• Cant correctly install Lazarus

  I have a little problem with installing and running Lazarus. I just upgrade ubuntu from 13.04 to 13.10. When i had 13.04, i could install lazarus without any problems, but in 13.10 lazarus magicaly dissapeared, and when i tried install it from ubuntu software center, it said something like in my software resources lazarus-ide-0.9.30.4 doesnt exist. After some research on net i tried delete all files from earlier installations, download deb packages from sourceforge and install them, but when i want to instal fpc-src, error shows up with output: (Reading database ... 100% (Reading database ... 239063 files and directories currently installed.) Unpacking fpc-src (from .../Stiahnut/Lazarus/fpc-src.deb) ... dpkg: error processing /home/richi/Stiahnut/Lazarus/fpc-src.deb (--install): trying to overwrite '/usr/share/fpcsrc/2.6.2/rtl/nativent/tthread.inc', which is also in package fpc-source-2.6.2 2.6.2-5 dpkg-deb (subprocess): decompressing archive member: internal gzip write error: Broken pipe dpkg-deb: error: subprocess <decompress> returned error exit status 2 dpkg-deb (subprocess): cannot copy archive member from '/home/richi/Stiahnut/Lazarus/fpc-src.deb' to decompressor pipe: failed to write (Broken pipe) when i started lazarus, it of course tell me that it cant find fpc compier and fpc sources. • How to get sound on macbook pro 4,1

  I have just installed Xubuntu 12.04.2. • Subterranean IL: Generics and array covariance

  Arrays in .NET are curious beasts. They are the only built-in collection types in the CLR, and SZ-arrays (single dimension, zero-indexed) have their own commands and IL syntax. One of their stranger properties is they have a kind of built-in covariance long before generic variance was added in .NET 4. However, this causes a subtle but important problem with generics. First of all, we need to briefly recap on array covariance. SZ-array covariance To demonstrate, I'll tweak the classes I introduced in my previous posts: public class IncrementableClass { public int Value; public virtual void Increment(int incrementBy) { Value += incrementBy; } } public class IncrementableClassx2 : IncrementableClass { public override void Increment(int incrementBy) { base.Increment(incrementBy); base.Increment(incrementBy); } } In the CLR, SZ-arrays of reference types are implicitly convertible to arrays of the element's supertypes, all the way up to object (note that this does not apply to value types). That is, an instance of IncrementableClassx2[] can be used wherever a IncrementableClass[] or object[] is required. When an SZ-array could be used in this fashion, a run-time type check is performed when you try to insert an object into the array to make sure you're not trying to insert an instance of IncrementableClass into an IncrementableClassx2[]. This check means that the following code will compile fine but will fail at run-time: IncrementableClass[] array = new IncrementableClassx2[1]; array[0] = new IncrementableClass(); // throws ArrayTypeMismatchException These checks are enforced by the various stelem* and ldelem* il instructions in such a way as to ensure you can't insert a IncrementableClass into a IncrementableClassx2[]. For the rest of this post, however, I'm going to concentrate on the ldelema instruction. ldelema This instruction pops the array index (int32) and array reference (O) off the stack, and pushes a pointer (&) to the corresponding array element. However, unlike the ldelem instruction, the instruction's type argument must match the run-time array type exactly. This is because, once you've got a managed pointer, you can use that pointer to both load and store values in that array element using the ldind* and stind* (load/store indirect) instructions. As the same pointer can be used for both input and output to the array, the type argument to ldelema must be invariant. At the time, this was a perfectly reasonable restriction, and maintained array type-safety within managed code. However, along came generics, and with it the constrained callvirt instruction. We're instantiating the generic method as IncrementArrayValue<IncrementableClass>, but passing in an IncrementableClassx2[], hence the ldelema instruction is failing as it's expecting an IncrementableClass[]. On features and feature conflicts What we've got here is a conflict between existing behaviour (ldelema ensuring type safety on covariant arrays) and new behaviour (managed pointers to object references used for every constrained callvirt on generic type instances). And, although this is an edge case, there is no general workaround. The generic method could be hidden behind several layers of assemblies, wrappers and interfaces that make it a requirement to use array covariance when calling the generic method. Furthermore, this will only fail at runtime, whereas compile-time safety is what generics were designed for! The solution is the readonly. prefix instruction. This modifies the ldelema instruction to ignore the exact type check for arrays of reference types, and so it lets us take the address of array elements using a covariant type to the actual run-time type of the array: .method public static void IncrementArrayValue<(IncrementableClass) T>( !!T[] arr, int32 index) { // arr[index].Increment(1) ldarg.0 ldarg.1 readonly. ldelema !!T ldc.i4.1 constrained. !!T callvirt instance void IIncrementable::Increment(int32) ret } But what about type safety? In return for ignoring the type check, the resulting controlled mutability pointer can only be used in the following situations: As the object parameter to ldfld, ldflda, stfld, call and constrained callvirt instructions As the pointer parameter to ldobj or ldind* As the source parameter to cpobj In other words, the only operations allowed are those that read from the pointer; stind* and similar that alter the pointer itself are banned. This ensures that the array element we're pointing to won't be changed to anything untoward, and so type safety within the array is maintained. This is a typical example of the maxim that whenever you add a feature to a program, you have to consider how that feature interacts with every single one of the existing features. Although an edge case, the readonly. prefix instruction ensures that generics and array covariance work together and that compile-time type safety is maintained.   I’m in the progress of developing a web application. This web application is mostly a CRUD interface, although some users are only allowed to perform some actions and see only some parts of views. What would be a reasonable way to handle user permissions, given that some parts of views are not available to users? I was thinking of having a function hasPermission(permission) that returns true iff the current user has the given permission, although it would require conditionals around all parts of views that are only visible to some users. For example: {% if has_permission('view_location') %} {{ product.location }} {% endif %} I’m fearing this will become an ugly and unreadable mess, especially since these permissions can get kind of complicated. How is this problem commonly solved in web applications? I’m considering using Haskell with Happstack or Python with Django.

• How can I exclude content in my notifications bar from being indexed?

  Of course I want my content to be indexed pretty fast by search engines, however not my notifications bar. My notifications bar contains the last 30 changes to content on the site, and I don't want this to show in my SEO meta. As all the notifications are generic, it often doesn't provide any relevant information. As I said the notifications are generic. If an article named "123" was created, it would create a notification that says "Article "123" was created by xxx at 12:00AM". I'm now wondering if this is a content design problem. As only 1/3 of this information is actually relevant to users (the title, what happened). By SEO meta, and irrelevant notification data being shown, I mean this - Basically what I was wondering, is how I could optimise this, so search engines wouldn't show this generic nonsense.

• Why Google Analytics is displaying wrong landing pages?

  I see all of my pages as Landing Pages in Google Analytics which cannot be true as I did not post those pages anywhere and I don't see any traffic hitting directly to that page. Also, I am using virtual page views on few buttons and I see those virtual pages as Landing pages too. For example, /click/request-a-quote 35000 views 35000 is too big a number to be ignored. Even if I ignore Virtual Pages Views, I see a lot of pages as Landing Pages that I am 100% sure that visitors ( atleast not so many users) are NOT hitting directly. Any advice, how to debug it? • Dashboard to aggregate Google Analytics, Facebook, YouTube etc tracking data?

  I'd like to see as much tracking data as possible about my online presence, in one single dashboard - so views/conversions from Google Analytics data, the performance of my Facebook campaigns via the Insights API, views/clicks from my YouTube campaigns, etc. This could be as simple as a graph with time on the x-axis, and key indicators from each source on the y-axis (conversions from Analytics, likes on Facebook, views on YouTube, etc). The idea is that I can see customer engagement with each source, over time. I can write my own such dashboard easily enough, but I wondered if there was something off-the-shelf that already did this. I am considering targeting other platforms and I want to maintain an much platform neutrality as I can. I have a lot of generic level data in C++ classes. • How do I get drivers working for an Nvidia GT560i on 12.04?

  I been using a test Xubuntu 12.04 LTS on my 64 bit workstation, because Ubuntu has dropped support for the nvidia graphic adapters my 10.04 LTS and I haven't been able to get them working. Now update manager has upgraded the kernel from 3.2.0-30-generic to 3.2.0-31-generic, and failed to produce a working nvidia module that the X server can load. Fortunately, when launching the 3.2.0-30-generic kernel, I still have use of the X server. Does anybody know a work-around or fix for this?   Is there a equivalent of this command; yum list kernel-headers --showduplicates on Ubuntu with apt-get, apt-cache etc. The above command lists various versions of the kernel-headers rpm available on F20/RHEL or installations. • Css clicking problem [migrated]

  I'm building a strange div shaped structure and I need a hint to resolve a clicking problem. This is a jsfiddle to show you the issue. The structure for each element is: <div class="views-row"> <div class="diamonds-container"> CONTENT </div> </div> I have a onclick() event on .diamonds-container but the .views-row div of the next element [with red or blue background..] go over the container and stop the click event on it. I tryed to play with the z-index but I didn't have the expected result. How can I achieve this structure with a correct click event on diamonds-containers ? I think I can track the .views-row click with javascript and trigger manually a click on the previous diamonds-container but this will be my final option. How can I achieve this without javascript?

• Architecture driven by users, or by actions/content?

  I have a question about designing MVC app architecture. Let's say our application has three main categories of views (items of type 1, items of type 2...). And we have three (or more in future) types of users - Admins, let's say Moderators and typical Users. And in the future there might be more of them. Admins have full access to app, Moderators can visit only 2/3 type of items, and Users can visit only basic type of items. Should I divide my controllers/views/whatever like this: Items "A", Items "B", Items "C", then make them 100% finished and at the end add access privileges? Pros: DRY option Cons Conditional expressions in views Or another options: Items "A" / Admin, Items "A" / Moderator / Items "B" Admin ...? Pros: Divided parts of application for specific user (is that pros?) Cons: A lot of repeated code I don't have great experience in planning such things so it would nice if you can give me some tips or links to learn something about it.

• Apache virtualhost - only apply script if file does not exist in document root

I'm wondering if it's possible to set up the following non-conventional apache virtualhost (for a Django app): -- If a file exists in the DocumentRoot (/var/www) it will be shown. So if /var/www/foo.html exists, then it can be seen at www.example.com/foo.html. -- If file does not exist, it is served via a virtualhost. I'm using mod_wsgi with a WSGIScriptAlias directive that points to a Django app. So if there is no /var/www/bar.html, www.example.com/bar.html will be passed to the Django app, which may or may not be a 404 error. One option is to create an Alias for each individual file/directory, but people want to be able to post a file without adding an alias, and we want to keep the above URL structure for legacy reasons. Simplified Virtualhost is: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName www.example.com DocumentRoot /var/www WSGIScriptAlias / /path/to/django.wsgi <Directory /path/to/app> Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> Alias /hi.html /var/www/hi.html </VirtualHost> The goal is to have www.example.com/hi.html work as above, without the Alias line

When I reload the page, I got no output in error logs, nor in the manage.py runfcgi command. I probably missed something obvious, but what ?

• Apache runs in console but not as a service?

  I have an apache 2.2 server running Django. We have a network drive T: which we need constant access to within our Django app. When running Apache as a service, we cannot access this drive, as far as any django code is concerned the drive does not exist. If I add... <Directory "t:/"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride None Order allow,deny allow from all </Directory> to the httpd.conf file the service no longer runs, but I can start apache as a console and it works fine, Django can find the network drive and all is well. Why is there a difference between the console and the service? Should there be a difference? I have the service using my own log on so in theory it should have the same access as I do. I'm keen to keep it running as a service as it's far less obtrusive when I'm working on the server (unless there's a way to hide the console?). Any help would be most appreciated.
