• Enable a program in Windows to run multiple times?

  I've got this legacy software that only allows you to run one copy at a time, it detects that you have another session opened and it won't allow you to open a second instance. The problem is this is a cpu intensive program and it only use a single core. Is there any hacks or tweaks so I can trick it and open more than one instance? This would allow me to retire about 5 servers... I'm using Windows 2008 R2. I had to use cff explorer to enable the use more than 2GB RAM as the program crashes when it tries to use more than 2GB.

  I have an Apache 2.4 webserver running on Windows. I am looking into system hardening and the config file httpd.conf. There are numerous load modules and I am wondering which modules I can safely disable for performance and / or security improvements. Some examples of things I would think I can disable are: LoadModule cgi_module others like LoadModule rewrite_module LoadModule version_module LoadModule proxy_module LoadModule setenvif_module I am not so sure they can be disabled. • VMWare workstation: guest OS becomes sluggish after being idle for 12+ hours?

  Hi, My VM becomes sluggish after a few hours(~12 hours or so) of being idle, there is no impact on the host, just the gueste. The guest OS becomes sluggish. It has lots of RAM, runs on Raid 0, quad core i5 750, everything is defragged, but the only way I found to keep it's responsiveness optimal is to shutdown(dumps the memory) and the start; a restart of the guest OS doesnt dump the memory so I need to be able to do a stop of the VM, and then a start. Coming from Hyper-V I had to learn VMWare and after a few months of fine tunning it I'm quite impressed with how configurable VMWare is. This is the only small issue I haven't been able to fix, has anyone encountered this?

• Are these symptoms of a video card is dying?

  What I am getting from my PC: Scrambled text in the boot menu. The scrambled text dissapears and everthing goes normal after several restarts, or the computer has worked for some time. Display goes blank showing, windows kernel mode driver stopped responding. Sometimes the windows just hangs, I need to restart the pc for that. There used to be some scrambled colors in my windows, so I cleaned up my video carda and port and reinstalled the video card, things are something right. The pc runs normally for hours in safe mode, as diffault display driver works at that case. My PC specs: Core 2 Duo processor 2 GB RAM NVIDIA EN210 SILENT GPU Windows 8 Drivers details: NVIDIA drivers - v331.65, told to be fully compatible with Win8 Currently I am installing Windows 7 and will be putting the older version of driver v320 to test, yet I'm really confused weather my GPU is dying or still on go.

  From the powershell prompt, when I try to run a program and feed it a command line option, powershell ends up mangling the option. Why does this happen? Is there any way to stop it besides enclosing the option in quotes? For example, from the powershell prompt: PS Microsoft.PowerShell.Core\FileSystem::\\mach\share .\myprog.exe -file=input.txt myprog.exe ends up getting two arguments: 1) -file=input 2) .txt I need to run it like: .\myprog.exe "-file=input.txt" or .\myprog.exe '-file=input.txt' to force it to be one argument. No other shell does this.

  Why does Windows 7 x64 work faster than an x86 edition on my PC even though I mostly use x86 things in it? What's wrong with me, and what am I missing? Majority of the things I use is x86 (e.g. DAWs, games, media players). A considerable amount of them, however, are x64 (although their x86 counterparts work just fine). I've tried using the same things on the same system but always ended up finding Windows 7 x64 working slightly faster than x86. I'm very observant. I even notice the tiniest window animations. System: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93 GHz RAM: 2 GB x 2 = 4 GB DDR2 @ 332 MHz Motherboard: Intel D945GCNL Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4350 @ 1 GB Dedicated Audio: M-Audio FastTrack Pro HDD: Samsung HD753LJ 733 GB & Samsung HD160JJ 156 GB As you can see, my system is old.

• oracle virtualbox doesn't work for host Kubuntu since Lucid Lynx 10.04

  I have a thinkpad edge 14 core i3 2.4 ghz and 4g ram; I have tried kubuntu 10.04, 10.10, 11.10, 12.04 and 12.10 (all x64 architecture); Both oracle and ose virtualbox only works properly to install XP and windows 7 quest system on kubuntu 10.04; For every other kubuntu release since, the guest installation goes as far as formatting the virtual drive, freezes at this step, and doesn't even go as far as copying files to hard-drive to begin installation. But virtualbox has not stopped responding to commands; I can kill that one specific window with the problem installation ("machine" - "close" - "power off the machine") and start over again without having to force-kill virtualbox application. If anyone knows how I can go about addressing this problem, any help you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thank You.

  I am using VSTS 2008 + C# + .Net 3.5 + IIS 7.0. I have created a new web site and put an html file into the directory. And when I use browse function in IIS manager to browse the html file, I met with the following error, any ideas what is wrong? BTW: I am very confused about unauthorized error since I run the worker process under administrator account. • Odd SVN Checkout failures occur frequenctly on VMWare virtual machines

  We've recently been experiencing seemingly random SVN checkout failures on our Hudson build system. Google search has failed me; I'm hoping the super user community can help me out :-) We are occasionally receiving the following SVN error when our Hudson build jobs checkout source via the Hudson Subversion plug-in (which uses svn kit): ERROR: Failed to check out http://server/svnroot/trunk org.tmatesoft.svn.core.SVNException: svn: Processing REPORT request response failed: XML document structures must start and end within the same entity. (/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default) svn: REPORT request failed on '/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default' This issue seems to only occur when checking out from our Virtual Machines (Windows XP, Fedora 9, Fedora 12) using Hudson's SVN Plug-in. Systems that use the traditional SVN client seem to work. SVN Server version: 1.6.6 Hudson version: 1.377 Hudson SVN Plugin Version: 1.17 Has anyone dealt with this issue, or have any suggestions? • Snow Leopard Hangs at Login Window

  I've had an issue for the past few months, but I rarely restart so it hasn't caused too much trouble. Basically, when I start up my Mac (iMac10,1 - 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.6.3) everything proceeds as usual until I reach the login window. The login window displays normally, but keyboard and mouse input seem to be ignored. This condition persists for around 5 minutes at which time everything goes back to normal. While the login window is frozen my second monitor appears entirely blue, the second monitor receives a background as soon as the login window becomes responsive. If I startup while holding SHIFT the problem still occurs, but the freeze is much shorter. Looking through my logs I see no activity during the time that the login window is frozen. I've attempted to repair disk permissions, and gone through every possible maintenance option in Cocktail.

• Mouse Hang with voltage fluctuation

  I bought a new assembled PC about a month ago, but for the past 7 or 8 days I found my mouse cursor hangs every time there is a voltage fluctuation on my UPS (I guess it as when sound comes from ups then mouse hang for 2 or 3 sec. and them it goes normal again). My PC also seems to shut down while I'm working and it refuses to boot again - I end up needing to switch off my UPS and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. It will then boot as per normal. Could the trouble be with my PSU? Am I potentially damaging my computer by pressing and holding the power button? • gtk2/mate apps are choppy on debian testing [migrated]

  I have recently upgraded to a core-i7 system and now all the apps from mate (GTK2 based) are very slow. Basically when I switch to a workspace that has a couple mate-terminals open, they are redrawn as if these were sent over the network. GTK3 apps and firefox work properly and are refreshed instantly. I'm running Debian testing. I have tried to reinstall xorg and related packages and everything seems to work fine except for this. Here is my xorg.log. Any hints?

• PC reboots regularly

  Windows XP RAID 5 drives Intel Dual Core processor 2 GB Ram I am running a processor temperature monitor. It does not appear to be overheating. I do not have virus. The PC freezes and reboots. I do not think it is software related, because it will reboot if it is doing nothing. Could it be the power supply? Might i need to replace it? How do I diagnose this? Is this the kind of question that is appropriate here? I am not sure.

  I have a PNY NVIDIA Quadro FX 580 graphics card with 1x DVI and 2x DisplayPorts. The DVI port works fine with both my Viewsonic monitors but I cannot get either of the DPs to work using the supplied DP to DVI adapter; all I get is a "no signal" on either monitor when connected to either DP port. The NVIDIA Control Panel shows that the second monitor is not connected when in fact it is. How do I get the second monitor to work?   My one of friend said that his server load average sometime goes above 500-1000, for me it is strange value because I never saw load average more than 10. • Why Java applicaiton is running slow for clients on Linux

  We have two linux servers which have Apache Tomcat Installed. One is running the Database, the other is running with Java application. More than 100 users are connected to the servers. Server machines are quad core normal PC's which have 4 GB memory. It was running properly for the last 6 months but the application has recently started to run slowly . Suddenly the Java application is getting stuck & users cannot work for some time. There is no network issue. I am trying to identify the reason for this, whether it is a machine problem or the problem is in the Java application. Can any body help me with this?

  hello, i have ubuntu 10.10 64bit on hp 6735s (turion processor). it overheats, and i'm forced to use turion power control in order to keep core temperature to a reasonable level. one more measure that i use is putting my processors to conservative mode. that way, i'm perfectly happy with its performance, and heat is where it should be. however, after my latest upgrade, something happened - cores are back to ondemand by default, and i'm not sure if turionpowercontrol is working any more (ps axu | grep urion shows no process). in addition, i read somewhere that laptop-mode uses hdd spindown for preserving data/energy, and that hdds have only a limited amount of those spindowns, so laptop-mode usage can actually shorten the life of my hdd. i'm wondering if there is a good way to set my cores to automatically go to conservative mode? also, what's the good way to see what is the voltage my cores use? on windows i use cpuz tools. thx and sorry for the long explanation.

• Boxee on Dell 32in TV causes headaches, how to troubleshoot?

  I have revamped an old pc, installing 4GB ram and a 256MB video card so that I could run Boxee to a Dell W3200 series TV that came with my apartment. It is connected via VGA, resolution is 1360x768, 24bit color, 60Htz refresh rate. Unfortunately, every time I use it I end up with a headache after less that 30 min. I have had my eyes check recently, and am able to play xbox (connected via hdmi) on the same TV without problems. What are the potential causes? My system seems to well meet or exceed the min requirements for boxee, XP, AMD Atholon 64 X2 Dual Core, 4GB RAM. Could it be the VGA cable? What is the most cost effective way to trouble shoot?

• Performance Bottleneck with Photoshop CS3 on XPSP3

  I have an intel core 2 4400, with 4GB of ram running on XP 32-BIT SP3. Photoshop CS3 becomes sluggish & unresponsive even after loading up small files, and this is with only Bridge open as well, plus McAffee AV. My photos are loaded in from a USB 2 external drive, and my c: drive is used only for programs and windows itself. Even with 4GB of RAM, i am seeing the pagefile increase to 1.6GB, whilst there appears to be 1.5GB of RAM free to use. I've defragged the drive, with defraggler, and after that the only file reported to be fragmented was the pagefile itself. Anyone have any ideas what i can do to improve/solve this?

  I recently quit gaming so I took out my (GeForce GTX 550 Ti) video card and switched back to the (cheap) integrated card because I don't want the dedicated card using up power & making unnecessary heat/noise. But now I get lag when I watch high-res movies, or when I open several videos at the same time, but I don't want to go back to my (big/expensive) video card because that seems like overkill. • Case in-sensitivity for Apache httpd Location directive

  I am working with a solution that requires the usage of mod_proxy_balancer and an application server that both ignores case and mixes different case combinations in URLs found in generated content. The configuration works, however I have now a new requirement that causes problems. I should be able to create a location directive (as per http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/core.html#location ) and have the URL-path interpret in case insensitive mode. This requirement comes from the need to add authentication directives to the location. As you might guess, users (or the application in question) changing one letter to capital circumvents the protection instantly. The httpd runs on Unix platform so every configuration directive is apparently case sensitive by default. Should the regular expressions in the Location directive work in this case? Could someone please show me an example of such configuration that should work? In case a regular expression can not be forced to work case insensitively, what part of httpd's source code should I go around modifying?

  I want to grant users access to the nagios 3 core frontend by using an active directory group ("NagiosWebfrontend" in the code below). I got the hint, that I am missing a contact in nagios configuration which is equal to my login, but creating one with the same name as the domain user had no effect on this issue. However, it would be great to find a solution without manually editing nagios.conf for every new user, so the admins could grant access to nagios by just putting the user to "NagiosWebfrontend" group. What would be the best way to solve it?

  I am running 64 bit Ubuntu 11.10 on an i7 with 8gigs of ram. I thought of putting this on askubuntu.com but decided that maybe the question has a much broader appeal. I have the following error message popping up when I run math simulations. CPUn: Core temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = xxxxxxx) CPUn: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = xxxxxxx) I realize that this is a hardware warning message (machine check exception, correct me if I am wrong). How do I turn these messages off? Since it doesn't seem to have a detrimental effect of my calculations or my computer (presumably), I don't like it cluttering up my virtual console screen with hundreds of these messages.

• Hyper-V and host-installed hardware devices: can guest VMs access?

  Have a couple of servers I'd like to setup as Hyper-V Servers, with a couple of Windows 2008 Standard VMs. On the host, we have a few hardware devices we'd like to be accessible to the guest; I'm not sure if these are supported via a raw "pass-thru" on Hyper-V (which I don't have a lot of experience with) if the same drivers are installed on the guest. Hardware in question is a Brooktrout fax card, a SCSI adapter for the tape drive, and a 9-pin serial connected to one of the core firewalls for management.
