  Arch Linux shows a blinking cursor instead of a booting installer. I ran sudo dd if=archlinux-2010.05-core-i686.iso of=/dev/sdb1 and checked the MD5 sums. I tried to boot it on two different PCs and got the same result: instead of booting GRUB — or anything useful, for that matter — it just showed a blinking cursor at the top left corner of the screen. The machines became unresponsive to any kind of input, the flash drive LED didn't seem to blink or shiver at all and there seemed to be no other activity whatsoever. I tried using another flash drive, but the machine completely ignored it, booting Windows "normally."

• LGA 1155 or LGA 2011? Which has a brighter future?

  I'd basically like to rehash this question, only 22 months later. The last system I built was in 2006, shortly after AMD came out with socket AM2. I was able to upgrade the processor on it 3 times and would love to do the same with my next computer. Since AMD seems to be lagging, I'm going for Intel this time. I've read that Intel changes chip sets all the time, so there's no safe bet. I also read (1 comment on 1 forum) that said LGA 2011 will have 8-core support, but LGA 1155 won't, which leads me to believe that LGA 2011 might be a better choice. Anyone have any good advice for me?

• Could a computer act (dependably) as a wireless router for 200+ clients? [closed]

  That is, I have a Core 2 Duo E7500 at 2.93GHz, with 2GB memory. I plan to install either Windows Server 2012 or Zeroshell 2.0RC1, and it also (planning to) includes two PCIe Wireless Card Adapters. It also has one ethernet port, and I will connect that to another machine which will be a Database and a Web Server. My plan is to have a corporate level wireless intranet with 200+ clients. I cannot afford to buy routers because I want to operate at zero costs as possible, utilizing my available resources. Is that plan plausible? Also, what minimum specs should my wireless card have? @SvenW: Oh, I meant corporate on the deployment level. I am still an undergraduate and this is more of an educational and expiremental work than an actual project. I got Windows Server 2012 for free though, and this isn't actually for commercial use.

• Fixing/Extending Standard Windows File Open/Save Dialog [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Change left side link of the Save As Dialog for a DropBox one? Almost every time I use the standard Windows (XP) File Open/Save Dialog I get frustrated in how long it takes me to navigate to where I want to go. :-( (I won't even get into the MS Office dialog that makes things even worse) This is the dialog I'm referring to (with some notes) Notes: Wouldn't a Drive list be handy in here? C:\, D:\, E:\, etc. What about a breadcrumb URI? (the magenta list of links) Why isn't Program Files one of the icons on the left? (green) I'm always going in there for something Why can't I type "../../../" to navigate up multiple directories in the File name box? (blue) There has got to be some utilities out there that can "hijack" or "overwrite" this core windows dialog to provide a much better set of options. I'm looking for any/all solutions to help fix this dialog.

But while running queries, I have observed it's NOT utilizing full resources. I am thinking that if I let MySQL utilize maximum resources on my server, it can reduce execution time.   I just installed red hat enterprise 5 in my laptop and on desktop both. In desktop it is working fine but in laptop it is not showing the eth device. (I tried ifconfig only lo is there). I tried ifup eth0 still nothing happened. The network service in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and in /etc/sysconfig/network are enable. I had ubuntu in my laptop before and I faced same problem with that too. Is there any problem with my laptop? I have my system on dual boot and in win7 networking is running fine.   I am have today a dedicated server with these specs: Intel Core i5 750, 2x120GB (ssd + raid), Windows Server 2008 Web, 200Mbps Network, 24 Gb DD3 And I would like to know what are the best thing I can do to prevent a DDoS Attack, since I know this will be a real threat by the importance of the files that will be archived in it. • Setting up 2 external monitors on a laptop with VGA splitter

  I have a laptop with a graphics card that supports 2 displays. I would like to know the easiest way to set it up so I can close my laptop lid and use 2 external monitors (unique displays). I use it primarily for office applications and video and want a quality, clear picture. The laptop has 1 VGA port and I have 2 24" 1920x1200 monitors that have VGA and DVI ports. So a few questions: Can I just use a VGA splitter? (seen mixed feedback on this) Would it a VGA to 2 DVI splitter give a better picture quality? • Strange noise from my laptop when it is closed

  I am fan of powerfull PCs with huge wide screen monitors but I have bought an laptop as gift to my parents. This is the description: "second-handed" lenovo (and there is a sign "ThinkPad" Intel Core Duo CPU T6570 2.10 GHz 64 bits Windows 7 Ultimate and the issue is that when the laptop is turn on and then closed, after a interval of time (I am not sure how much exactly but I believe it is several hours) a strange noise come from the laptop. The noise is something like a "start-up" noise of old computers. I first thought this is some hardware issue but everything seems to work fine. Has anyone an idea what can cause this type of noise or a what can I do in order to track the problem down? I am not sure if this is a important thing, but the laptop is always connected to the power. Note: I have just noticed that the sound is generated again when the laptop is closed and then opened. • Is there any Mac Pro hardware parts that can ONLY be purchased thru Apple?

  I'd like to know if I need to be concerned about any hardware parts that I should include in a brand new Mac Pro purchase, instead of trying to hunt it down on 3rd party vendors (or whitelist vendors / hardware suppliers). The main components I'm interested for "upgradeability" are: Processors (If starting with Two 2.4GHz Quad-Core "Westmere"); RAM (If starting with the least possible, which seems to be 6 x 1GB); Video Cards (If starting with one ATI Radeon HD 5770, can a 2nd one be purchased elsewhere?) Hard-Drives (Since these are mounted in specialized trays [if I'm not mistaking], are they also sold elsewhere? And can they be bought as SSDs?) Power Supply (Do I need to be concerned about this at all, or does it auto-adjust depending on the new component upgrades?) I just want to be sure by choosing a Mac Pro with lower component specifications that I can in fact purchase upgrade parts cheaper elsewhere. Thanks!

  I have recurring BSODs that really have me scratching my head. Here's a look at the errors: MEMORY_MANAGEMENT 0x1A (ntoskrnl.exe) - I've seen this 9 times since April 2012 NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM 0x24 (Ntfs.sys) - this one's new, happend 4 days ago BAD_POOL_HEADER 0x19 (win32k.sys) - also new, happened 7 days ago My system specs: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3.30GHz ASUS Sabertooth P67 Motherboard (Rev 2) * RMA'd my Rev 1 due to recall 16GB (4 x 4GB) Kingston HyperX 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM 2 x 640GB Western Digital Caviar Black 64MB SATA HDD EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTS450 1GB PCI-E 2.0 Graphics Card I've got Windows 7 Home Premium and it's completely patched. I'm also running Microsoft Security Essentials, which is up-to-date and always present. I've run MemTest86+ from a USB drive for up to nine hours, giving my RAM a total of 6 passes, and it didn't detect a single error. I've used chkdsk in Windows 7 to scan the C:/ drive on boot (twice) and it found no problems. How can I find out what's causing all these blue screens?

  Where could I get best step by step instructions (with some simple explanations) how to setup domain controller on Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core? I don't know what do I need? Do I need DNS as well and AD and so on and so forth. I don't know enough about these things, but I need to set them up to prepare development environment. • Serious voltage and temperature problems

  My computer has been acting up when I play games so I wanted to look into why. Issue 1: GPU Temp According to afterburner and speedfan my 8800GTX idles at 90 degrees and then when playing games shoots up to over 110C which is when my graphics basically starts to give rendering issues. Issue 2: CPU Temp Speedfan is saying my CPU temp is 83C idle but when I look at core temp it says core0 is at 35C and core1 is at 33C. Issue 3: Voltages This is what speedfan is saying for my voltages: Vcore1: 1.01V Vcore2: 1.90V +3.3V: 3.31V +5V: 4.95V +12V: 0.51V -12V: -16.80V -5V: -8.43V +5V 5.13V Vbat: 3.25V Vcore: 3.00V +3.3V: 3.20V These voltages, for lack of a better word, look f*cked. With all this happening, the computer runs ok under normal use. Is the software giving out incorrect readouts or instead should I immediately move the computer into another room before it explodes? P.s I would like to add this is a stock system. EVGA 8800GTX, E6850 CPU, 800W PSU

• HP ML150 G6 upgrading RAM/CPU beyond specs?

  I am being told that some limits on some HP servers can be crossed. Do any of you have any experience with that? A ML150/G6 is limited to 48GB RAM but I have been talking to a German company that guaranties me that this server will be able to be upgraded to 384GB RAM (using 32GB memory modules and 2 CPUs) http://www.compuram.de/en/memory,HP+%28-Compaq%29,Server,Proliant,ML150+G6.htm Can this really be true? The server that I have is using E5504 CPUs but will I be able to upgrade to any CPU that is using a LGA1366 socket?   I have an ASUS P7P55-M motherboard running with an Intel Core i5-750 processor and 4 GB RAM with 1600 MT/s speed. For some reason the default settings of the motherboard make all the components run at half their optimums. I have switched to the "D.O.C.P." profile and supposedly everything is as it's supposed to be (verified with CPU-Z). There is also an "X.M.P." profile and a manual one. Are either of the DOCP or XMP safe to go with? I wouldn't use the manual mode as I would likely mess something up real bad. XMP seems to be more memory oriented.

It has 3 drives C Drive: 80GB SDD Drive P Drive: 120GB SDD (for core programs) D Drive: 1TB SDD (for data and other) I have an MSDN subscription and I am the type of person that loves to install tons of software to check it out. I am very worried that installation programs are forcing me to place a large amount of files on the small C drive. I fear that I will quickly run out of space on my C drive while having ample space on my TB drive. What would you do in my shoes? I didn't select this PC or set the config up. I am wishing that the 120 SSD was my C, to give me a little more room to grow. I guess there are no magic solutions here but I am just looking for your general thoughts

• Should I limit end-user gigabit ports to avoid saturating uplink/trunk connections?

  We have a campus with 16 buildings and older 850nm 1Gbps fiber links between the buildings, that all come to a core switch for our servers that also uses 1Gbps ports. We're finally starting to replace our aging 10/100 end-user switches, and much of what we're looking at are 1 Gbps units. My question is, since the trunk/uplink lines are still 1Gbps, if I were to install 1 Gbps switches for end users, should I limit the ports to 100Mbps until I can also upgrade the trunks to avoid allowing a bad-behaving host to saturate a trunk line (since we're a college, we have plenty of mis-behaving hosts) and thereby create a DoS situation for a building, or will TCP congestion control typically take care of that for me? What if we have a lot of UDP traffic (games, video chats, even a small amount of bittorrent)?

  I have following in cpuinfo: processor : 0 vendor_id : AuthenticAMD cpu family : 15 model : 107 model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+ stepping : 2 According to Wikipedia page there are two kinds of 5600+ -- one of 90nm technology, another of 65nm. How can I understand which one I have? There seem to be no direct correspondence between contents of cpuinfo and info on Wikipedia page. AMD site seems to use some other naming scheme for processors too. How can I map values of family, model and stepping from cpuinfo to the data available on Wikipedia/AMD?

• Strange sound from Laptop, Microphone, Speakers or Soundcard?

  I have recently purchased a second hand computer. There didn't seem to be anything wrong with it on purchasing, however recently I have noticed a small issue. Any time I play sound or listen through my headphones, I can hear what seems to be the CPU working (ie when beginning a new task, there is a small crackling). Also if I tap my laptop I can hear the sound louder, as if it is being picked up by the mic and then playing that sound in real time through the speakers or headphones. I have tried reading other topics but cannot find an answer to this question. These are the specs I am running on; Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit Pentium Dual Core CPU T4300 @ 2.10Ghz 2.10Ghz I hope someone can help me with this issue, it would be much appreciated.

• Upgrading Mac OS X 10.5.8 Corrupted Lightroom 2.7

  I use Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2. I recntly upgraded to 10.5.8 and began to have issues with LR. So, I reinstalled and downgraded my OS. I'm now running 10.5.2 on my MacBook 2.4G Core Duo with 4G RAM. Everything works fine now, but the downgrade also resulted in having only Safari 3.0.4 and and older version of iTunes. I can't upgrade either of those until I upgrade the OS but I'm reluctant to do so because I might have problems again. Any suggestions? Install 10.6 instead? What kind of issues can I expect from that?

• VMware Fusion / New Machine / verify VMs?

  I just got a 15" MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM, 2.66 i7 and 500GB SSD. Very sweet and fast! My old machine was 2.66 Core 2 Duo. I used Migration Assistant to migrate my old MBP to the new. When I started VMware to run Windows and Ubuntu I got the message first This VM has been moved or copied to a new machine. Did you move or copy it? I answered Copied. Then I got the message this CPU is a different configuration than the machine that created the VM. You may get unpredictable results. I answered Open Anyway. Windows XP, Windows 7, and Ubuntu all seem to work OK, but how can I verify? Is there some form of test harness for a VM? I have had a VM degrade and become unusable with very catastrophic data loss (on Parallels...), so I am a bit paranoid. Thanks,
