• How do I increase my home's bandwidth?

  I just mistakingly posted this on Stack Exchange but don't know how to delete it... Anyway, I was thinking of building a home server to use instead of renting a VPS, because in the long run it would be cheaper. What I'm concerned with is the bandwidth limit of my house. I know when I'm downloading something off the internet, if I download at high speeds the rest of the computers connected to my router will become slower. Is there any way to avoid this? There are other cable outlets in my house, will connecting a modem and router there avoid this problem?

  Hello everyone in serverfault. I am having a big problem at my job. I will let everyone know what I am using. I have two ibm x3690 servers with vmware esxi on both. Our product server has 8 vm on there. I have two lefthand san from HP. I have a watchgurd firewall. Our other site. I have one server over there ibm x3b90 sever. with one vm on there. I have a cisco 1700 router. and another watchgurd firewall. I have a vpn tunnel to my watchgurd firewall, to my cisco router. Site one works great. site two is having problems saving word documents and having problems printing in publisher 2007. Can someone please help?

• UDP packets to IP addresses other than specific ones not arriving and not shown in Wireshark

  I'm writing a service using UDP, but I can't manage to reply to the client. When sending to the client via the DHCP-assigned IP (192.168.1.143) Wireshark shows no sent packets. The server receives and Wireshark shows any packet sent by the client (broadcasted). If I send to a random, unassigned IP Wireshark doesn't show it. I thought the NIC would happily send it, since there is a router in the way - shouldn't Wireshark show it, even though it cannot possibly be received by a remote endpoint? If I send to either the router IP or another (specific, there is only one other) computer, the packet is shown in Wireshark. I am running Windows 7, the firewall is turned off using the control panel. Does the fact that wireshark doesn't show these packets mean that they aren't sent? What reason could there be for showing packets to one IP, but not another, on the same subnet?

• IPv6 static routes

  I am looking to configure a few hosts with IPv6 on my network. The router (running CentOS 5) is configured with an Hurricane Electric (HE) tunnel which works fine on that host. However, I would like to statically add a few additional hosts on the same LAN to have IPv6 through this tunnel. No, I don't want radvd or dhcpv6 to do the work for me in this case. I already have IPv6 forwarding enabled in sysctl.conf. I am looking for help with the next steps (statically adding the routes). Lets say the IP addresses are as follows: Router: 2001:470:1b07:1:: Host1: 2001:470:1b07:2:: How would I go about making them see each other? Thanks in advance for the help.

• C++ includes with and without .h

  I've never noticed it making any difference whether or not I include the .h at the end of an include, so I've always ignored the meaning, but I've just noticed in a particular program of mine, I get the error "memcpy was not declared in this scope" if I include "string", but not if I include "string.h". First of all, I was wondering the specific cause of this, but also generally the difference between the two. At the same time, if someone could explain the difference between includes in angular brackets and those in quotation marks, It'd be much appreciated.

• Good way to run commands on remote computer without its own public-facing IP address (Linux Centos)

  Have a few computers running Linux Centos 6.4. They are connected to an unmanaged switch, which in turn, is connected to a router (Verzion Fios issue). What is a good way to "log in" to one of the computers so that I can run commands? Do I need to use SSH, or something different? Since the computers do not have their own public-facing IP addresses, do I need to set up some kind of port forwarding within the router? What is a simple, reliable way to accomplish this? • I can't externally access my home server's wordpress website

  Basically, I can access everything just fine using 127.0.0.1, but if I use my external IP (123.123.123.123), I get page not found. My router is port forwarding HTTP port 80 to port 8080 on my servers internal IP address. In other words: (Application: HTTP | Start: 80 | End: 8080 | Protocol: Both | IP Address 192.168.0.101 | Enable [YES]) I know it's forwarding properly, because when I stop port forwarding, I can access my router page by using my external IP. • VPN Network intermittantly fails to provide internet: What could be possible causes

  We have a small office with our own VPN setup. We occasionally experience failures in our internet connection where we cannot access the internet. Most of the time the internet connection will resume by itself(without me doing anything) after a period of time(10 mins). Would you be able to suggest possible causes of the connection failure so I can then go and run some tests? Our network architecture is like so: A 'Billion' brand router that is connected to the internet via phone cable and then connected to our Cisco Switch A Cisco Switch/Bus which is connected to all our office nodes, our external harddrive and also to our router as stated above. All connections are via ethernet cable A series of work computers(nodes) connected via ethernet cable to the Cisco switch. Our ISP is TPG Australia We have a Virtual Private Network All the ethernet cables are about 3 years old Do you think that the causes of our intermittant connection problems could be due to the following: Data collisions in the ethernet cables Old/Faulty ethernet cables Our ISP has bad service Can you think of any other causes of the problem?

• Can't connect to Windows Server 2008 shared folders via VPN connection

  I set up an VPN connection on my 2008 server using RRAS. The VPN seems to work fine. I can connect from outside the network. I am also able to establish a remote access connection via the VPN-IP. However, I can't access my shared folders. After connecting to the VPN I can ping the server, but it is not shown in my networks. using \ip or \server-name doesn't work either, cannot be found. I checked ipconfig and this is what I found regarding the VPN: DNS-Suffix: Description: test Physical Adress: DHCP activated: No Auto-Config: Yes IPv4-Adress: 192.168.2.114 Sub: 255.255.255.255 Standard-gateway: DNS-Server: 192.168.0.1 NetBIOS: activated To clarify my IP-situation: server is connected to router with 192.168.0.x, the test-client is in an external network connected to a router with 192.168.1.x, server-client connection is using static ips with 192.168.2.x Can anyone help me with this one? The VPN should be ok since I am able to establish remote access.

• DNS servers via RA in IPv6

  Some time ago, RFC 6106 was created, which states how a router tells the clients about the DNS server to be used. It is a new standard, it has to be implemented, which needs time etc. I'm courious about the need for it: wouldn't have it been better to define a "globally valid" anycast address for DNS? Queries would be sent to this address and would be promoted along the default route until there is a host which claims to be responsible for it. In an enterprise network, that would be a central DNS server (or even more, on really big companies); in a SOHO network, it would either be the router or the DNS server of the ISP, in a root server hosting data center, it would be the DNS of the hoster, etc. What do I see wrong here? Do I have a wrong view of the anycast concept?

• Using VLANs that are routed together?

  I have a quick question that's bugging me the more I read about VLANs. So far I understand that they are useful for dividing the network into sub-sections, but if you route them together does that not remove any security benefit? As an example, if I created a VLAN on my home network which was simply one computer, one server and one router.if I wanted to divide the network between computers and servers I could put the computer on VLAN 10 and the server on VLAN 20. Then the computer would no longer be able to communicate with the server - unless I added a static route to the router that connected the two together, basically telling VLAN 10 that VLAN 20 exists and how to communicate with it. The VLANs would then be connected in a similar way to a 'flat' network that has no VLANs. Therefore, surely, all security benefits are lost. Am I missing something?

• 802.11N Windows XP Clients Unable to See Each Other

  I am attempting to update my wireless network from 802.11g to 802.11n. When connected to the 'G' access point, the client laptops (there are 7 running Windows XP) are able to connect and browse the network for each other. When I connect them to the 'N' access point they can see the access point, but not the rest of the network. I tried swapping out the access point with a wireless router, but this did not change anything. I verified in both the AP and the router that isolation was turned off. Searching the web has not turned up any other ideas. The manuals don't show anything either. Why can't my wireless client nodes see each other on the 'N' network?

• Upgrading my home network to Gigabit Ethernet and Wireless-N turns out slower than before

  My home network has three desktops, three laptops and some NAS drives. All desktops and NAS drives support Gigabit LAN and all laptops support Wireless-N. I was running a 100 BaseT switch though. I recently purchased a Gigabit Ethernet Switch and an Wireless-N ADSL Modem-Router. After upgrading, I noticed that the wireless file transfer speeds from laptop-to-NAS and vice versa became terribly slow. Possibly even slower than before the upgrade. The transfer speeds from desktop-to-NAS (wired) have improved though. As an example, copying a 50GB file from laptop-to-NAS was estimated at 15 hours! Is there something I can do to improve this? Also, should I consider buying a dedicated wireless access point for speed rather than using the Wireless modem-router?

  My friend has modem/router from Clear and I have sent him Buffalo router to put it between his Clear device and the Network. I walked him thru establishing VPN in DD-WRT but when I try to VPN I get a VPN Connection Error 807. I am out of ideas how to solve this. Any suggestion? I've found a few hacks for the DatePicker to work with times, but they all seem pretty inelegant and google isn't turning up anything nice.   I've created a GRE tunnel between LAN A and LAN B. LAN A is behind a router, and LAN B is behind a Linux box and this box has a pppoe interface. When i do tcpdump on Linux box i see that the traffic is routerd to Linux box (tunnel end), so my need is routing the tunnel traffic to internet. I've added these rules to my iptables script, and i stay unable to connect to internet from LAN A Permitting Linux to act as router (necessary to forward packets) echo "1" /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward iptables -A INPUT -p 47 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -i ppp0 -j ACCEPT iptables -A FORWARD -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o gre0 -j MASEQUARADE What i've forgot to set in this case?

• Mysterious problem...can remotely connect to a system but can't browse back out.

  I have LogMeIn installed on my home system. I went on travel and my wife called saying that none of our home systems could browse the internet. I thought I would try to connect to my home system using logmein. Surprisingly, I was able to connect to my home system and log in without any problems using logmein. When I opened a browser from my home system, I indeed could not browse. I opened a command prompt and tried to ping my router (192.168.1.1) and it failed/timed out. How is this possible? I can remotely connect to my system but once logged in cannot even ping my router. What's up with that?

• Missing eth0 configuration file

  I have two servers both running Scientific Linux 6 on the same network. Since I want SSH access to both of them, I want to give them both static IPs so I can setup port forwarding and not worry how my router assigns local IPs. I found that I need to edit the configuration file /etc/network-scripts/ifcng-eth0, however that file does not exist. The network card works fine, and I am able to ssh as long as I access the router and find the local ip. Can I simply make my own configuration file, or did I miss some step in configuring the system that I need to complete?

  For a LAN, instead of a switch, I have built a topology where each machine is connected to a router. Each host is assigned an IP address from 10/8. Here are the interface details: Lets say I ping 10.16.0.3 from this host. The routing table of 10.16.0.2 has been configured to use the router (10.16.0.1) as the default gateway. But since the destination IP address (10.16.0.3) is in the same subnet it sends out an ARP broadcast. I want to disable this behavior of sending an ARP broadcast and instead force it to use the routing table. How do I accomplish this?

• Remote Desktop connection repeatedly aborting

  I connect to my workplace computer using Remote Desktop. After 1-2 minutes the application freezes to tell me after one more minute that the connection was aborted. It then reconnects. Everything works again for 1-2 minutes. Then the process repeats. Probably Forever. My coworkers do not experience such problems when connecting to the workplace. My workplace computer: Windows 7 32bit My home computer: Windows 7 64bit connected to the internet via WLAN-router with integrated ADSL modem (Linksys WAG200G) Things I already tried to fix the problem: disabled the Windows firewall disabled the other firewall reduced the MTU upgraded the firmware on the router configured port-forwarding to forward all packets to my home computer The problem remains unchanged. • Something very strange with network

  Hello, I have Windows 7 and I have very strange thing with my network. Some time I was connected through wireless router and my IP was 192.168.2.103, router's IP was 192.168.2.1 and some other IP was 192.168.2.100. The last I get from page "active DHCP clients" of web interface of the router and from "wireless clients" I may to see that 192.168.2.100 not (!) belong to my MAC address. Router build by EDimax. So after that I disabled wireless function of the router and restarted it. In this time I had not ping to 192.168.2.1. Also I had not any other connection, not wireless nor cable, but (!) I still had ping to 192.168.2.100 and I not understand what this voodoo is... Suposing I have a Windows Form with 3 radio buttons to depict some "Mode" options as - Auto Manual Import How can I use boolean properties on Data/Domain Objects to DataBind to these buttons? I have tried many ways but to no avail. For example I would like to code like - rbtnAutoMode.DataBindings.Add("Text", myBusinessObject, "IsAutoMode"); rbtnManualMode.DataBindings.Add("Text", myBusinessObject, "IsManualMode"); rbtnImportMode.DataBindings.Add("Text", myBusinessObject, "IsImportMode"); There should be a fourth property like "SelectedMode" on the data/domain object which at the end should depict a single value like "SelectedMode = Auto". I am trying to update this property when any of the "IsAutoMode", "IsManualMode" or "IsImportMode" is changed, e.g. through the property setters. I have INotifyPropertyChanged implemented on my data/domain object so, updating any data/domain object property automatically updates my UI controls, that's not an issue. I am having very erratic behaviors for the Radio Buttons. I hope I was able to explain reasonably. I am actually in a hurry and could not put a detailed code on post, but any help in this regard is appreciated. There is a simple solution to this issue by exposing a method like - public void SetMode(Modes mode) { this._selectedMode = mode; } which could be called from the "CheckedChanged" event of the Radio Buttons from the UI and would perfectly set the "SelectedMode" on the business object, but I need to stretch the limits to verify whether this can be done by DataBinding.
