• Can the overuse of custom taglibs disrupt the outsourcing of html designers?

  Yesterday me and a friend were talking about the overuse of custom taglibs! We create taglibs for everything! We create taglibs in order to wrap jQuery UI elements (tabs, button, etc), and other plugins elements as well. We often wrap them together in a single component. We use taglibs in a point that we almost have no pure html within the body tag. Our question is: is this a healthy habit??? Imagine two situations: 1) We hire an html designer and have the cost of a month for him to learn all this stuff. 2) We want to outsource the html development but no company would get our taglib library to learn, OR it become more expensive. We love taglibs as its been a lovely shortcut for javascipt development as we write it only once. What would be the best practices in this sense, and what would you suggest? We are looking for a future-proof solution (or an argument that agrees with ours).

  I just developed my first non-trivial android app. It was a complete nightmare. I came up with an idea, build the app, changed my idea, and implemented a lot of input from others on new features. All in all my app took 10 times longer than I think that it should have, it is almost impossible to look the source code and tell what's going on with the classes, and may or may not have unused methods that I'll never be able to find... So I would like an opinion from those of you with experience on how to plan out my designs for the future. I created a flow chart (pencil drawn) of a plan: I would like constructive criticism.

• iPhone, JQTouch and HTML5 audio tags

  I am having an issue with JQTouch (latest beta) and html5 audio tags on 'sub pages' - the audio tag works before any page transitions are done, and cease to work afterward. For example: http://richardprice.dyndns.ws/test.html and http://richardprice.dyndns.ws/test2.html are identical other than I swap the "current" class between the two divs - all the audio tags play the same mp3. On test.html the audio tag on the initial page works, but when you switch to Page 2 the audio tag on that page does not (and sometimes results in a browser crash). Switch back to Page 1 and the audio tag on that page has ceased to work. test2.html is the same test but with the initial pages reversed, and the same thing happens - Page 2 (now the initial page) plays the audio, Page 1 does not, and switching back to Page 2 results in the audio no longer working. Thoughts?

• Agile Executives

  Over the years, I have experienced many different styles of software development. In the early days, most of the development was Waterfall development. In the last few years, I’ve become an advocate of Scrum. As I talked about last month, many people have misconceptions about what Scrum really is. The reason why we do Scrum at Veracity is because of the difference it makes in the life of the team doing Scrum. Software is for people, and happy motivated people will build better software. However, not all executives understand Scrum and how to get the information from development teams that use Scrum. I think that these executives need a support system for managing Agile teams. Historical Software Management When Henry Ford pioneered the assembly line, I doubt he realized the impact he’d have on Management through the ages. Historically, management was about managing the process of building things. The people were just cogs in that process. Like all cogs, they were replaceable. Unfortunately, most of the software industry followed this same style of management. Many of today’s senior managers learned how to manage companies before software was a significant influence on how the company did business. Software development is a very creative process, but too many managers have treated it like an assembly line. Idea’s go in, working software comes out, and we just have to figure out how to make sure that the ideas going in are perfect, then the software will be perfect. Lean Manufacturing In the manufacturing industry, Lean manufacturing has revolutionized Henry Ford’s assembly line. Derived from the Toyota process, Lean places emphasis on always providing value for the customer. Anything the customer wouldn’t be willing to pay for is wasteful. Agile is based on similar principles. We’re building software for people, and anything that isn’t useful to them doesn’t add value. Waterfall development would have teams build reams and reams of documentation about how the software should work. Agile development dispenses with this work because excessive documentation doesn’t add value. Instead, teams focus on building documentation only when it truly adds value to the customer. Many other Agile principals are similar. Playing Catch-up Just like in the manufacturing industry, many managers in the software industry have yet to understand the value of the principles of Lean and Agile. They think they can wrap the uncertainties of software development up in a nice little package and then just execute, usually followed by failure. They spend a great deal of time and money trying to exactly predict the future. That expenditure of time and money doesn’t add value to the customer. Managers that understand that Agile know that there is a better way. They will instead focus on the priorities of the near term in detail, and leave the future to take care of itself. They have very detailed two week plans with less detailed quarterly plans. These plans are guided by a general corporate strategy that doesn’t focus on the exact implementation details. These managers also think in smaller features rather than large functionality. This adds a great deal of value to customers, since the features that matter most are the ones that the team focuses on in the near term and then are able to deliver to the customers that are paying for them. Agile managers also realize that stale software is very costly. They know that keeping the technology in their software current is much less expensive and risky than large rewrites that occur infrequently and schedule time in each release for refactoring of the existing software. Agile Executives Even though Agile is a better way, I’ve still seen failures using the Agile process. While some of these failures can be attributed to the team, most of them are caused by managers, not the team. Managers fail to understand what Agile is, how it works, and how to get the information that they need to make good business decisions. I think this is a shame. • WiX custom action with DTF... quite confused...

  Okay, I have decided the only way I can do what I want to do with WiX (thanks to an old installer I didn't write that I now have to upgrade) is with some CUSTOM ACTIONS. Basically, I need to back up a file before the RemoveExistingProducts and restore that file again after RemoveExistingProducts. I think this is what's called a "type 2 custom action." The sequencing I think I understand, however, what I don't understand is first of all how I pass data to my C# action (the directory the file is in from the WiX) and how to reference my C# (DTF?) action with the Binary and CustomAction tags. Also, does all this need to be in a tag? All the examples show it that way. • TableAdapter to return ONLY selected columns? (VS2008)

  (VS2008) I'm trying to configure a TableAdapter in a Typed DataSet to return only a certain subset of columns from the main schema of the table on which it is based, but it always returns the entire schema (all columns) with blank values in the columns I have omitted. The TableAdpater has the default Fill and GetData() methods that come from the wizard, which contain every column in the table, which is fine. I then added a new parameterized query method called GetActiveJobsByCustNo(CustNo), and I only included a few columns in the SQL query that I actually want to be in this table view. But, again, it returns all the columns in the master table schema, with empty values for the columns I omitted. The reason I am wanting this, is so I can just get a few columns back to use that table view with AutoGenerateColumns in an ASP.NET GridView. With it giving me back EVERY column i nthe schema, my presentation GridView contains way more columns that I want to show th user. And, I want to avoid have to declare the columns in the GridView.

• Algorithms to trim leading zeroes from a SQL field?

  I just came across the interesting problem of trying to trim the leading zeroes from a non-numeric field in SQL. (Since it can contain characters, it can't just be converted to a number and then back.) This is what we ended up using: SELECT REPLACE(LTRIM(REPLACE(fieldWithLeadingZeroes,'0',' ')),' ','0') It replaces the zeroes with spaces, left trims it, and then puts the zeroes back in. I thought this was a very clever and interesting way to do it, although not so readable if you've never come across it before. Are there any clearer ways to do this? Any more efficient ways to do this? Or any other ways to do this period? I was intrigued by this problem and would be interested to see any methods of getting around it.

I need it to work when you login and press "Remember me on this computer" I'm not sure how to set it up to actually remember your login and keep you logged in when you come back to the app. Is there a way to 'save' the state of the application when you quite it and come back to what you were doing?   This past Saturday, I presented "Performance Tuning with Traces" at SQL Saturday #47 in Phoenix, Arizona.  You can download my slide deck and supporting files here. This is the same presentation that I did in September at SQL Saturday #55 in San Diego, however I focused less on my custom server-side trace tool and more on the steps that I take to troubleshoot a production performance problem which often includes server-side tracing.  If any of my blog readers attended the presentation, I'd love to hear your feedback.  I'm specifically interested in hearing constructive criticism.  Speaking in front of people is not something that comes naturally to me.  I plan on presenting in the future, so feedback on how I can do a better job would be very helpful.  My number one problem is I talk too fast!

• Dual Boot Ubuntu 12.04 on a Thinkpad T420 but keep recovery partition

  I have a Thinkpad T420 which runs on Windows 7 Pro and I would like to install Ubuntu 12.04 on it via Dual Boot. But the thing is, I'd like to keep the Thinkvantage Recovery Partition. I've been researching and found this: Install Ubuntu on ThinkPad, recovery section must remain intact and http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Rescue_and_Recovery But the information doesn't seem to be updated for for my situation (the second link indicates that it won't work with Windows 7). Just wonderin' if anyone already has experience doing this? I could create recovery CD/DVD's but I'll be more happy i can keep recovery partition and boot information on the hard drive functional (for future resale purposes). Any Ideas?

Each comment can have a List of replies which are also type Comment. Now it is very easy for me to delete the original comment and get the updated list back. All I need to do after delete is this. allComments = myEJB.getAllComments(); //This will query the db and return updated list But I am having problem when trying to delete replies and getting the updated list back. So here is how I delete the replies. Inside my managed bean I have //Before invoke this method, I have the value of originalFeed, and deletedFeed set. //These original comments are display inside a p:dataTable X, and the replies are //displayed inside p:dataTable Y which is inside X. • Windows Phone 7 dev: C# or silverlight for a simple app?

  I'm about to hire a programmer to develop Windows Phone 7 apps. The current app that shall be developed is quite simple. The app will download content from a Web-API. There are two lists to select content. There is a single item content page. Users can rate the content and upload photos. The screens will be produced by our artist. I am pretty sure that most of the available programmers haven't touched WP7 development yet. Now the questions are: What technology is suitable for this kind of app? What technology requires less research, learning and production time? Do you already have experience of limitations of silverlight compared to C#? (I am also thinking of future projects) My guess is that silverlight programmers are more experienced in UI programming than C# coders. Do you feel the same way?

• Spring Transaction Manager

  Hi. I have a j2ee application running on spring framework. I am implementing a transaction manager with AOP. It works fine. When an exception occurs in my method it is detected by my AOP configuration and rolls back the changes in the DB. But the problem is the code where you expect the error should not be surrounded with try-catch. When I suround it with try-catch it won't roll-back. But I need to do some stuffs like logging whenever there are errors and the only place I can think of placing it is in the catch block.

If you feel this question is off-topic, please leave a comment explaining why or open a question on Meta.AU. How will Qt 5.0 be packaged for Ubuntu when it is released? Currently, the name of the package for installing the Qt 4.8 core libraries is: libqt4-core Will the equivalent package for the next version of Qt (5.0) be named libqt5-core? If not, what will the package be named? Will the existing Qt 4.8 libraries coexist with the Qt 5.0 equivalents for the foreseeable future or will they be removed? The Qt 5.0 beta 2 PPA contains a lot of packages - few of which seem to correspond with existing package names. If someone can provide me with a link to a policy outlining the Qt 5.0 migration plan, that would be awesome.

• How do I restore the privacy pane of the system settings?

  Checking out screenshots of the system settings in Ubuntu 12.10, it seems that I am missing a few. When I open up my settings, I cannot see Privacy, Backup, and Management Service. Also, nothing comes up when I search the Dash for these words. In a previous edition of Ubuntu, I purged Ubuntu One (with sudo apt-get purge ubuntuone-client python-ubuntuone-storage* ubuntuone-couch ubuntuone-installer) and appropriately, I cannot see the Ubuntu One icon. I've also previously purged unity-lens-music Perhaps I purged some metapackage that removed the others? In any case, how do I restore the privacy pane (as well as the other icons)? Also, any suggestions for what I did to remove the packages in the first place (and hence how to avoid this problem in the future)?

• Is reference to bug/issue in commit message considered good practice?

  I'm working on a project where we have the source control set up to automatically write notes in the bug tracker. We simply write the bug issue ID in the commit message and the commit message is added as a note to the bug tracker. I can see only a few downsides for this practice. If sometime in the future the source code gets separated from the bug tracking software (or the reported bugs/issues are somehow lost). Or when someone is looking in the history of commits but doesn't have access to our bug tracker. My question is if having a bug/issue reference in the commit message is considered good practice? Are there some other downsides?

• jQuery Autocomplete losing text on AutoPostBack

  I have a jQuery Autocomplete field on an ASP.Net Webform and everything has been working great until now. I also have a DropDownList that I have a need to fire onSelectedIndexChanged with AutoPostBack. When I changed my code to do the AutoPostBack, the text field that has the jQuery AutoComplete on it comes back blank. However, if I look at the source of the page, the text is in the text field. If I now post the form, the page will send back a blank field. My Google-Fu is weak on this one, as I could not come up with any workaround for it. Has anyone had any issues like this with the Autocomplete field getting blanked out on an AutoPostBack, and how did you get around it? I can post code if it's really necessary, but I'd need to sanitize a lot of it before I could due to company policy.

• Why is the event object different coming from jquery bind vs. addEventListener

  Why is it when I use the jQuery bind the event object I get back is different from the event object I get back using addEventListener? The event object resulting from this jQuery bind does not have the targetTouches array (among other things) but the event from the addEventListener does. • EasyXDM passing data issue

  I'm using rpc with XDM, and I can send simple data back and forth easily between child and parent window. But it seems to be limited to simple strings and numbers. The demos on the site only use numbers. When I try to send a json ecoded string, I get a cross domain error. When I use cors, I can make ajax requests fine, but I can't display the child page in the iframe, because the data is returned and not rendered. My question is, how can I render an iframe, and pass complex data back and forth. Or maybe I am doing something wrong?

• SearchBar in iPhone Application

  I have an application for iPhone which requires a search page to search a perticular location. I have created the search view and the main view also. But I'm facing problem when i'm trying to bring up the search view and also when trying to go back to the previous page with the selected cell content.My application is a Tab Bar Application. What My application need is just like the built in clock application in iPhone. When we try to add a new location a search page comes up and after searching the selected item goes back to the previous page. Looking forward for any kind of help Joy

  I'm fading out a Bitmap in AS3 by repeatedly applying a ColorTransform every frame to its BitmapData; _bitmap.colorTransform(_bitmap.rect, new ColorTransform(1, 1, 1, .9, 0, 0, 0, 1)); When applying the apparent reverse to fade it back in I get a discoloured image. _bitmap.colorTransform(_bitmap.rect, new ColorTransform(1, 1, 1, 1.1, 0, 0, 0, 1)); The problem appears to occur only to fully faded-out images. If I only go part way it is recoverable. fading out: faded back

• Can an Aspect conditionally render parts of a JSP page ?

  At present the jsp pages have normal authorize tags to conditionally render links and information etc. The website is on the intranet, and we're using Spring Security 2.0.4. Ive now got a business user who wants to allow all roles to access everything for the first few weeks, then gradually add the security back in as feedback is gathered from the business. Rather than go through every page, removing the authorize tags, only to have to put them back in, is is possible to configure these through an aspect, or is there any other way to externalize this into a config file ? I've found Spring's MethodSecurityInterceptor and the meta data tags, but these wouldn't give me the externalization. I've been on google for the last hour, and am now pretty sure this can't be done, but would love to find out I haven't been asking the right questions. Advice appreciated
