• Errors when installing Open Office

  I followed the first set of instructions on this page to install Open Office: How to install Open Office? However, the last step which says to change the CHMOD of a folder, I got an error saying that the directory does not exist. Open Office now appears in my Ubuntu start menu, but clicking on it does nothing. I tried a reboot. Below is what I could copy from my terminal. I am running the latest Ubuntu. I have not uninstalled Libreoffice as suggested somewhere. The reason is that in the Ubuntu software centre, Libre office appears to be made up of several components and I don't know which ones to remove (or all maybe?). They are Libreoffice Draw, Math, Writer, Calc. After this operation, 480 MB of additional disk space will be used. • Delphi 2010: whatever happened to TRTTIConstructor?

  I've got two questions (of which at least one is regarding RTTI in D2010 and dynamic instancing) I was reading what appears to be the foils for a conference talk by Barry Kelly, and found on p. 13 something that looked really interesting: TRTTIConstructor.Invoke. In an adjacent bullet point, on finds "Dynamically construct instances without needing virtual constructors and metaclasses". This seems like a great feature (and exactly what I need, btw)! However, when I look in the D2010 docs (ms-help://embarcadero.rs2010/vcl/Rtti.html), I can't find it. Did it get revoked? What is the minimal way of creating an instance of a class, provided the class name is stored in a string?

  I always thought that the return-path header was used for bounced messages, so I have my email newsletter software setup to unsubscribe anyone whose email address replies back to the return-path email address. But recently some users started telling me their out-of-office replies where unsubscribing them. Do out-of-office replies get sent to the return-path on some email servers? I could check all emails to that address and see if they have the "message/delivery-status" content-type in one of the parts, but I wasn't sure if this was necessary.

• How do I change the colors used in MS Word 2007 track changes?

  I'm reviewing a document in MS Word 2007, and when I add comments, the bubble has red text on a slightly lighter red background. This is pretty hard to read. The Track Changes Options dialog isn't of much help, I can change the background color for Comments, and it's slightly more readable. But I know that Word assigns a color to each user who reviews the document, I'd like to be able to change mine to a different one, and still have it work properly when I pass the document on to others. MS help is useless.

  I am trying to connect to the MS SQL database using freetds and unixodbc. I have read various guides how to do it, but no one works fine for me. When I try to connect to the database using isql tool, I get the following error: $ isql -v TS username password [IM002][unixODBC][Driver Manager]Data source name not found, and no default driver specified [ISQL]ERROR: Could not SQLConnect Have anybody already successfully established the connection to the MS SQL database using freetds and unixodbc on Ubuntu 12.04? I would really appreciate some help. Below is the procedure I used to configure the freetds and unixodbc. Thanks for your help in advance! I passed exam 70-630 - TS: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, Configuring and in this posting I will give you a short overview of this very-very easy exam exam. If you are not new to SharePoint Server 2007 and you have some development experiences then this is the easiest exam from Microsoft you have ever seen. There are 51 questions in this exam and two or four of them were not familiar to me. I took me about one hour to prepare for this exam and I got 964 of 1000. Okay, I have some years of experience as SharePoint developer but these questions seemed still too easy for me to be real. I mean based on this exam you cannot accurately say if somebody is able to configure SharePoint Server or not. I think this exam should be very easy also to SharePoint Server administrators who have at least some experience with supporting and maintaining production systems running on SharePoint Server 2007.   During the last Build conference all attendees were given a brand new sparkling exciting Surface RT device (I love that machine despite its name but that's beside the point). On it came a version of Office 2013 RT, or better: the preview version. Now, I translated that term "Preview" to "Beta". Which is OK, since I've been using a lot of beta products from Microsoft and they all were great. And then I wanted to post a blogposting from Word. I knew I could, I have been doing this for a long time (I prefer Live Writer but that isn't available on Windows 8 RT). So I wrote the entry and hit "Publish". Instead of my blogsite I got a nice non-descriptive error telling me I couldn't post. So I fired up my other (Intel based) Win8 tablet, opened Word RT Preview, it loaded my blogpost (you've got to love the automatic synchronization through Skydrive) and tried from that machine. Same error. So, I installed Live Writer (remember, the other machine is Intel based) and posted from there. That worked like a charm. Apparently, there was something wrong with Word. I gave up and didn't think about it anymore. Yet… what you're reading now is written in Word 2013 RT on my Surface RT. So what did do? Simple: I updated from the Preview version to the final version. That's all there was to it. So…. If you're still on the preview I urge you to upgrade. You need to go to the "classic desktop update" window instead of going through the Windows Store App style update since Office is a desktop system, but once you do that you'll have the full version as well.   I'm Marco from Italy and I'd like to ask you a piece of advice about my career. I hold a Ms degree in Biology, I enjoyed a lot studying it and I got very good grades but I didn't know what to do with my degree in the real life. Few months ago, I began to read a book about Python programming (Introduction to Computer Science, Zelle J.) and I've great fun learning Python as a beginner, I wake up in the morning thinking about doing excersies and writing simple programs with python :) I'm also watching free lectures from MIT open courseware, and I'm feeling a certain degree of regrets for never asking myself what was computer science, since it seems to me it's a magic world. After weeks of doubts, I made a move :) I applied for a CS bachelor degree abroad, I got an interview and I'm going to start this great adventure next September. I feel incredibly excited at it, but a little bit scared too. Scared because sometimes I think I'm making a great mistake for my life restarting from a bachelor in a completely different area of study. Sometimes I hear people saying the IT market is bad, sometimes I hear other ones saying quite the opposite instead. Moreover, some colleagues of mine suggested me to try to get into Bioinformatics, instead of CS. My question is: I want to really discover if CS is for me, I mean the passion of my life. I know I'm just a beginner and I can't say nothing about it yet. What do you suggest me: CS or Bioinformatics? If I get a Bs in CS, could I get into bioinformatics without relevant experience, taking into account I have a Ms Biology degree? Any comment is appreciated, thanks in advance.

• Is there a way to save MS Word document as HTML w/o the ms proprietary stuff?

  So normally I wouldn't use this feature ("Save as Web Page") but I have large documents from clients they just want put on their site as HTML, and formatting it all by hand seems like a waste of time. I have tried "save as webpage" in Word 2007, but it produces all sorts of bad stuff. To wit: <b style='mso-bidi-font-weight:normal'> <span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> as well as a large block of XML formatting info: <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:DocumentProperties> <o:Subject> </o:Subject> <o:Author> </o:Author> <o:Keywords> </o:Keywords> ... As I said, formatting it all by hand seems like a waste of time, but the way MS exports currently just has too much cruft. Is there a way to export MS Word doc as html without all this?

• SharePoint 2010 Custom WCF Service - Windows and FBA Authentication

  I have SharePoint 2010 configured for Claims Based Authentication with both Windows and Forms Based Authentication (FBA) for external users. I also need to develop custom WCF Services. The issue is that I want Windows credentials passed into the WCF Service(s); however, I cannot seem to get the Windows credentials passed into the services. My custom WCF service appears to be using Anonymous authentication (which has to be enabled in IIS in order to display the FBA login screen). The example I have tried to follow is found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff521581.aspx. The WCF service gets deployed to _vti_bin (ISAPI folder).   I have created a WCF service with one method which returns a System.Xml.XmlElement: using System.Xml; ... public XmlElement Execute(...) { XmlNode node = ...; return (XmlElement)node; } When I try to access the service deployed on my server WCFServiceClient service = new WCFServiceClient("WSHttpBinding_IWCFService"); XmlElement node = service.Execute(...); I get the error: Cannot implicitly convert type 'System.Xml.Linq.XElement' to 'System.Xml.XmlElement' Searching my service solution, I cannot see any reference to System.Xml.Linq.XElement. Is it wrong of me to expect a System.Xml.Xmlelement or is VS 2010 fooling around with me? Thanks in advance.

• CS1685 Warning causes a CS0433 error when targeting 3.5 in VS2010

  I have a 2010 project that is targeting .NET v3.5. It was working fine until I started to mess with configurations a bit and now I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. The project doesn't have ANY references added. It won't even let me add a reference to System.Core as it is added by the 'build system'. warning CS1685: The predefined type 'System.Func' is defined in multiple assemblies in the global alias; using definition from 'c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\mscorlib.dll' IFilter.cs(82,49): error CS0433: The type 'System.Func' exists in both 'c:\Program Files (x86)\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework\v3.5\System.Core.dll' and 'c:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\mscorlib.dll' Looks like something is grabbing onto 4.0 but I'm not quite sure how to fix it. Any one else run into this?

  I just was playing with EF 4 in VS 2010 RC and just found that ApplyCurrentValues dont work when the Property is of type bool and the newly value is false !!!??? and it works when the newly value is true . • Custom app_offline.htm file during publish

  When I publish my ASP.NET MVC application it generates a app_offline.htm file to take the site offline while it updates the website and then deletes the file once the publish is successful. This is cool and I really like the idea, but I want to create my own custom app_offline.htm file that the publish action is aware of and put it somewhere where it doesn't effect my development site - i.e. it doesn't sit in the root of my development site rendering it offline all the time. TIA, Charles EDIT: From the comments on Scott Gu's post about app_offline.htm, it seems that customization of the app_offline.htm file wasn't possible with VS 2005 - has this changed with VS 2008 and now VS 2010?

  I have been succesfully using the command line database deployment tool VSDBCMD on my dev and test environments but the tool fails in our integration environmrnt. I am using the VS 2010 version of the tool. The servers have all of the prerequisites including: .net 4.0 sql server compact edition 3.5 sp1 (as well as the full edition of 2008) sql server 2008 server management objects sql server 2008 native client sql server system clr types msxml 6 all of the dependent DLLs included in: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5\desktop*.dll C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5*.dll C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\VSTSDB\Deploy**. The only reference to this error that I have been able to find has to do with a bug in the VS 2008 edition when the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0 key is missing. In my case the 10.0 version of the key exists. Has anyone else encountered this?

  If this question has been asked then I applogize and I will join in voting to close it (or just delete it), but I could not find it being asked before. We are potentially embarking on making many of our apps using WPF. Most of our apps are normal business apps that will not need too much eye candy. Tasteful ui is nice, but I don't see us doing lost of custom animations and such. So, my question is what 3rd party control sets are the best ones to purchase to save you time in development of apps like this? (These should work with both Visual Studio 2008 and 2010.)

  Hello, I was looking through the folder for an application I am working on and noticed the "ipch" folder, for my solution which has two small projects it weighs in at about 90mb+ in size. I have found an article discussing the use for the files and was wondering if they were safe to delete? It's for an assignment hand in and I would like to keep the electronic hand in as small as possible. If I were to delete the folder will the application remain in a safe and stable state? • Should I suppress CA1062: Validate arguments of public methods?

  I've recently upgraded my project to Visual Studio 2010 from Visual Studio 2008. In Visual Studio 2008, this Code Analysis rule doesn't exist. Now I'm not sure if I should use this rule or not. I'm building an open source library so it seems important to keep people safe from doing mistakes. However, if all I'm going to do is throw ArgumentNullException when the parameter is null, it seems like writing useless code since ArgumentNullException will be thrown even if I won't write that code. Should I remove that rule or fix the violations?
