connecting to the box over the network - ssh seems to work fine :-p Cheers, Chris

• Sony Vaio dead keyboard

  I have strange problem with my almost new laptop. Aftear I leave it turned on for some hours and back to use it, it was printing something like ^[[2~ on the screen and I cannot stop it. After rebooting it did not show any activity. After few hours I managed to turn it on by hiting random keys at keyboard. I starts that way but I have to use external keyboard to type anything. When I randomly stroke the keys when is turned on, it sometimes print that unrecognised characters. It works the same way at linux and windows (ubuntu, windows 7). What can be the reason it started to work so strange and is there anyway to fix it without sending it to warranty and waiting few weeks? :/ I dont remember to make it wet, but they may be something like cigaretes ashes in it, I could not remember...

• Windows 7 randomly installs an "Unknown Device"

  Rarely (several days to weeks between occurrences,) and seemingly at random, I get a balloon notification from Windows 7 (x64 SP1 Home Premium) that it is installing hardware for me. However, no new hardware has been installed or plugged in! When I click the balloon it doesn't give me any useful information: Looking in the event log, I find this entry: Event ID: 20001 Source: UserPnp Task Category: 7005 Message: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\usb.inf_amd64_neutral_153b489118ee37b8\usb.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\6&3AF9A177&0&0060&&02 with the following status: 0x0. It appears to be USB related. My motherboard has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 controllers. My keyboard and mouse are plugged into the 2.0 slots and the data/recharge cable for a tablet (but not the tablet itself) was plugged in to the 3.0 slot. No other USB devices have been attached for several days/reboots. Why is Windows doing this?

• Are you aware of any client-side malware that sends lots of junk requests for .gifs?

  I am getting dozens of 404 errors on my site that are requests for gif's with apparently random names, like 4273uaqa.gif and 5pwowlag.gif. I see that most of them are coming from one user. I assume something is happening in the background on her machine without her knowledge. I assume it's a malware thing on the client. Has anyone seen this behavior before? Would love to advise my customer that s/he has an issue. I'd also like to stop getting these 404 reports. :)

• Ubuntu and mysql server. Something isnt allowing me to connect

  I have a question about mysql settings http://serverfault.com/questions/94054/remote-connections-and-mysql-on-ubuntu/94088#94088 now i want to figure out why i cannot connect. I made sure bind-address was commented out. I can ping the server within the VM but i cannot ping it from within the VM using mysqladmin --protocol=tcp --host=self_ip ping. I also followed along and check if my ports were open and they look like they are. I setup samba on that VM and can access that with no problem as well. It looks like ubuntu does not have a firewall either (i figured this out before) so i am stumped why the server isnt allowing my connection. Apparently the config file works on another person side http://www.pastie.org/742545 I am using Ubuntu 6.06 LTS just because of 'support' reasons. So hopefully this will be 'easy'?

• ICQ offline messages (do not show up)

  Hi there, I have a weird problem with offline messages: I use Adium on 2 Macs (home and office) and Beejive (iPhone) for connecting to ICQ and other protocols. When someone sends me an offline messages I expect them to show up the next time I login with any of my 3 devices. But thats not the case. Recently some show up at the office, some at home and some on my iPhone – couldnt figure out any logic behind it, seems rather random. I thought for a while that it depends on the last device i have been logged in with. But thats not the case either. A friend can send me offline Messages during the weekend, i can login with my Mac at home or iPhone, yet in some cases it only shows up when logging in from office. Weird. It really freaks me out – and no, i can't make 'em go to jabber or the like. Anyone experiencing a similar problem?

• Not enough storage is available to process this command

  I am getting this error on almost all of the operations on a Windows 7 pro 32 bit machine. By operations I mean anything I do. Update a repo from subversion. Access a local IIS Site. Copy a big folder. Run an installer.and sometime if I try again. It get solved. I think there is something wrong wit windows7 . I searched around and found posts suggesting to increase IRPStackSize value in registry I did that no Luck. I am using Microsoft Security Essentials Version: 1.0.1961.0 as my antivirus package Once this errors starts popping up. I have to restart and then in after some random time. It starts showing up again. Any help is appreciated. I am losing lot of my time in restarting my system or retrying again and again.

• Computer Randomly Restarts (no crash dump)

  Hey everyone this is my first time here, so, my computer got pulled out of his place the other day by accident and it never got back to working decently ever again. I just stopped using it because everytime i power it on, it restarts. Some times it doesn't even reach the desktop, others it even allows me to run a game or something. It gets really random. Today i was trying my last attempt before sending it to fix and it ran fine for 40 minutes but as i tried to run a game the screen got really messeud up full of colorful lines and stuff and i'm assuming it had to do with the graphics card. Altho, my question is, what can be causing all this restart thingie? Can it be just the Power Supply failing me and hence, not giving enough power to make the graphic card go for instance? • Laptop connected to external monitor results in desktop overflow

  I have a laptop (MSi FX600) connected to an external monitor (Toshiba 19AV500U) with the screen resolution set to the monitors recommended setting of 1440x900. The problem is the desktop is overflowing the display, meaning all edges of the desktop are cut off, so I cannot see the close, minimize buttons on the top and I only see half of the taskbar at the bottom. I have tried many different resolutions but none of them solve the problem. I have had this same problem when connecting to other external monitors in the past, but not all of them, it seems to be fairly random. I have tried to find a way to manually adjust the resolution but I cannot see a way to do this in my settings. All windows updates are up to date, I am connecting through an HDMI cable and I have it set to display only on the external monitor and not extended desktop.

  I have some email network data in Excel as a edgelist meaning I have columns Vertex1, Vertex2, and then N columns of properties of that edge like how many emails were sent from one person to another. For each row in the data, Vertex1 is the source of a message, and Vertex2 is the target, so edges are directed. Here's some sample data Vertex1 Vertex2 nMessages Bob Cindy 12 Cindy Bob 3 Bob Mike 11 Cindy Mike 1 I'm trying to calculate a geometric mean of the form gm = sqrt[(# of edges ij)*(# of edges ji)] So gm for Bob and Cindy is gm = sqrt[(messages from Bob to Cindy)*(messages from Cindy to Bob)] or sqrt(12*3) = 6. Is there a way to make that a formula in Excel?

• Why does Task Scheduler NOT re-run successfully completed tasks

  I am using Task Scheduler on Windows 2008 x64. I have 3 tasks, running every night on different times without overlapping. It works for some days - usually 2-3 up to 10 (it's really random), then it stops running the tasks. When I look at the history, I see that the tasks completed successfully. In the UI, the column "Next Run Time" stays empty. The tasks are set to run on background; the account for running them is a domain one - it is valid and enabled. When I check with Process Explorer, there are no left-over processes associated with my tasks. I am completely baffled at what's going on.

• Brand new Lenovo u410 heats up around touchpad

  My Lenovo u410 started heating around the right palm rest minutes after I unpacked it! I am devastated, because I bought this for programming, and it's impossible to type on this for extended periods with the surface getting so hot. I haven't run any serious programs on it yet, so the processor has been pretty much idle. I've been Googling this problem, and found only one person who had this issue too. Is this is a defect in the product? Why aren't many others getting this problem? I bought it via newegg.com and as per their policy you can't return a product once you've opened it. Specs: Core i5, 6 GB RAM, 750 GB harddisk. Running Windows 8.

• How to update Sharepoint 2010 user profile for user whose account name has changed in AD?

  We have an issue with User Profile Sync in SharePoint 2010 when the following happens: A new user is added to AD (ie DOMAIN\jdoh) The user is synched successfully to SharePoint Time passes The user's account name is changed in AD (ie because it was originally misspelled: DOMAIN\jdoe) The user is re-synced to SharePoint The behavior appears to be that the account name is not changed. In the above example, accountname will continue to be DOMAIN\jdoh in SharePoint, though other properties are synced correctly- I would assume by SID. This means that the users' my profile and mysite links still refer to the 'old' name (ie Person.aspx?accountname=Domain\jdoh). What steps should be taken to fix this in SharePoint when an account name is changed in AD?

Each night, random hosts from the Internet are probing them for various vulnerabilities in php, phpadmin, horde, mysqladmin, etc. Is there a way (apache plugin?) to slow down the rate of attack? For SSH, I have a rate limiting rule on the firewall, which does not allow more than three connections per minute. But I don't want to rate limit all HTTP access, only the access that returns 404s. Is there such an apache module?

• HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color M451dn Phantom Print Jobs

  Scenario: Multiple printers hooked up to a printer server (2008r2) including this HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color M451dn. All machines that are using the printer are based on Windows 7 Enterprise x64. Problem: Every couple of days the users who frequent this printer let me know that a few dozen pages with random characters down one side of the paper print out. This happens usually during the evening when no one is around to send print jobs to it. What I have done: Provided the below screen shot of the printer log with what I assume is the print jobs in question. I have looked into the printer driver compatibility and found no issues. Question: Is there a known issue with this printer or similar printers, and is there a solution that people are familiar with when they see multiple pages of gibberish printing out?

• Get source and destination of outbound traffic in pfSense

  I'm looking at the traffic graph in pfSense (Version 1.2.2), which we're using as a router / NAT / ect on our network. Recently, I'm seeing a sudden, constant spike of 15 - 30kbps traffic outbound, that is unusual for our network (normally its below 2kbps, we're mostly all inbound traffic) Is there any way to determine what the source of this traffic is, or where it's going? (Just an internal IP address for source, and external IP address for destination would be all I need) I've already tried switching the traffic graph to 'LAN' and watching the host list on the right side, but it seems ... flakey. The numbers it shows seem to fade in and out at random, and the values never add up to anywhere near the graph values. • Spawn phone call from EC2 alerts

  I have a system setup on AWS/EC2, it currently is using their CloudWatch alert system. The problem is this sends just to email, when ideally I would like this to be making a phone call and/or sending text messages to certain phone numbers when an alert fires (Note that I do not need the phone call to actually say anything, just call the person). We are trying to solve the problem that Amazon alerts are only useful if people are checking their email, which isnt always the case because all server problems love to happen at 4am on saturday... Please respond with any possible solutions/ideas, ideally I do not want to implement an entire monitoring system (IE: Nagios) on top of everything to handle this.

• WSS_Content contains?

  WSS 3.0:Windows2003 I have a content database that keeps growing for the name of simply, "WSS_Content" This database is aside from all the other content databases that are linked to an web application, but located in the same directory. I count 5 CONTENT databases on this directory, but only 4 web applications (excluding the centraladmin). Trouble is it keeps growing in size and I need to know what it is and why its growing. Is this a default database of some kind? Where and why would it grow? I recently found, through Central Administration, that one of my sites has a content database name of "WSS_Content_(random numbers and letters)" whereas, the other content databases would have a name like "WSS_Content_(WebApplicationName)" What gives?

• View another persons calendar details in Outlook 2010

  I know how to view somebody else's calendar - there are 100 walk-throughs like this one on Google. However, this feature has changed in Outlook 2010, and you no longer get prompted for rights to view another person's calendar, and Outlook just displays their "Free/Busy" information, which doesn't help me. I'd like to request permissions to view the details of their appointments, but I can't find any place to request permissions on their calendar - Outlook 2010 just gives me "Free/Busy" rights and then appears to have no option to request additional rights. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

• Mighty Mouse is jumping around on screen

  Hi there, I have a really annoying problem with my mighty mouse since a couple of weeks now. When moving my mouse (mightymouse) sometimes it jumps (about once in 30minutes) directly to a (propably) random spot of my screen. I cleaned the mightymouse several times and there is definately no hair or the like, and the desk is not the problem as well - I have the same problem with my other mighty mouse at home. Since I don't have any other mouse i couldn't test whether this relates to the mighty mouse or the mouse in general. Has anyone experienced such issues as well? Is there a solution? Problem The PDF should have a watermark that includes the person's name and contact information. Question What software meets the following criteria: Applies encrypted, invisible watermarks to a PDF Open Source Platform independent (Linux, Windows) Fast (marks a 200 page PDF in under 1 second) Batch processing (exclusively command-line driven) Collusion-attack resistant Non-fragile (e.g., PDF - EPS - PDF still contains the watermark) Well documented (shows example usages) Ideas & Resources Some thoughts and findings: Natural language processing (NLP) watermarks. Apply steganography on a randomly selected image. http://openstego.sourceforge.net/cmdline.html The problem with NLP is that grammatical errors can be introduced. The problem with steganography is that the images are sourced from an image cache, and so recreating that cache with watermarked images will impart a delay when generating the PDF (I could just delete one image from the cache, but that's not an elegant solution).   This is a theoretical problem I am curious about. Websites are hosted on servers. Servers can be taken offline. Is it possible to host a website in the 'ether' of the Internet -- not on a server -- so that it cannot be taken down? One example, is that the website is hosted on other websites, like a parasite. Another is that it is assembled through storing pieces on DNS machines, routers, etc., so that it get assembled on the fly. The purpose is that this website could live forever because no one person can remove it. The answers I am looking for are plausible idea/approaches on technically how this could be built.
