  • How can I stream audio signals from various devices/computers to my home server?

    I currently have a headless home server set up (running Ubuntu 12.04 server edition) running a simple Apache HTTP server. The server is near an audio receiver, which controls a set of indoor and outdoor speakers in my home. Recently, my father purchased a Bluetooth adapter, which our various laptops and cellphones can connect to, outputting the music to the speakers. I was hoping to find a solution that worked over Wi-Fi, namely because it won't cost anything (I already have a server with an audio card), and it doesn't depend on Bluetooth. Is there any cross-platform (preferably free and open-source) solution that I can use which will allow me to stream audio to my home server, over my home network, from a wide variety of devices (laptops running Windows/Linux or cellphones running Android/BB/iOS)? I need something that works at least with Windows and Android. Also, just to clairfy, I want something that simply allows devices to connect to my server and output an audio signal without any action on the server end (since it's a server hidden away near my receiver). Any subsequent connection attempt should be dropped, so only one device can be in control of the stereo at once.

  • How to use Windows mini-dump files?

    I have a Mini-ITX Intel DH61AG mobo w/ an Intel i3 processor and 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM. Anyways, this computer has been crashing kind of frequently. It is not an OS problem, as I have used Ubuntu (and had kernel panics), Windows 7, and Windows 8 (BSODs aren't going to keep me from tinkering =p) Anyways, each of these OSes have had problems, so I ran a HDD check, and I know it is not a heat issue because I tested the processor for a few days when I first put the computer together. When I ran memtest86+, however, I got an error - so I did individual testing, and both chips came back good, did a really intense test with both of them again (took half a day), and no errors. So, I still think the problem could be RAM, but I am not sure - I tested it pretty extensively (might let it run all night again tonight)... which brings me to my point. Could someone explain to me (in simple terms if possible) how to READ the minidump files of Windows computers? I've tried before with a guide I found online, but failed miserably (can't remember guide, either =/). I'm fine with installing the software, I will probably need it sometime in the future as well. I have seen a few other posts on SU that just ask people to post minidump logs, but I feel as if that is too localized. Would someone be able to explain this?   • Can't connect to a share.

    Hello, I have a laptop with a Windows XP Tablet Edition installed. I have several users setup on the laptop (mostly me and my kids). When I try to connect to its administrative share via \DadLaptop\c$ from a Windows 2000 Professional machine, it prompts me for a user name and password. However, after I enter it, it always tells me "incorrect password or unknown username". As a test I setup another share, called "test" and tried to connect to that. It worked fine, didn't even ask me for a password, just connected to it and that's that. All the networking is wireless. I am connecting with an admin account (admin on the target computer). What am I missing? Why can't I connect to an administrative share?

  • Horizontal scrolling not working in Windows 7 running on MBP using Boot Camp

    Is there a way to enable horizontal scrolling on Windows installed on a bootcamp partition of MBP 13" Core 2 Duo, using a trackpad? I had a look into the Boot Camp Control panel settings, but could not find a setting that suggested this. I used the Boot Camp drivers that came with the MBP in the Mac OS X Install disk. The vertical scroll is working fine, and the horizontal scroll works fine in the Mac world of things, so the hardware is fine. I think maybe there might be an additional install for a driver that we may have to install? Or any update? Thanks in advance for all your help. :)

  • Ubuntu not connecting to network in Hyper-V

    I am unable to connect the Ubuntu guest (both 12.10 and 12.04) to the internet via hyper-V. Here is what I have done so far (with much thanks due to @Kronos's blog post on the topic): Created a switch in the switch manager with connection set to external, selected my wifi card (Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN). If it matters, the Microsoft Filtering Platform is checked under extensions. Added this switch to my Ubuntu guest. I also tried a different wireless card (Aethros 9285) same issue. Connecting through my wired card works just fine (assume that I select that card, and I am wired in of course). Making it a legacy network adapter does not fix the issue. Ubuntu can see this connection, but is unable to connect to it. What follows is what I attempted to do to get Ubuntu to connect: Start and restart the network manager Restart the machine Verify that it could in fact see the adapter (resulted in device not ready a few times) How can I get this to work properly?

  • Removable vs fixed mount points in Linux

    What makes a mount point removable in Linux? I am using Gentoo Linux with Gnome 3.2, and I find it annoying that some of my drives (ex: /dev/sdb) appear as removable but not the others (ex: /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd). They are all in /etc/fstab, with the same options. They are all mounted properly at startup, they all work fine under my own folders /mnt/drive2 /mnt/drive3 /mnt/drive4. But only one of them (the first) appears in Nautilus (and in the Gnome 3 notification tray) as mountable/removable, not the others. Can I add options to my fstab to hide it? Or can I probe using udevadm or whatever? It looks strange to be able to remove/unmount fixed drives that I never need to unmount nor remove. Any pointer would be good, thanks.

  • How can I stop Ubuntu from playing audio from 2 interfaces at the same time?

    Hi there, I just loaded Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick on my home machine. The machine is running a Core2Duo E6750 on an MSI motherboard with an Nvidia GTX260-OC Graphics card. The problem I am having as stated in the title is for some reason Ubuntu is playing audio through my headphone coming out from the computer and it is also playing the audio at the exact same time through the HDMI connection coming out of the graphics card, it has a plug to allow this. What is going on, I have never seen this before. Most importantly of all can it be fixed so that I can sepertate the 2 interfaces, the one is a standard PC audio IO and the HDMI one is connected through the mobo's internal SPDIF. More information can be provided if required.

  • How to fix skipping/stuttering audio in Google Chrome

    If I play Google Music, or a Youtube video in the Chrome browser, and then open a new tab and start typing the address bar, the audio will quickly cut in and out as I am typing (with almost every letter I type). It also is choppy if I play the video and start typing in the start menu. I can not repeat this behavior using internet explorer. Based on that Im thinking that it maybe a problem with the version of flash Chrome is using but I'm not sure. Any ideas? Im running 32 bit windows 7, i.e. 9, and chrome 23.0 pc is a lenovo t43p. I have the latest sound drivers. i.e. is using flash 11.5.502. chrome is using : Adobe Flash Player - Version: 11.5.31.2 Only one (this) plugin is listed for flash in the chrome plugins list.

    Can you recommend a current laptop model with easy heat sink access – or better yet, a removable air intake filter – making it easy to periodically clean out the dust and lint that always packs up in these things? Every laptop I've owned has eventually overheated on account of a clogged heat sink. (I suppose it doesn't help that I have a cat who loves to hang out where I'm working, or that my laptop is almost always running.) One of the things I really love about my current system, a Dell Inspiron 1420n, is how easy it is to service its cooling system: whenever I notice the fan starting to work harder and the CPU temperature climbing higher than it should be, I merely have to unscrew a single panel from the bottom of the machine, clean out the heat sink, and then I'm good for another few months. Which current models of the "business laptop" variety offer similar easy cooling system service? I'm looking for something roughly along the lines of: 14- or 15-inch display Nehalem-based CPU Solid construction – magnesium chassis or better (like the Inspiron) TPM (for BitLocker) ideal, but not mandatory Docking adapter ideal, but not mandatory Good battery life For example, the ThinkPad T410 would have been my top choice, but it seems like it would be a serious chore to service its heat sink. For the current MacBook Pros it looks downright impossible. No matter how nice the laptop is in other respects, it'll be of no use to me when it's overheating. So, any suggestions? Thanks in advance... (I'm constantly surprised that customers and manufacturers don't pay more attention to this feature, at least in the business laptop subcategory. In the last couple months I've fixed two friends' laptops which were also overheating due to clogged cooling systems; clearly I'm not the only one affected by this.)

    So I recently purchased a new router, and decided to put Tomato on it for some of the fancy features, like graphs. Only problem is, now I've installed it I can't connect to the internet any more! What I've done so far is plug the router in, connect to it wirelessly, and upgrade the firmware to the right version for my router. This went swimmingly, the router restarted, and everything's Tomatoey. Except it won't, now, connect to the internet, and I'm entirely unsure what I've missed. My old router was a BT Homehub, my ISP is BT (British Telecommunications). I'm a bit lost, this is the first time I've done any of this 3rd party firmware stuff.

  • Replacing latex with unicode symbols

    Often, during a conversation or an email, or at a forum, I would like to type some math, but I don't need full equation support. Unicode symbols should suffice. What I need is an easy way to type math related unicode symbols. Since I already know latex, it makes sense to use the latex symbol mnemonics to type the math symbols. What I currently did is to write an AutoHotKey script which automatically replaces \latexSymbol with the corresponding unicode symbol, using the "hotstrings" AutoHotKey feautres. However, the AutoHotKey hotstrings proved unstable for many strings. Having a couple of tens lines would cause AHK to fail recognizing the strings from time to time. Any other solution? (No, Alt+unicode number isn't convenient enough) Attached is my AHK script.   • Where is xorg.conf in Ubuntu 10.04?

The documentation I've been thus far say to do the following: sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup But I don't see the xorg.conf file anywhere... Am I missing something? Where is this located?

  • Reorganize Primary/Recovery Partitions and then install Ubuntu Netbook Remix?

    Hi all, I have a Samsung N120 netbook (with upgraded 2GB RAM). I recently got a new hard drive and motherboard for it because the original parts were faulty. However, when I got it back, whoever was working on it decided to make my primary partition ~40GB in size, compared to (what appears to be) the recovery partition, which is around 100GB in size. Firstly, I want to make the recovery partition much smaller (around ~10GB or smaller, if possible) and then make my primary partition fill the rest of the space. After that, I want to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. I don't know if this is installed within Windows like Ubuntu 9.10 but I want both XP and UNR on my machine at the same time. So basically... how do I resize my primary and recovery partitions such that the recovery is about 10GB or less and the primary fills the rest? Secondly, is UNR installed within Windows? (If not, would it create its own partition on my hard drive, along with the XP partition, and the recovery partition?) Thanks in advance.

  • Low framerate on background apps

    My problem is that when a game is running in the foreground, in Full Screen mode, any applications on my second monitor (such as youtube videos, videos, not app specific) drop their frame-rate to about 2-3 FPS. It seems like some sort of power management option that I can't track down. As far as I can tell, it's not due to the GPU not being able to keep up. For instance, my PC can play League of Legends at about 280FPS when the framerate is uncapped.   • Windows 7 - "A disk read error occured. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart"

    Problem: When I switch on my PC, after BIOS POST, a cursor is blinking for about 5 seconds and then I am getting this error message: A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart. I am able to go into BIOS. But Windows loader doesn't even start. This message is shown after my motherboard logo comes and goes. Symptoms: I DID notice my system freezing for minutes at a time for past two days. Also, in the past two days, it stopped half way through the Window booting process. I had to do hard reset couple of times to get it working. But since today morning, I only get this error message. Configuration: Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit only. Hard disk: 1 Physical Disk - 80GB SATA Partitions: Two (2) - C: and D: File System: NTFS No drive encryption or compression is turned on. After I searched on the net, I have found people mentioning these possible causes: Hard Disk is physically failing Corrupt MBR Bad Sector I am planning to buy a new hard disk, install Windows on it and continue. But I need data from the old hard disk. The data I want is in D: drive, outside any Windows user folder, is not encrypted or compressed or protected in anyway. I think if someone/something can get the disk working again and knows NTFS, the data can be hopefully read. What steps should I follow to recover files from the defective disk? Update: I bought a new disk, installed windows on it and added the defective one as a slave. Then I was able to read the data from the defective hard disk. Though chkdsk found lots of errors, the files I wanted were not affected and I got them back :) I am not using that hard disk anymore though it seems to be working at the moment.

  • Deleting a tag from lots of images at once in Aperture?

    Aperture makes it easy to tag lost of pictures at once by just selecting all the images, and the dragging and dropping tags from the tags pallet onto the selected images. But when you need to do the reverse, I can't find a way other than editing each image individually. Is there a way I could select multiple images at once and strip a tag out of all of them? I tried running ipconfig on my VM and then using the IP address that was given for "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection", something like this: http://192.168.179.139:1044/ but this throws a not found error. I am currently using NAT. How can I get to localhost on my VM from my mac?

  • How to get AMD Catalyst working on Arch x86_64

    I've got a Dell Inspiron 15R 7520 with AMD's hybrid "PowerXpress" graphics. The integrated graphics card is (if I understand it correctly) integrated with the i7-3612QM processor, and the discrete graphics card is a "Southern Islands" Radeon HD 7730M. The integrated graphics work perfectly under Arch. However, the discrete graphics don't. I have tried several different methods, and the one that seems to get me the farthest with the least effort is the AUR package catalyst-total-pxp. After installing, rebooting, and issuing the commands # aticonfig --initial # pxp_switch_catalyst amd # X X completely fails to start. The X log can be found here. I don't understand what is failing; potentially, it has something to do with the way my card is hooked up--I think it's muxless, but I really don't know. What is the matter here? Any help would be appreciated.

  • iChat or Gtalk won't connect to AIM. How can I fix this?

    I can sign onto AIM.com and I know my account is active because I can sign in on my iPhone or AIM express. I can't however log in using any 3rd part applications. I've tried logging in using Adium, iChat, and Gmail Chat (Gchat) I have tried to change my port to "443" and changed the server name to something different. This is so weird. Any suggestions??
