• Searching for flexible way to specify conenction string used by APS.NET membership

- by bzamfir
Hi, I develop an asp.net web application and I use ASP.NET membership provider. The application uses the membership schema and all required objects inside main application database However, during development I have to switch to various databases, for different development and testing scenarios. For this I have an external connection strings section file and also an external appsettings section, which allow me to not change main web.config but switch the db easily, by changing setting only in appsettings section. My files are as below: <connectionStrings configSource="connections.config"> </connectionStrings> <appSettings file="local.config"> .... ConnectionStrings looks as usual: <connectionStrings> <add name="MyDB1" connectionString="..." ... /> <add name="MyDB2" connectionString="..." ... /> .... </connectionStrings> And local.config as below <appSettings> <add key="ConnectionString" value="MyDB2" /> My code takes into account to use this connection string But membership settings in web.config contains the connection string name directly into the setting, like <add name="MembershipProvider" connectionStringName="MyDB2" ...> .... <add name="RoleProvider" connectionStringName="MyDB2" ...> Because of this, every time I have to edit them too to use the new db. Is there any way to config membership provider to use an appsetting to select db connection for membership db? Or to "redirect" it to read connection setting from somewhere else? Or at least to have this in some external file (like local.config) Maybe is some easy way to wrap asp.net membership provider intio my own provider which will just read connection string from where I want and pass it to original membership provider, and then just delegate the whole membership functionality to asp.net membership provider. Thanks.

• Problem with JSONResult

- by vikitor
Hi, I' still newby to this so I'll try to explain what I'm doing. Basically what I want is to load a dropdownlist depending on the value of a previous one, and I want it to load the data and appear when the other one is changed. This is the code I've written in my controller: public ActionResult GetClassesSearch(bool ajax, string phylumID, string kingdom){ IList<TaxClass> lists = null; int _phylumID = int.Parse(phylumID); int _kingdom = int.Parse(kingdom); lists = _taxon.getClassByPhylumSearch(_phylumID, _kingdom); return Json(lists.count); } and this is how I call the method from the javascript function: function loadClasses(_phylum) { var phylum = _phylum.value; $.getJSON("/Suspension/GetClassesSearch/", { ajax: true, phylumID: phylum, kingdom: kingdom }, function(data) { alert(data); alert('no fallo') document.getElementById("pClass").style.display = "block"; document.getElementById("sClass").options[0] = new Option("-select-", "0", true, true); //for (i = 0; i < data.length; i++) { // $('#sClass').addOption(data[i].classID, data[i].className); //} }); } The thing is that just like this it works, I pass the function the number of classes within a selected phylum, and it displays the pclass element, the problem gets when I try to populate the slist with data (which should contain the objects retrieved from the database), because when there is data returned by the database changing return Json(lists) instead of return Json(lists.count) I keep getting the same error: A circular reference was detected while serializing an object of type 'SubSonic.Schema.DatabaseColumn'. I've been going round and round debugging and making tests but I can't make it work, and it is suppossed to be a simple thing, but I'm missing something. I have commented the for loop because I'm not quite sure if that's the way you access the data, because I've not been able to make it work when it finds records. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance, Victor

• Multithreaded search with UISearchDisplayController

- by Kulpreet
I'm sort of new to any sort of multithreading and simply can't seem to get a simple search method working on a background thread properly. Everything seems to be in order with an NSAutoreleasePool and the UI being updated on the main thread. The app doesn't crash and does perform a search in the background but the search results yield the several of the same items several times depending on how fast I type it in. The search works properly without the multithreading (which is commented out), but is very slow because of the large amounts of data I am working with. Here's the code: - (void)filterContentForSearchText:(NSString*)searchText { NSAutoreleasePool *apool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; isSearching = YES; //[self.filteredListContent removeAllObjects]; // First clear the filtered array. for (Entry *entry in appDelegate.entries) { NSComparisonResult result = [entry.item compare:searchText options:(NSCaseInsensitiveSearch|NSDiacriticInsensitiveSearch) range:NSMakeRange(0, [searchText length])]; if (result == NSOrderedSame) { [self.filteredListContent addObject:entry]; } } isSearching=NO; [self.searchDisplayController.searchResultsTableView performSelectorOnMainThread:(@selector(reloadData)) withObject:nil waitUntilDone:NO]; //[self.searchDisplayController.searchResultsTableView reloadData]; [apool drain]; } - (BOOL)searchDisplayController:(UISearchDisplayController *)controller shouldReloadTableForSearchString:(NSString *)searchString { [NSObject cancelPreviousPerformRequestsWithTarget:self selector:@selector(filteredListContent:) object:searchString]; [self.filteredListContent removeAllObjects]; // First clear the filtered array. [self performSelectorInBackground:(@selector(filterContentForSearchText:)) withObject:searchString]; //[self filterContentForSearchText:searchString]; // Return YES to cause the search result table view to be reloaded. return NO; }

• (fluent) nhibernate conditional table mapping strategy

- by grenade
I have no control over database schema and have the following (simplified) table structure: CityProfile Id Name CountryProfile Id Name RegionProfile Id Name I have a .Net enum and class encapsulating the lot: public enum Scope { Region, Country, City } public class Profile { public Scope Scope { get; set; } public int Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } } I am looking for a mechanism that allows me to map to the correct table, something like: public class ProfileMap : ClassMap<Profile> { public ProfileMap() { switch (x => x.Scope) { // <--Invalid code here! case Scope.City: Table("CityProfile"); break; case Scope.Country: Table("CountryProfile"); break; case Scope.Region: Table("RegionProfile"); break; } Id(x => x.Id); Map(x => x.Name); } } Or have I approached this wrong?

• How can parallelism affect number of results?

- by spender
I have a fairly complex query that looks something like this: create table Items(SomeOtherTableID int,SomeField int) create table SomeOtherTable(Id int,GroupID int) with cte1 as ( select SomeOtherTableID,COUNT(*) SubItemCount from Items t where t.SomeField is not null group by SomeOtherTableID ),cte2 as ( select tc.SomeOtherTableID,ROW_NUMBER() over (partition by a.GroupID order by tc.SubItemCount desc) SubItemRank from Items t inner join SomeOtherTable a on a.Id=t.SomeOtherTableID inner join cte1 tc on tc.SomeOtherTableID=t.SomeOtherTableID where t.SomeField is not null ),cte3 as ( select SomeOtherTableID from cte2 where SubItemRank=1 ) select * from cte3 t1 inner join cte3 t2 on t1.SomeOtherTableID<t2.SomeOtherTableID option (maxdop 1) The query is such that cte3 is filled with 6222 distinct results. In the final select, I am performing a cross join on cte3 with itself, (so that I can compare every value in the table with every other value in the table at a later point). Notice the final line : option (maxdop 1) Apparently, this switches off parallelism. So, with 6222 results rows in cte3, I would expect (6222*6221)/2, or 19353531 results in the subsequent cross joining select, and with the final maxdop line in place, that is indeed the case. However, when I remove the maxdop line, the number of results jumps to 19380454. I have 4 cores on my dev box. WTF? Can anyone explain why this is? Do I need to reconsider previous queries that cross join in this way?

• Objective C / iPhone comparing 2 CLLocations /GPS coordinates

- by user289503
have an app that finds your GPS location successfully, but I need to be able to compare that GPS with a list of GPS locations, if both are the same , then you get a bonus. I thought I had it working, but it seems not. I have 'newLocation' as the location where you are, I think the problem is that I need to be able to seperate the long and lat data of newLocation. So far ive tried this: Code: NSString *latitudeVar = [[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"%g°", newLocation.coordinate.latitude]; NSString *longitudeVar = [[NSString alloc] initWithFormat:@"%g°", newLocation.coordinate.longitude]; An example of the list of GPS locations: Code: location:(CLLocation*)newLocation; CLLocationCoordinate2D bonusOne; bonusOne.latitude = 37.331689; bonusOne.longitude = -122.030731; and then Code: if (latitudeVar == bonusOne.latitude && longitudeVar == bonusOne.longitude) { UIAlertView *alert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle:@"infinite loop firday" message:@"infloop" delegate:nil cancelButtonTitle:@"Stinky" otherButtonTitles:nil ]; [alert show]; [alert release]; this comes up with an error 'invalid operands to binary == have strut NSstring and CLlocationDegrees' Any thoughts?

• How to generating comments in hbm2java created POJO?

- by jschoen
My current setup using hibernate uses the hibernate.reveng.xml file to generate the various hbm.xml files. Which are then turned into POJOs using hbm2java. We spent some time while designing our schema, to place some pretty decent descriptions on the Tables and there columns. I am able to pull these descriptions into the hbm.xml files when generating them using hbm2jhbmxml. So I get something similar to this: <class name="test.Person" table="PERSONS"> <comment>The comment about the PERSONS table.</comment> <property name="firstName" type="string"> <column name="FIRST_NAME" length="100" not-null="true"> <comment>The first name of this person.</comment> </column> </property> <property name="middleInitial" type="string"> <column name="MIDDLE_INITIAL" length="1"> <comment>The middle initial of this person.</comment> </column> </property> <property name="lastName" type="string"> <column name="LAST_NAME" length="100"> <comment>The last name of this person.</comment> </column> </property> </class> So how do I tell hbm2java to pull and place these comments in the created Java files? I have read over this about editing the freemarker templates to change the way code is generated. I under stand the concept, but it was not to detailed about what else you could do with it beyond there example of pre and post conditions.

• Pass table as parameter to SQLCLR TV-UDF

- by Skeolan
We have a third-party DLL that can operate on a DataTable of source information and generate some useful values, and we're trying to hook it up through SQLCLR to be callable as a table-valued UDF in SQL Server 2008. Taking the concept here one step further, I would like to program a CLR Table-Valued Function that operates on a table of source data from the DB. I'm pretty sure I understand what needs to happen on the T-SQL side of things; but, what should the method signature look like in the .NET (C#) code? What would be the parameter datatype for "table data from SQL Server?" e.g. /* Setup */ CREATE TYPE InTableType AS TABLE (LocationName VARCHAR(50), Lat FLOAT, Lon FLOAT) GO CREATE TYPE OutTableType AS TABLE (LocationName VARCHAR(50), NeighborName VARCHAR(50), Distance FLOAT) GO CREATE ASSEMBLY myCLRAssembly FROM 'D:\assemblies\myCLR_UDFs.dll' WITH PERMISSION_SET = EXTERNAL_ACCESS GO CREATE FUNCTION GetDistances(@locations InTableType) RETURNS OutTableType AS EXTERNAL NAME myCLRAssembly.GeoDistance.SQLCLRInitMethod GO /* Execution */ DECLARE @myTable InTableType INSERT INTO @myTable(LocationName, Lat, Lon) VALUES('aaa', -50.0, -20.0) INSERT INTO @myTable(LocationName, Lat, Lon) VALUES('bbb', -20.0, -50.0) SELECT * FROM @myTable DECLARE @myResult OutTableType INSERT INTO @myResult MyCLRTVFunction @myTable --returns a table result calculated using the input The lat/lon - distance thing is a silly example that should of course be better handled entirely in SQL; but I hope it illustrates the general intent of table-in - table-out through a table-valued UDF tied to a SQLCLR assembly. I am not certain this is possible; what would the SQLCLRInitMethod method signature look like in the C#? public class GeoDistance { [SqlFunction(FillRowMethodName = "FillRow")] public static IEnumerable SQLCLRInitMethod(<appropriateType> myInputData) { //... } public static void FillRow(...) { //... } } If it's not possible, I know I can use a "context connection=true" SQL connection within the C# code to have the CLR component query for the necessary data given the relevant keys; but that's sensitive to changes in the DB schema. So I hope to just have SQL bundle up all the source data and pass it to the function. Bonus question - assuming this works at all, would it also work with more than one input table?

• Java and tomcat vs ASP.NET and IIS

- by Mark Cooper
Until recently I'd considered myself to be a pretty good web programmer (coming up for 10yrs commercial experience on a variety of e-commerce, static and enterprise applications). I'm self taught and have always used the Microsoft product stack (ASP, ASP.NET)... My applications are always functional, relatively bug free, but have never been lightening quick. As a frequent web user I always found this to be the norm... how fast are the websites from the big tech players (eBay, Facebook, Microsoft, IBM, Dell, Telerik etc etc) - in truth none are particularly fast. I always attributed this to "the way things are with web apps"... ...then I cam across a product called Jira from atlasian and this has stopped me in my tracks... This application is fast, and I mean blindingly fast.. too fast to time the switches between pages, fully live content, lots of images and data and cross references etc etc... I run this on an intranet, with a large application DB, and this is running on a very normal server (single processor, SATA HDD, 8GB RAM). Am I missing something?? Are my programming techniques that bad?? I am wondering if this speed gain is down to it being written in Java and running on Tomcat. Does anyone have any benchmarks to compare JSP / ASP or Tomcat / IIS??? Thanks, Mark NOTE: this isn't a blatant plug for Jira. I don't work for them or have any affiliation to them... but I would like to be able to write applications like them :)

• CF9 HQL Statement for many-to-many and Multiple Criteria

My guess is that the solution is pretty simple and I am just over-thinking it...anyone have any suggestions?

• Is there a workaround for JDBC w/liquibase and MySQL session variables & client side SQL instructions

- by David
Slowly building a starter changeSet xml file for one of three of my employer's primary schema's. The only show stopper has been incorporating the sizable library of MySQL stored procedures to be managed by liquibase. One sproc has been somewhat of a pain to deal with: The first few statements go like use TargetSchema; select "-- explanatory inline comment thats actually useful --" into vDummy; set @@session.sql_mode='TRADITIONAL' ; drop procedure if exists adm_delete_stats ; delimiter $$ create procedure adm_delete_stats( ...rest of sproc I cut out the use statement as its counter-productive, but real issue is the set @@session.sql_mode statement which causes an exception like liquibase.exception.MigrationFailedException: Migration failed for change set ./foobarSchema/sprocs/adm_delete_stats.xml::1293560556-151::dward_autogen dward: Reason: liquibase.exception.DatabaseException: Error executing SQL ... And then the delimiter statement is another stumbling block. Doing do dilligence research I found this rejected MySQL bug report here and this MySQL forum thread that goes a little bit more in depth to the problem here. Is there anyway I can use the sproc scripts that currently exist with Liquibase or would I have to re-write several hundred stored procedures? I've tried createProcedure, sqlFile, and sql liquibase tags without much luck as I think the core issue is that set, delimiter, and similar SQL commands are meant to be interpreted and acted upon by the client side interpreter before being delivered to the server.

• What should be the responsibility of a presenter here?

- by Achu
I have a 3 layer design. (UI / BLL / DAL) UI = ASP.NET MVC In my view I have collection of products for a category. Example: Product 1, Product 2 etc.. A user able to select or remove (by selecting check box) product’s from the view, finally save as a collection when user submit these changes. With this 3 layer design how this product collection will be saved? How the filtering of products (removal and addition) to the category object? Here are my options. (A) It is the responsibility of the controller then the pseudo Code would be Find products that the user selected or removed and compare with existing records. Add or delete that collection to category object. Call SaveCategory(category); // BLL CALL Here the first 2 process steps occurs in the controller. (B) It is the responsibility of BLL then pseudo Code would be Collect products what ever user selected SaveCategory(category, products); // BLL CALL Here it's up to the SaveCategory (BLL) to decide what products should be removed and added to the database. Thanks

• Can YAML have inheritance?

- by Jason
This question involves a lot of symfony but it should be easy enough for someone to follow who only knows YAML and not symfony. My symfony models come from a three-step process: First, I create the tables in MySQL. Second, I run a symfony command (symfony doctrine:build-schema) to convert my table structure into a YAML file. Third, I run another symfony command (symfony doctrine:build-model) to convert the YAML file into PHP code. Here's the problem: there are some tables in the database that I don't want to end up in my symfony code. For example, let's say I have two tables: one called my_table and another called wordpress. The YAML file I end up with might look like this: MyTable: connection: doctrine tableName: my_table Wordpress: connection: doctrine tableName: wordpress That's great except the wordpress table has nothing to do with my symfony models. The result is that every single time I make a change to my database and generate this YAML file, I have to manually remove wordpress. It's annoying! I'd like to be able to create a file called baseConfig.php or something that looks like this: $config = array( 'MyTable' => array( 'connection' => 'doctrine', 'tableName' => 'my_table', ), 'Wordpress' => array( 'connection' => 'doctrine', 'tableName' => 'wordpress', ), ); And then I could have a separate file called config.php or something where I could make modifications to the base config: unset($config['Wordpress']); So my question is: is there any way to convert YAML into executable PHP code (as opposed to load YAML INTO PHP code like what sfYaml::load() does) to achieve this sort of thing? Or is there maybe some other way to achieve YAML inheritance? Thanks, Jason

• complex sql which runs extremely slow when the query has order by clause

- by basit.
I have following complex query which I need to use. When I run it, it takes 30 to 40 seconds. But if I remove the order by clause, it takes 0.0317 sec to return the result, which is really fast compare to 30 sec or 40. select DISTINCT media.* , username from album as album , album_permission as permission , user as user, media as media where ((media.album_id = album.album_id and album.private = 'yes' and album.album_id = permission.album_id and (permission.email = '' or permission.user_id = '') ) or (media.album_id = album.album_id and album.private = 'no' ) or media.album_id = '0' ) and media.user_id = user.user_id and media.media_type = 'video' order by media.id DESC LIMIT 0,20 The id on order by is primary key which is indexed too. So I don't know what is the problem. I also have album and album permission table, just to check if media is public or private, if private then check if user has permission or not. I was thinking maybe that is causing the issue. What if I did this in sub query, would that work better? Also can someone help me write that sub query, if that is the solution? If you can't help write it, just at least tell me. I'm really going crazy with this issue.. SOLUTION MAYBE Yes, I think sub-query would be best solution for this, because the following query runs at 0.0022 seconds. But I'm not sure if validation of an album would be accurate or not, please check. select media.*, username from media as media , user as user where media.user_id = user.user_id and media.media_type = 'video' and media.id in (select media2.id from media as media2 , album as album , album_permission as permission where ((media2.album_id = album.album_id and album.private = 'yes' and album.album_id = permission.album_id and (permission.email = '' or permission.user_id = '')) or (media.album_id = album.album_id and album.private = 'no' ) or media.album_id = '0' ) and media.album_id = media2.album_id ) order by media.id DESC LIMIT 0,20

• MySQL Connector for .NET - Is it REALLY mature?

- by effkay
After spending a miserable month with MySQL/.NET/EntityFramework, my findings: Support for Entity Framework is VERY primitive, please use it for student-subjects type of database. Kindly do not consider it using for serious development as they ARE STILL unable to sort out VERY BASIC things like: it DOES NOT support unsigned stuff it DOES NOT support unsigned columns as FK; if you try, it gives you a beautiful exception; "The specified value is not an instance of a valid constant type\r\nParameter name: value" [http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=44801] blob cannot store more then few KB; cannot compare null object with a column with a LEGAL null value [http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=49936] they are unable to write VERY PRIMITIVE check to return date as null if value in column is 0000-00-00 00:00:00 if you use Visual Studio; sorry; mysql/sun guys hate Microsoft, they will NOT LET you import more then two or three tables (for Micky Mouse type of tables, they allow five; but thats it) - if you try, it will throw TIME OUT error on your face ... unless you are smart enough to change the connection time in connection string Anyone who would like to add in above list? WISH I would have seen a list like this before I selected MySQL :(

• Table design issues - should I create separate fields or store as a blob

- by Ali
Hi guys I'm working on my web based ordering system and we would like to maintain a kind of task history for each of our orders. A hsitory in the sense that we would like to maintain a log of who did what on an order like lets say an order has been entered - we would like to know if the order was acknowledged for an example. Or lets say somebody followed up on the order - etc. Consider that there are numerous situations like this for each order would it be wise to create a schema on the lines of: Orders ID - title - description - date - is_ack - is_follow - ack_by ..... That accounts to a lot of fields - on teh other hand I could have one LongText field called 'history' and fill it with a serialised object holding all the information. However in the latter case I can't run a query to lets say retrieve all orders that have not been acknowledged and stuff like that. With time requirements woudl change and I would be required to modify it to allow for more detailed tracking and that is why I need to set up a way which would be feasible to scale upon yet I don't want to be restricted on the SQL side too much.

• JSF 2.0: Validate equality of 2 InputSecret Fields (confirm password) without writing Code?

- by yournamehere
I'm developing a pure JavaEE6 application with JSF 2.0 and Glassfish. My JSF implementation is Primefaces (beside Mojarra provided by Glassfish). I want to verify if the values of 2 password fields in a JSF form are equal. With Seam, there is the neat component <s:validateEquality for="pw1"/>. I want do to the same without Seam, just using JSF (or maybe a component of a JSF library). Until now i only saw examples which validate the form with a custom validator. But i would like to compare the fields without writing Java code or Javascript code. Is that possible? This what it looks like with Seam: ... <h:inputSecret id="passwort" value="#{personHome.instance.password}" redisplay="true" required="true"> <f:validateLength minimum="8"/> <a:support event="onblur" reRender="passwortField" bypassUpdates="true" ajaxSingle="true" /> </h:inputSecret> ... <h:inputSecret id="passwort2" required="true" redisplay="true"> <!-- find the JSF2.0-equivalent to this tag: --> <s:validateEquality for="passwort"/> <a:support event="onblur" reRender="passwort2Field" bypassUpdates="true" ajaxSingle="true" /> </h:inputSecret> ... Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

• MDX equivalent to SQL subqueries with aggregation

- by James Lampe
I'm new to MDX and trying to solve the following problem. Investigated calculated members, subselects, scope statements, etc but can't quite get it to do what I want. Let's say I'm trying to come up with the MDX equivalent to the following SQL query: SELECT SUM(netMarketValue) net, SUM(CASE WHEN netMarketValue > 0 THEN netMarketValue ELSE 0 END) assets, SUM(CASE WHEN netMarketValue < 0 THEN netMarketValue ELSE 0 END) liabilities, SUM(ABS(netMarketValue)) gross someEntity1 FROM ( SELECT SUM(marketValue) netMarketValue, someEntity1, someEntity2 FROM <some set of tables> GROUP BY someEntity1, someEntity2) t GROUP BY someEntity1 In other words, I have an account ledger where I hide internal offsetting transactions (within someEntity2), then calculate assets & liabilities after aggregating them by someEntity2. Then I want to see the grand total of those assets & liabilities aggregated by the bigger entity, someEntity1. In my MDX schema I'd presumably have a cube with dimensions for someEntity1 & someEntity2, and marketValue would be my fact table/measure. I suppose i could create another DSV that did what my subquery does (calculating net), and simply create a cube with that as my measure dimension, but I wonder if there is a better way. I'd rather not have 2 cubes (one for these net calculations and another to go to a lower level of granularity for other use cases), since it will be a lot of duplicate info in my database. These will be very large cubes.

• What is the best Binary Decision Diagram library for Java?

- by reprogrammer
A Binary Decision Diagram (BDD) is a data structure to represent boolean functions. I'd like use this data structure in a Java program. My search for Java based BDD libraries resulted into the following packages. Java Decision Diagram Libraries JavaBDD JDD JBDD bddbddb If you know of any other BDD libraries available for Java programs, please let me know so that I add it to the list above. If you have used any of these libraries, please tell me about your experience with the library. In particular, I'd like you to compare the available libraries along the following dimensions. Quality. Is the library mature and reasonably bug free? Performance. How do you evaluate the performance of the library? Support. Could you easily get support whenever you encountered a problem with the library? Was the library well documented? Ease of use. Was the API well designed? Could you install and use the library quickly and easily? Please mention the version of the library that you are evaluating.

• Troubleshooting PG Function

- by Grasper
I have this function: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION CREATE_AIRSPACE_AVAILABILITY_RECORD (cur_user VARCHAR, start_time VARCHAR, start_date VARCHAR, end_time VARCHAR, end_date VARCHAR, airspace_name VARCHAR) RETURNS VOID AS ' DECLARE c_user ALIAS for $1; BEGIN IF start_time IS NULL OR start_date IS NULL OR end_time IS NULL OR end_date IS NULL THEN INSERT INTO c_user.AIRSPACE_AVAILABILITY (ASP_AIRSPACE_NM, ASA_TIME_ID, ASA_START_DT, ASA_END_DT) SELECT airspace_name, 1, ABP.ABP_START_DT, ABP.ABP_STOP_DT FROM ABP WHERE EXISTS (SELECT ASP.ASP_AIRSPACE_NM FROM AIRSPACE ASP WHERE ASP.ASP_AIRSPACE_NM = airspace_name); ELSIF start_time IS NOT NULL AND start_date IS NOT NULL AND end_time IS NOT NULL AND end_date IS NOT NULL THEN INSERT INTO c_user.AIRSPACE_AVAILABILITY (ASP_AIRSPACE_NM, ASA_TIME_ID, ASA_START_DT, ASA_END_DT) SELECT airspace_name, 1, TO_DATE(start_date||start_time,''YYMMDDHH24MI''), TO_DATE(end_date||end_time,''YYMMDDHH24MI'') FROM DUAL WHERE EXISTS (SELECT ASP.ASP_AIRSPACE_NM FROM c_user.AIRSPACE ASP WHERE ASP.ASP_AIRSPACE_NM = airspace_name); END IF; END ; ' LANGUAGE plpgsql; I try calling it like so: select * from CREATE_AIRSPACE_AVAILABILITY_RECORD('user1','','','','',''); and I get this error: ERROR: schema "c_user" does not exist SQL state: 3F000 Context: SQL statement "INSERT INTO c_user.AIRSPACE_AVAILABILITY (ASP_AIRSPACE_NM, ASA_TIME_ID, ASA_START_DT, ASA_END_DT) SELECT $1 , 1, TO_DATE( $2 || $3 ,'YYMMDDHH24MI'), TO_DATE( $4 || $5 ,'YYMMDDHH24MI') FROM DUAL WHERE EXISTS (SELECT ASP.ASP_AIRSPACE_NM FROM c_user.AIRSPACE ASP WHERE ASP.ASP_AIRSPACE_NM = $1 )" PL/pgSQL function "create_airspace_availability_record" line 23 at SQL statement Why isn't c_user being replaced with my param (user1)?

• Assert.AreEqual to not fail when comparing an enum and an int

- by codingbear
I'm not sure if this is doable, but I will just give a shot. I am calling Assert.AreEqual() method. For the parameters, I'm passing... an enum value which has Int32 as the underlying type because I didn't specify the base type an int (Int32) value Assert fails because it sees that the enum is not int (which is definitely correct). However, is there a way to make this Assert pass when the enum has the correct int value as the 2nd parameter? I can cast the enum to int and have it a quick fix, but it's really ugly. I was expecting some kind of overriding a method that Assert uses to compare 2 different objects and implicitly make that enum type look like an int. However, I wasn't successful at finding any hint/answer around that so far. Someone suggested to create a type converter and use the TypeConverterAttribute to get around. If this works for sure and is the only way to do it, I would; however, it does seem a lot of unnecessary work.

• Replacing XML reserved characters in SQL Server 2005

- by Barn
I'm working on a system that takes relational data from a sql server DB and uses SSIS to produce an XML extract using sql server 2005's 'FOR XML PATH' command and a schema. The problem lies with replacing the XML reserved characters. 'FOR XML PATH' is only replacing <, , and &, not ' and ", so I need a way of replacing these myself. I've tried pre-processing the fields in the database to replace XML reserved characters with their entitised equivalents (e.g. & becomes &), but once these fields are used to construct XML using FOR XML the leading & is replaced with &, so I end up with & where I should have &. What I've tried so far is altering the element's contents after the XML has been constructed using XQuery inside SQL server like so: DECLARE @data VARCHAR(MAX) SET @data = CONVERT(VARCHAR(MAX), [my xml column].query(' data(/root/node_i_want)') SELECT @data = [function to replace quotes etc](@data) SET [my xml column].modify('replace value of (/root/node_i_want)[1] with sql:variable("@data")') but I get the same problem. Essentially, is there something wrong I'm doing with the above, or a way to tell FOR XML to entitise other characters, or something like that? Basically anything short of having to write a program to change the XML after it has been assembled in large batches and saved to files!

• Database warehouse design: fact tables and dimension tables

- by morpheous
I am building a poor man's data warehouse using a RDBMS. I have identified the key 'attributes' to be recorded as: sex (true/false) demographic classification (A, B, C etc) place of birth date of birth weight (recorded daily): The fact that is being recorded My requirements are to be able to run 'OLAP' queries that allow me to: 'slice and dice' 'drill up/down' the data and generally, be able to view the data from different perspectives After reading up on this topic area, the general consensus seems to be that this is best implemented using dimension tables rather than normalized tables. Assuming that this assertion is true (i.e. the solution is best implemented using fact and dimension tables), I would like to seek some help in the design of these tables. 'Natural' (or obvious) dimensions are: Date dimension Geographical location Which have hierarchical attributes. However, I am struggling with how to model the following fields: sex (true/false) demographic classification (A, B, C etc) The reason I am struggling with these fields is that: They have no obvious hierarchical attributes which will aid aggregation (AFAIA) - which suggest they should be in a fact table They are mostly static or very rarely change - which suggests they should be in a dimension table. Maybe the heuristic I am using above is too crude? I will give some examples on the type of analysis I would like to carryout on the data warehouse - hopefully that will clarify things further. I would like to aggregate and analyze the data by sex and demographic classification - e.g. answer questions like: How does male and female weights compare across different demographic classifications? Which demographic classification (male AND female), show the most increase in weight this quarter. etc. Can anyone clarify whether sex and demographic classification are part of the fact table, or whether they are (as I suspect) dimension tables.? Also assuming they are dimension tables, could someone elaborate on the table structures (i.e. the fields)? The 'obvious' schema: CREATE TABLE sex_type (is_male int); CREATE TABLE demographic_category (id int, name varchar(4)); may not be the correct one.
