• x86 .net application with system.OutOfMemoryException

  Hi,Guys I got OutOfMemoryException after the app running for 1 day, the app totally use 1.5G memory , all consumed by managed heap, gen 2 used 200mb , and LOB used 1.3mb, however the weired thing is, 900mb of space are Free. from perf counter I saw there had number of gen 2 gc collection happened, why GC collector cannot collect those 900mb free space in gen2 and LOB?   I'm trying to make a simple program that continually displays and updates a label that displays the CPU usage, while having other unrelated things going on. I've done enough research to know that threading is likely going to be involved. However, I'm having trouble applying what I've seen in simple examples of threading to what I'm trying to do. • Iterating Oracle collections of objects with out exploding them

  I'm using Oracle object data types to represent a timespan or period. And I've got to do a bunch of operations that involve working with collections of periods. Iterating over collections in SQL is significantly faster than in PL/SQL. CREATE TYPE PERIOD AS OBJECT ( beginning DATE, ending DATE, ... some member functions...); CREATE TYPE PERIOD_TABLE AS TABLE OF PERIOD; -- sample usage SELECT <<period object>>.contains(period2) FROM TABLE(period_table1) t The problem is that the TABLE() function explodes the objects into scalar values, and I really need the objects instead. I could use the scalar values to recreate the objects but this would incur the overhead of re-instantiating the objects. And the period is designed to be subclassed so there would be additional difficulty trying to figure out what to initialize it as. Is there another way to do this that doesn't destroy my objects?

  I want to build an application client(client.exe) - server to do the following: when the clients run it they are thrown in a VPN and they can communicate each other within 1 applicataion. For example : clients run client.exe and they can see each other in LAN ONLY in Starcraft. From what i have read the right type of vpn for this situation is Secured Socket Tunneling Protocol: "Secure socket tunneling protocol, also referred to as SSTP, is by definition an application-layer protocol. It is designed to employ a synchronous communication in a back and forth motion between two programs. It allows many application endpoints over one network connection, between peer nodes, thereby enabling efficient usage of the communication resources that are available to that network. " Question: I don't have experience with networking programming so my question for the ones who have, is this the right approach? PS1: i don't want something done like OpenVpn, i do this as learning exercise. Both login options are available in my company clients but my application need to open only in the smart-card login. All the clients are windows 7 OS. • Minimalistic PHP template engine with caching but not Smarty?

  There are loads of questions for "the right" PHP template engine, but none of them is focused on caching. Does anybody know a lightweight, high-quality, PHP 5 based template engine that does the following out of the box: Low-level templating functions (Replacements, loops, and filtering, maybe conditionals) Caching of the parsed results with the possibility to set an individual TTL per item, and of course to force a reload programmatically Extremely easy usage (like Smarty's) Modest in polluting the namespace (the ideal solution would be one class to interact with from the outside application) But not Smarty. I have nothing against, and often use, Smarty, but I am looking for something a bit simpler and leaner. I took a look at Fabien Potencier's Twig that looks very nice and compiles templates into PHP code, but it doesn't do any actual caching beyond that. I need and want a template engine, as I need to completely separate code and presentation in a way that a HTML designer can understand later on, so please no fundamental discussions about whether template engines in PHP make sense. Those discussions are important, but they already exist on SO.

• SQL Query: How to determine "Seen during N hour" if given two DateTime time stamps?

  Hello all. I'm writing a statistics application based off a SQLite database. There is a table which records when users Login and Logout (SessionStart, SessionEnd DateTimes). What i'm looking for is a query that can show what hours user have been logged in, in sort of a line graph way- so between the hours of 12:00 and 1:00AM there were 60 users logged in (at any point), between the hours of 1:00 and 2:00AM there were 54 users logged in, etc... And I want to be able to run a SUM of this, which is why I can't bring the records into .NET and iterate through them that way. I've come up with a rather primative approach, a subquery for each hour of the day, however this approach has proved to be slow and slow. I need to be able to calculate this for a couple hundred thousand records in a split second.. • Why is memory management so visible in Java VM?

  I'm playing around with writing some simple Spring-based web apps and deploying them to Tomcat. Almost immediately, I run into the need to customize the Tomcat's JVM settings with -XX:MaxPermSize (and -Xmx and -Xms); without this, the server easily runs out of PermGen space. Why is this such an issue for Java VMs compared to other garbage collected languages? Comparing counts of "tune X memory usage" for X in Java, Ruby, Perl and Python, shows that Java has easily an order of magnitude more hits in Google than the other languages combined. I'd also be interested in references to technical papers/blog-posts/etc explaining design choices behind JVM GC implementations, across different JVMs or compared to other interpreted language VMs (e.g. comparing Sun or IBM JVM to Parrot). Are there technical reasons why JVM users still have to deal with non-auto-tuning heap/permgen sizes?

• Implementing Model-level caching

  I was posting some comments in a related question about MVC caching and some questions about actual implementation came up. How does one implement a Model-level cache that works transparently without the developer needing to manually cache, yet still remains efficient? I would keep my caching responsibilities firmly within the model. It is none of the controller's or view's business where the model is getting data. All they care about is that when data is requested, data is provided - this is how the MVC paradigm is supposed to work. (Source: Post by Jarrod) The reason I am skeptical is because caching should usually not be done unless there is a real need, and shouldn't be done for things like search results. So somehow the Model itself has to know whether or not the SELECT statement being issued to it worthy of being cached. Wouldn't the Model have to be astronomically smart, and/or store statistics of what is being most often queried over a long period of time in order to accurately make a decision? And wouldn't the overhead of all this make the caching useless anyway? Also, how would you uniquely identify a query from another query (or more accurately, a resultset from another resultset)? What about if you're using prepared statements, with only the parameters changing according to user input? Another poster said this: I would suggest using the md5 hash of your query combined with a serialized version of your input arguments. This would require twice the number of serialization options. I was under the impression that serialization was quite expensive, and for large inputs this might be even worse than just re-querying. And is the minuscule chance of collision worth worrying about? Conceptually, caching in the Model seems like a good idea to me, but it seems in practicality the developer should have direct control over caching and write it into the controller. Thoughts/ideas? Edit: I'm using PHP and MySQL if that helps to narrow your focus.

• Effects of the `extern` keyword on C functions

  In C I did not notice any effect of the extern keyword used before function declaration. At first I thougth that when defining extern int f(); in a single file forces you to implement it outside of the files scope, however I found out that both extern int f(); int f() {return 0;} And extern int f() {return 0;} Compiles just fine, with no warnings from gcc. I used gcc -Wall -ansi, he wouldn't even accept // comments. Are there any effects for using extern before function definitions? Or is it just an optional keyword with no side effects for functions. In the latter case I don't understand why did the standard designers chose to litter the grammar with superfluous keywords. EDIT: to clarify, I know there's usage for extern in variables, but I'm only asking about extern in functions.

  Hi, In my application, there is a inheritance hierarchy in which only the classes that are at the end of the inheritance chain are non-abstract classes. Also there is some usage of boost::variant. I want to write a function which takes a pointer and a Type and says whether the object belongs to that type.   Hi, My application architecture looks like this. GWT in the UI layer - Calls GWT RPC service (servlets) - Looksup Spring Beans - Calls the DAO layer which is implemented in JPA (EclipseLink). I have successfully tested the application with GWT rpc services directly calling the JPA layer. But I am having trouble integrating spring into the mix. (Primary usage of Spring is transaction management). I tried googling, but could not find any good article on the topic. • SoundPlayer causing Memory Leaks?

  I'm writing a basic writing app in C# and I wanted to have the program make typewriter sounds as you typed. I've hooked the KeyPress event on my RichTextBox to a function that uses a SoundPlayer to play a short wav file every time a key is pressed, however I've noticed after a while my computer slows to a crawl and checking my processes, audiodlg.exe was using 5 GIGABYTES of RAM. The code I'm using is as follows: I initialise the SoundPlayer as a global variable on program start with SoundPlayer sp = new SoundPlayer("typewriter.wav") Then on the KeyPress event I simply call sp.Play(); Does anybody know what's causing the heavy memory usage? The file is less than a second long, so it shouldn't be clogging the thing up too much.

  I'm using Symfony 1.4 and Doctrine. So far I had no problem running tasks with Symfony. But now that I have to import a pretty big amount of data and save them in the database, I get the infamous "Fatal Error: Allowed memory size of XXXX bytes exhausted" During this import I'm only creating new objects, setting a few fields and saving them. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the number of objects I'm creating when saving data. Unsetting those objects doesn't do anything though. Are there any best practices to limit memory usage in Symfony?

• Databinding Error when Recreating object

  Hi All, Figure there is a simple solution to this problem but I have been unable to find it. I have databinding in an ASP.Net application to a GridView. This gridview is bound to an ObjectDataSource as per standard usage. The problem I have is that one of my bound fields uses the property DataFormatString="{0:C}" and due to the currency format being displayed when an update is attempted and the object recreated I get a error as such "$13.00 is not a valid value for Decimal." Clearly this is a result of the column using a FormatString and then attempting to bind it back to a decimal property I have in my object called UnitPrice. I am assuming there is some markup I can set that can specify how the value is translated back? Thanks in advance for any help.

  REPHRASED QUESTION: I am coming up with a list of possible image bit depth values that could be used as a predefined reference list in my application. I could think of 8,16,24 and 32 bit depths. The image formats considered are BMP, JPEG, PNG and GIF. I understand the bit depth decides the quality and thereby the storage requirements for the image. The application is used to store user uploaded images(non-medical, non-DICOM). Are there more bit depths other than the ones mentioned above that i should be including in my list? Are there any stats on the usage of the images with bit depths? Appreciate your response!

• What's the official Microsoft way to track counts of dynamic controls to be reconstructed upon Postback?

  When creating dynamic controls based on a data source of arbitrary and changing size, what is the official way to track exactly how many controls need to be rebuilt into the page's control collection after a Postback operation (i.e. on the server side during the ASP.NET page event lifecycle) specifically the point at which dynamic controls are supposed to be rebuilt? Where is the arity stored for retrieval and reconstruction usage? By "official" I mean the Microsoft way of doing it. There exist hacks like Session storage, etc but I want to know the bonafide or at least Microsoft-recommended way. I've been unable to find a documentation page stating this information. Usually code samples work with a set of dynamic controls of known numbers. It's as if doing otherwise would be tougher. Update: I'm not inquiring about user controls or static expression of declarative controls, but instead about dynamically injecting controls completely from code-behind, whether they be mine, 3rd-party or built-in ASP.NET controls.

• Calculating confidence intervals for a non-normal distribution

  Hi all, First, I should specify that my knowledge of statistics is fairly limited, so please forgive me if my question seems trivial or perhaps doesn't even make sense. I have data that doesn't appear to be normally distributed. Typically, when I plot confidence intervals, I would use the mean +- 2 standard deviations, but I don't think that is acceptible for a non-uniform distribution. My sample size is currently set to 1000 samples, which would seem like enough to determine if it was a normal distribution or not. I use Matlab for all my processing, so are there any functions in Matlab that would make it easy to calculate the confidence intervals (say 95%)? I know there are the 'quantile' and 'prctile' functions, but I'm not sure if that's what I need to use. The function 'mle' also returns confidence intervals for normally distributed data, although you can also supply your own pdf. Could I use ksdensity to create a pdf for my data, then feed that pdf into the mle function to give me confidence intervals? Also, how would I go about determining if my data is normally distributed. I mean I can currently tell just by looking at the histogram or pdf from ksdensity, but is there a way to quantitatively measure it? Thanks!

• MKL Accelerated Math Libraries for Java...

  I've looked at the related threads on StackOverflow and Googled with not much luck. I'm also very new to Java (I'm coming from a C# and .NET background) so please bear with me. There is so much available in the Java world it's pretty overwhelming. I'm starting on a new Java-on-Linux project that requires some heavy and highly repetitious numerical calculations (i.e. statistics, FFT, Linear Algebra, Matrices, etc.). So maximizing the performance of the mathematical operations is a requirement, as is ensuring the math is correct. So hence I have an interest in finding a Java library that perhaps leverages native acceleration such as MKL, and is proven (so commercial options are definitely a possibility here). In the .NET space there are highly optimized and MKL accelerated commercial Mathematical libraries such as Centerspace NMath and Extreme Optimization. Is there anything comparable in Java? Most of the math libraries I have found for Java either do not seem to be actively maintained (such as Colt) or do not appear to leverage MKL or other native acceleration (such as Apache Commons Math). I have considered trying to leverage MKL directly from Java myself (e.g. JNI), but me being new to Java (let alone interoperating between Java and native libraries) it seemed smarter finding a Java library that has already done this correctly, efficiently, and is proven. Again I apologize if I am mistaken or misguided (even in regarding any libraries I've mentioned) and my ignorance of the Java offerings. It's a whole new world for me coming from the heavily commercialized Microsoft stock so I could easily be mistaken on where to look and regarding the Java libraries I've mentioned. I would greatly appreciate any help or advice.

  I need to change the log format of my rails app. I put this file in lib directory and required it in development.rb env file. require 'hodel_3000_compliant_logger' config.logger = Hodel3000CompliantLogger.new(config.log_path) and I should get the output of the development.log file as follows: Jun 28 03:05:13 millisami-notebook rails[18243]: Memory usage: 86888 | PID: 18243 I get this exact log when I start my app with script/server (Mongrel). But when I run the app via Passenger, the format being logged is Rails' default. Why doesn't Passenger write to the log file like Mongrel does?
