• Does the Win XP/7 dual boot "missing restore points" problem apply to systems with separate hard disks for each O/S?

  I'm in the process of installing Windows 7/64 on a system with Windows XP/32 on it. During my research, I read about a problem that occurs in the dual boot scenario where Windows XP deletes Windows 7's restore points when it accesses the Windows 7 volume: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926185 I found a workaround but it seems pretty painful since it appears to involve using the registry to make the Windows 7 volume appear invisible or "offline" to Windows XP, making sharing disk data between the two O/S annoying since you have to use something like an external storage device to get it done: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/127417-system-restore-points-stop-xp-dual-boot-delete.html I was wondering if this problem only occurs with systems that have both O/S installed on the same physical hard drive (in different partitions)? • Oracle: FRM-41211 Error Message when starting a Report from Oracle Forms (64 Bit Windows Server)

  After installing Oracle Forms and Reports 6.0 (Patch 18) on a Windows 2008 64 Bit server we get the following error when we try to start a report from Forms. "FRM-41211 integration error: ssl failure running another product" The problem is reproducable on another server using the same Windows OS. One of the proposed solutions (extending the REPORTS60_PATH) we have already tried but that did not help solving our problem. Another tip has been to shorten the content of the path variable before installing Oracle Forms and Reports. We will try this later on another server. Any other tips or solutions for this error would be very much appreciated.

• Using watch to run a shell script - but the script goes defunct

  So I want to keep an eye on my network connectivity so I can make a report for my ISP. (seems like the modem goes out for about 30-60 seconds about once a day) So I copied this handy little script http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/simple-linux-and-unix-system-monitoring-with-ping-command-and-scripts.html And an running it with watch -n 15 ./ping-test.sh I have been testing it by pulling the plug on my modem. The first time watch runs the script after the network goes out it runs fine (sends some email) and then goes defunct. Once networking is restored the script "finishes" and then watch runs it again. So I'm getting mail for when the network goes down, but not how long it was down for. If I run the script straight from the command line it runs (emails) and then exits. Any ideas why? How can I get the script to keep running once the network is down?

• how do you set the admin password on openldap 2.4

  I am getting started with openLdap 2.4 and am having a bit of trouble, all the examples I see seem to refer to previous versions which used the text config file slapd.conf but from what I see on discussions about v2.4, this has been deprecated. I thought prehaps I needed to add a user, and log in as them but when I try and run an ldapadd command, I get a prompt to enter a password: Enter LDAP Password: ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49) Notes: I installed openldap server via yum (in fedora 15), and have installed phpldapadminbut also can try things on the command line if anyone has suggestions. After installing and starting I get the following response from a search: # ldapsearch -x -b '' -s base '(objectclass=*)' namingContexts # extended LDIF # LDAPv3 # base <> with scope baseObject # filter: (objectclass=*) # requesting: namingContexts dn: namingContexts: dc=my-domain,dc=com # search result search: 2 result: 0 Success # numResponses: 2 # numEntries: 1 I am glad to remove and reinstall the server if that helps, can anyone provide a link to tips that works for version 2.4 for a new setup?

• Edirol UA-25 driver on Windows 8 Preview

  I've installed Windows 8 developer preview on a laptop and everything is working apart from my external sound card. The sound card in question is this one, and I've tried downloading and installing the Window 7 drivers from here but no joy so far. As per the instructions I remove the USB cable from the port. I then run setup.exe and (which I have set to run in Windows 7 compatibility mode). It starts doing it's stuff then says "Please insert the USB cable and wait"......that's where things stop! Nothing happens. I don't even here the "ding-dong" of the USB device being recoginised. Obviously I realise that the drivers are for windows 7 and not 8, but was hoping that someone would be able to crowbar it to work!!! Any tips appreciated. Thanks

  I have a server with multiple IP addresses associated with it. I'm trying to run a node.js web server (which I do not want to run as root), using only one of those ip addresses (it would be very bad if the traffic from all the ip addresses were forwarded). Through searching superuser, it looked like this could be possible with iptables: How to setting up iptables for traffic fowarding on port 80 from specific sources iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 80 --source 212.333.111.222 -j REDIRECT --to-port 9020 However, I do not understand why eth0 is needed. According to: http://blog.softlayer.com/2011/iptables-tips-and-tricks-port-redirection/ this could be done with: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 2525 -j REDIRECT --to-ports 25 What is the correct way of forwarding traffic from a single ip on port 80, lets say 111.111.111.111:80 to another port on the same server, lets say 111.111.111.111:8765? thanks for your help!

• MySQL is killing the server IO.

  I manage a fairly large/busy vBulletin forums (~2-3k requests per second, running on gigenet cloud), the database is ~ 10 GB (~9 milion posts, ~60 queries per second), lately MySQL have been grinding the disk like there's no tomorrow according to iotop and slowing the site. The last idea I can think of is using replication, but I'm not sure how much that would help and worried about database sync. I'm out of ideas, any tips on how to improve the situation would be highly appreciated. Specs : Debian Lenny 64bit ~12Ghz (6 cores) CPU, 7520gb RAM, 160gb disk. Kernel : 2.6.32-4-amd64 mysqld Ver 5.1.54-0.dotdeb.0 for debian-linux-gnu on x86_64 ((Debian)) Other software: vBulletin 3.8.4 memcached 1.2.2 PHP 5.3.5-0.dotdeb.0 (fpm-fcgi) (built: Jan 7 2011 00:07:27) lighttpd/1.4.28 (ssl) - a light and fast webserver PHP and vBulletin are configured to use memcached.   Recently upgraded Ubuntu home server from 8.04 client to 10.04 server and reinstalled all services therein. • CPU's on Hyper-V host system is just idling, even though VM's are at full throttle

  Hello, I have a server that is running Windows 2008 64 bit Hyper-V, with 8 gigs of RAM and Intel Xeon X3440 @ 2.53 Ghz, which gives me 8 logical cores in the performance monitor on the host system. I have set up three Virtual Machines, all running Windows 2008 32 bit. Build server, running Team City Staging server SQL Server, running SQL Server 2005 These three machines are running very sluggishly, they are at 100% cpu even though the host system is barely using any cpu at all, typically below 10% total. Could anyone please give some tips as to the best setup for CPU allocating? Should I have set each server to have two cores, or should I increase this number above the total number of cores on the host? What is a good number to set on the Virtual Machine Reserve and Virtual Machine Limit? Is 8 gigs of physical RAM insufficient for 3 VM's? Thanks for reading. :)

• Tomato OS: "memory exhausted" running vi .... how to solve?

  I have set up tomato (shibby) on an asus RT-N66U router. It works great. I loaded up a few pieces, like transmission and optware. I can run vi, but when I run vi it fails with a "memory exhausted" error, and the terminal session hangs. For reference: If I simply start "vi" it runs fine. But if I specify vi I get the memory exhausted error, even if the file I am opening is just a couple of hundred bytes in size (like fstab). I discovered that my swap partition was not properly set up, so I did that. • I just got a linode VPS a week ago and I've been flagged for SSH scanning

  I got a 32-bit Debian VPS from http://linode.com and I really haven't done any sort of advanced configuration for securing it ( port 22; password enabled ). It seems somehow there is ssh scanning going on from my IP, I'm being flagged as this is against the TOS. I've been SSHing only from my home Comcast ISP which I run Linux on. Is this a common thing when getting a new vps? Are there any standard security configuration tips? I'm quite confused as to how my machine has been accused of this ssh scanning.

• Troubleshooting server performance with a hosted server?

  We are in a tough spot, we have a hosted server with the following specs: OS: Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 64bit Processor: Intel Xeon X7550 @ 2GHz (8 processors) RAM: 16GB The file system is on a SAN or NAS (not sure). We are seeing very odd issues where a user will open a 25MB .xslb file and it takes literally 60-120 seconds sometimes. The server is just dog slow for excel. Resources are not being pegged, CPU never jumps up, plenty of RAM... it's just oddly slow. Our host has been looking at the issue for several weeks with not much to show for it. Is there a utility I can run myself that will help trackdown our issue? I have found Server Performance Advisor V1.0 Any experience in using it? Our host is ultimately responsible for fixing this, but we are going on 1 month and our users are losing patience. Any tips would be helpful.

• Different color prompts for different machines when using terminal/ssh?

  I have 5 machines I constantly ssh into to do work. Its getting increasingly frustrating when I am issuing wrong commands on wrong boxes. Luckily I havent done anything bad yet. I wanted to know if there is any hack which I can hardcode which will display my prompt in different colors based on the machine I am ssh into? Such as blue for desktop1, purple for laptop, red for server etc? Is this possible? Currently I am using this command export PS1="\e[0;31m[\u@\h \W]\$ \e[m " taken from here http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/bash-shell-change-the-color-of-my-shell-prompt-under-linux-or-unix/ but it obviously doesnt work across ssh. Also, if you have any other cool bash tips for helping me ease my sight will be wonderful. • Pinnacle Studio 14 Importer crashes on Windows 7 x64

  Pinnacle Studio 14 Importer crashes on Windows 7 x64, thus I'm unable to import videos from my camcorder. I've Googled around and it seems to be a problem with x64 support in the program, but there is no info if it can somehow be remedied with Compatibility settings, XP mode. Further Googling got me this link, and none of the tips in site it links help. I've got no idea what ObjectDoct Plus 2 is (no a program or service installed by that name) which he claims causes the problem. Is that ObjectDoct critical to Pinnacle Studio and how to get rid of it (or any other advice how to make Studio 14 work on x64). UPDATE: 1) XP mode doesn't help as it doesn't handle Firewire, which is how my Canon HV20 must be connected to transfer HDV from tape. 2) I don't have that ObjectDock installed. 3) I don't wanna re-buy PS15 just to get this solved as PS14 should be able to do it.

• How to fix error 1330 (invalid digital signature) when installing "The Rosetta Stone"

  I bought an older version of this software from a friend and the Rosetta Stone support hasn't been of much use. When installing, at the end of the process I get an error from the installer that says something along the lines of: Error 1330. A file that is required cannot be installed because the cabinet file [file.cab] has an invalid digital signature. This isn't the first time I've had such an error, some time ago I was unable to install a game I bought because of the same thing. I extracted the cab file itself just to see what it was and it's just an archive of icons and things like that, so it's not even like I'm missing out on much :/ Any advice/tips on how to work around this error would be appreciated e.g. if it's possible to make the installer ignore digital signatures. Running Windows 7.

• Changing location of ClamAV logging files

  I've run into a weird problem with ClamAV that I have been unable to resolve, due to a incredibly non-informative error message. I've installed ClamAV via aptitude on an Ubuntu box (ClamAV 0.96.5/13202 according to the system) up on EC2 and it is 100% stock. We have an additional drive mounted under /mnt where we put all our log files. When I start it up with the log files in the default location, it runs just fine. However, if I change the configuration file from /var/log/clamav/clamav.log to /mnt/clamav/clamav.log I get the error ERROR: Can't open /mnt/clamav/clamav.log in append mode (check permissions!). ERROR: Can't initialize the internal logger It's the same file with the same permissions on it, just in a different location. Any thoughts or tips on how to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

  We have a windows 2003 terminal server running 2X application load balancign that is hosting a client's application that is accessed by around 50 users. Each user has there own database. The database is a file based database. The application is developed under Delphi so I think the database may be BDE based. As you can imagine, there is probably quite a lot of disk i/o. Here are some of the perfmon settings. Logged in users (average) 20 - 25 CPU Utilization (average) 80 - 100% Disk Queue Length (average) 1.6 % Disk time (average) 111 Page faults/sec (average) 1400 The application takes on average about a minute to load up. As usual, the budget is tight. Is there basic windows performance tuning tips that people can recommend to improve things before we fork out on more RAM etc. Server is a 2.8GHz Xeon with 3GB of RAM.

  I'm looking for suggestions on mailing list software to use on an existing server running Postfix/Procmail. Something relatively simple. requirements: 1 list, < 50 subscribers list members dumped in a certain file by a script (being pulled from LDAP or MySQL on another box) Handles MIME, images, etc. Moderation features No subscription/unsubscription - just goes by the file or database. Mailman is far too heavy-weight, and doesn't seem to play (easily) with Postfix/Procmail. I'm currently using a PHP script that just receives mail as a user, reads a list of members from a serialized array (file dumped on box via cron on the machine with the MySQL database containing members) and re-mails it to everyone. Unfortunately, we now need moderation capabilities, and I don't quite feel like adding that to the PHP script if there's already something out there that does it. Thanks for any tips. -Jason

• Cisco Secure ACS 4.2 + TACACS+ - installed together or?

  I'm tasked with installing Cisco Secure ACS (4.2 as its windows based). Do you install TACACS.net or something similar with ACS or does ACS facilitate the TACACS+ authentication? I can get my device to authenticate against a tacacs.net installation without much trouble but can't seem to figure out how one plugs ACS in, per se. I've installed ACS on the same server (is this my problem?) but no matter what I do I can only get my TACACS+ users to authenticate. Any helps/tips would be greatly appreciated!

• Getting triple-tap for Gyration Media Center remote working in Windows shell

  I have this Gyration remote which, out of the box, does not support triple-tap for text entry outside of Media Center; only numbers can be entered in the Windows shell. Gyration have a patch that supposedly allows this, but it hasn't worked for me. I'm not alone in this regard it seems though. I've seem some discussion on removing and reinstalling USB devices to get this working, but nothing I'd really trust not to screw something else up. Does anyone have any tips for getting this functionality working properly?
