  • Need help with implementing collision detection using the Separating Axis Theorem

    - by Eddie Ringle
    So, after hours of Googling and reading, I've found that the basic process of detecting a collision using SAT is: for each edge of poly A project A and B onto the normal for this edge if intervals do not overlap, return false end for for each edge of poly B project A and B onto the normal for this edge if intervals do not overlap, return false end for However, as many ways as I try to implement this in code, I just cannot get it to detect the collision. My current code is as follows: for (unsigned int i = 0; i < asteroids.size(); i++) { if (asteroids.valid(i)) { asteroids[i]->Update(); // Player-Asteroid collision detection bool collision = true; SDL_Rect asteroidBox = asteroids[i]->boundingBox; // Bullet-Asteroid collision detection for (unsigned int j = 0; j < player.bullets.size(); j++) { if (player.bullets.valid(j)) { Bullet b = player.bullets[j]; collision = true; if (b.x + (b.w / 2.0f) < asteroidBox.x - (asteroidBox.w / 2.0f)) collision = false; if (b.x - (b.w / 2.0f) > asteroidBox.x + (asteroidBox.w / 2.0f)) collision = false; if (b.y - (b.h / 2.0f) > asteroidBox.y + (asteroidBox.h / 2.0f)) collision = false; if (b.y + (b.h / 2.0f) < asteroidBox.y - (asteroidBox.h / 2.0f)) collision = false; if (collision) { bool realCollision = false; float min1, max1, min2, max2; // Create a list of vertices for the bullet CrissCross::Data::LList<Vector2D *> bullVerts; bullVerts.insert(new Vector2D(b.x - b.w / 2.0f, b.y + b.h / 2.0f)); bullVerts.insert(new Vector2D(b.x - b.w / 2.0f, b.y - b.h / 2.0f)); bullVerts.insert(new Vector2D(b.x + b.w / 2.0f, b.y - b.h / 2.0f)); bullVerts.insert(new Vector2D(b.x + b.w / 2.0f, b.y + b.h / 2.0f)); // Create a list of vectors of the edges of the bullet and the asteroid CrissCross::Data::LList<Vector2D *> bullEdges; CrissCross::Data::LList<Vector2D *> asteroidEdges; for (int k = 0; k < 4; k++) { int n = (k == 3) ? 0 : k + 1; bullEdges.insert(new Vector2D(bullVerts[k]->x - bullVerts[n]->x, bullVerts[k]->y - bullVerts[n]->y)); asteroidEdges.insert(new Vector2D(asteroids[i]->vertices[k]->x - asteroids[i]->vertices[n]->x, asteroids[i]->vertices[k]->y - asteroids[i]->vertices[n]->y)); } for (unsigned int k = 0; k < asteroidEdges.size(); k++) { Vector2D *axis = asteroidEdges[k]->getPerpendicular(); min1 = max1 = axis->dotProduct(asteroids[i]->vertices[0]); for (unsigned int l = 1; l < asteroids[i]->vertices.size(); l++) { float test = axis->dotProduct(asteroids[i]->vertices[l]); min1 = (test < min1) ? test : min1; max1 = (test > max1) ? test : max1; } min2 = max2 = axis->dotProduct(bullVerts[0]); for (unsigned int l = 1; l < bullVerts.size(); l++) { float test = axis->dotProduct(bullVerts[l]); min2 = (test < min2) ? test : min2; max2 = (test > max2) ? test : max2; } delete axis; axis = NULL; if ( (min1 - max2) > 0 || (min2 - max1) > 0 ) { realCollision = false; break; } else { realCollision = true; } } if (realCollision == false) { for (unsigned int k = 0; k < bullEdges.size(); k++) { Vector2D *axis = bullEdges[k]->getPerpendicular(); min1 = max1 = axis->dotProduct(asteroids[i]->vertices[0]); for (unsigned int l = 1; l < asteroids[i]->vertices.size(); l++) { float test = axis->dotProduct(asteroids[i]->vertices[l]); min1 = (test < min1) ? test : min1; max1 = (test > max1) ? test : max1; } min2 = max2 = axis->dotProduct(bullVerts[0]); for (unsigned int l = 1; l < bullVerts.size(); l++) { float test = axis->dotProduct(bullVerts[l]); min2 = (test < min2) ? test : min2; max2 = (test > max2) ? test : max2; } delete axis; axis = NULL; if ( (min1 - max2) > 0 || (min2 - max1) > 0 ) { realCollision = false; break; } else { realCollision = true; } } } if (realCollision) { player.bullets.remove(j); int numAsteroids; float newDegree; srand ( j + asteroidBox.x ); if ( asteroids[i]->degree == 90.0f ) { if ( rand() % 2 == 1 ) { numAsteroids = 3; newDegree = 30.0f; } else { numAsteroids = 2; newDegree = 45.0f; } for ( int k = 0; k < numAsteroids; k++) asteroids.insert(new Asteroid(asteroidBox.x + (10 * k), asteroidBox.y + (10 * k), newDegree)); } delete asteroids[i]; asteroids.remove(i); } while (bullVerts.size()) { delete bullVerts[0]; bullVerts.remove(0); } while (bullEdges.size()) { delete bullEdges[0]; bullEdges.remove(0); } while (asteroidEdges.size()) { delete asteroidEdges[0]; asteroidEdges.remove(0); } } } } } } bullEdges is a list of vectors of the edges of a bullet, asteroidEdges is similar, and bullVerts and asteroids[i].vertices are, obviously, lists of vectors of each vertex for the respective bullet or asteroid. Honestly, I'm not looking for code corrections, just a fresh set of eyes.

  • What are suitable performance indicators for programmers?

    - by Graphain
Hi, I am wondering what performance indicators people encounter, and think are realistic, for programmers in the workplace? I've seen numerous articles (I can't recall a really good one that I read right now) that detail how programmers will optimise for the metric they are being measured by (whether that be lines of code etc.). However, is there any metric that can be used as a good performance indicator of a programmer in the workplace, and conversely be used as a milestone by a programmer when negotiating with management? Replies Thanks for the link to that one and good feedback so far!

  • Dotnet website - class in one file can't access class in a different file

    - by bmutch
I've inherited a web site I'm editing in dotnet and it won't compile because the class in one file (say class1.vb) refers to a class in another file (say class2) (like Dim m_c As class2) , but the compiler says "Type Class2 is not defined". when I look in the object browswer the classes are listed separately (i.e. not all grouped under the same namespace) and appear as: Public Class Class1 Inherits System.Object Member of C:...\mywebsite\ Help!, thanks.

  • Applying different Cascade Style Sheets to the same html page

    - by Noona
To apply a CSS to an existing html page I need to add a link that links to the css file, I am asked to include a link in the webpage that I am building that would link to the same html page but with a different css file, I am thinking I need to create a different css file, then create another .html page by copy the exact content from the first page and only change the link of the css file, but it doesn't seem so efficient and I am assuming there should be a standard method to do this. thanks

  • Store html form on client or server while building?

    - by Brett
Hi, I have a fairly complex html form enhanced via jquery. It has multiple tabs, within each one things like a html form builder, uploads, descriptions. There is lots of data, and as the user flicks around the various tabs I'm thinking of posting the data to the server. For example, the form builder, has about 10 properties for each field, as the user flicks between the various fields, an ajax request saves the current values, then loads a new set from the new field clicked on. When the user hits save, the idea is then on the server all these bits and pieces come together and become the live version (i may store them as a temp version while the user is working away). So I guess my question is, for complex forms where the same fields are re-used within the one form, does anyone attempt to save all this data locally and upload it in one hit or do most of you do little ajax post's and compile it all when the final save button is hit? b

  • 2D World design question

    - by Maciek
I'm facing a problem which is probably extremely common in game-design. Let's assume that we've got a 2D world The world's size is M x N rect The world may contain some items in it The items have (x,y) coords The world can be browsed via a window that is physically (m x n) large. The browser window can be zoomed in / out The browser window can be panned up/down + left right, while in the extents of the world's rect. How should I go about implementing this? I'm especially concerned about the browser window. Can anyone recommend any good reads ? This is not a homework - it's more of a task which I've set myself to complete.

  • Suggestions for designing large-scale Java webapp from the ground up

    - by Chris Thompson
Hi all, I'm about to start developing a large-scale system and I'm struggling with which direction to proceed. I've done plenty of Java web apps before and I have plenty of experience with servlet containers and GWT and some experience with Spring. The problem is most of my webapps have been thrown together just to be a proof of concept and what I'm struggling with is what set of frameworks to use. I need to have both a browser based application as well as a web service designed to support access from mobile devices (Android and iPhone for now). Ideally, I'd like to design this system in such a way that I don't end up rewriting all of my servlets for each client (browser and phone) although I don't mind having some small checks in there to properly format the data. In addition, although I'm the only developer now, that won't necessarily be the case down the road and I'd like to design something that scales well both with regards to traffic and number of developers (isn't just a nightmare to maintain). So where I am now is planning on using GWT to design the browser-based interface but I'm struggling with how to reuse that code with to present the interface (most likely xml) for the mobile devices. Using GWT RPC would, I think, make it relatively easy to do all of the AJAX in the browser, but might make generating xml for the mobile phones difficult. In addition, I like the idea of using something like Hibernate for persistence and Spring Security to secure the whole thing. Again, I'm not sure how well those will cooperate with GWT (I think Hibernate should be fine...) There's obviously a lot more to this than I've presented here, but I've tried to give you the 5-minute overview. I'm a bit stumped and was wondering if anybody in the community had any experience starting from this place. Does what I'm trying to do make sense? Is it realistic? I have no doubt I can make all of these frameworks speak the same language, I'm just wondering if it's worth my time to fight with them. Also, am I missing a framework that would be really beneficial? Thanks in advance and sorry for the relatively broad question... Chris

  • Will rel=canonical break site: queries ?

    - by Justin Grant
Our company publishes our software product's documentation using a custom-built content management system using a dynamic URL namespace like this: http://ourproduct.com/documentation/version/pageid Where "version" is the version number to which the documentation applies, and "pageid" is a unique string which identifies that page in our back-end content management system. For example, if content (e.g. a page about configuration best practices) is unchanged from version 3.0 and 4.0 of our product, it'd be reachable by two different URLs: http://ourproduct.com/documentation/3.0/configuration-best-practices http://ourproduct.com/documentation/4.0/configuration-best-practices This URL scheme allows us to scope Google search results to see only documentaiton for a particular product version, like this: configuration site:ourproduct.com/documentation/4.0 But when the user is searching across all versions, we don't want Google to arbitrarily choose one of the URLs to show in results. Instead, we always want the latest version to show up. Hence our planned use of rel=canonical so we can proscriptively tell Google which URL we want to show up if multiple versions are being searched. (Users who do oddball things like searching 2 versions but not all of them are a corner case, so we don't care which version(s) show up in that case-- the primary use-cases we care about is searching one version or searching all versions) But what will happen to scoped searches if we do this? If my rel=canonical URL points to version 4.0, but my search is scoped to 3.0, will Google return a result? Even if you don't know the answer offhand, do you know a site which uses rel=canonical to redirect across folders in a URL namespace. If so, I could run a few Google searches and figure out the answer.

  • Why does the ID of Google's OpenID implementation change?

    - by Andrea
I'm trying to implement OpenId login for a web application. Whenever new user who logs in via OpenId I create a new user on the sustem, and among the data I store their openid URL, so that next time they login with that user. I'm testing this with my Gmail OpenID, and the problem is that everytime I do this, Google sends a different openid URL, that is, https://www.google.com/accounts/o8/id?id=SomethingThatChangesFromTimeToTime Of course I'm then not able to tell wheter this is or not a new user. I'm a bit puzzled: shouldn't the openid identifier always remain the same?

  • Java: Netbeans debugging session works faster than normal run

    - by Martijn Courteaux
Hello, I'm making Braid in Netbeans 6.7.1. Computer Spec: Windows 7 Running processes: 46 Running threads: +/- 650 NVidia GeForce 9200M GS Intel Core 2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26Ghz Game-spec with normal run: Memory: between 80 MB and 110 MB CPU: between 9% and 20% CPU when time rewinding: 90% The same values for the debugging session, except when I rewind the time: CPU: 20%. Is there any reason for? Is there a way to reach the same performance with a normal run. This is my repaint code: @Override public void repaint() { BufferStrategy bs = getBufferStrategy(); // numBuffers: 4 Graphics g = bs.getDrawGraphics(); g.setColor(Color.BLACK); g.fillRect(-1, -1, 2000, 2000); gamePanel.paint(g.create(x, y, gameDim.width, gameDim.height)); bs.show(); g.dispose(); Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().sync(); update(g); } The game runs in fullscreen (undecorated + frame.size = screensize) Martijn

  • Computer Quiz Management Software

    - by Asad Jibran Ahmed
My university is holding a quiz contest in 2 weeks, and I need some sort of software (desktop or web based) that can be used to manage the quiz. I need functionality like an admin panel for adding teams, creating matches between 2 teams, adding questions and answers. I then need the software to automatically display the questions, accept answers, and display and store results. Is there any software (open source/freeware) that I can use for this task. If a pre-built software is not available, which language+library+platform would you suggest I make the software in. It can be either web based or a desktop app. But I need it by 2 weeks. Any suggestions?

  • advice on working on remote asp.net applications

    - by Jonesy
Hi folks, I'm a (relatively new) developer using asp.net with VB.NET. Currently all my applications are developed on my PC and then are built and moved onto the web server. I'm going to be working remotely for 3 months in which time I'll be connecting to the company network via VPN. What is the best way to access my projects? I need to have the projects stored on the company network so that others can access them too. So simply copying the projects to my laptop, working on them, then copying them back won't suffice. I tried to just open the projects off of the network share but am getting application trust problems. I'm just wondering what other developers do in this situation? Jonesy

  • What process does professional website building follow?

    - by Sivvy
I've searched for a while, but I can't find anything related on Google or here. Me and some friends were debating starting a company, so I figure it might be good to do a quick pilot project to see how well we can work together. We have a designer who can do HTML, CSS and Flash, enjoys doing art, but doesn't like to do HTML and CSS... And 2 programmers that are willing to do anything. My question is, from an experienced site builder's perspective, what steps do we do - in chronological order - to properly handle a website? Does the designer design the look and feel of the site, then the programmers fill in the gaps with functionality? Or do the programmers create a "mock-up" of the site with most of the functionality, then the designer spices it up? Or is it more of a back-and-forth process? I just want to know how a professional normally handles it.

  • What's the best way to detect web applications attacks ?

    - by paulgreg
What is the best way to survey and detect bad users behavior or attacks like deny of services or exploits on my web app ? I know server's statistics (like Awstats) are very useful for that kind of purpose, specially to see 3XX, 4XX and 5XX errors (here's an Awstats example page) which are often bots or bad intentioned users that try well-known bad or malformed URLs. Is there others (and betters) ways to analyze and detect that kind of attack tentative ? Note : I'm speaking about URL based attacks, not attacks on server's component (like database or TCP/IP).

  • What is a programmer's life like?

    - by Zee JollyRoger
Imagine like an 8-hour long video of any "typical/average" programming job. What is it like? Before I get myself involved in that path, what can I expect? I am interested in gathering first-hand information and accounts of the typical life of a programmer. My goal is to grasp the fundamental concepts of working in the professional field of programming. I just want to "see" into what it is/means to come to an entry-level programming job and program. See what kind of skills, mentality, expectations, and such are required.

  • How to disable mod_security2 rule (false positive) for one domain on centos 5

    - by nicholas.alipaz
Hi I have mod_security enabled on a centos5 server and one of the rules is keeping a user from posting some text on a form. The text is legitimate but it has the words 'create' and an html <table> tag later in it so it is causing a false positive. The error I am receiving is below: [Sun Apr 25 20:36:53 2010] [error] [client 76.171.171.xxx] ModSecurity: Access denied with code 500 (phase 2). Pattern match "((alter|create|drop)[[:space:]]+(column|database|procedure|table)|delete[[:space:]]+from|update.+set.+=)" at ARGS:body. What file do I create and where? How should I alter this rule? Can I set it to only be allowed for the one domain, since it is the only one having the issue on this dedicated server or is there a better way to exclude table tags perhaps? Thanks guys

  • How do you handle browser cache with login/logout?

    - by Julien
To improve performances, I'd like to add a fairly long Cache-Control (up to 30 minutes) to each page since they do not change often. However, each page also displays the name of the user logged in (like this website). The problem is when the user logs in or logs out: the user name must change. How can I change the user name after each login/logout action while keeping a long Cache-Control? Here are the solutions I can think of: Ajax request (not cached) to retrieve and display the user name. If I have 2 requests (/user?registered and /user?new), they could be cached as well. But I am afraid this extra request would nullify my caching performance-wise Add a unique URL variable (?time=) to make the URL different, and cancel the cache. However, I would have to add this variable to all links on my webpage, not very convenient code-wise This problems becomes greater if I actually have more content that is not the same for registered users and new users.

  • What do I need to write a small game on Linux?

    - by Michas
I want to make a simple game: 2d, single-player, without tons of animations and special effects. I am not interested in ready to use game engines, I want to learn to write some code in a quite universal language. I am using Linux (AMD64) and looking for something easy with nice library for games. I do not want to mix few languages, most of them are in fact fast enough themselves for my needs. Cross platform would be an advantage, however all I need is a good Linux support. I have been considering few solutions. Ruby + Language looks very nice. + I am going to learn Ruby. - I am afraid I can have problems with additional libraries. - This thread about game libraries for Ruby could be longer. SDL + C + It is used for games. + It is very easy to set up. + There is a lot of additional libraries. + It is cross-platform. - The solution is quite low level. - The language is sometimes quite hard to read. QT + C++ + It is very easy to set up. + The standard QT libraries supports everything I can possibly need. + It is cross-platform. + The documentation is good. - The compilation is slow. - The language looks horrible. - The size of standard QT libraries is too big to comprehend. Environment of web browser + I am going to learn something more about this environment. + It is somewhat used for games. + It is quite cross-platform. - It would be too much experimental. Java + It is used for games. + The standard Java libraries supports everything I can possibly need. + It is cross-platform. - It is quite hard to set up. - The size of standard Java libraries is too big to comprehend. - The source code in Java could look better. - I think I do not want to learn Java. Google Go + I am going to learn Google Go. - There is big problem with libraries. - The solution would be quite low level. Python + It looks some people do games in Python, according to this thread. + It looks there are probably more libraries than for Ruby. - The Ruby language looks better. - I think I do not want to learn Python. C++ + something else + It is used for games. + It would be probably cross-platform. + There is a lot of libraries. - I do not need C++ extensions over C. - Compilation could be slow, there are fast compilers for C, not for C++. Haskell + I am going to learn Haskell. - Many things about programming computer games looks too much imperative. - It looks I can have some problems with libraries. - Compilation (GHC) looks slow. There is probably something more to consider. Does anyone have experience in making small games for Linux in non mainstream solutions? Does anyone have an advice for me?

  • Colspan in IE7/8 not respected

    - by Stefan Kendall
The DOM looks like this: <table> <tr> <td>a</td>...<td>g</td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="3"> <table> ... </table> </td> </tr> <tr> <td></td>...<td></td> </tr> </table> Any idea why this wouldn't work in IE? I tried setting width:auto on the TD holding the inner table, and table-layout:fixed isn't viable because the tabular data is generated dynamically. What could be going wrong?

  • Rounded Corners Image Change on Hover

    - by Sarfraz
Hello, I created a rounded box/button and sliced its first corner, the middle bar (which repeats horizontally to adjust the width of the button text/content) and the last corner and used following markup: <div id="left-corner"></div> <div id="middle-bar">About Us</div> <div id="right-corner"></div> These divs have corresponding images from CSS and are floated left. Those three divs create a single rounded button wiht text About Us which is fine. Problem: I have also created similar three slices of hover images but I wonder how to apply hover to those buttons because if I use :hover with these hovered slices, then even hovering on corner images also creates hovering effect. One alternative is to use fixed width buttons and slice buttons completely but I do not want to do that.
