• TechEd 2010 Day Two – No SQL Server in Sight

  Today I worked the booth at TechEd 2010, manning the new “Surface” computer, which is just the coolest object on the planet. After that I didn’t attend a single SQL Server session – instead I’ve been frequenting SharePoint, Microsoft Office, and even the High-Performance Computing sessions. The reason is that I get really high quality SQL Server presentations at PASS, SQL Saturdays, and online from Microsoft and other vendors. While there are SQL Server sessions here (after all, I’m giving one of them!) I tend to try and see things that I don’t normally get to learn about. And the cross-pollination between those technologies and mine is fantastic.     I’ve even managed to go to an Entity Framework presentation for the developers. I actually have (a little) more respect for that technology – and I’ve modified my presentation to encompass more of that information. So whenever you have the chance, take a walk outside your comfort zone. • Google Loon–A network of balloons to provide internet to everyone

  Google once just a super powerful search engine provider and now they are venturing in to a lot of interesting non software projects like self driving cars, glasses that beam information right on to your eye balls, high speed internet services @ 1 Giga bytes per second. A recent addition to this innovative list is Google Loon – a network of flying balloons that provide internet access to remote parts of the world where it is not feasible for many governments/corporate to provider internet services. Google says there are several billions of people around the world who don’t have access to internet and Google Loon aim is to provide internet facilities to all these people. A pilot project is started couple of days ago by launching 30 balloons into stratosphere from New Zealand. These balloons fly 20 Kilometers above earth(much higher than where aero planes fly) and they beam internet to homes having Loon receiver wirelessly. Checkout the embedded introductory video on Google Loon What is in it for Google? Why is Google getting into these type of projects and what is in it for them? Google is the gateway to web and majority of people find information on web using Google Services/Software. So providing internet facilities to more people means, more people using Google services and it in turn contributes to their revenue growth. Google is not a charity, they do all these projects to earn money just like every other corporate. The best part is while earning money they are touching lives of billions of people in a positive way. Just imagine everyone in the world connected and have ability to take informed decisions irrespective of whether they live in developed countries or underprivileged parts of the world! • Using an Apt Repository for Paid Software Updates

  I'm trying to determine a way to distribute software updates for a hosted/on-site web application that may have weekly and/or monthly updates. I don't want the customers who use the on-site product to have to worry about updating it manually I just want it to download and install automatically ala Google Chrome. I'm planning on providing an OVF file with Ubuntu and the software installed and configured. My first thought on how to distributed software is to create six Apt repositories/channels (not sure which would be better at this point) that will be accessed through SSH using keys so if a customer doesn't renew their subscription we can disable their account: Beta - Used internally on test data to check the package for major defects. Internal - Used internally on live data to check the package for defects (dog fooding stage). External 1 - Deployed to 1% of our user base (randomly selected) to check for defects. External 9 - Deployed to 9% of our user base (randomly selected) to check for defects. External 90 - Deployed to the remaining 90% of users. Hosted - Deployed to the hosted environment. It will take a sign off at each stage to move into the next repository in case problems are reported. My questions to the community are: Has anyone tried something like this before? Can anyone see a downside to this type of a procedure? Is there a better way?

• how can I fix error: hd0 out of disk?

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a netbook - Acer AS 1410. After a download session, I restarted the computer and it said: error: hd0 out of disk. Press any key to continue... I pressed everything, but it's just frozen there. Any idea what's wrong with it and what I can do to fix it? I haven't been able to run my computer at all since it's frozen like that. Help please! • 12.04 grub unable to boot on /sde, upgrade-grub and boot-repair failed, please help

  My problem is I've 4 disks in a raid array listed as sda, sdb... sdd and grub 2 refuses to boot on /sde (the 5th disk, standalone and containing a clean install of 12.04 64 bits). I tried all solutions but all fail. (live CD/USB with grub-setup, also tried repair-grub, and tried also in the "grub rescue" set prefix= etc). I also tried to deactivate the RAID array in the BIOS, but I'd rather not destroy it, and I didn't find a way to make the standalone disk as '/sda1' (this would satisfy grub). In the BIOS, the would-be /sda is the only bootable hard disk; it ends up as /sde and grubs complains. I've made repair-grub issue a pastebin. I always end up in grub-rescue and I'm stuck. I need Ubuntu to boot so that I can add the device array handler for my disks. I can't switch the disks and I can't disconnect the SATA RAID controller. I need: (a) a workaround so that grub starts on /sde; or (b) a way to change the order in which Ubuntu sees the disks, at boot time. I could then provide grub with a /sda1. • Observable Adapter

  .NET 4.0 introduced a pair of interfaces, IObservable<T> and IObserver<T>, supporting subscriptions to and notifications for push-based sequences. In combination with Reactive Extensions (Rx), these interfaces provide a convenient and uniform way of describing event sources and sinks in .NET. The StreamInsight CTP refresh in November 2009 included an Observable adapter supporting “reactive” event inputs and outputs.   While we continue to believe it enables an important programming model, the Observable adapter was not included in the final (RTM) release of Microsoft StreamInsight 1.0. The release takes a dependency on .NET 3.5 but for timing reasons could not take a dependency on .NET 4.0. Shipping a separate copy of the observable interfaces in StreamInsight – as we did in the CTP refresh – was not a viable option in the RTM release.   Within the next months, we will be shipping another preview of the Observable adapter that targets .NET 4.0. • boot up fails. drops to initramfs prompt 12.04

  I am running an HP pavilion dv6000 dual boot win7 and Ubuntu 12.04. (well, up until today). after a reboot, the boot process drops to the busy box shell and i end up at the prompt: BusyBox v1.18.5 (Ubuntu 1:1.18.5-1ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) Ive been researching others who have had this same problem, but haven't been able to find any of those solutions to work for me. I tried the method described here: http://www.proposedsolution.com/solutions/ubuntu-booting-to-initramfs-prompt/ and after the final command mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /root -o force it does nothing and gives me another (initramfs) prompt. I can boot to a live CD (USB) and get to a terminal, but it doesn't seem to do much good, as I can see the /dev/sda1 in the ls command, but it doesn't recognize it when I try to cd to it. My command line skills are very green, and am just starting to grasp them. One more question: using the command fdisk -l how can I tell which mount point (sda1/sda2) is my windows partition and which one is Ubuntu? Any help? I'm in a bit over my head right now...

Jake Sabulsky started off by explaining that you should be concentrating on the core functionality of your app and letting the framework take care of the features that users require these days.  This is implemented be leveraging contracts.  When Windows 8 was released it included the File, Share and Pickers contracts.  With the release of Windows 8.1 they have added the Contacts and Calendar contracts. There have been a number of improvements to the original contracts. The File URI contract will now automatically detect the size that a new windows should be opened and will also allow you to programmatically influence new window size.  The Share contract has been enhanced by allowing apps to always share screenshots and links to the app in the store. • Best Java Book(s) for an Experienced Developer

  I have been a .NET developer now for about the past 5/6 years give or take. I have never done any professional Java development and the last time I really touched it was probably back in college. I have been toying with the Scala language a little bit but nothing serious. Recently, I've been offered an opportunity to do some pretty cool work, but using Java instead of .NET. I think I can get by alright with my current skill set, meaning I already know how to program well and am familiar with languages such as C# and C++, etc. So, the syntax and all that language stuff are really not a problem. What I need is a really good reference book and a book about how to think in Java. Each language/Framework/Stack tries to address things a certain way and I'm sure Java is no different. What are some great Java books that you simply can't live without? Are there any books that talk about the most important parts of Java that must be understood before all else? As a side note, I will be doing mostly Java web development. Not really 100% on what types of stuff they are using for persistence, framework, server, etc. Thanks again for the consideration.

• What web technology could I use which would support a decision tree?

  I am a big game development fan but I haven't done any commercial work in the past. I have been asked by a non-profit to look at developing a game similar to the award-winning www.playspent.org They want the following features: support 5 scenarios mobile isn't important but compatibility with older browsers would be a big bonus they want it to be visual and audible bonus is to have it easily modifiable support 4 languages I don't have much knowledge of Flash and would rather avoid using it as a solution. I started breaking down the problem into segments that I will need to examine, they are as follows: ability to read the game flow from a file that they can produce (xml, etc.) db design to store decision tree language challenge browser compatibility I am leaning towards an Google app engine/GWT solution but I am not sure what technology is best for this. I am really hoping to get your opinion/recommendation on my approach and on what technology is best. A special thanks (and beer if you live in Toronto) will be awarded to anyone who can help give me a ballpark estimate on how much such a game should go for. I know it's tough to estimate but any rough figure will help (how much would you charge for building something like playspent.org?) Thanks in advance

• Keeping game model and graphics/animation separate but in sync

  Suppose I'm building a chess game where I want to have animations. Pieces glide to their new squares when moved. Pieces perform attack animations when capturing other pieces. I'm not sure how to effectively separate the data and logic needed for these animations and the actual game model (in the MVC sense). The pieces themselves should ideally not have to worry about their pixel coordinates or current animation frame. At the same time, many changes to the model are effectively driven by animations. A moved piece changes its position after (before?) its sprite is done gliding. A piece is removed from the board after the capturing piece is finished its attack animation. How would you suggest I manage the game model, the graphics and animations, and their relationships? For example, where would the animations "live"? How would animations be created and managed in response to player moves? How would animations drive updates to the game model, or how would the game model drive animations?

• Rendering Text with the HTML5 Canvas

  In a previous post I walked through the fundamentals of rendering shapes such as squares and circles using the HTML5 Canvas API. In this post I’ll provide a simple example of rendering and rotating text. To render text you can use the fillText() or strokeText() functions which take the text to render as well as the x and y coordinates of where to render it. To rotate text you can use the transform functions available with the HTML5 Canvas such as save(), rotate(), and restore(). To run the live demos that follow click the Result tab in the blue bar of each demo.   Rendering Text This example provides a simple look at how text can be rendered using the HTML5 Canvas. It iterates through a loop, updates the text and font size dynamically, measures the width of the text using the measureText() function, and then calls fillText() to render the text with the desired font size to the screen.   Here’s what the code above renders:   Rotating Text This example shows how text can be rendered and even rotated by using transform functions built into the HTML5 Canvas. The code starts by rendering text the standard way using fillText(). It then saves the state of the canvas performs an x,y coordinate transform (moves to 100, 300 respectively) and then rotates the canvas –90 degrees using the rotate() function. After the text is rendered, the canvas is reverted back to it’s existing state (saved by calling the save() function) by calling the restore() function. • Moodle 2 pages loading up to 2000% faster

  On average our Moodle 2 pages were loading in 2.8 seconds, now they load in as little as 0.12 seconds, so that’s like 2333.333% faster!What was it I hear you say?Well it was the database connection, or more correctly the database library. I was using FreeTDS http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Installing_MSSQL_for_PHP, but now I’m using the new Microsoft Drivers 3.0 for PHP for SQL Server http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20098. I’m in a Windows Server IT department, and in both our live and development environments, we have Moodle 2.2.3, IIS 7.5, and PHP 5.3.10 running on two Windows Server 2008 R2 servers and using MS Network Load Balancing.Since moving to Moodle 2, the pages have always loaded much more slowly than they did in Moodle 1.9, I’ve been chasing this issue for quite a while. I had previously tried the Microsoft Drivers for PHP for SQL Server 2.0, but my testing showed it was slower than the FreeTDS driver.Then yesterday I found Microsoft had released the new version, Microsoft Drivers 3.0 for PHP for SQL Server, so I thought I’d give it a run, and wow what a difference it made.Pages that were loading in 2.8 seconds, now they load in as little as 0.12 seconds, 2333.333% faster…I have more testing to do, but so far it’s looking good, I have scheduled multi user load testing for early next week (fingers crossed).To make the change all I need to do was,download the driverscopy the relevant files to PHP\ext (for us they were php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll and php_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll) install the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client x64 http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29065 add to PHP.ini, extension=php_pdo_sqlsrv_53_nts.dll, extension=php_sqlsrv_53_nts.dllremove form PHP.ini, extension=php_dblib.dllvchange in PHP.ini, mssql.textlimit = 20971520 and mssql.textsize = 20971520change Moodle config.php, $CFG->dbtype = 'sqlsrv'; and 'dbpersist' => Trueand then reboot and test…I've browsed courses, backed up/restored some really large and complicated courses, deleted courses etc. etc. all good.Still more testing to do but, hey this is good start...Hope this helps anyone experiencing the same slowness…

• OOW 2012: Kings of Leon & Pearl Jam - Appreciation Event

  June 15, 1992 - that was actually the day when Pearl Jam played their first concert in Serenadenhof in my hometown, Nürnberg. Oups ... that's over 20 years ago ... So I was so happy to get a ticket to this year's OOW 2012 appreciation event on Treasure Island. Every year it amazes me over and over again how the organizers manage it logistically to bring almost 40,000 people to and back from the island. Food was ... I would say fairly ok ... and beer (as always) is not - actually even though I'm not a beer drinker I wouldn't call it beer.  Kings of Leon did start. I like them a lot and owe their 2008 album Only By Night. That was a good start to warm up the crowd. And then Pearl Jam took over - and ... wooooooow ... they are such a great live band. First of all as far as I understood they were donating the money they've got for that gig to an NGO. And Eddie Vedder's voice is simply striking ... I had shivers running down my spine. They played a good excerpt of their +20 years career closing down with Alive at the very end. It seemed to everybody that the band had real fun playing there - and it was sooooo good. Thanks a lot to the person who did organize me a ticket Catching my bus back to my hotel area down at Fisherman's Wharf worked well - but I must have fallen asleep 5 minutes after we've left the parking lot. The next thing I did recognize was the bus driver pushing the breaks at Northpoint. What a wonderful night ...

  Once again, I find myself back in Seoul – ASEM Tower, 16th Floor in a mobile room. I’m busy preparing for the interview process that is about to take place for Oracle Korea’s GIP 7th (Graduate Intake Program): scheduling the first round interviews, organizing interview guidelines, educating interviewers on the process and framework and  getting all the logistics ready for the 1st round interview. Seoul or Korea rather is a fascinating place. Highly efficient, the utmost respect for seniors and results orientated. When students come in for an interview at first it was hard to tell them apart – there seems to be accepted interview attire that must be worn when attending an interview. Males and Females, all dress in black suits, with white shirts underneath – with males to wear simple and dark colored ties. During the interview, they would all sit very upright, all would bow when entering the room, place their hands on the laps and very often they would hold minimal eye contact. They would project their voice loud to portray confidence, they would talk in the Korean formal dialect at all times and will treat every question, every moment with extreme clarity and the utmost professionalism. When the interview concludes, they will all stand hands by their sides, bow 90 degrees and thank all the interviewers for their precious time and opportunity. As soon as they leave the interview room, I could hear all their sighs of relief and commended each other on their efforts. More and more I learn about the Korean culture it inspires me. Their patriotism, their respect for each, their values, their appreciation, their motivation, their desires and passion – it truly was an experience for me (even as a recruiter) and can’t help but feel truly impressed and motivated to live for every moment.
