• Upgrade TFS 2010 build server to support .net 4.5

  What is needed in the tfs 2010 build agent, to build .net 4.5 projects, in tfs 2008 we had to set the MSBuildPath property, but the configuration seems to be different in 2010. I get the following error message. (614): The imported project "C:\Program Files (x86)\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v11.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" was not found. Confirm that the path in the declaration is correct, and that the file exists on disk. • Server unable to communicate OUT, fine serving traffic

  We have several servers that are randomly loses the ability to communicate out to other nodes on the local network and internet. However websites are being served fine and we still have ssh access. A reboot seems to fix the problem for a few days. The servers are running 10.5.X and are fully up to date with software updates. Does anyone have any opinions, we think it is probably an ISP router, but we are guessing. Cheers Jono

• SQL Server Management Studio unable to connect to local instance.

  I'm not a DBA, I'm a developer - and I'm having trouble with SQL Server Management studio. I installed SQL Server 2008 Standard on Windows 2008 Server R2, and according to Sql Server Configuration Manager, I've got two instances: OFFICESERVERS (for sharepoint) and MSSQLSERVER. When I open SQL Server Management Studio I can only discover OFFICESERVERS. I've checked the protocol configuration for both instances and didn't see anything that indicates to me why this would be. Any hints?

• Setting affinity on windows server 2003

  I have a program that by default only runs on one CPU. I have tried using the start /affinity x notepad.exe batch command but i can't get it to run my program. it changes the title of the command line window but doesn't execute the program. this start command does work for notepad so it might just be a problem with the software. I have set the affinity manually via task manager so i know it works. I am not the programmer of this software so changing that is not an option.

  My group inherited several 2008 R2 servers with single 70GB RAID 1 boot/system disks. No other disks in the servers. We need larger boot / system disk. Plan is : to replace one disk with new 500 GB drive wait for resync replace other smaller disk with 2nd 500 GB drive wait for resysnc Now I should have 500 GB RAID 1 with original 70 GB partition Then I would like to extend the 70 GB partition to 200 GB and add D: drive partition with remaining 300 GB Can the above be done using Windows Disk Management and / or Windows DiskPart ?

• Disk quota problem in Windows Server SBS 2003

  I have got a new job and the existing SBS 2003 domain setup is unsecure (i.e. everyone is a domain admin etc etc). There are lots of problem due to inexperienced "network admin", and I am trying to fix them one by one. There exist one issue which I found quite weird, that the "Quota" tab exists in the C:(NTFS) drive but not the D:(NTFS) drive. I played around with gpedit to enable disk quota (it was "not configured" before), but still I can't see that tab. Have you seen this problem before? How did you solve it?

• Option do not show schema names in SQL Server Management Studio

  I love the fact that tree and list controls in Windows allows incremental searches. Just select a starting point, and type, and the control will select the best matching node for you. This works in SSMS, but there's an annoying problem, especially so in the table node. SSMS prefixes all table names with the schema name and a dot. To make an incremental search here, I have to type 'dbo.', followed by whatever I'm searching for. Is there an option to turn off this table name representation in SSMS? I hope I'm asking this on the right stack exchange site. If you feel it's off base, let me know!

• Windows Server 2008 R2 DFS Root Namespace Required?

  I would prefer to set up our DFS such as: \domain.local\users \domain.local\customers \domain.local\support etc. Is this a problem? Do I need to instead set all of the above folders as targets under a root such as: \domain.local\files\users \domain.local\files\customers \domain.local\files\support Other than the path being shorter in the top example, which is what I would prefer, is there a difference in functionality in Windows DFS between the two examples shown?   Hi Gents, I'm looking to set up a wildcard cname on a FQDN but cant seem to get it to work. This is what i'm trying to achive: A Record : domain.co.uk : my.ip.address.1 A Record : en.domain.co.uk : my.ip.address.1 cname : www.*.en.domain.co.uk : --> uk.domain.co.uk I'm reasonably new to all this kind of thing, so it's pretty probably pretty straight forward. The number of sites forbids the use of multiple IP addresses. Thanks for any assistance.

  Ok. We know database size, number of concurrent users, number of transactions per minute; should choose number of processors, RAID, RAM, mirroring and clustering. There are no exact rule.. but may be there are no rules at all? In my practice in every case I have "legacy" system, and after some inspections and interview I can form an opinion how hardware and design can be improved. But every time when I meet "absolutely" new system (I guess there are no new systems, but sometimes are such tasks) I can't say anything trustful. So I'm interesting how people deal with such tasks? They map task on theirs experience or have some base formulas?

  Just wondering what backup processes you guys have. I am currently operating a weekly full database backup with daily differential backups. My understanding is that with such a set up, the difference between Full recovery mode and Simple recovery mode is that with Full recovery mode, I will be able to use the transaction logs to rollback my DB to a specific point in time having applied the latest differential backup. Assuming that in my scenario, the last differential backup serves as my last and ultimate 'save point', I don't see a need to rollback my DB even further back using the logs. This brings me to my question: Is there any additional benefits to be had using a Full recovery mode for my current backup process?

  Hi guys, Is there a quick way to give the local administrator full rights to all folders on the C drive? I am having really hard time with that, I try to give it full rights to some folders (user profiles) but I can't even modify the NTFS permissions in some cases, I get "permission denied" Is there some soft of tutorial or script that will just give the administrator full rights on all folders in the C driver?   Hi We have a Hyper-V cluster running 5 virtual terminal servers using HA. We need to be able make this system redundant and so if this site was to fail our users could log into the backup system at another location and access their data via the terminal servers. Any ideas? We were thinking of maybe using a NAS which replicated the data to the other location in real-time(pass-through disks)? and having a similar Hyper-V cluster setup in the backup location. However we would need to create the users in both location and create a virtual mirror without the data ie applications, directories, settings etc. Is this the best way to achieve this? We have read that using Hyper-v pass through disks is a big performance de-grade.

• SSL Certificate Stops Working after Server Reboot on IIS7, W2K8

  We recently upgraded from W2K3/IIS6 to W2K8/IIS7 and have been having problems with our SSL Certificate (Thawte 123 SSL certificate) ceasing to work after rebooting. Initially, the intermediate certificates would stop working and we could repair the problem by reinstalling all of them after the reboot (annoying, but not the end of the world). Unfortunately, this is no longer working. The certificate chain has been doublechecked by several tools and people with decent knowledge but no one has been able to identify the cause of the problem. The bindings in IIS have been checked as well The cert itself is also still valid. NOTE 1: I have seen THIS question which seems to be very similar, but there is no satisfactory answer in that post and it's a year old so not likely to get one any time soon. NOTE 2: I'm asking this on behalf of a co-worker so won't be able to provide instant feedback to any questions/suggestions but I will pass it on. • Windows Server 2008 R2 Finding Hidden files that are causing drive to fill up

  What is the best way to find out what files are sucking up so much space? My Windows directory lists its size as 15 GB but when I run a powershell script against it, it shows 40 GB. It seems 40 GB is about right because if I use that 40 GB and add it to the rest of my folders on C I get the 45 GB that is in use. I checked volume shadow copy and that is disabled and there are no volume shadow files listed. My page file is limited to 3 GB. How can I find out what files are taking 25 GB of space? Final Results: We ended up disabling UAC and then the Properties showed the true file size of the Windows folder, as shown in powershell script. This allowed us to drill down to the folder that had the issues... In our case it was in C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\VMware\VDM there were several large dump files, these were the mysterious unknown files in WinDirStat. It turns out our nessus scan is crashing a view service for a couple seconds so it creates a large dump file. So we will try this.. https://discussions.nessus.org/thread/5212

  I've done some searching and there doesn't appear to be a method of migrating old 2003 based profiles to the new "V2" profiles automatically. Specifically, we're interested in retaining the <Profile>.NK2 file in Outlook, the Favorites folder, and the Signatures folder. I'm in the process of writing a fairly complicated migration script that'll be executed at login, but seems like this is something that I shouldn't have to do. The User Migration Tool appears to only work for Vista, not 2008 R2. Any other ideas?

• AFP/SSH stopped working on OS X Server

  I have 3 Mac OS X servers all bound to AD, all configured in the Golden Triangle setup. All 3 are completely separate from each other in terms of services, but all reside on the same internal network and are all bound to the same Active Directory domain. Two are 10.5.x (latest updates) and one is 10.6.3. Last weekend, all 3 simultaneously stopped allowing Active Directory users access to certain services, specifically AFP & SSH. SMB still works fine on all 3. I asked the AD admin if anything changed, and he said "Yes, we made a change to user accounts to toughen up security", and suggested I use [email protected] instead of just username. This still didn't work. I have completely removed one of my servers from AD, and re-joined, but this didn't work either. I can do kinit from command line and get a Kerberos ticket. sudo klist -ke shows all services are configured to use the correct Kerberos principles. I have been scavenging the logs for any useful info. The AFP log just shows that I'm connecting and disconnecting. The DirectoryService.log shows stuff about misconfigured Kerberos hashes, but my research is showing that's not uncommon. /var/log/system.log isn't showing anything useful that I can see. I'm not sure where to go from here. Any help/ideas appreciated.

  from what i can gather the mailbox bit of the web interface works fine.. when any of the users go to options (top right) and try to use some of the features such as the Organise Mail Delivery Reports to find messages etc... it comes up with a message .. • Windows 7 ssh file server.

  Hello all- I have looked at the other posts, but have not quite found an answer I have a question about windows file sharing over SSH. I have copssh installed and it is working for Remote desktop connections. I have port 22 forwarded on my router etc. I connect from a Mac or Putty with this address: ssh -l copsshusername 3391:localhost:3389 [external ip] That works fine. I would like to configure Windows 7 to allow my ssh account that I use to login, access to certain shared folders. I have documents and videos and things that I would like to be able to download externally. I have done this before on Linux and a long time ago on XP, but I cannot figure out what I am missing on Windows 7. There is a designated SSH user that copssh uses to run the service and that I use to to login as. I have googled and googled and have not found a solution that does everything I need that is why I am turning here for ideas. I hope I am explaining this correctly. • 4TB HGST SATA drive only shows 1.62 TB in Windows Server 2012

  I'm using a Supermicro X9SRE-3F motherboard with the latest BIOS and 2x 4TB drives connected to the on-board SATA controller. If I set the BIOS to RAID and create a RAID 1 array, the array shows up in the BIOS as 3.6TB. However when I boot Windows (on a separate RAID 1 array), the 4TB drives show up individually in disk manager as 2x 1.62TB drives. I could use Windows 2012 to set up software RAID 1, but when I set the BIOS back to 2x individual drives, they still show up in Windows as 2x 1.62TB drives. How do I access the full capacity of these drives? Thanks, Brian Bulaw

  I'm fairly sure this is the right place for this question, but if not please move it to the the right site. I have a number of sites on a 1and1 package (yeah, I know...) and I also have a subdomian that belongs to a college tutor. I have been playing around with PHP and MySQL databases on the subdomian site and would like to know if it is possible to run a database driven (i.e. blog) on one of my 1and1 sites. I could upgrade my package but if I'm only going to gain database functionality I'm not sure if I want to do it. Also, as 1and1 don't use cPanel I'm wondering how the databases would be managed...but I'll worry about that when (if) the time comes. Cheers!

• Loads of memory in "standby" on Windows Server 2008 R2

  In our SharePoint farm, our Web Front End servers all have loads of memory in "standby" mode, meaning very little is available for our IIS worker process. We have 32 GB of RAM in each of the boxes, and standby memory will creep up to about 28 GB, whereas the IIS worker process only seems to be using about 2 GB. Also, we've seen the machine use the swap file extensively while this memory was in standby, so I am starting to think that this memory in standby mode is stopping IIS from using it, forcing it to swap to disk, causing more performance problems. I used SysInternals RamMap to indentify what is being kept in memory, and it was able to tell me that almost everything in standby memory is of type "Mapped File". When I sort the files listed under the file summary tab in RamMap by file size, the largest files (around a few hundred meg each) are IIS log files and SharePoint log files. I would like to understand which process is loading these files into standby memory and why they are not being released. When I do an iisreset, it does not release the memory. Any ideas? Thanks!
