  • Problems with Threading in Python 2.5, KeyError: 51, Help debugging?

    I have a python script which runs a particular script large number of times (for monte carlo purpose) and the way I have scripted it is that, I queue up the script the desired number of times it should be run then I spawn threads and each thread runs the script once and again when its done. Once the script in a particular thread is finished, the output is written to a file by accessing a lock (so my guess was that only one thread accesses the lock at a given time). Once the lock is released by one thread, the next thread accesses it and adds its output to the previously written file and rewrites it. I am not facing a problem when the number of iterations is small like 10 or 20 but when its large like 50 or 150, python returns a KeyError: 51 telling me element doesn't exist and the error it points out to is within the lock which puzzles me since only one thread should access the lock at once and I do not expect an error. This is the class I use: class errorclass(threading.Thread): def __init__(self, queue): self.__queue=queue threading.Thread.__init__(self) def run(self): while 1: item = self.__queue.get() if item is None: break result = myfunction() lock = threading.RLock() lock.acquire() ADD entries from current thread to entries in file and REWRITE FILE lock.release() queue = Queue.Queue() for i in range(threads): errorclass(queue).start() for i in range(desired iterations): queue.put(i) for i in range(threads): queue.put(None) Python returns with KeyError: 51 for large number of desired iterations during the adding/write file operation after lock access, I am wondering if this is the correct way to use the lock since every thread has a lock operation rather than every thread accessing a shared lock? What would be the way to rectify this?

    Right not my implementation returns the thing by value. The member m_MyObj itself is not const - it's value changes depending on what the user selects with a Combo Box. I am no C++ guru, but I want to do this right. If I simply stick a & in front of GetChosenSourceSystem in both decl. and impl., I get one sort of compiler error. If I do one but not another - another error. If I do return &m_MyObj;. I will not list the errors here for now, unless there is a strong demand for it. I assume that an experienced C++ coder can tell what is going on here. I could omit constness or reference, but I want to make it tight and learn in the process as well.   • Stuck with the math in a Flash project, would parsing engine help?

    I've been stuck with the math in a Flash project? It's a loose design pattern my director formulated. My goal is to keep the project object oriented, and get 'non Flash obstacles' off my plate. Do you recommend using parsing engines for processing math? XML values going to AS3, updating a changing acceleration formula. I don't hate math, but it just doesn't seem OOP or good project planning to have the math stuck in Flash. Your comments are welcome.

    I am facing a couple of problems while writing an auto-memoizer in Scheme. I have a working memoizer function, which creats a hash table and checks if the value is already computed. If it has been computed before then it returns the value else it calls the function. (define (memoizer fun) (let ((a-table (make-hash))) (?(n) (define false-if-fail (?() #f)) (let ((return-val (hash-ref a-table n false-if-fail))) (if return-val return-val (begin (hash-set! a-table n (fun n)) (hash-ref a-table n))))))) Now I want to create a memoize-wrapper function like this: (define (memoize-wrapper function) (set! function (memoizer function))) And hopefully create a macro called def-memo which defines the function with the memoize-wrapper. eg. the macro could expand to (memoizer (define function-name arguments body ...) or something like that. So that I should be able to do : (def-memo (factorial n) (cond ((= n 1) 1) (else (* n (factorial (- n 1)))))) which should create a memoized version of the factorial instead of the normal slow one. My problem is that the The memoize-wrapper is not working properly, it doesnt call the memoized function but the original function. I have no idea how to write a define inside of the macro. How do I make sure that I can get variable lenght arguments and variable length body? How do I then define the function and wrap it around with the memoizer? Thanks a lot.

  • Linq. Help me tune this!

    I have a linq query that is causing some timeout issues. Basically, I have a query that is returning the top 100 results from a table that has approximately 500,000 records. Here is the query: using (var dc = CreateContext()) { var accounts = string.IsNullOrEmpty(searchText) ? dc.Genealogy_Accounts .Where(a => a.Genealogy_AccountClass.Searchable) .OrderByDescending(a => a.ID) .Take(100) : dc.Genealogy_Accounts .Where(a => (a.Code.StartsWith(searchText) || a.Name.StartsWith(searchText)) && a.Genealogy_AccountClass.Searchable) .OrderBy(a => a.Code) .Take(100); return accounts.Select(a => } } Oddly enough it is the first linq query that is causing the timeout. I thought that by doing a 'Take' we wouldn't need to scan all 500k of records. However, that must be what is happening. I'm guessing that the join to find what is 'searchable' is causing the issue. I'm not able to denormalize the tables... so I'm wondering if there is a way to rewrite the linq query to get it to return quicker... or if I should just write this query as a Stored Procedure (and if so, what might it look like).     I'm using HTML5 geolocation to collect the users lat / long and I need to figure out what their postal code is as well. I have a database of all the lat / long for each postal code in the US & Canada. How can I write a query to find out what their postal code is? Below, is an example of how the data is structured in the 'zips' table. Country PostalCode Latitude Longitude USA 0051 40.813078 -73.046388 USA 00616 18.426456 -66.673779 I can't do a 'SELECT PostalCode FROM zips WHERE Latitude = user.lat AND Longitude = user.long'. I believe I need to find the nearest lat / long. Any suggestions on how I can write this?

    Ok I have a table in my MSSQL database that stores comments. My desire is to be able to page though the records using [Back],[Next], page numbers & [Last] buttons in my datalist. I figured the most efficient way was to use a stored procedure that only returns a certain number of rows within a partcular range. Here is what I came up with @PageIndex INT, @PageSize INT, @postid int AS SET NOCOUNT ON begin WITH tmp AS ( SELECT comments.*, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY dateposted ASC) AS Row FROM comments WHERE (comments.postid = @postid)) SELECT tmp.* FROM tmp WHERE Row between (@PageIndex - 1) * @PageSize + 1 and @PageIndex*@PageSize end RETURN Now everything works fine and I have been able implement [Next] and [Back] buttons in my datalist pager.Now I need the total number of all comments(not in the cuurent page) so that I can implement my page numbers and the[Last] button on my pager. In other words I want to return the total number of rows in my first select statement i.e WITH tmp AS ( SELECT comments.*, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY dateposted ASC) AS Row FROM comments WHERE (comments.postid = @postid)) set @TotalRows = @@rowcount @@rowcount doesnt work and raises an error.I also cant get count.* to work either. Is there another way to get the total amount of rows or is my approach doomed.

But, when I go to look at each table (with tbl_cursor), it always picks up the tables in the database 'master'.   • I need help understanding what Exercise 5-12 is asking for in the C Programming Language book.

    K&R C Programming Language: pg. 105 Extend entab and detab to accept the shorthand entab -m +n to mean tab stops every n columns, starting at column m. entab replaces a number of spaces with a tab character and detab does the opposite. The question I have concerns the tab stops and entab. I figure that for detab it's pretty easy to determine the number of spaces needed to reach the next tab stop, so no worries there. With entab, replacing spaces with tabs is slightly more difficult since I cannot for sure know how large the tab character goes to its own tab stop (unless there is a way to know for sure). Am I even thinking about this thing properly?
