    I just heard about using hdparams to optimize the Hard Disk Performance of a server ? Is this common practice ? What file systems do you use ? I generally deploy on the second last release of Ubuntu for stability reasons, do you some other filesystems or use distributed file systems from the get go ? Do the hdparam settings change for different File systems ? I haven't tried this yet, so how much difference do changes like this make ?

  • Network devices disabled

    I've been running the Lucid Lynx alpha since first release and only now, after recently putting my computer into suspend then restarting, has the networking failed completely. Both wireless and ethernet list as disabled with sudo lshw -C network. The wireless adapter is an Atheros AR928X. The ethernet is a Realtek RTL8111/8168B. Any suggestions as to how I might go about fixing this?

  • Update to recent stable php in Ubuntu 12.04

    We run an Ubuntu 12.04 server where php 5.3.10 is installed by default. I thought Ubuntu did only apply bugfixes in their updates, so micros like 5.3.x should pass through. Apparently, our version isn't updated, but we are stuck with a critical bug in php which is solved in 5.3.15. Should I wait longer for this release to bubble up? Or are there safe repositories to use for Ubuntu to continuously update php and php related packages?

  • "Address already in use" error from socket bind, when ports are not being used

    I can not bind (using C or python sockets) to any port in the range: 59969-60000 Using lsof, netstat and fuser I do not see any processes using these ports. Other ports such as 59900-59968 and 60001-60009 I can bind to them. My OS: is CentOS release 5.5 (Final) 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 There must be something missing? Anyone have any idea how to debug why this port range is not usable? Cheers, Ivan

    I'm trying to have MySQL point to a directory on an EBS volume I mounted on my EC2 machine. I took th following steps: Stopped MySQL (/etc/init.d/mysqld stop) - successful Created a MySQL directory on my volume, mounted on /vol (mkdir /vol/mysql) Copied the contents of /var/lib/mysql to /vol/mysql (cp -R /var/lib/mysql /vol/mysql) Chanded the owner and group of that directory to match the original (chown -R mysql:mysql /vol/mysql) - after this step, the 2 directories are identical. Edited the /etc/my.cnf file (commented 2 original lines): [mysqld] #datadir=/var/lib/mysql #socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock datadir=/vol/mysql socket=/vol/mysql/mysql.sock` Started MySQL (/etc/init.d/mysqld start) - FAILED The error file /var/log/mysqld.log contains the following lines: 100205 20:52:54 mysqld started 100205 20:52:54 InnoDB: Started; log sequence number 0 43665 100205 20:52:54 [Note] /usr/libexec/mysqld: ready for connections. Version: '5.0.45' socket: '/vol/mysql/mysql.sock' port: 3306 Source distribution No other errors are available. What am I doing wrong? Where can I find the error/s encountered by MySql?     I have two Windows 2008 R2 (Amazon EC2) instances running SQL Server 2008 R2. I use 9TB striped disks (9x1TB EBS volumes) for storage. One server is running as principal and second one as mirror. Both started from the same image, database and tlog files located on striped disk. Mirror server failed 3 times in last 2 months with errors: EventID 823 The operating system returned error 2(The system cannot find the file specified.) to SQL Server during a write at offset 0x00000048058a00 in file 'D:\TLogs***_log.ldf'. Additional messages in the SQL Server error log and system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe system-level error condition that threatens database integrity and must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database consistency check (DBCC CHECKDB). This error can be caused by many factors; for more information, see SQL Server Books Online. and EventID 1454 Database mirroring will be suspended. Server instance 'xxxxxxxxxx' encountered error 823, state 6, severity 24 when it was acting as a mirroring partner for database '***'. The database mirroring partners might try to recover automatically from the error and resume the mirroring session. For more information, view the error log for additional error messages. followed by EventID 19019 The MSSQLSERVER service terminated unexpectedly. After this rebooting instance is necessary to restore mirroring. First two times I thought it was hardware related (striped disk failure) and relaunched instance on new hardware. But the issue is back after few weeks again. It only affects mirror instances. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

  • Seeking web-based FTP client for very large file upload

    I have looked around for these for some time... the limits imposed by the web server and/or the dynamic programming environment (e.g. PHP) are far too restrictive for the application I'm working on. We need to be able to move large graphics and video files to and from clients (ranging from tens of MB to a few GB in a single file). Plain FTP with a proper desktop client will do the trick, and we're hosting this in Amazon EC2 with EBS. User management will be done from the office via webmin. Users are chroot-jailed into their home dir by proftpd. net2ftp will work for many clients, but we often need to move single files that approach 1GB or exceed 2-3GB which is way out of the range of any http-based uploader. So we turn to Java or Flash - can they do it? From within the web browser establish an FTP connection and grab a huge file? There are licensed applets and such out there, but none seem convincing. Again, I'm looking for some code that can speak FTP and read (& write?) the local disk, that is delivered in a web browser, and can move single files of 2GB+. The reason for having a web-based interface to FTP is to skip the software installation step for our clients. I will consider proper desktop client software as long as it's "portable" and at least Win+Mac and can be easily configured by lay-man users in a hurry.

  • Cannot exit X server, restart, shutdown or drop to tty when VGA monitor active

    I have a strange problem. If I connect an external VGA monitor to my laptop, exiting the X environment in any way crashes the computer. For example, say I am working with my two monitors (the laptop's and one connected to my VGA port) active. Hitting Ctrl+Alt+F Key should take me down to a tty. What actually happens is that the VGA screen goes blank, as you would expect, but the laptop screen, although still on, shows nothing. I know the screen is on because it is slightly more illuminated than when it is off. When in this state, I can do nothing to regain access to the machine. I have tried: Ctrl+F Key (and even Ctrl+Alt+F Key, just in case) combinations and none seem to have any effect. Ctrl+Alt+Del : Nothing Magic SysRq key: Nothing Blindly typing my username and password and trying to reboot/shutdown or restart GDM or MDM: Nothing The only thing that works is a hard reset. The exact same behavior occurs when kiling the X server through Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, rebooting or shutdown. There is no difference if I reboot/shutdown/log out using the WM's graphical menu or if I use the shutdown or rebootcommands. It is also not WM-dependent. I have the same problem using Cinnamon, Gnome 3, MATE and xfce4. It is, however, VGA dependent. I have tried connecting another VGA monitor and have the same problem. I do not, however, have this problem if a screen is connected to the DisplayPort. It is, therefore, a VGA specific issue. To make things even stranger, this only occurs when both screens are active. If either the laptop screen or the VGA monitor is inactive the problem goes away. Finally, this problem arose when I installed the latest Linux Mint Debian (LMDE). It did not occur with the previous release of LMDE. I am not sure what has changed since I used the same kernel version in both releases (I had upgraded the kernel while on the previous release) and, I think, the same nvidia drivers. Oh, and yes, I have updated the nvidia driver. Hardware: Dell M4500 laptop CPU: Intel Core i7 RAM: 8GB Graphics: nVidia GT216 [Quadro FX 880M] Software: LMDE, kernel 3.2.0-2-amd64 Xorg: 1.11.4 nVidia kernel: 295.20-1+3.2.9-1 Possibly relevant files: /var/log/Xorg.0.log ~/.xsession-errors Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?   • Amazon VPC NAT not working

    I'm trying to create a NAT instance for my VPC to allow instances on private subnets connect to the internet (most importantly, S3). I tried following the instructions here: http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonVPC/2011-07-15/UserGuide/index.html?VPC_NAT_Instance.html . Unfortunately, the instances in the private subnet (call it 10.10.2.0/24) cannot reach the internet. I have done the following: Create a NAT instance (Amazon's ami-vpc-nat-1.0.0-beta.i386-ebs (ami-d8699bb1)) in public subnet (call it 10.10.1.0/24). Changed "Source / Dest Check" to disabled. Created a new entry in the default routing table (which is used by 10.10.2.0/24) and had it point to the ID of the newly created instance. Associated an Elastic IP address with the NAT instance. Allowed all outbound traffic on the security group of the NAT instance. Ensured that all traffic could pass between the two subnets. I've tried also doing this with an existing instance using iptables, but had no luck. And I have verified that sys.net.ipv4.ip_forward is 1, just in case anyone was wondering. And I still have no internet connectivity from the instances on 10.10.2.0/24. Does anyone have any suggestions?
