• Using Folder Redirection GPO and Offline Files and Folders

  I want to use Folder Redirection to redirect user's My Documents to a network share. First question is: What is best practices for mapping the drive? Should I use the profile tab in AD with the %username% variable, or a net use logon script, or something else? Second question is: How do I deal with laptops and syncing the network with the local storage? I want to have 2-way syncing so if they manually map their networked home drive and edit it from a different computer, it will sync the newer version to their My Documents folder the next time they connect their normal work computer. I also want to be sure that if they edit a file offline on their laptop while away from the office, that the network version syncs the changes the next time they connect that laptop. Please advise best practices for this scenario in a 2008 R2/Win7 environment. I am also interested in Mac clients for this environment, and while I am very Mac savvy, I would like to hear what others consider to be best practices for Mac network homedirs in a Win environment.

• Apply Group Policy to Remote Desktop Services users but not when they log on to their local system

  Running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 with Remote Desktop Services role. I want to hide the servers drives using a GPO, but not the users local drives when they are logged on to their local system. Using a GPO, I went to "User Configuration - Policies - Administrative Template - Windows Components - Windows Explorer" and enabled "Hide these specified drives in My Computer" and "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" and in both used "Restrict all drives". Then under "Security Filtering" for the GPO, I restricted it to the system running Remote Desktop Services and the specific users who will be using RDS. I then applied the GPO to our domain and it worked a little too well. Not only was I successful in getting the GPO to work for RDS users, but it also affected those same users at their local systems as well. I've tried everything I can think of, but can't figure out how to apply this just to the RDS but not at their local system. What am I missing?

• Enable multiple audio output on Windows 7

  For Windows 7, 64 bit: I have a digital SPDIF output to my stereo, which controls speakers in other rooms. I also have a set of speakers connected to the regular audio jack at the computer. This allows me to send music to the kitchen while my child plays games on the computer. Works great. Except when I'm playing games and still want to listen to music. ;-D I know I can manually switch WMP to play through the speakers instead of SPDIF, but I was wondering if there's any way to enable simultaneous audio out in Windows 7? Virtual Audio Card is a non-starter because I'm running 64 bits and the VAC driver isn't signed.

• Sync Banshee library data.

  I use Banshee to organise my music, I particularly like its scoring system and I have smart playlists based on it. However, I have two versions of my music library, one on each of my computers. As one of the computers is small I only have a favourite set of songs on that computer rather than my whole collection. The computers are not on a local network, but I do use Ubuntu One for file sharing between them. Is there any way I can synchronise song data (play count, score, skip count ...) and playlist data (including smart playlists that include songs based on this data) between the two computers? This would only be relevant of course for the songs that exist on both computers, the songs that exist on only one would need to be ignored. I did consider putting the library data file (I think it is .xml but I'm not sure) into the shared file and creating a symbolic link to it, but then I wouldn't be able to have a different set of songs on each computer. • Ubuntu Slow - What architecture does the Windows Installer install?

  I feel absolutely limited by using Windows, and I need to switch to a Unix environment. I once installed Red Hat on my lappie (screen + external monitor setup; 4GB ram; x64; runs fast) and it worked fine, but I saw that the computer cluster that is the birthplace of my unix knowledge switched to Ubuntu, so naturally I follow. To the point. When I installed Ubuntu onto my machine via the Windows Installer, it ran quite slow. Opening Firefox takes about 8-9 seconds, it freezes up often, unable to handle its own background processes. I saw in a thread that, perhaps, it is running slow because the Windows Installer is installing an x64 version. Of course, my computer has had no performance issues in the past(except that time with the trojans but you know, know one is perfect ;) ) Anyways, I uninstalled Ubuntu, freeing up the max allocated memory it took up, and continue to be sad, trapped in my MS world with only a buggy Cygwin, any assistance is greatly appreciated! :) Thanks ~Ben

• PC shut downs automatically after a second

  I have this not-so-old computer that's not being used for a year or so. Specs: Motherboard: ASUS PN5-E SLI CPU: Intel Core2Duo E4300 RAM:2x2GB SuperTalent DDR2-800 VGA: Zogis GeForce 7950GT PSU: Vitsuba San-55-S 550w HD: No hardrives yet When I power on the computer, everything seem to start, but right away the whole system shuts down. I've removed and changed the RAM sticks, take out the VGA, everything I could think of. So what could it be causing this? The PSU? The motherboard is dead? The CPU? Any help to isolate the problem will be useful. Thanks PS: Please don't close the question, this could be helpful to anybody having a similar problem, even with different hardware.

  My family is looking for a programming/computer science tutor. Personally, I want to learn Java or some other brand of web programming. I am best described as a PC "power user." I have never programmed in the past and would like a good jump start. I am a very quick learner and do not expect the tutor to have to teach me the ultra basic stuff that I can learn myself. My son also needs a programming tutor. He just got into Carnegie Mellon as a computer science major. Having done only robotics and mathematics in the past he is very nervous that he does not have the same level of knowledge as his future classmates. I need some help coming up with a list of questions to ask potential tutors and some criteria to judge them by. Thanks! Edit: So far I have come up with just the obvious... • Screen is black at login screen if display driver is enabled

  I have a Lenovo x200 and recently its screen didn't work, so I took it to a repair lab. The guy told me they replaced the screen inverter. I powered up the laptop and the ThinkPad logo was shown, so I was happy. When I got home the computer would boot up, then instead of the logon screen, I got a black screen. Went to safe mode, disabled the display adapters, reset the computer, and I got a clean boot. Then I tried to reinstall the drivers, and it just led to the same condition. My video card is (from device manager): Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family. Now my laptop works as I'm working with display drivers disabled, but without display drivers I can't watch movies, etc. Any solution to this problem? Edit: I plugged in an external monitor and it works on it with display drivers enabled. However, it does not find the laptop monitor.

• Windows 7: Server disappearing from Network window

  I am running a small (three computer) network on a Windows Server 2003 domain. All of the computers were just upgraded to Windows 7. Since the upgrade, the icon for the domain server periodically disappears from the Network window on all three computers. It doesn't happen at the same time on all computers--the icon typically disappears from one machine, but not the others. And it's not always the same computer. The network connection is still there--I can type \\myserver and get to the network shares. It's simply the icon that's disappearing. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions for a fix?   I'm having trouble with my wifi connection. Is there any software out there that can help me determine if the problem is in the drivers or in the hardware? Regretfully, I'm working on Vista Edit: The problem I'm having is that the Vista reports that the wireless radio is connected, shows an IP and all, the router also shows that the computer is connected, but there's no connectivity. I can't logon to the router, and I can't even ping it. When I ping it I get the response: General Failure I have tried connecting with and without various wireless security protocols. I have tried disabling the wireless adapter and re-enabling it from the Device Manager I have tried updating the driver None of this has helped. When I connect via Ethernet (with a cable, that is), everything works fine. Edit: I'm not using any firewall on the computer, that I'm aware of. The IP address for the WIFI adapter is similar to the one for the LAN adapter. They differ by one.

• Odd internet packet routing

  I want to know is there anyway to explicitly control the packet routing. I try to connect my computer in HK from San Francisco. It is extremely slow and I use tracert to see what is going on. It seems the packet get routed from HK to Europe and then to New York and then to San Francisco. In US, I am using Astound Cable. Is there any suggestion I can force the packet to not go around the world before it reach my computer? Or it is all ISP dependent?

• linux recommendations for older pc

  Hi, I'm new to Linux and I am interested in installing the OS on an older computer I have. I want to setup a webserver and install php, perl. My pc is an older HP Pavillion a255c, Intel Pentium 4 with 512ram. I will probably add some more memory later. This pc is more like a sandbox than anything, but would like to get quickly started with the OS. Is there a particular flavor of linux I would need to download based on my older computer? Any recommendations? I was thinking about Ubuntu but not sure what version to go with. Thanks for your help.

• Getting the PC speaker to beep

  There has been much written on getting the beep sound from Ubuntu releases over the years. Example: fixing the beep My needs are slightly different in that I do not want to ensure sound card beeps are functioning. Instead, I want PC speaker beeps, the kind produced by the original built-in speaker because I believe they will produce less CPU load. I have confirmed that my computer has the PC speaker by unplugging the external speakers and shutting down Ubuntu. At some point in the shutdown and restart process a beep is heard even though the external speakers have no power. I have tried the following: In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf, turn these lines into comments: #blacklist snd_pcsp #blacklist pcspkr In .bashrc /usr/bin/xset b on /usr/bin/xset b 100 Enable in the gnome terminal: Edit Profile Prefs General Terminal Bell Ensure no "mute" selections in: System Prefs Sound various tabs (uncheck them all). Select "Enable window and button sounds" in: System Prefs Sound Sound Effects In gconf-editor desktop gnome sound, select the three sound check boxes. In gconf-editor apps metacity general select the audible bell check box. Still I get no PC speaker beeps when I send code 7 to the console via my Java program or use echo -e '\a' on the bash command line. What else should I try? Update Since my goal is to minimize load on the CPU, here is a comparison of elapsed times. Each test is for 100,000 iterations. • How to switch to a generic kernel in a headless Ubuntu Server 12.04?

  I just got a dedicated server with Ubuntu 12.04 installed with a custom compiled kernel. Since I would like to install VirtualBox and this custom kernel doesn't support dynamic module loading (for security) I need to change the kernel. I'm running some Ubuntu servers for years but never palyed with grub and a headless computer. When the command update-grub is run it shows the different kernel it finds. Here is what I see Generating grub.cfg ... Found linux image: /boot/bzImage-3.2.13-xxxx-grs-ipv6-64 Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-34-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-34-generic No volume groups found done The first one is the active one as seen with uname -r. To me it looks like the second kernel is the one I should use. But I don't know how to configure grub2 to use it. The computer is also configured with a software RAID using mdadm I guess. Never used that before. I don't know if playing with the grub of changing kernel could brake this. What must I do to set the generic kernel as the default one so that I can get VirtualBox running.

• Can't connect to IIS7 on one of my machines

  Hello, I have 2 computers, both running Win7 Professional x64. Computer "A" (192.168.0.10) is my work machine, it contains my tools etc. Computer "B" (192.168.0.15) is supposed to be my build server / web server for my projects I've installed IIS on "B", and installed IIS7 remote manager on "A". I'm trying to connect from A's IIS7 Manager to B's IIS but I fail. I have little knowledge of IIS, and I feel that's the main reason. I can ping B from A and get positive results so the machines do see each other. A and B are in the same workgroup but not in a domain (if that matters) - they're in my home network. What do I need to do to "see" B's IIS?

  Question: Can the major TV producer's internet TV systems access network resource? Info: I'm looking for large TV's right now for my company to set up in conference rooms. We want the ability to load presentations with out having to have a computer to do so. Our hope is to put things on to network drives and access and display them from there. I've heard that LG's can do this if you convert the power point file in to a show format. that's fine. I just need to get this information to the TV with out the computer attached. • crippling repeating "pciehp card not present" notifications

  When using ubuntu (12.04, both installed and on a live usb) I get a lot of these messages: pciehp 0000:00:1c.5:pcie04: Card not present on Slot(37) pciehp 0000:00:1c.5:pcie04: Card present on Slot(37) And with a lot I mean about 20 per second. This has a crippling effect, and I would like to get rid of it :) The computer is a packard bell easynote BG48-U-100 DC. I tip I picked up from some fedora/redhat error here was to look at lspci -vnn. I have pasted the part about "00:1c.5" here: http://pastebin.com/0sfsiqW2 For what good it may do, here is the lsmod of my machine: http://pastebin.com/DQZy1kAL From that first pastebin I think to conclude that it has to do with the module shpchp, which seems to me (aka: google) to have something to do with ACPI. That's as far as I've come in disecting this. Can anyone help me along further? What can I do, check etc? I did see this topic but my intentions are not to surpress the error message: I know how to do this (from that topic ;) ), but I'm looking for a real sollution. Finding the problem on the internet does suspect me to believe it is neither an ubuntu specific nor a packard-bell specific problem.If you google the problem it seems that is present on several other distribution/hardware combo's as well, and it looks like the advice is to remove one of the drivers? I have no clue as to which driver I should look at and and what would be the effect of just removing it. I have seen this topic which is old-ish, but describes my problem and is about a similar computer. The solution in this topic was to compile a new kernel using a spanish guide, which seems a bit extreme to me, so I'm kinda hoping for a better solution than that.

• Windows VPN not authenticating from ADSL to Wireless link

  I have a normal windows VPN on a computer connecting to a 196.201.x.x/24 IP. If this VPN tries to connect from any address in the 41.x.x.x range it cant get there. The server is a normal windows 2008 server, running exchange with a PPPoE IP natted to a public IP on the public gateway of the wireless network as the server is on site and its connectivity is derived from Mikrotik RB's. The computer on the 41 range can traceroute and ping the server, but the VPN does not authenticate. When on the network or any other, the VPN works fine. Is there something that could be configured on the VPN client? All firewall settings of a standard ADSL router have been checked and found to block only ICMP's. Is this a VPN configuration problem or a network issue?

• GRUB2 not working after installing xubuntu 14.04

  I have a vaio laptop and it used to have installed windows 8 and Xubuntu 13.04 in dual boot, everything was working fine. I decided to update my version of xubuntu 14.04 LTS mainly because the support for 13.04 is finished and LTS version have 3 years of support. What I did was to format the partition where xubuntu 13.04 was installed and install 14.04 in that formated partition. When I restarted my computer willing to start using my new system I got the following message: error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found and I was not able to enter any OS. I tried boot-repair from live USB more than two times and it did not fix the problem. I tried to enter to my computer using super GRUB2 disk, however it does not apperar to work with UEFI active (besides super grub2 disk says it can) I only get the message "no operating system found". If I boot super grub2 disk with UEFI disabled, super grub2 disk can not detect any OS,I also tried Rescatux distro, however, as of super grub2 disk, rescatux cannot enter when UEFI is active. I tried boot-repair with the option of "restore EFI backups", after that I was able to boot on windows, but no grub menu appeared. • Failure to Boot Windows 7 after Ubuntu install

  My computer is a (brand new) PC notebook, without a CD drive running Windows 7. I followed this page to install from USB: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStickQuick The installation went well and i am using Ubuntu now (v. 12.04 i believe) I want to be able to dual boot Ubuntu and Win7 The problem is that the disc partitioning during the Linux install caused a problem with Windows, caused some problem with windows, and windows can no longer boot when i choose it at the GNU GRUB screen. When i restart my computer i can successfully boot Linux, but not Windows 7. At the GRUB screen - if i run Win7 normally, it freezes, shows a blue screen, and returns back to GRUB - if i run Win7 recovery, i dont know how to access the files that i need in order to run windows again, so nothing helpful happens. Can you please tell me what i would need to do(or link a guide) in order to run Windows again. (Windows and Linux is preferable, but if thats impossible going back to only Windows will help too) Im guessing the easiest thing to do is just to reinstall both OS, or is there anyway to undo the partition i made during the install? • Port forwarding not working?

  I'm trying to set up an Apache Server to be accessed publicly. I'm using a Netgear R4500 router hooked up to a Motorola SB6121 modem. I can access my server on my computer by typing in my IP address. After following the instructions to forward port 80 so I can access the server from other computers, it does not work (see image). I get "This webpage is not available". I am forwarding to the IP address of my computer. Using this Network Port Scanner Tool, it says "80/tcp filtered http", which, as I understand it, means forwarding did not work correctly. In my Apache httpd file, I have: ServerName 192.168.1.13:80 and Listen 192.168.1.13:80 Anyone know what's wrong or have something I can try? click to enlarge

• Error when adding to the domain : the specified server cannot perform the requested operation

  When we add computers to the domain in Windows 7, we get the error: Changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed. The name will remain "domain.com". The error was: The specified server cannot perform the requested operation. This happens on multiple computers and retrying yields the same result. Despite the error, the computer is still able to login to the domain ok. The DCs are windows 2003. Has anyone found a way to get rid of this error? Any help is appreciated.

• Windows 7 unload driver/disconnect usb before restart

  In xp, my Tascam US 122 usb audio interface works fine. On my windows 7 computer the device works, however when i restart/shutdown it hangs at the "shutting down" screen forever. If the usb cable is removed prior to initiating restart/shutdown then everything goes fine, the computer restarts as normal. This is a known problem, running any other driver in compatibility mode doesnt fix the problem. Is there a method I can use to unload the device/drivers so that I dont have to reach round physically and disconnect the cable. Somebody suggested a spdt switch on the cable itself, but I am looking for a simpler method. Surely I can automate the unloading of the device through a script or such? Any ideas are greatly welcomed thanks

• XP can't read data from transferred HD

  Computer A, running XP, died. XP was installed on a fresh HD in computer B. Slaved data-backup HD from A was installed as slave on B. B will not read it; shows only 2 folders, Recycler and System Volume Info. All of these are older machines with IDE drives. What's going on & how can I read/transfer the data from the transferred drive? This was only a trial run. Actually I will need to transfer the master HD from A - which has XP on it - and read from its data partition because (blush) the backup drive was not up to date.
