• fastest (low latency) method for Inter Process Communication between Java and C/C++

  Hello, I have a Java app, connecting through TCP socket to a "server" developed in C/C++. both app & server are running on the same machine, a Solaris box (but we're considering migrating to Linux eventually). type of data exchanged is simple messages (login, login ACK, then client asks for something, server replies). each message is around 300 bytes long. Currently we're using Sockets, and all is OK, however I'm looking for a faster way to exchange data (lower latency), using IPC methods. I've been researching the net and came up with references to the following technologies: - shared memory - pipes - queues but I couldn't find proper analysis of their respective performances, neither how to implement them in both JAVA and C/C++ (so that they can talk to each other), except maybe pipes that I could imagine how to do. can anyone comment about performances & feasibility of each method in this context ? any pointer / link to useful implementation information ? thanks for your help

• Problem consuming Exchange Web Service 2010 with jax-ws metro

  I am trying to consume the Exchange 2010 Web Service interface using JAX-WS. I'm using JAX-WS 2.2 RI (Metro 2.0). 2.1 exhibited the same problem. I am running into trouble with Exchange, which returns "HTTP/1.1 415 Cannot process the message because the content type 'text/xml;charset=utf-8' was not the expected type 'text/xml; charset=utf-8'." as a reponse (2.1 quoted the charset value, otherwise same response). Apparently I need to dictate the exact Content-type header for Exchange to be happy. Is there a way for me to do this without forcing me to manually rebuild the dependency? I currently rely on published maven artifacts, and would like to continue doing this if at all possible. The consuming process is a regular J2SE app, with no containers in sight. I have control of the application and can add pretty much anything required to the applications scope, but can not add out-of-process items like proxy servers. The client classes were generated from local WSDL, but the charset specification is derived from constants declared in the jaxws RI implementation, not the generated code. The resulting HTTP transport is thus handled by the standard http/https client from Sun JRE5 or JRE6.

• Avoiding GC thrashing with WSE 3.0 MTOM service

  For historical reasons, I have some WSE 3.0 web services that I cannot upgrade to WCF on the server side yet (it is also a substantial amount of work to do so). These web services are being used for file transfers from client to server, using MTOM encoding. This can also not be changed in the short term, for reasons of compatibility. Secondly, they are being called from both Java and .NET, and therefore need to be cross-platform, hence MTOM. How it works is that an "upload" WebMethod is called by the client, sending up a chunk of data at a time, since files being transferred could potentially be gigabytes in size. However, due to not being able to control parts of the stack before the WebMethod is invoked, I cannot control the memory usage patterns of the web service. The problem I am running into is for file sizes from 50MB or so onwards, performance is absolutely killed because of GC, since it appears that WSE 3.0 buffers each chunk received from the client in a new byte[] array, and by the time we've done 50MB we're spending 20-30% of time doing GC. I've played with various chunk sizes, from 16k to 2MB, with no real great difference in results. Smaller chunks are killed by the latency involved with round-tripping, and larger chunks just postpone the slowdown until GC kicks in. Any bright ideas on cutting down on the garbage created by WSE? Can I plug into the pipeline somehow and jury-rig something that has access to the client's request stream and streams it to the WebMethod? I'm aware that it is possible to "stream" responses to the client using WSE (albeit very ugly), but this problem is with requests from the client.

  Is it possible to get a method's return value in the Visual Studio debugger, even if that value isn't assigned to a local variable? For example, I'm debugging the following code: public string Foo(int valueIn) { if (valueIn > 100) return Proxy.Bar(valueIn); else return "Not enough"; } Since I'm not setting any local variables in Foo, and assuming I'm not setting a break point in whatever's calling Foo, is there a way to see what the return value is if I have a breakpoint inside of Foo (or another way)? I don't have much experience with the Autos or Intermediate windows, so I'm not sure if those are even a valid option or not.

• How to subclass a specific jqueryui widget method ?

  Since I updated jQueryUI to 1.8 I found a couple of issues in our implementations and I could fix it myself without waiting for a fix on their end if I could find out how to subclass a specific method of the datepicker widget so I call the parent code and then execute my code. I was reading on $.widget but I just can't wrap my head around how that is suppose to work. I tried something like this: $.widget("ui.datepicker", { _showDatepicker: function(input) { alert('Yo'); $.datepicker.prototype._showDatepicker.apply(this,arguments); alert('Hey!'); } }); And all sorts of other variations and beging to think I just don't understand the 'extendability' of jQueryUI or it just can't be done. • UIAlertView crashing on undocumented method

  Our app has been crashing with a frequency of roughly 1 in 1,500 launches due to a bug that is proving elusive. The relevant portion of the stack trace is included. It's being fired as a callback so I have no reference for where it's occurring in my own code. It looks like what's going on is there is a UIViewAnimationState object that is calling UIAlertView's private method (_popoutAnimationDidStop:finished:). Only problem is, it appears the UIAlertView has been dealloced by this point. I don't do anything weird with alert views. I throw them up, and I wait for user input. They are all shown before being released. Anyone encountered this? At this point, I'm leaning toward it being an Apple bug. • Looking for the most painless non-RDBMS storage method in C#

  I'm writing a simple program that will run entirely client-side. (Desktop programming? do people still do that?) and I need a simple way to store trivial amounts of data in a structured form, but really don't see any need to use a database system. What's more, some of the data needs to be serialized and passed around to different users, like some kind of "file" or perhaps a "document". (has anyone ever done that before?) So, I've looked at using .Net DataSets, LINQ, direct XML manipulation, and they all seem like they would get the job done, but I would like to know before I dive into any of them if there's one method that is generally regarded as easier to code than others. As I said, the amount of data to be stored is trivial, even if one hundred people all used the same machine we're not talking about more than 10 MB, so performance is not as large a concern as is codeability/maintainability. • Finding the order of method calls in Eclipse

  Suppose I have a big program that consists of hundreds of methods in it. And according to the nature of input the program flow is getting changed. Think I want to make a change to the original flow. And it is big hassle to find call hierarchy/ references and understand the flow. Do I have any solution for this within Eclipse? Or a plugin? As an example, I just need a Log of method names that is in order of time. Then I don't need to worry about the methods that are not relevant with my "given input" Update : Using debug mode in eclipse or adding print messages are not feasible. The program is sooooo big. :)

• Creating Mock object of Interface with type-hint in method fails on PHPUnit

  I created the following interface: <?php interface Action { public function execute(\requests\Request $request, array $params); } Then I try to make a Mock object of this interface with PHPUnit 3.4, but I get the following error: Fatal error: Declaration of Mock_Action_b389c0b1::execute() must be compatible with that of Action::execute() in D:\Xampp\xampp\php\PEAR\PHPUnit\Framework\TestCase.php(1121) : eval()'d code on line 2 I looked through the stack trace I got from PHPUnit and found that it creates a Mock object that implements the interface Action, but creates the execute method in the following way: <?php public function execute($request, array $params) As you can see, PHPUnit takes over the array type-hint, but forgets about \requests\Request. Which obviously leads to an error. Does anyone knows a workaround for this error? I also tried it without namespaces, but I still get the same error.

• Object doesn't support property or method 'transformNode' in Internet Explorer 10 (Windows 8)

  I am having some JavaScript issues that seem to only occur in Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8 (IE 7, 8, and 9 all work fine). The basic jist of what I am doing is getting XML and XSL from a web service and then transforming them in JavaScript to render on the page using the Sys.Net.XMLDOM object. XMLDOM = Sys.Net.XMLDOM; var xsl = // XSL gotten from somewhere else var xmlString = // XML gotten from somewhere else as a string... var xml = new XMLDOM(xmlString); var content = xml.transformNode(xsl); When I use the above code in IE 10, I get: Object doesn't support property or method 'transformNode' Any ideas on why Internet Explorer 10 is doing this? EDIT I have also tried this: xmldoc = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.DOMDocument"); xmldoc.async = false; xmldoc.load(xml); xsldoc = new ActiveXObject("Msxml2.DOMDocument"); xsldoc.async = false; xsldoc.load(xsl); var content = xmldoc.transformNode(xsldoc); Which works in all previous versions of IE, but in IE 10 I get: Reference to undeclared namespace prefix: 'atom'.

  I'm writing the code for a controller method and I need to use it to send an email. I'm trying to use heredoc syntax to fill in the email body, however, the closing tag doesn't seem to be recognized. $this->email = new Email(); $this->email->from = 'Automated Email'; $this->email->to = '[email protected]'; $this->email->subject = 'A new user has registered'; $this->email->body = <<<EOF Hello, a new user has registered. EOF; $this->email->send(); Everything from the opening <<< EOF down (till the end of the file) is displayed as if it was in quotes. Can anyone see why this is not working? Any advice appreciated. The reason I'm resubmitting is because SO considers the original question 'answered', even though I got no meaningful upvoted answer. I opened a uservoice submission about this problem. The reason I reposted is so StackOverflow consider the original question answered, so it doesn't show up on the 'unanswered questions' tab. Which distributed lock service would you use? Requirements are: A mutual exclusion (lock) that can be seen from different processes/machines lock...release semantics Automatic lock release after a certain timeout - if lock holder dies, it will automatically be freed after X seconds Java implementation Easy deployment - must not require complicated deployment beyond either Netapp, MySql or GigaSpaces. Must play well with those products (especially GigaSpaces - this is why TerraCotta was ruled out). Nice to have: .Net implementation If it's free: Deadlock detection / mitigation I'm not interested in answers like "it can be done over a database", or "it can be done over JavaSpaces" - I know. Relevant answers should only contain a ready, out-of-the-box, proven implementation.

• Advantage of using a static member function instead of an equivalent non-static member function?

  I was wondering whether there's any advantages to using a static member function when there is a non-static equivalent. Will it result in faster execution (because of not having to care about all of the member variables), or maybe less use of memory (because of not being included in all instances)? Basically, the function I'm looking at is an utility function to rotate an integer array representing pixel colours an arbitrary number of degrees around an arbitrary centre point. It is placed in my abstract Bullet base class, since only the bullets will be using it and I didn't want the overhead of calling it in some utility class. It's a bit too long and used in every single derived bullet class, making it probably not a good idea to inline. How would you suggest I define this function? As a static member function of Bullet, of a non-static member function of Bullet, or maybe not as a member of Bullet but defined outside of the class in Bullet.h? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

• Explaining training method for AdaBoost algorithm

  Hi, I'm trying to understand the Haar feature method used for the training step in the AdaBoost algorithm. I don't understand the math that well so I'd appreciate more of a conceptual answer (as much as possible, anyway). Basically, what does it do? How do you choose positive and negative sets for what you want to select? Can it be generalized? What I mean by that is, can you choose it to find any kind of feature that you want no matter what the background is? So, for example, if I want to find some kind of circular blob - can I do that? I've also read that it is used on small patches for the images around the possible feature - does that mean you have to manually select that image patch or can it be automated to process the entire image? Is there matlab code for the training step? Thanks for any help...

  i would like to have your opinion in a project i am currently working on. class Product has_many :orders end class Order attr_accessor :deliverable # to contain temporary data on how many items can be delivered for this order belongs_to :product end somehow i want to have Order.all_deliverable that will calculate the Product's quantity, subtract from list of Orders until the Product is empty or there is no more Order for this Product to illustrate Product A, quantity: 20 Product B, quantity: 0 Order 1, require Product A, quantity: 12 Order 2, require Product B, quantity: 10 Order 3, require Product A, quantity: 100 so if i call Order.all_deliverable, it will give Order 1, deliverable:12 Order 3, deliverable: 8 #(20-12) i have been thinking on using named_scope, but i think the logic will be too complex to be put in a named_scope. Any suggestion? the pseudo code for all_deliverable will be something like this: go to each orders find the remaining quantity for specific product deduct the product to max amount of order, if product is not enough, add the maximum product add to the order end From what i read around in the web, named_scope deal mostly like find and have not many method calling and looping.
