  • Bash - read as a fallback to $@

    I have a working bash script (working on OSX) that takes files and directories as input and does something like for inputFile in $@ do [someStuff] done but I want to provide a “fallback”, meaning, if the script is started with no arguments (double-clicked, for example), it can take input at that time, by letting the user drop the files directly on the terminal (possibly through read but not mandatory, I'm open to better/different solutions). I'm guessing I should use some kind of if statement, but I'm not sure how. I'd like to not have to essentially duplicate the script's size by two by repeating [someStuff] for each case. Thank you.

  • laptop motherboard "shorts" when connected to adapter

    Disclaimer: I'm sort of a noob, and this is a long post. Thank you all in advance! summary: completely dead laptop with no signs of life whatsoever (suddenly, for no apparent reason) Here's the deal: Lenovo Y470 (only a few months old with no water or shock damage). It stopped working suddenly (no lights, no sound, even when connecting adapter with or without battery). I tried a different adapter (same electrical rating), but no luck. I disassembled the thing completely, and tried plugging in the adapter and looking for signs of life with all different combinations of components installed (tried all combinations of RAM, CPU, USB power cords, screen, etc plugged in). no luck. Then, I noticed (as I was plugging in the adapter to try for the millionth time) that there was a "spark" for an instant when I first connect the adapter to the power jack. The adapter's LED would then flash (indicating it isn't working or charging). So, I thought the power jack has a short of some sort (due to bad soldering or something). Scanned virtually every single component on the motherboard, and tested the power jack connections with a multimeter. No shorts or damage to anything on the entire motherboard. Now I'm thinking I need to replace the motherboard. But, my actual question: What does this "shorting" when connecting the adapter signify? (btw, the voltage across the power connections and current through it drop to virtually zero when the adapter is connected and "sparks", and they stay that way). The bewildering thing is that there are no damaged components, and the voltage across adapter terminals returns to normal after I disconnect it (so it's not damaged). Please take a look at the pictures (of the motherboard's power connection and nearby components) and see if I'm missing something completely obvious...   • Copy/Paste (Clipboard like) functionality from a VNC desktop

    I use TightVNC, RealVNC to access the Remote Linux(CentOS,Ubuntu) desktops by running a vncserver on the remote machine. When I connect to those servers from my Windows host: Can I use the Copy/Paste functionality on the VNC client desktop window. i.e. Copy some text on some terminal open inside the VNC client desktop window and paste it into some text file on my local windows machhines and vice-a-versa? I checked TightVNC options but did not see anything. Can it be done by a)Running vncserver on the remote machine with some options or b)By running some configuration on remote machine to enable this. How could I get it done? Also is this kind of Copy/Paste functionality possible in Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop connection/Terminal session protocol?

  • Configuring SMB shares in OS X

    I'm at my wit's end trying to control SMB file sharing on my Mac. (OS X 10.5 Leopard). I want to do something fairly simple: share a particular (non-home, non-Public) folder over my my SMB/Windows network with two users (accounts are local to my Mac), and share no other folders with anyone. The instructions on the internet are fairly straightforward: add the folders to be shared to the File Sharing panel of the Sharing System Preferences pane: ..and ensure that I'm sharing through SMB: However, when I actually try to connect via a SMB client (Windows XP in this case), the share does not appear. I see my home directory, "Macintosh HD", and my printers, but not the folder I just shared. I ensured that the underlying directory had the proper permissions (since this seems to affect share visibility) and that the "Shared Folder" checkbox was checked: ...but this didn't have any effect. I checked /etc/smb.conf but there was nothing obviously out of place there. I've also restarted smbd and rebooted. What else should I be looking for?

  • Toshiba Qosmio: Battery Stuck at 60%, does not Charges, PC can't power up, can't remain on with out

    Just like the tittle says, now let me try to give some more detail about the symptoms; The battery is stuck at 60 percent (68% at the moment of this writing).When hovering over the battery icon in Windows 7 Home Premium x64 it reads:"68% available (plugged in, charging)", there's no x or any sing the OS is displaying any error. No matter how much time left connected to the AC adapter the battery doesn't charge, it seems however it continues to discharge at its normal rate when disconnected from the laptop (about 1% each 2 weeks). Now this last symptom is the one i find most strange it "seems" the laptop somehow isn't recognizing the battery because even with the remaining charge of 60%(ish) the laptop wont power up or remain on if disconnected from its AC adapter(if it's on and is unplugged it will immediately turn off). Meaning that even with the battery attached correctly in its right place is as if running the laptop with no battery at all. Toshiba's Utilities haven't detected anything strange (or anything for that matter) with the battery or the hardware. The laptop when in use is connected 90% of the time to a Belkin surge protector (like my 1TB EHD). The protector is working correctly (green light on) and the 1TB HD too, thus a power surge having damaged it's very unlikely. Thnx in advance

  • Firefox requests the master password twice

    I've set a master password for Firefox. When Firefox starts, it strangely opens two separate password request windows. When I type in the master password and hit enter, Firefox opens without problems, but the other password request window stays there. I simply close it but it's annoying. Why are there 2 windows as it's enough to type the password once? I've upgraded Firefox from 3.5.5 to 3.5.6 but the problem remains. Any comments?   • Trying to find the life expectancy of an unused flash card like SD

    I read in the What's the life expectancy of an SD card? post SD cards are rated to hold data at something like 10 years sitting idle. I recall reading (not sure where) about re-energizing cards by occasionally inserting into a reader. Everything I read rates in read/write cycles and not physical decay. I'm wonder if buying a new sd card for every photo shoot would be beneficial if I could store the cards in a lock box? I was hoping for something much longer. Does anyone else agree with 10 years or maybe something more?

The total sum of all the RAM being used the the processes: 195604 K The amount in use as listed by performance page and the status bar: 280028 K 1) Why is this? 2) How do I reduce the amount of memory used?

    A similar question was asked but never really addressed the question, I think in part because of terminology confusion. So to be very clear: what's the difference between the two BitTorrent client, one named "BitTorrent" and the one named "µTorrent"? They look to have identical UIs, right down to the same checkboxes in the prefs dialogs. Why are there two programs with different names that appear to be identical? Is one superior to the other? (Are they different in any way?) Thanks.

  • debian modem problems !!!

    hay there guys ... I'm a new Debian user, it looks like a very good choice 4 me, every thing is stable, free and easy to use. the problem is, I'm using my modem to establish a dial up connection to the internet (ppp) (a very old stupid way I'm forced to use for now), and using the KPPP application to do that, and nothing is working properly for me. it seems like it didn't recognize my modem or something. i already tried to make a few stuff, and now i know my modem is on /dev/tty0, so i made a link for that on /dev/modem, and query the modem using KPPP and it responded with something like: Ati : Ati0: Ati1: ... ... Ati7: with a textBox to fill up in front of each one of thees Atis, and now, when i press connect on kppp, it says modem ready, and that's it. BTW, my modem is MDC AC'97 any suggestions pleas ....

    just got a new HP netbook with no optical drive and guide said I should be able to share the optical drive of another windows computer. The netbook is running Windows 7 and the laptop, also HP, with the internal optical drive is running Windows XP Media Center Edition. I have wireless network that both the laptop and netbook access without a problem. The instructions did not seem to work in my case. When I right clicked on Properties of the optical drive and went to the Sharing tab, there was no selction for Advanced Sharing as the instructions said. XP made me go to Network wizard and set up a network, (which I already had). After doing that I could not access the drive from Windows 7. Has anyone benn able to do this?

  • win xp client, win 7 host, only xp drivers

    I have a win 7 64 bit box which has xp on it in a vmware module and also the win7 version. I can use my old usb wifi card under virtual xp as i have the wifi drivers, but apparently the manufacturing company never made any further drivers, nor did it release the source code. Is it possible to get networking between the client and the host, so that my host can browse etc? I thought the microsoft loopback adapter might be the answer but ever example i can find of it's use describes a setup where the host is connected fine and needs to route data to the client as well.

    I recently got some malware on a machine that I don't use for much (partly intentional). I've cleaned it, but now everytime I open any .exe the 'Run As' dialog pops up asking me which user I want to use to run the program. What causes this, and what's the fix for it? edit My process to remove the malware was as such: Disconnected from the network Deleted DisableTaskMgr reg key Inspected with Process Explorer and Task Manager and noticed that all applications were being run within another executable located in Documents and Settings...\Temp\Some.exe The system tray application was also in Documents and Settings...\Temp\SomeOther.exe I suspected that a service was in place as the system tray application would restart if it was killed, but couldn't find any service that I didn't recognize. Removed permissions from Some.exe and SomeOther.exe (on those files only) Restarted and deleted Some.exe and SomeOther.exe Deleted startup entries that were created Ran AVG Free and Windows Defender to remove anything else (they would be killed immediately before the two .exe's were removed) Cleaned registry via CCleaner note that system restores would finish saying something to the effect of 'couldn't restore system: there were no changes made'. I attempted to restore to a week ago, and I only got the malware yesterday.

  • Mac OS X - rmdir fails with "Operation not permitted" for a folder created by a PC on a removable dr

    Hello. I have a problem (using Mac OS X 10.5.8) with the access rights of a folder that was presumably created by a virus on a disk-on-key drive when I used it with a PC. I can't remove the folder or change it's name. In Finder's Info window the Lock box is unchecked and uncheckable - if I try to check it it flips back to off.     I installed Ubuntu 10.4 using Wubi on a Windows 7 x64 on the first partion that is NTFS and it's using BitLocker and it does fail to load. Is it Wubi incompatible with BitLocker or there is a way to configure the system without removing BitLocker and to make it work? Currently when I try to load Ubuntu I get No wbildr error message.

  • How to disable modifying styles in word 2007?

    I'm just getting used to styles (always did the formatting "manually") so this may be overly simple question to some. I wish to modify styles once and for all, and then give that "design" to some of my coleagues, and they will use it to write ... whatever they need to write. But I wish to restrict them from modifying it. I.e. they should be able to make new documents using the given design, but shouldn't be able to modify the design. This make any sense? Any ideas?

  • How do I set up ZScreen to upload images to my mediawiki?

    I've set up a mediawiki with all the correct settings and enabled image uploading. When I do this manually this all works OK. I want to be able to upload screenshots automatically into my mediawiki using ZScreen. There is an option to do this: I press Test..., this work OK, however I'm unable to tell ZScreen to to actually get the picture into my mediawiki. There's no option to select mediawiki as my destination. How do I setup zscreen to upload to my mediawiki?
