(Implying that ALL of them are "formatting methods"... even #3) Reformat using NTFS (quick) Reformat using NTFS Leave the current file-system intact (no changes) What choice #3 really mean? Does it mean: A. Leave the current file-system (whatever file-system is already in use) and reformat to match that. (ie. If you current have NTFS, reformat to that again. If you currently have FAT32, reformat to that again. That is: Reformat without changing to a different file-system. Leave the current type.) or... B. Do absolutely nothing. Don't format. Don't delete any of my files. Abort the formatting process entirely.

  Assume there's this folder structure: D:\ --+-- Acctg --+-- Payable | +-- Receivable | +-- Fin --+-- Inv | +-- Tax | +-- Treas | +-- Mrktg --+-- Ads +-- Promo Users are not allowed to change the structure, but they are free to create & delete files & folders in the leaf nodes (i.e., the rightmost folders). AGDLP principle said that I should assign permissions on the above folders to DL-Groups. Let's say I have a G-Group of users, G-Accounting-Payable, containing users that have access to the D:\Acctg\Payable folder. The way I see it, I have two strategies: - Strategy 1 Create three DL-Groups and assign them permissions: DL-D-Acctg_T -- allowed traversal of D:\Acctg folder DL-D-Acctg-Pay_LF -- allowed listing of D:\Acctg\Payable folder contents DL-D-Acctg-Pay__RW -- allowed full permissions to the contents of D:\Acctg\Payable folder Add G-Accounting-Payable as member to all the above DL-Groups - Strategy 2 Create just one DL-Group DL-D-Acctg-Pay__RW, and assign it the proper permissions for each level of the folder. Then, add G-Accounting-Payable as member to that DL-Group. - Which strategy is the Recommended Best Practice, and why?

• Changing administrator for hosted Exchange account

  We are using a hosted MS Exchange provider, and they claim that our account can only have one administrator. They also claim that they cannot change which login is granted administrator privileges. This means that the user account that was initially created five years ago is the only account that can change our billing information, among other things. The employee associated with the current admin account is no longer with the company, so we'd like to move the admin privileges to a new "sysadmin" account, and delete this employee's account. Shouldn't this be really easy to do? Is my hosted exchange provider telling the truth?

• How to back up a network volume to my Time Capsule?

  I have a Time Capsule that I'm using for my backups. I have a network volume (coincidentally on the same time capsule) that I'd like to back up as well. How can I tell Time Machine to back up network volumes in addition to my main laptop hard drive? PS: yes, I know this setup isn't ideal. It'll incur 2x network overhead when backing up the network volume, plus my data won't be safe in the event of a drive failure since both copies will be on the same disk. However, it will give me some small amount of safety in the event I accidentally delete files on the network volume, among other things.

• VMWare shared folder out of sync

  After booting the guest system, the shared folders are in sync and all works well. But as soon, as I make a change to one of the files on my host system (Windows 7), the file on the guest system (Ubuntu) looses its last characters and still has the old version. So the actual change is not synced. However the version on the guest gets truncated. If I delete the file on the host and create a new one with new content, everything is in sync again. It all started happening when I updated VMWare player 6.0.1. And its happening for my Ubuntu guests only (Redhat works fine). How can I tell VMware tools to force a sync on the shared folders? • Stop jucheck from running

  I've installed Java on Windows Vista, and every day I get a Vista security warning asking me if I want to run "jucheck". Apparently this is the Java automatic updater. Well, I don't want it to run on its own, ever. I cancel it, and quit it. I right-click on the taskbar and unclick "Check for Updates Automatically", and then click "Never Check", and "Apply". And yet, it never remembers this setting. If I come back to the "Java Control Panel" right after clicking "OK", the very same box is checked again, all on its own. Is there some way to kill jucheck once and for all? If I simply delete jucheck.exe, will Java (other than the automatic check) still work, and will manual updates still work, and will it stop even trying to update every morning?

• Suggestions for Troubleshooting WIndows 7 lockups

  I've got a Dell Latitude E6500 that was working fine under Vista x64. I got one of the new Seagate 500GB Hybrid SSD/HD 2.5 drives and thought.. hmm.. let's try Win 7 x64 on it. Bottom line: It works great for hours and then it will hard lock. I don't mean BSOD (or whatever the Win7 equivalent is). I mean my screen is displaying a static image (if there is a clock displayed, it will be frozen at the time the lockup occurred) and the mouse and keyboard do not work. Control-Alt-Delete will not work. I have to hold down the power button to reboot. The event log records NOTHING at the time the lockup occurs. Obviously something is happening to the system to cause the lockup, but the default Windows 7 x64 doesn't log it. How can I log the things Windows doesn't normally log in Event Viewer ?

• Possible to install Xmonad on Ubuntu separate from Gnome?

  I just downloaded Xmonad from the repository on my Ubuntu 10.04 box, but when I log out and try to log back in using Xmonad instead Gnome, it doesn't work. I just get the login screen background image and a mousepointer, and nothing else. Right-clicking does nothing, no menus or anything. Key combo's like Ctrl-X, Ctrl-Z, and Ctrl-Alt-Delete do nothing either. Left the computer in this state for 30 minutes while I went to the grocery store, but it was still hung when I returned and I had to hard-reboot it. A Google search returned a few sites showing how to configure Xmonad to work with Gnome, but I'm afraid to try this since I don't want to risk borking my Gnome installation, at least not until I've had a chance to learn Xmonad a bit. Is it possible to run Xmonad independently of Gnome? If so, anyone have any idea what might be wrong and how to fix it?

• Owner of uploads directory is `www-data` but this prevents FTP access via PHP scripts

  To allow write access to Apache, I needed to chown www-data:www-data /var/www/mysite/uploads to my site's upload folder. This allows me to delete files from the folder via unlink() in a PHP script. Unfortunately, this prevents another PHP script, which uses FTP functions, from working. I think it is because the FTP user is mike and now that the uploads directory is owned by www-data, mike cannot access it. I added mike to the group www-data, but this does not fix the issue. Can somebody advise me on how to allow PHP FTP functions to work in addition to file deletion using PHP's unlink() function?

• Empty track in Windows Media Player 12 that can't be deleted

  Right after I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7, I synced with my DropBox account that contains all of my music and added the directory to Windows Media Player 12. I now have a strange track that really isn't a track at all. It's grouped under "Unknown Artist" and has absolutely no text. The only reason I know it's there is because it highlights on mouse-over. Double-clicking on it does nothing. When the song before it ends, Windows Media Player stops playing altogether until I choose a different song (it should continue to play the next song on its own). When I try to delete this mysterious track, nothing happens. I've cleared my library and re-imported everything, but this empty track keeps appearing. I have also checked my Music directory and there is no empty MP3. What is going on here?

• Configure postfix to filter email into hold queue

  Hey, I would like postfix to send all emails received on SMTP off to an external process, which will decide whether to allow them through as normal, or whether to put them into the hold queue (or another quarantine area), where they have to wait for admin approval. I was thinking of doing this with an after-queue content filter, which uses pipe(8) to run a script on each message, and the script itself will spawn "postsuper -h " if it decides to put the message on hold. Then the admin can do postsuper -d or -r to delete or pass the message on as appropriate. So, my questions are - a) will this work, and b) is this the best way to do it? Would a milter or another type of content filter be a better approach?

• What RSS Reader can handle item-updating (JIRA search) feeds?

  Thunderbird is a good rss reader in terms of being able to connect successfully to jira authenticated search feeds (where evolution-rss and Liferea can't), but really sucks when it comes to updating. A Jira search feed will give a link id to http://jira/browse/[ticket no], and if that ticket/feed-item is updated, thunderbird refuses to update it - it already has it! (even though the item date does not match). Also, if you delete the ticket update, it will never show up again for that news account. Has anybody found an RSS reader that can work with JIRA/updating RSS items? Note: this is not the same as Jira activity feeds - those work great, as each update has a unique item id To replicate: Grab a search (any search) Get it into your rss reader Read an item, modify the linked ticket Update rss and see if the ticket bumps to most recent and unread or, generically: Get an rss feed (from your hard drive?) • Checking whether binary files are the same ?

  What would be the easiest way of veryfying whether two binary files are the same, without actually opening them, checking versions and such in different programs ... ? I primary mean files like 3d models, acad drawings, and the like, of which I have different versions, saved in different directories, and upon completing, I just want to find which are the newest, and which are different from the newest, and delete every other. So far I've thought od md5 ? Any other ideas ? This doesn't actually fit under "diff" tag so feel free to change it, if you can think of a better alternative.

• Can I run AD commands from a standard PowerShell script?

  I am putting together a script to run post-sysprep. It should check if the machine is on the network, and if it is then it should query AD to see if a computer account exists with it's service tag (we're using these as the hostnames of the machines.) If it does exist, it should delete the account and rejoin the machine to the domain. I have got the majority of the script running, but need to run the following: Remove-ADComputer -Identity $distinguishedName How can I run this from the "standard" powershell environment? I don't want to use the AD module. (By the way - I'm on a mixed mode 2000/03 domain as we are in the process of upgrading to 2008) I'm new to PowerShell so be gentle if I'm completely missing the point! Thanks, Ben

• I can't remove a background image in Powerpoint 2007

  Hello Everyone! I have a Powerpoint 2007 document. There is this annoying background graphic in my Powerpoint slide. I know about slide master, but this little bugger is not something that I can delete from slide master. Argh!!!!   We have following setup: mountserver - debian linux fileserver1 - Windows 2008 R2 Storage server fileserver2 - Celerra NS20 exporting CIFS share workstation - windows 7 with mapped drive to share on fileserver2 What we are doing: mounted share from fileserver1 on mountserver, e.g. /shared/fileserver1 mounted share from fileserver2 on mountserver, e.g. /shared/fileserver2 ran rsync on mountserver to sync data from fileserver1 to fileserver2.Used atime as parameter to sync data not older than X after a while tried to delete data older that Y on /shared/fileserver2. From what I see, linux stat command on mountserver returns following when quering file on /shared/fileserver2: At the same time when I open property for the same file using mapped drive connected to fileserver2,I see following for the same file: As you can see, Created date of 12 August shown in Windows Explorer is nowhere to be seen using stat command Am I missing something here?

• Unix: Sync directory with FTP or SFTP directory

  I have a website on my local computer running Mac OS X. I am wondering if there is any built-in command that I can run in the Terminal that will upload that website to my webserver either through FTP or, if possible, SFTP. Installing new commands through MacPorts is also a possibility. A big bonus would be that it only uploaded the files that needs to be updated and not everything else. It would also be nice if I can tell it to delete the files on the server that no longer exists locally once in a while. Any good tips?

• Trouble with installing VMWare-Player 3

  After downloading the VMware-Player 3 from the VMware-Site I wanted to install it; because I used an older VMware-Player the system wanted this to be deinstalled this version first. After starting the deinstallation I had trouble with my machine - shutdown - now I have no proper deinstallation of the older VMware-Player and everytime, I want to install the 3.0, I get an error-message. Is there any possibility, to clean up the rest of the older installation (3-4 processes are still active or are starting again, when I try to close them and therefore I can't delete different .dll-files by hand)? • Multiple test Active Directory envirovments hand in hand with production domain controllers

  What's the best approach of having multiple test environments next to production one? We have multiple programming teams that build solutions that use Active Directory very often. We have tried different approaches, starting with their own domain controllers (in same subnet), or additional OU's in our production AD that the team gets control over and can create/delete accounts within that one OU. We thought of possible 4 solutions: Setting up separate OU's in ou production env. Creating subdomains for our contoso.com domain like test.contoso.com, something.contoso.com and delegating control to the teams (would we need additional DC's or the two that we have already would be enough to hold this? Setting up additional test domain controler that has a trust to our main domain and all teams can use the test domain controler as they please. Setting up single domain controller for every team/project. We're taking in consideration amount of resources needed, security (for example having multiple domain controlers with multiple passwords may lead users to use simpler passwords) and overall best practices for this scenario.

• No network adapter drivers after Windows re-install

  This is a pretty basic question. I got a PC (Packard Bell Easynote TK11-BZ-010BE) that had linux on it, so I thought, just delete the partition and its alright. Well, it wasn't. I went into grub recovery and couldn't do anything, so I re-installed windows again. Now the problem is that everything works expect my network adapter. When I go to device manager, I get that there aren't any driver's for it installed. But without internet, I can't install the so called driver finders. How should I solve this?

• One Way Sync of a Bucket With Local Directory

  I have a local directory that I would like to synchronize with an S3 bucket. I have two specific requirements: If local file is the same as the remote, do not re-transfer it to the bucket. If some files or directories exist in the bucket but do not exist on local, delete them. Basically the bucket should mirror the local copy and not vice-versa. I looked into s3cmd sync command, but unfortunately requirement 2 is not fulfilled. If files exists in the bucket but not on local copy, they will be copied to the local instead of being deleted.
