• Acer aspire 5735z wireless not working after upgrade to 11.10

  I cant get my wifi card to work at all after upgrading to 11.10 Oneiric. I'm not sure where to start to fix this. Ive tried using the additional drivers tool but this shows that no additional drivers are needed. Before my upgrade I had a drivers working for the Rt2860 chipset. • Loosely coupled .NET Cache Provider using Dependency Injection

  I have recently been reading the excellent book “Dependency Injection in .NET”, written by Mark Seemann. I do not generally buy software development related books, as I never seem to have the time to read them, but I have found the time to read Mark’s book, and it was time well spent I think. Reading the ideas around Dependency Injection made me realise that the Cache Provider code I wrote about earlier (see http://geekswithblogs.net/Rhames/archive/2011/01/10/using-the-asp.net-cache-to-cache-data-in-a-model.aspx) could be refactored to use Dependency Injection, which should produce cleaner code. The goals are to: Separate the cache provider implementation (using the ASP.NET data cache) from the consumers (loose coupling). This will also mean that the dependency on System.Web for the cache provider does not ripple down into the layers where it is being consumed (such as the domain layer). Provide a decorator pattern to allow a consumer of the cache provider to be implemented separately from the base consumer (i.e. if we have a base repository, we can decorate this with a caching version). Although I used the term repository, in reality the cache consumer could be just about anything. Use constructor injection to provide the Dependency Injection, with a suitable DI container (I use Castle Windsor). The first step is to implement a BlogRepository decorator, with the caching logic in it. Note that this can reside in the domain layer, as it does not require any knowledge of the data access methods. This will make the cache provider functionality available to the repository. I inject the parent IBlogRepository implementation (which has the actual data access code), via the constructor. This will allow the methods implemented in the parent to be called if nothing is found in the cache. I override each of the methods implemented in the repository, including those implemented in the generic BaseRepository. Each override of these methods follows the same pattern. It makes a call to the CacheProvider.Fetch method, and passes in the parentBlogRepository implementation of the method as the retrieval method, to be used if nothing is present in the cache. Configuring the Caching Repository in the DI Container The final piece of the jigsaw is to tell Castle Windsor to use the BlogRepositoryWithCaching implementation of IBlogRepository, but to inject the actual Data Access implementation into this decorator. Now if the consumer of the repository makes a call to the repositories method, it will be routed via the caching mechanism. You can test this by stepping through the code, and seeing that the DataAccess.BlogRepository code is only called if there is no data in the cache, or this has expired. The next step is to add the SQL Cache Dependency support into this pattern, this will be a future post.

• Failling install Ralink RT5592 driver on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

  My problem concerns the installation of a wi-fi driver (RT5592) for my new wi-fi adapter (PCE-N53) on my newly built computer. Basically, I don't manage to get the driver installed and therefore I cannot get the wifi to work. I know I am not the only one having this issue this year, between RT5592 driver and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, in one way or the other. Is there anybody who has ever been able to fix this problem? It does not look like on all the posts I have been through... Following an answer to a same problem as mine (I was getting the same error message as Christopher Kyle Horton of "incompatible types" etc), I have applied the instructions and done the editings in a script as suggested by Paul B. Unfortunately I still do get error/warnings message (a different one this time) at the end of the make and the wi-fi still does not work. If this is a kernel version (I have 3.13.0-32-generic) incompatibility issue with the driver as chilli555 suggests (the README file in the driver package says indeed it is compatible with kernel 2.6), how could one trick this around to make it work? that should be possible right? On ubuntu forums, the patches proposed dont work (leads the computer to freeze). Basically: is there anybody out there who has ever been able to make a PCE-N53 work on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (kernel 3.13)? how shall I edit the driver package to make it work for my kernel?

• How can I back up my ubuntu system?

  I'm sure there's a lot of questions on here similar to this, and I've been reading them, but I still feel this warrants a new question. I want nightly, incremental backups (full disk images would waste a lot of space - unless compressed somehow.) Preferably rotating or deleting old backups when running out of space or after a fixed number of backups. I want to be able to quickly and painlessly restore my system from these backups. This is my first time running ubuntu as my main development machine and I know from my experience with it as a server and in virtual machines that I regularly manage to make it unbootable or damage it to the point of being unable to rescue it. So how would you recommend I do this? There are so many options out there I really don't know where to start. There seems to be a vocal school of thought that it's sufficient to backup your home directory and the list of installed packages from the package manager. I've already installed lots of things from source, or outside of the package manager (development tools, ides, compilers, graphics drivers, etc.) So at the very least, if I do not back up the operating system itself I need to grab all config files, all program binaries, all created but required files, etc. I'd rather backup too much than too little - an ubuntu install is tiny anyway. Also this drastically reduces the restore time, which would cost me more in my time than the extra storage space. • mythbuntu 12 - lirc device doesn't appear to even exist

  I'm trying to get a new installation of Mythbuntu working. So far, everything is OK except the remote. The sensor for the remote is on my Hauppauge WinTV HVR 1250. Any suggestions on how to fix or further diagnose this?

• vmware player xorg driver broke after ubuntu 12.04 LTS automatic system update on 06/07/2014

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS as a virtual machine on a Windows 7 host using vmware player 6.0.2. On Sat. 06/07/2014, Ubuntu performed an automatic system update as it does regularly, however after reboot, the display driver seems to be broken which causes the screen to split into many identical panels. This pretty much rendered the VM unusable. Below is the log entry for that update from /var/log/apt/history.log It appears that at least one of these updates have caused this problem. The exact same problem has been reported on the vmware forum as well, see https://communities.vmware.com/message/2388776#2388776 So far I have not been able so find a solution.   I'm trying to use Enumerable.ToList() in PowerShell. Apparently, to do that, I have to explicitly convert the object to IEnumerable<CustomType>, but I am unable to do that. It seems I can't correctly write IEnumerable<CustomType> in PowerShell. Both IEnumerable<string> and CustomType itself work correctly (the custom type I'm trying to use is called WpApiLib.Page), so I don't know what can I be doing wrong. • Web Application Problems (web.config errors) HTTP 500.19 with IIS7.5 and ASP.NET v2

  This is driving the whole team crazy. There must be some simple mis-configured part of IIS or our Web Server, but every time we try to run out ASP.NET Web Application on IIS 7.5 we get the following error... Here's the error in full: HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. `Detailed Error Information` Module IIS Web Core Notification Unknown Handler Not yet determined Error Code 0x8007000d Config Error Config File \\?\E:\wwwroot\web.config Requested URL http://localhost:80/Default.aspx Physical Path Logon Method Not yet determined Logon User Not yet determined Config Source -1: 0: The machine is running Windows Server 2008 R2. We're developing our Web Application using Visual Studio 2008. According to Microsoft the code 8007000d means there's a syntax error in our web.config -- except the project builds and runs fine locally. Looking at the web.config in XML Notepad doesn't bring up any syntax errors, either. I'm assuming it must be some sort of poor configuration on my part...? Does anyone know where I might find further information about the error? Nothing is showing in EventViewer, either :( Not sure what else would be helpful to mention... I literally have to delete <httpHandlers> (and the lines inbetween) to stop getting the above error. Once I've done this I get a new 500.19 error, however. The new error is also more explicit and specifically complains that it doesn't recognize the attribute "validate" (as seen on the third line above). Removing this attribute then makes it complain that the same line doesn't have the required "name" attribute. Adding this attribute then brings up ASP.NET error... Could not load file or assembly 'System.web.Extensions, Version=1.0.61025.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=f2cb5667dc123a56' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. Obviously I think these new errors have just arisen from me deleting the <httpHandlers> tags in the first place -- they're obviously needed by the application -- so the question remains: Why would these tags kick up an error in IIS in the first place??? Do I need to install something to IIS to make it work with them? Thanks again for any help. WEB.CONFIG Here's the troublesome bits of our web.Config... • Pass or Get a value from Parent ViewModel down to Sub-ViewModel?

  I am using the MVVM Light framework as well as Unity for DI. I have some nested Views, each bound to a corresponding ViewModel. The ViewModels are bound to each View's root control DataContext via the ViewModelLocator idea that Laurent Bugnion has put into MVVM Light. This allows for finding ViewModels via a static resource and for controlling the lifetime of ViewModels via a Dependency Injection framework, in this case Unity. It also allows for Expression Blend to see everything in regard to ViewModels and how to bind them. As I stated the Views have a healthy dose of nesting, but the ViewModels don't really know anything about each other. A parent view binds to its corresponding ViewModel via the static resource ViewModelLocator (which uses Unity to control the construction and lifetime of the ViewModel object). That parent view contains a user control in it that is another sub-view, which then goes and gets its corresponding ViewModel via the ViewModelLocator as well. The ViewModels don't have references to each other or know any hierarchy in regard to each other. So here's an example of how the ViewModels do interact via messaging. I've got a parent View that has a ComboBox databound to an ObservableCollection in its ViewModel. The ComboBox's SelectedItem is also bound (two-way) to a property on the ViewModel. When the selection of the ComboBox changes, this is to trigger updates in other Views and sub-Views. Currently I am accomplishing this via the Messaging system that is found in MVVM Light. So I'm wondering what the best practice would be to get information from one ViewModel to another? In this case, what I need to pass down to sub-ViewModels is basically a user Guid representing the currently logged in user. The top-most parent View (well, ViewModel) will know this information, but I'm not sure how to get it down into the sub-ViewModels. Some possible approaches I can think of: Should the sub-ViewModel ask the static resource ViewModelLocator for a reference to the same object the parent View is using and access the property that way? It seems like ViewModels going through each other's properties is not very clean and couples them together unnecessarily. I'm already using messaging to notify the sub-Views that the user selected a new item in the ComboBox and to update accordingly. But the object type that is being selected in the ComboBox is not really directly related to this data value that the sub-Views need.

Also the lists A and ListB can contain elements of type C(some generic type). Coming to the preconditions 1. ListA can contain only 50 elements of type 'A', rest of the elements can be of generic type C 2. ListB can contain only 50 elements of type 'B', rest of the elements can be of generic type C 3. Also the lists(ListA or ListB) can take at max of 100 elements. 4. ListC can contain elements of generic type C and can take max of 100 elements For ex: Now, If i have 200 elements of type A and 200 elements of type B and 600 elements of type C then i should be able to get 4 Lists(50 elements in each list) of type...ListA (because each ListA can contain at max of 50 elements of type A only, rem 50 is typeC) 4 Lists(50 elements in each list) of type...ListB (because each ListA can contain at max of 50 elements of type B only, rem 50 is typeC) 2 Lists(50 elements in each list) of type...ListC i shall be glad to explain it again if my explanation is quite confusing. Yet as far as I can tell, Kohana's cascading file system requires all Models and Controllers to be placed within a top 'classes' directory, and Views into a top 'views' directory. If Model/Controllers are thus separated from Views at the top level of the file system, then how are we supposed to implement nested MVC-triads?

• Setting up a "cookieless domain" to improve site performance

  I was reading in Google's documentation about improving site speed. One of their recommendations is serving static content (images, css, js, etc.) from a "cookieless domain": Static content, such as images, JS and CSS files, don't need to be accompanied by cookies, as there is no user interaction with these resources. You can decrease request latency by serving static resources from a domain that doesn't serve cookies. Google then says that the best way to do this is to buy a new domain and set it to point to your current one: To reserve a cookieless domain for serving static content, register a new domain name and configure your DNS database with a CNAME record that points the new domain to your existing domain A record. Configure your web server to serve static resources from the new domain, and do not allow any cookies to be set anywhere on this domain. In your web pages, reference the domain name in the URLs for the static resources. This is pretty straight forward stuff, except for the bit where it says to "configure your web server to serve static resources from the new domain, and do not allow any cookies to be set anywhere on this domain". From what I've read, there's no setting in IIS that allows you to say "serve static resources", so how do I prevent ASP.NET from setting cookies on this new domain? At present, even if I'm just requesting a .jpg from the new domain, it sets a cookie on my browser, even though our application's cookies are set to our old domain. For example, ASP.NET sets an ".ASPXANONYMOUS" cookie that (as far as I'm aware) we're not telling it to do. Apologies if this is a real newb question, I'm new at this! Thanks.

Before I used to use ctags and used to run script which creates tag files within the directories of codebase for each clearcase view as a result I can use multiple clearcase views with different codebases at once. But in case of cscope, database is getting created in my home directory as a result I have to build cscope database everytime and not able to use parallely different clearcase views with different codebases. Is there any solution for this problem ??

• Difficulty with apps with a forced landscape orientation

  I have two apps, both of which force the user to use the iPhone in landscape mode, in order to have a wider screen, instead of a taller one. One of the things I have found is that my first view will look fine, but all other views come up with their subviews (UIButtons, UIPicker, UIViews) squeezed to one side or clipped (depending on whether the elements were set to move, resize or stay in the same position as the view size changed). All my views are designed in IB in the landscape orientation. My underlying UIWindow, and everything I can think of has been laid out in landscape orientation. Even my plist file has the UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight flag set. Now, if I load all my views at the same time as my rootview controller, then I have no problems. But if I have views loaded later, they get clipped or squeezed. The only way to get around the problem was to add the following line in my code that flips in a new view: [coming.view setFrame:CGRectMake(0, 0, 480, 300)]; Anyone know why I need to do this? Is it just that the iPhone assumes that loaded views are 300x480 unless a transform gets applied to them? Thanks. ps. This is what the view looks like if I don't call setFrame, as described above: All viewcontrollers that get loaded after the first one will have their screen similarly squeezed down. For some reason the first viewcontroller doesn't have this issue.

• GRUB-2 Bootloader fails to load for lack of floppy drive. Ubuntu 10.4 & Windows XP

  2010.07.21 while trying to install Ubuntu 10.4 Hello all, I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell workstation and am unable to get the Grub-2 bootloader to load properly. It seems to be failing for lack of a floppy drive on the system resulting in an error message that reads : error: fd0 cannot get C/H/S values. I've gone through the Grub-2 page at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2 to no avail and other sources having similar problems have likewise turned up no solutions. I would certainly appreciate any insight, here's the background: A while back I was trying to install a different version of Linux and had the same problems, then had to set the project aside for a bit. I don't think this has anything to do with Linux or Ubuntu per se, but rather Grub. The system is an old (4-5 years) Dell workstation that has one drive (128 GB) set up for Windows XP and a second new drive (500GB) which I installed for Linux. There is a DVD/CD drive and the system contains no floppy drive at all. In one attempt to get this working I tried modifying the BIOS to indicate there was a floppy drive - this created a failure earlier in the chain with the BIOS failing to load properly, not unexpected, just a shot in the dark at that point. At the moment I am considering just running out to buy and install a cheap floppy drive to see if that helps. I'll never use the thing though so I'd rather find a solution that doesn't require me to spend money on useless hardware. • .net Value Class sorting with IComparable

  I'm running into an issue using a DataGridView bound to a iBindingListView implementation (third party dll) attached to a large collection. There's a certain property in my collection type, named MyDateTime, which is a value class similar to DateTime, but also with some legacy code. This VALUE CLASS implements iComparable, iComparable<T>, and iEquatable<T>. The issue I'm having is this: When I apply a sort to the iBindingListView, or the Automatic Sorting provided by the DGV on the MyDateTimeColumn, it ALWAYS uses the non-generic iComparer, causing hundreds of thousands of unnecessary boxing and unboxing. When I remove the non-generic iComparer, the generic one is still not used, it just does a string compare on the .ToString(). Am I missing something? Why is my generic comparer not bieng called on a sort?

  Hello, I am trying to create a file that contains all of the code of an app. I have created a file called catlist.txt so that the files are added in the order I need them. A snippet of my catlist.txt: app/controllers/application_controller.rb app/views/layouts/* app/models/account.rb app/controllers/accounts_controller.rb app/views/accounts/* When I run the command the files that are explicitly listed get added but the wildcard files do not. cat catlist.txt|xargs cat > fullcode I get cat: app/views/layouts/*: No such file or directory cat: app/views/accounts/*: No such file or directory Can someone help me with this. If there is an easier method I am open to all suggestions. Barb

• ASP.NET MVC 2 RC 2 returns Area-specific controller when no area specified

  I have a basic MVC 2 (RC2) site with one base-level controller ("Home"), and one area ("Admin") with one controller ("Abstract"). When i call http://website/Abstract - the Abstract controller in the Admin area gets called even though i haven't specified the Area in the URL. To make matters worse - it doesn't seem to know it's under Admin because it can't find the associated view and just returns: The view 'Index' or its master was not found. The following locations were searched: ~/Views/Abstract/Index.aspx ~/Views/Abstract/Index.ascx ~/Views/Shared/Index.aspx ~/Views/Shared/Index.ascx Am i doing something wrong? Is this a bug? A feature?

  Suppose I defined a structure like this: struct person { char name [10]; int age; }; and declared two person variables: person Bob; person John; where Bob.name = "Bob", Bob.age = 30 and John.name = "John",John.age = 25. and I called Bob = John; struct person would do a Memberwise assignment and assign Johns's member values to Bob's. But arrays can't assign to arrays, so how does the assignment of the "name" array work?
