  • Server drives: 2.5" SCSI less reliable than 3.5" ?

    Just had an HP 2.5" SAS 10k drive fail on a RAID5 array after about 2.5 years. It made me wonder if this was a fluke or an indication that 2.5" drives are less reliable than 3.5" SAS drives. I've had many 3.5" SAS drives running for many years without any issues (knock on wood). I would think that smaller drives would generate less heat and therefore be more reliable, but couldn't find any evidence of this. I realize all drives will eventually fail and that it's a crap shoot with any particular model, but was hoping someone could point out some related studies or comment on the SCSI drive sizes they've found to be most reliable in servers.     how can I access a GRAPHICAL login screen (like on earlier Windows versions, or like VNC) instead of the Username/Password prompt via RDP? I'm asking because we have several servers where we have no passwords but the shutdown/reboot option is given via group policy on the login screen. Thus, instead of having to go the hardware console I'd like to be able to perform reboot/shutdown actions via terminal services. Regards, Marki

  • Windows Server 2008 is stuck at "configuring updates - stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete"

    This has happened the last two times I've done updates to this system, and I really have no idea what is going on. It is installing a only a month's worth of updates. It only responds to ping and no services are up, so I can't view the system remotely (I have to hook up a monitor to see this message). In the past I've just restarted the system at this point and it eventually finishes updating. I want to know what I can do to avoid this situation, how to diagnose what is going on, and how to get any kind of remote access during the updates. Edit: I can start the machine in safe mode (where I did nothing but backup some files). I restarted and it no longer tries to do a windows update, just goes to the desktop where everything seems extremely broken. I can click on some things, but not launch most programs. I guess all I can do at this point is do a system restore or something.

  • Why does Kerberos need Ticket Granting Server?

    It's probably something fundamental but I can't find a certain statement. Why can't KDC authenticate then provide the service ticket directly. Is it about security or performance or some other thing? Since users don't log in each time they request a service and assumably they will keep logged in for a long time, AS doesn't seem so busy. Why do they have to be seperated?

  • Apache Issues on Windows Server 2008

    I'm looking to reinstall Apache 2.2.25 since I continue to get these errors in the Windows Application log every 2-5 minutes: Faulting application name: httpd.exe, version: 2.2.25.0, time stamp: 0x51dd049c Faulting module name: zlib1.dll, version: 1.2.3.0, time stamp: 0x4790446a Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00002bad Faulting process id: 0x38e8 Faulting application start time: 0x01cfbfd70cdfbc4f Faulting application path: C:\Apache2\bin\httpd.exe Faulting module path: C:\Apache2\bin\zlib1.dll Report Id: 745f20de-2bca-11e4-bd5d-002590f28d7e If the new install doesn't work or if there are some "issues", can I simply restore the Apache2 directory from backup and then I'll just be back where I started? I thought about just renaming the current install to something like c:\apache2_old and if something fails, I can delete the new install and rename c:\apace2_old back to c:\apache. What do you all think?

  • Remote access to server via service control panel for non-admin user in Windows 2008

    I'm trying to configure my Windows 2008 servers so that my developers can view their status without needing to log on to the box or be an admin. Unfortunately, the permissions set in Windows 2008 for remote non-admin users don't include the ability to enumerate or otherwise query services. This causes anything that contacts the SCM on the far end to fail (Win32_Service, sc.exe, services.msc etc). How do I set up permissions so that they can at least list the services and see if they are running?

  • How could I determine which SMB client/session has a specific file open on a Server 2008R2 Windows file server?

    What I need a way to associate a client name or IP address with an open file, so that I can cleanly close the file for maintenance. NET SESSION doesn't show the names of open files and NET FILE doesn't show the client which has the file open. I had hoped that I could cross-reference the data from these two commands, but that doesn't seem doable. Everything else I've see provides the same data as these commands, with no apparent way to determine which client machine has the file open.

  • Windows server 2008 - Access Based Enumeration (ABE) not working correctly

    I have a folder shared with permissions of only one user account, admin account and admin group having access to it, but when I open the shared area from a second user account which dose not have access to it, the folder is still visible to the second account despite ABE being enabled on it and all other parent directories/folders and even the the drive. The user can't access the shared folder (which is what I want), but I'd like the folder to also be invisible to that user, just to make it look cleaner and theirs no confusion between what they can access and what they cannot. How would I stop the folder appearing for users who don't have permissions to use it? Thanks in advanced. EDIT: I've just added the second user account to the permissions list but denied it access so that the account definitely has no permissions to access it in any way but that's still not hiding it.

I'm trying putting the logon script under the user's profile, putting the logon script under the Group Policy Object logon script section. Please help, none of the network shares are being mounted.

  • How to resolve 'No internet connectivity issues' with a Virtualised 2008 R2 Server using Forefront UAG

    I have spent some considerable time reading up on as many possible blogs and articles as I can to help me solve why my VM (Running on Hyper-V) for DirectAccess has suddenly stopped being able to access the internet. The VM setup shares the same internet connection on which I have written and submitted this question so I know that the actual underlying internet connection is fully functional. Previous to last week the DirectAccess was fully functional and had no issues. This is a recent problem which was led up to by a number of consistent crashes on the DA machine when access was attempted. Upon reboot all seemed well until recently. I am not certain whether it is relevant, but previously to this I had a number of power issues where the entire VM host shutdown unexpectedly leaving around 8 VM's in a bad way. Upon restart, the UAG DirectAccess machine was unable to access its configuration service (although the service was started) but this seemed to relate to the Light-Weight Active Directory Service AD LDS which had a corrupted database. Having repaired this database, I restarted the service and could subsequently reconnect to the configuration service again. For good measure I re-bound the network adapters (virtualised through Hyper-V) and DirectAccess claimed to be all happy again. However as it stands my machine is still unable to access the internet showing the "No internet connectivity" exclamation mark for the external facing NIC. I have also tried removing the adapters, disabling, re-enabling and the problem persists. The intranet part of the VM CorpNet seems to be fully functional as before and I'm running out of ideas. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I am not an advanced Domain Administrator so please be gentle.

  • Disk Cleanup on Server 2008 R2 is ineffective

    I have a user profile with ~2.9GB of Error Reports backed up in the ReportQueue folder (C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue). Running DiskCleanup as the administrator does not detect these files and therefore does not clean them up. However, running the utility as the user shows an even larger amount (12.4GB!) of error reporting files. As seen below: The problem is that after running the cleanup utility the disk spaced used does not decrease by anywhere near 12.4GB and running the utility again detects the same 12.4GB of files. What is the problem here? Alternatively, can I manually delete the files in the ReportQueue folder?

  • Big and reaaaally strange problem with a web server (host InMotion Hosting)

    Hi. I have a terrible problem that I have tried to solve since three days ago: I browse my own web site and after a while I cannot access the web site. AT ALL! I can only see a 501 error message: "Method Not Implemented. GET to / not supported. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request." Once I get that error the site is totally and permanently inaccessible in that browser!! Reboot, browser restarts, clear cache, clear all history and cookies, etc., are not working. I have reproduced it in 4 different computers. Three computers are in one city, the 4th is in another city. Two different ISP's also. One computer is Linux, the others are on Windows (XP and 2000). Browsers are FF 3 to FF3.5 and IE 8. The error is ALMOST reproducible on demand (for me at least). It appears when I browse the forum under certain circumstances. I don't know which are these circumstances, but if I browse it long enough (10 sec to 5 minutes) it eventually appears. Just to make it clear, once the error appears (while browsing the forum) then the whole web site become inaccessible, not only the forum! My host is not willing to help because they say they cannot reproduce the error. I sent screenoshots but they don't care. NEWS Reseting browser's settings from the 'Tools-Clear private data' din't worked. However! When I have cleared the same settings (more exaclty) cookies from the special menu that appears when you right click website's icon, it worked. So it was something related to a cookie BUT it manifests in all browsers (FF, IE, Opera). So it cannot be a browser related problem.

  • SQL Server 2008 database Backup

    Hi guys, today I was trying to restore a database with a backup I had made previously on another computer, however I kept getting the following error message: the media loaded on "filepath" is formatted to support 2 media families, but 1 media families are expected according to the device specification I didn't look into it at the time, I just figured it was a bad backup and I'd redo it when I got home. So now I'm trying to do another backup, and I'm getting the above error message for that too. I did backup to a different location at one point, however that no longer exists now. Is there a way i can get passed this error and just do a fresh backup of the database? any pointers would be much appreciated :)

  • Hardware for multipurpose home server

    Hi guys, I'm looking to set up a multipurpose home server and hoped you could help me with the hardware selection. First of all, the services it will provide: Hosting a MySQL database (for training and testing purposes) FTP server Personal Mail Server Home media server So with this in mind I've done some research, and found some viable solutions: A standard PC with the appropriate software (Either second hand or new) A non-solid state mini-ITX system A solid state, fanless mini-ITX system I've also noted the pros and cons of each system: A standard second hand PC with old hardware would be the cheapest option. It could also have lacking processing power, not enough RAM and generally faulty hardware. Also, huge power consumption heat generation and noise levels. A standard new PC would have top-notch hardware and will stay that way for quite some time, so it's a good investment. But again, the main problem is power consumption, heat generation and noise levels. A non-solid state mini-ITX system would have the advantages of lower power consumption, lower cost (as far as I can see) and long lasting hardware. But it will generate noise and heat which will be even worse because of the size. A solid state, fanless mini-ITX system would have all the advantages of a non-solid state mini-ITX but with minimal noise and heat. The main disadvantage is the read\write problems of flash memory. All in all I'm leaning towards a non-solid state mini-ITX because of the read\write issues of flash memory. So, after this overview of what I do know, my questions are: Are all these services even providable from a single server? To my best understanding they are, but then again, I might be wrong. Is any of these solutions viable? If yes, which one is the best for my purposes? If not, what would you suggest? Also, on a more software oriented note: OS wise, I'm planning to run Linux. I'm currently thinking of four options I've been recommended: CentOS, Gentoo, DSL (Damn Small Linux) and LFS (Linux From Scratch). Any thoughts on this? Any other distro you would recomend? Regarding FTP services, I've herd good things about FileZila. Anyone has any experience with that? Do you recommend it? Do you recommend something else? Regarding the Mail service, I know nothing about this except that it exists. Any software you recommend for this task? Home media, same as mail service. Any recommended software? I need to know how to set privileges of me (as a user). I am the only user, but I want access to everything, but I don't want to manage my VPS logged in as root. So I am creating a username.
