• Best development architecture for a small team of programmers

  Hi all.. I'm in the first month of work in a new company.. and after I met the two programmer's and asked how things are organized in terms of projects inside the company, they simply shrug their shoulders, and said that nothing is organized.. I think my jaw hit the ground that same time.. ( I know some, of you think I should quit, but I'm on a privileged position, I'm the most experienced there, so there's room for me to grow inside the company, and I'm taking the high road ).. So I talked to the IT guy, and one of the programmers, and maybe this week I'm going to get a server all to myself to start organizing things. I've used various architectures in my previous work experiences, on one I was developing in a server on the network ( no source control of course ).. another experience I had was developing in my local computer, with no server on the network, just source control. And at home, I have a mix of the two, everything I code is on a server on the network, and I have those folders under source control, and I also have a no-ip account configured on that server so I can access it everywhere and I can show the clients anything. For me I think this last solution ( the one I have at home ) is the best: Network server with LAMP stack. The server as a public IP so we can access it by domain name. And use subdomains for each project. Everybody works directly on the network server. I think the problem arises, when two or more people want to work on the same project, in this case the only way to do this is by using source control and local repositories, this is great, but I think this turns development a lot more complicated. In the example I gave, to make a change to the code, I would simply need to open the file in my favorite editor, make the change, alter the database, check in the changes into source control and presto all done. Using local repositories, I would have to get the latest version, run the scripts on the local database to update it, alter the file, alter the database, check in the changes to the network server, update the database on the network server, see if everything is running well on the network server, and presto all done, to me this seems overcomplicated for a change on a simple php page. I could share the database for the local development and for the network server, that sure would help. Maybe the best way to do this is just simply: Network server with LAMP stack ( test server so to speak ), public server accessible trough the web. LAMP stack on every developer computer ( minus the database ) We develop locally, test, then check in the changes into the server test and presto. What do you think? Maybe I should start doing this at home.. Thanks and best regards...

• Missing ODBCConfig for SQLite and LibreOffice Base

  I have used OpenOffice Base as a front end for SQlite databases, in 10.04 linked via ODBC. I am updating to 12.04, so I loaded LibreOffice Base, looks just like OObase. I have 12.04 on one drive and 10.04 on another. I loaded Sqliteman, sqlite3, unixodbc-bin, unixodbc, libsqliteodbc, sqlitebrowser. I copied my databases directory over. But in terminal ODBCConfig is not on the 12.04 system. So I copied odbc.ini from the home directory on 10.04 to 12.04 home directory, and now LibreOffice Base can access my database, and all is fine. Anyone know what is the problem with ODBCConfig, is it another victim of the change in QT? Of course I could edit odbc.ini with jedit, now I can see the format. In terminal I tried sudo find / -name ODBCConfig, but its not there.

• How to Disable Access to the Registry in Windows 7

  If you don’t know what your doing in the Registry, you can mess up your computer pretty good. Today we show you how to prevent users from accessing the Registry and making any changes to it. Using Local Group Policy Editor Note: This method uses Group Policy Editor which is not available in Home versions of Windows. First type gpedit.msc into the Search box in the Start menu. When Group Policy Editor opens, navigate to User Configuration \ Administrative Templates then select System. Under Setting in the right panel double-click on Prevent access to registry editing tools. Select the radio button next to Enabled, click OK, then close out of Group Policy Editor. Now if a user tries to access the Registry… They will get the following message advising they cannot access it.   Using Registry Enabler & Disabler 3 If you’re using Home or Starter version of Windows 7, you can use a neat utility called Registry Enabler & Disabler (link below). This app works on XP and Vista as well. There is no installation involved so you can run it from a flash drive, disable the registry, then take the flash drive with you while a the user is on the machine.   Again, if the user tries to access the Registry they will get the following error… Using one of these options will stop users from gaining access to the Registry or running any registry hacks. • "cannot open file userpref.blend@ for writing: Permission denied" in blender

  I'm using blender 2.69, installed via software centre, and when I save my user preference through File - User Preferences and click on "Save User Settings" there is a message "cannot open file /home/ganez/.config/blender/2.69/config/userpref.blend@ for writing permission denied" I have checked to the path /home/ganez/.config/blender/2.69/config/ and there is no userpref.blend file present. PS: I think this has something to do with file permission for that config folder and I have no idea on how to use the chmod command. So any advise? Thank you in advance.

• I can't find my backup for the cpanel in whm/cpanel

Thereafter, i tried to restore this file from the WHM, but i couldn't find it. Does anyone know what causes such problems? • Upgrading to Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c Release 2: Top Tips One Must Know

  Recently Oracle announced incremental release of Enterprise Manager 12c called Enterprise Manager 12c Release 2 (EM12c R2) which includes several new exciting features (Press announcement). Right before the official release, we upgraded an internal production site from EM 12c R1 to EM 12c R2 and had an extremely pleasant experience. Let me share few key takeaways as well as few tips from this upgrade exercise. I - Why Should You Upgrade To Enterprise Manager 12c Release 2 While an upgrade is usually recommended primarily to take benefit of the latest features (which is valid for this upgrade as well), I found several other compelling reasons purely from deployment perspective. Standardize your EM deployment:  Enterprise Manager comprises of several different components (OMS, agents, plug-ins, etc) and it might be possible that these are at varied patch levels in your environment. For instance, in case of an environment containing Bundle Patch 1 (customer announcement), there is a good chance that you may not have all the components up-to-date. There are two possible reasons. Bundle Patch 1 involved patching different components (OMS, agents, plug-ins) with multiple one-off patches which may not have been applied to all components yet. Bundle Patch 1 for different platforms were not released together. Which means you may not have got the chance to patch all the components on different platforms. Note: BP1 patches are not mandatory to upgrade to EM12c R2 release EM 12c R2 provides an excellent opportunity to standardize your Cloud Control environment (OMS, repository and agents) and plug-ins to latest versions in single shot. All platform releases are made available simultaneously: For the very first time in the history of EM release, all the platforms were released on day one itself, which means you do not need to wait for platform specific binaries for EM OMS or Agent to perform install or upgrades in a heterogeneous environment. Highly refined and automated process – Upgrade process is by far the smoothest and the cleanest as compared to previous releases of Enterprise manager. Following are the ones that stand out. Automatic Plug-in management – Plug-in upgrade along with new plug-in deployment is supported in upgrade installer wizard which means bulk of the updates to OMS and repository can be done in the same workflow. Saves time and minimizes user inputs. Plug-in Upgrade or Migrate Auto Update: While doing the OMS and repository upgrade, you can use Auto Update screen in Oracle Universal Installer to check for any updates/patches. That will help you to avoid the know issues and will make sure that your upgrade is successful. Allows mass upgrade of EM Agents – A new dedicated menu has been added in the EM console for agent upgrade. Agent upgrade workflow is extremely simple that requires agent name as the only input. ADM / JVMD Manager/Agent upgrade – complete process is supported via UI screens. EM12c R2 Upgrade Guide is much simpler to follow as compared to those for earlier releases. This is attributed to the simpler upgrade process. Robust and Performing Platform: EM12c R2 release not only includes several new features, but also provides a more stable platform which incorporates several fixes and enhancements in the Enterprise Manager framework. II - Few Tips To Remember In my last post (blog link) I shared few tips and tricks from my experience applying the Bundle Patch. Recently I upgraded the same site to EM 12c R2 and found few points that you must take note of, while planning this upgrade. The tips below are also applicable to EM 12c R1 environments that do not have Bundle Patch 1 patches applied. Verify the monitored application certification – Specific targets like E-Business Suite have not yet been certified as managed target in EM 12c R2. Therefore make sure to recheck the Enterprise Manager certification Matrix on My Oracle Support before planning the upgrade. Plan downtime – Because EM 12c R2 is an incremental release of EM 12c, for EM 12c R1 to EM 12c R2 upgrade supports only 1-system upgrade approach, which mean there will be downtime. OMS name change after upgrade – In case of multi OMS environments, additional OMS is renamed after upgrade, which has few implications when you upgrade JVMD and ADP agents on OMS. This is well documented in upgrade guide but make sure you read through all the notes. Upgrading BI Publisher– EM12c R2 is certified with BI Publisher 11.1.1.6.0 only. Therefore in case you are using EM 12c R1 which is integrated with BI Publisher 11.1.1.5.0, you must upgrade the BI Publisher to 11.1.1.6.0. Follow the steps from Advanced Installation and Configuration Guide here. Perform Post upgrade Tasks – Make sure to perform post upgrade steps mentioned in documentation here. These include critical changes that must be done right after upgrade to get the right configuration. For instance Database plug-in should be upgraded to Revision 3 (12.1.0.2.0 [u120804]). Delete old OMS Home – EM12c R1 to EM12c R2 is an out of place upgrade, which means it creates a new oracle home for OMS, plug-ins, etc. Therefore please ensure that You have sufficient extra space for new OMS before starting the upgrade process. You clean up the old OMS home after the upgrade process. Steps are available here. DO NOT remove the agent home on OMS host, because agent is upgraded in-place. If you have standby OMS setup then do look into the steps to upgrade the standby OMS from the upgrade guide before going ahead. Read the right documentation – Make sure to follow the Upgrade guide which provides the most comprehensive information on EM12c R2 upgrade process. Additionally you can refer other resources to get familiar with upgrade concepts.   I'm thinking about making a mediawiki website. At first I'd like to try it at localhost. I'm running Kubuntu 11.10, so I did: sudo aptitude install apache2 mysql-server php5 php5-mysql php5-cli And I also fetched the latest mediawiki to: /home/boris/Its/sites/mediawiki-1.17.0 Now I'm supposed to open http://localhost/home/boris/Its/sites/mediawiki-1.17.0/index.php But firefox says the page is not found. While http://localhost works. If I get it right - I have to open index.php to install mediawiki. So my question is - what do I do wrong? I'm really sorry for this is might be a very simple question. By the way do I have to make a db beforehand? Is it possible to use mongoDB as a db with mediawiki?

• How does ecryptfs impact harddisk performance?

  I have my home directy encrypted with ecryptfs. Does ecryptfs lead to fragmentation? I have the feeling that reading files, displaying folders and login became continuously slower and slower (although it was not noticeably slow at the beginning). The hard disk makes a lot of seek noise even if I open only a text file. In /home/.ecryptfs I see many big archives (that probably contain the encrypted files), so I'm wondering if Linux file system online defragmentation gains anything here. What options do I have to increase performance? Should I decide whether I maybe better do without encryption?

• Quickly, syntax error: media_grid.show()

  i run the app and get this error. the little arrow points to the 'd', dont know what that means. plus i had the same error just before but on this line: from quickly.widgets.dictionary grid import DictionaryGrid the arrow pointed to the 'd' in grid as well. then i changed it to this: from quickly.widgets.dictionary_grid import DictionaryGrid i added a '_' in the middle. and now i have the syntax error in the question. • Tomcat still running after uninstalling

  I installed tomcat7 using the following command: sudo apt-get install tomcat7 Then to uninstall it, I used below command: sudo dpkg -l|grep tomcat This listed all the packages related to tomcat. Then I removed tomcat7: sudo dpkg -P tomcat7 After that, I saw that, some related package were still there, and surprisingly I was still able to access the tomcat home page at - http://localhost:8080. So, I tried to remove it using the following command: sudo apt-get remove tomcat7 sudo apt-get autoremove But, still I was able to access the tomcat home page. So I re-booted my PC, thinking that the effect will take effect after that. But again, I'm still able to access the homepage. That means that tomcat is still running on my PC. What's going on here? Have I followed the steps correctly to uninstall tomcat. I want to uninstall to re-install a private instance of tomcat. I found out that the directory - /usr/share/tomcat7, is still there: /usr/share/tomcat7$ ls conf log webapps Is it something to do with the uninstallation?

  I have just installed Xubuntu 12.04.2. • Hosting a website on Heroku.... I know how to, but im running into problems!

  I'm starting to learn more on the back-end scale of programing. Recently I started up Heroku for the second or third time. This time I actually installed the Git update to my Mac and installed Heroku in the terminal. I wanted to upload a static html site with the Sinatra gem. Everything worked out fine inside the terminal, though I added Sinatra after I got everything working and the file with the site hooked up to Heroku. In my logs I did see that I was missing the Sinatra gem, so I installed it. My site contains both the proper app.rb and config.ru files. I have nothing showing up online. Just a blank screen! Contacting Heroku on this problem has been very difficult. Si pincho en la carpeta de /opt, no hay carpeta personal, ¿y como uso ese espacio del disco? Gracias.

• Prevent Changing the Screen Saver and Wallpaper in Windows 7

  Sometimes you might not want users to have the ability to change Screen Savers and Wallpaper on Windows 7 workstations. Today we look at how to prevent them from changing either one or both. You might administer computers in your home or small office and find it annoying when users continuously change the wallpaper and Screen Savers to something obnoxious. A lot of times they might be inexperienced users and download these so-called “wonderful and free” Screen Saver/Wallpaper packages from shady sites that include loads of Spyware. Preventing users from changing them is another helpful tool to avoid wasteful time spent switching things back. Prevent Changing Screensavers & Wallpaper Using Group Policy Editor  Note: This method uses Group Policy which is not available in Home versions on Windows 7. Open the Start Menu and enter gpedit.msc into the Search box and hit Enter. When Local Group Policy Editor opens, navigate to User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Control Panel \ Personalization. Then in the right column double-click on Prevent changing desktop background. Now check the radio button next to Enabled, then click OK. Back on the Group Policy Screen, double-click on Prevent changing screen saver. In the next screen select the radio button next to Enable, click OK, then close out of Group Policy Editor. Now when a user goes into the Personalization section, the Desktop Background hyperlink is now grayed out and inactive. Notice the message One or more of the settings on this page has been disabled by the system administrator at the bottom of the section. If they click to change the Screen Saver, an error message will pop up letting them know the function is disabled. Prevent Changing Screensavers & Wallpaper Using a Registry Hack You can also make a couple Registry changes to prevent users from changing the Wallpaper & Screen Saver…which will work on Home versions of Windows 7. Before making any Registry changes make sure you back it up first. Open the Registry by typing regedit into the Search box in the Start menu and hit Enter. First we’ll start with the Wallpaper. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System and create a new String Value and name it Wallpaper. Then modify the Value data to point to the location of the Wallpaper you want it to always be. Where in this example it’s our main wallpaper on our local drive…then click OK. Now let’s make sure they can’t change the Screen Saver. In the same Registry location, we need to make a new DWORD (32-bit) Value. Give it the Value name of NoDispScrSavPage and the value data of “1” and click OK. Close out of the Registry and restart the machine or simply log off then back on again for the changes to take effect. Results For the Wallpapers, a user can still go in and see the selections, however if they try to change it to something else… It will just go back to the Personalization screen and no changes will be made, as we set the value to only be the background we specified. If the user tries to make a change to the Screen Saver, the hyperlink will be grayed out and inactive, and the message One or more of the settings on this page has been disabled by the system administrator will be displayed at the bottom of the section. Conclusion If you’re tired of users changing the Wallpaper and Screen Saver, and want another way to help avoid Malware, locking down these settings can help a lot. Again, before making any changes to the Registry, make sure to back it up. These settings should work in Vista and XP as well. • Add Global Hotkeys to Windows Media Player

  Do you use Windows Media Player in the background while working in other applications? The WMP Keys plug-in for Media Player adds global keyboard shortcuts that allow you to control Media Player even when it isn’t in focus. Windows Media Player has a slew of keyboard shortcuts that work only when the media player is active, but these shortcuts stop working once WMP is no longer in focus or minimized. WMP Keys add the following default global hotkeys for Windows Media Player 10, 11, and 12. Ctrl+Alt+Home – Play / Pause Ctrl+Alt+Right – Next track Ctrl+Alt+Left – Previous track Ctrl+Alt+Up Arrow Key – Volume Up Ctrl+Alt+Down Arrow Key – Volume Down Ctrl+Alt+F – Fast Forward Ctrl+Alt+B – Fast Backward Ctrl+Alt+[1-5] – Rate 1-5 stars Note: Tapping Ctrl+Alt+F and Ctrl+Alt+B will skip ahead or back in 5 second intervals. Close out of Windows Media Player and then download and install WMP Keys (link below). After you’ve installed WMP Keys, you’ll need to enable it. Select Organize and then Options… In the Options window, select the Plug-ins tab, click Background in the Category window, then check the box for Wmpkeys Plugin. Click OK to save and exit. You can also enable the plug-in by selecting Tools > Plug-ins and clicking Wmpkeys Plugin. You to view and edit the global hotkeys in the WMPKeys settings window. Select Tools > Plug-in properties and click Wmpkeys Plugin. Below you can see all the default WMP Keys shortcuts.   To change any of the shortcuts, select the text box then press the new keyboard shortcut. Click OK when finished. • Juju Zookeeper & Provisioning Agent Not Deployed

  I am using juju with the openstack provider, i expected that when i bootstrap that zookeeper and provisioning agent would get deployed on the bootstrap vm in openstack. This dose not seem to be the case. the bootstrap vm gets deployed but it seems that nothing gets deployed to the VM. • Falcoda Sub Domains [on hold]

  I run a website on Falcoda, using home package, but the option to edit sub domains has gone. Please help! I have already setup some using the hosting console previously, but it was updated and now the link is gone. I found that you can use web.hostingconsole.info/sub-domains.cgi , but it says I can have 0 sub domains and I currently have -5 left. On the home package it says you have unlimited. Is this a problem with mine only, or is this up with everybodys?

• Strategy for using snapshots to back up Ubuntu Linux server?

  I need some backup advice for my home file server. Here are the mount points, volume groups, logical volumes and used/total space of all the volumes on my Ubuntu 8.10 home file server. / vgA/lvRoot [7.5G/50G] /tmp vgB/lvTmp [195M/30G] /var vgB/lvVar [780M/30G] swap vgB/lvSwap [16.00 GB] /media1 vgC/lvMedia1 [400G/975G] /media2 vgC/lvMedia2 [75G/295G] /boot partition (no volume group) [95M/200M] /video partition (no volume group) [450G/950G] /backups vgD/lvBackupTarget [800G/925G] /home vgE/lvHome [85G/200G] I have just added a 2.0 TB external USB drive that I would like to use to backup everything. (It will be a close fit to get it all on one 2.0 TB drive. I actually have a 2nd external USB drive if needed.) I'd like to backup "/", var, /media1, media2 and /home. I'll deal with /boot and /video separately since they are not logical volumes. For all the logical volumes I'm anticipating taking snapshots and then copying those snapshots to the 2.0 TB external USB drive. I have never done a task like that before. If I do that, I could use the tutorial I found here: http://www.howtoforge.com/linux_lvm_snapshots My questions are: What is the best overall strategy? Is it LVM snapshots, as I'm assuming? How should I prepare, subdivide and mount the 2.0 TB external USB drive? 2.a. Should I create one or more regular partitions or should I create a physical volume with one or more logical volumes? 2.b. Would it be advisable to extactly mirror the source pv/lv layout on the external drive, and if so, is this a good strategy? What's the best way to get the snapshots onto the external drive? dd? Even though this is a strategy question, feedback with actual commands is appreciated. I need step-by-step cookbook-style help because I don't do much server admin work. (Background: This is a home file server that I have rarely had to touch in about 2 years. It has done its job without much intervention. The really old PC that I used to back everything up recently failed, so I'm replacing that with the external USB drive(s) and I'd like to upgrade my backup strategy at the same time. Previously, I just copied stuff from /backups over to the other computer and that would not have made things very easy in a real restore situation. The /backups mount point contains backup copies of "most" of the important data on a file by file basis, but it does not contain copies of /boot, etc. BTW, the actual internal HDD that holds /backups is separate from the other storage devices.) EDIT: I'll propose a strategy... The idea came from a comment here: LVM mirroring VS RAID1 "LVM mirrors are for replication of a logical volume to a different physical volume. It's essentially meant to "move the data to a different disk". The mirror is then broken..." That would fit my requirements well. Here is an ideal situation: establish the LV mirror on the external drive break the link with the mirror create a (persistent) snapshot on the mirror after a week, resync the mirror with the original source and update the mirror break the link and create another snapshot on the mirror. Obviously, the mirror will be like a weekly full backup. And the snapshots on the mirror will represent earlier points in time. If this would work and if it would be time efficient, it would give a nice full & differential type backup on the external drive based on LVM. I have not heard of a strategy like this before. Will it work? Could it be scripted? Thoughts? EDIT 2: Creating Portable DiskSafes With LoopbackFS And LVM Snapshots This article seems intriguing: http://www.howtoforge.com/creating-portable-disksafes-with-loopbackfs-and-lvm-snapshots Unfortunately, I don't understand exactly how to map those ideas to the strategy I'm proposing above. I'm going to ask this last bit as a separate question. I will leave my original question in place because I still desire feedback on the overall best strategy. At this moment I'm assuming it is LVM mirroring in the style of "Creating Portable DiskSafes with LVM Snapshots" but that might be wrong.

  I tried to install NetBeans 7.2 from a downloaded .sh file, but experienced problems.
